Was in a rush to get home from campus and stumbled upon this place which was on the way, so I decided to make a quick stop to order something. Sammy G's has a sort of rustic atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor seating and a bar inside. Unfortuantely I came at a bad time, as they were having technical issues that prevented me from using my card and I had to switch my order from the Banh Mi Pizza to just Cheesy Garlic Bread because I only had eleven dollars on me. The bread took a while, but the cashier was very apologetic about the situation and the bread was given to me warm so I won't complain. When I got home to eat the cheesy garlic bread, I was caught off guard by how good it was. Maybe it's just been a while since I've had garlic bread as a whole, but it was just as amazing and fulfilling as I imagined it to be. The sausage comes in little pellets that look like dry dog food, which doesn't look too appetizing; fortunately they don't taste like it, but they don't taste much of anything else either, and they mostly fall off the pizza. read more

We got the club pesto pizza and two orders of fries. The club pesto had bacon, onions, chicken, and was very garlic forward. I liked their amount of garlic as it added pizzaz. Their pizzas are good and I like their unique takes on pizza such as the Banh Mi love one which sounds intriguing. Their fries have no right to be this good for a pizza place. Soft and pillowy almost mashed potato inside with a crispy exterior. Not dry or oily at all. Get the fries. Before the San Jose State University's Men's Basketball game, I hit up a friend to ask, "Hey, wanna get Sammy G's?" With a determined grin, we walked to this fine establishment that has served at SJSU's events in the past! We arrived around the fall's pitch dark of 6 PM. If you're a local, you're well aware Downtown can be rough, so make sure to bring a friend! The service is as simple as getting to the cash register, ordering your food, then retrieving your number. Quite frankly, the most difficult part was choosing which delectable dish to order! There are many mouthwatering options, such as the renowned Buffalo Mac and the unique Banh Mi pizza. My buddy can't digest gluten, I wanted meat, so we stuck with the 10 inch Robert Classic with gluten-free crust. Cost: For a college student, definitely affordable! The 10 inch pizza itself was $14, which is inexpensive given it suffices two meals or can be shared! Taste: This was my first time trying gluten-free crust, and I thought it was on par with other pizza place's crusts! Now that's saying something! My buddy enjoyed her pizza, gobbling it up with excitement she can enjoy the delicacies of pizza without severe gluten allergic reactions. I snuck a glance at the kitchen, where I watched the sauce carefully poured over along with fresh ingredients that'd tasted its quality. I was picking the sausage pieces off the cardboard box, even though I was full! You can never go wrong with bell peppers, red onions, sausage, pepperoni, olives, and mushrooms. These flavors meshed together well, creating a delightful dinner in my stomach! I've got to visit Sammy G's more. Oh dear lord is Sammy g's damn good. You can taste the freshness of their ingredients on their pizza in every bite. They make their sauces fresh and on the spot. I've personally seen it! Their tots and wings are delicious. Definitely meant to be shared and because they made the wing sauce on the spot, the taste can vary batch to batch. Their understaffed and popular right now which is an unfortunate COVID circumstance. So please be patient with them. I ordered a pizza an hour in advance once and when I came to pick it up, the line was out the door and they only had two people working. They were doing their best to keep up with demand while still serving their best Zza. The pizza itself is a good balance between thick and thin crust. It is crispy but still not thin. It has more cheese to sauce ratio and drips with toppings when you order them. Their drink menu is massive for the size of their shop. AND THEY HAVE HAPPY HOUR EVERY DAY! Most places do not do that. As always, because it is in downtown, parking is a headache. They have 2-4 spots dedicated to their shop but because it's such a small amount, do not count on them being available. I tend to order for carry out and walk over to pick up. They have a really nice patio area for anyone who is a dog owner. Or anyone who doesn't want to inside. Came to Sammy G's as usual until I saw the menu had changed. They took out all lunch specials and SJSU student discount. I now I had to pay $22 on a mid personal size pizza when I used to get a drink and pay $15. At least I can get better food at Chipotle for the same price. An SJSU staple! Sammy G's offers awesome food and services. In addition, they have amazing specialty pizzas that I have not seen anywhere before. Sammy G also offers happy daily from 3-6 PM. For drinks, they have a variety of beer selections, frozen margaritas, and mimosas. Before COVID, they had different daily specials and drink discounts; however, they do not offer that right now. I know times are rough right now, and this place is working hard to keep their service good and their food consistently tasty. But I'm giving 5 stars mostly because of the service I ordered on grubhub but when i arrived they never received my order, i showed them my order number and called grub hub and idk what was going on but they messed up and they were not receiving it, however the employees were super nice about it and made me the pizza without charging me again, super super nice of them esp since it was late and i had a long day, easily fixed the inconvenience. The delivery service is terrible! The first time that I ordered from them, the food was just left on the porch. No one knocked. The second time, they forgot my sodas and they wanted me to go pick them up! That's why I got delivery! Not so I could go pick up my own stuff! As a post-pandemic, 2023 restaurant, Sammy Gs meets the criteria of a good restaurant - cleanliness is there, good food, and good service. But what made it great, what made it 5 stars, is gone for me. Sammy Gs was everything when I was a student at SJSU -- from 2015 to 2018. In my undergrad, and my grad, they were the spot to go for good beer, good pizza, and good vibes. We used to go there in every capacity; as a restaurant, as an eatery, as a bar, and above all, as a hangout. Now, they are just an eatery with pizza, beer, and fries. Ownership changed in 2019(?) and of course, the pandemic happened, but it's certainly not what it used to be after the changes. Not sure what happened since then but they lost their college audience, their ambience, and all the good core staples. (I used to come back for the fries and the vibes every single week.) It's not cost-effective, it's not inviting, and the food is just all okay - nothing bad, nothing great. My biggest disappointment was the beer: $38 for a pitcher that only gives 4 glasses on tap. This pizza is topped with MAC AND CHEESE! Something I don't see very often. The chicken was tossed in buffalo sauce. It was something different, but I'm not sure I'd order this again, as I thought it was pretty bland. Perhaps if they drizzled buffalo sauce or sriracha on top of the pizza, that would do it. Mother clucker was the typical bbq pizza that is served at practically almost every pizza joint. But they def did it right here! Can't go wrong :) In terms of the pizza itself, 2 10" were perfect for our party of 3, but if we were any more hungry, it wouldn't have been enough. I ordered from doordash from this place. I got the Buffalo Mac pizza & Spicy Buffalo wings. I loved the pizza because it was not greasy and the flavor was really delicious. The thickness of the crust was also great. Now the wings, I was not a fan of. It was not spicy enough and more sauce on it because it was basically dried up. They only put in one carrot stick and three celery sticks which I don't think is enough. I'd give it another try though but order something else instead of the wings. Food: 8/10 read more
