Update: they finally raised their prices due to the economy. I have no issues with that since the food is still reasonably priced. The coffee, on the other hand, is now $4.00. 2nd highest in Salem (Friendly Toast owns that honor). Considering most other breakfast plaes are only $3.29 or less I think that's pretty high. The food is still good, still worth the money. The service is usually very good but there are times when the waitresses tends to get busy and forget we are there. I'm a regular there and I see no reason to change that. Good food and decent prices....except that coffee. read more

LOVED this place! Went around 11 a.m. Sunday for family breakfast and didn't have to wait. Amazing variety of items on the menu and very reasonable prices (see pictures of menus). Way more reasonable than the "chain" place down the street. This is truly a local breakfast spot. Even though we were "out of towners" we got very friendly service and many coffee refills. All the food was very good and sadly a couple of us couldn't finish all our plates...very generous helpings! Two of us got the "big boy breakfast", and yes it really does come with bacon and sausage and ham...not just "a choice of"! Sammy J's offers the best breakfast in southern New Hampshire. Given the many choices, this is a very very high assessment but I stand by it. The ingredients are obviously very very fresh and they are cooked to perfection. The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and professional and all seem to have a great sense of humor. Whoever designed the menu was a genius. The selections are wide ranging, typical and unique at the same time. The presentation is diner plus. There are always specials. It's open and spacious with plenty of parking. When you leave you are charged for the day, not dragged down with heavy greasy fare. The lunch business is very brisk so it must be good. Haven't been in forever. Was up this way waiting for my car to be repaired so we stopped in. PRO- Always plenty of seating, on week days. Pleasant staff. And the food was awesome! GREAT home fries (I judge a place by it's homefries) came with my egg sandwhich with deli ham on it. Was really good. Ward got the "Big Boy" or something & it came with a ton of food! So wow we returned to Sammie's a few times recently and things have certainly changed for the better. There are so many staff on hand to help and at least 5 cooks! I'd give a higher rating if we didn't spend so much time waiting to be seated and get our food. When my dad and I arrived, we were standing in the door awkwardly waiting to be seated. Two or three of the employees looked our way but didn't acknowledge us at all. When another employee finally approached us, we were told the wait would be about 20 minutes and we'd receive a phone call when the table was ready. Seemed reasonable since they were busy. We waited over 30 minutes in the car with no phone call before we ended up going inside and waiting to be seated. That in itself wouldn't have been so bad if 1. Our food didn't take about 30 minutes to get to our table and 2. The food quality was worth the wait (it wasn't). Coffee was typical watery diner coffee. I ordered three slices of cinnamon raisin French toast which was just fried sliced cinnamon raisin bread. I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs which were better than the French toast. Service was better once we were seated. They're good about refilling coffee since I was asked three times if I wanted a refill. If want a cheap breakfast and have time to spare, then this place is a decent option. Probably won't be back here any time soon since there are better breakfast options in the Salem area. read more

Sammy J's is a diner style restaurant where the food is cheap and served in big portions. That being said, the food is bland and full of preservatives. I ordered the Veggie Omelette with jalapeños and a side of salsa. The veggie omelette arrived in a large portion with two pieces of toast cut and buttered as well as hash-browns. Everything needed salt but tasted decent. I could tell the jalapeños came from a can and weren't not fresh based on the color. The salsa was also canned and not fresh. The hash browns had no garlic or salt and tasted like heated potatoes- I don't even know how to describe them other than bland. On the other hand, I tried my brother in law's apple pancake and it was very good! Maybe sweet dishes are prepared better here? The service here is great. Staff is very friendly and the service is fast. I wish the food here matched the service. read more

If not for the friendly waitress would be a 0 star! We were waiting for 40 minutes for a simple omelet and BLT. Nothing complicated. We had an appointment to make and let them know. We asked for it to be canceled because we didn't have anymore time to wait but they refused to cancel our order. We finally got it to go leaving only 10 minutes remaining to rush to appointment making us late. We paid full price for the order with tip( because not waitress fault) and had to leave the food in the car to be cold and not edible. The Lady answered the phone immediately said hold on put the Phone down. So for 6 Minutes I could hear her taking orders cashing people out. Doing other tasks. Maybe she forgot I was there? As mentioned, the pancakes were disappointing - they looked good and they are large (10") but after a few bites, we could not overlook their dryness. Could just be the recipe was tweaked this morning because of Memorial Day crowds. We would give Sammy J's another shot, because although our visit was a bit of a mixed bag, the positives outweighed the so-so's enough for us to think the so-so's were a fluke. A laughable excuse for a restaurant. Period. You'll be able to tell when you walk inside and see the same two old folks with toast and coffee every day and barely anyone else. It's a ghost town inside and it's due to the owners having long ago given up on it. All members of the same awful family. My father loves it here so I've been here a great deal while not eating anything, but even he got sick of it recently, Thank God. In the time it's been there, I've seen broken toilets, bathroom doors without locks, the dishwasher cooking food, the owner steal money out of the waitresses tip jar, a dog kept in the kitchen in a baby stroller, numerous health code violations, an ATM that say broken for two years, waitresses vacuuming next to customers as they eat, the owner telling customers how she has to save money by getting the cheapest ingredients she can afford. My favorite would have to be when the customer who was battling flies buzzing around her table had one land on her pancakes and the waitress told her she should "eat them faster and not leave them sitting on the table". Oh yes, the flies. Everywhere. Can't forget that. The brother who owns the ice cream place, known in the area for screaming at kids outside his shop, recently took it over and is delusional as he thinks the name has longstanding recognition in the community since it's been around so long. He's half right as the name is known, but as a place to avoid. Absolute shit through and through. Avoid at all costs. read more

Local breakfast sot the type you go to every Saturday or Sunday or you could make this a weekly routine. It has an extensive breakfast menu and the staff are quick, helpful and friendly. In fact if you just rated the service they would still get 5 stars from me. The food is homemade just like I'd cook in my own kitchen. I had scrambled eggs bacon and for the first time in 25 years I had a pancake.( cranberry walnut) the bacon was perfectly crisp and the eggs more done without being rubbery. Sammy J's served up breakfast truly fitting a greasy spoon diner. The atmosphere isn't going to knock your socks off (it's reminiscent of portable classrooms from high school) but the food is darned tasty. Bacon is thick slab and cooked crisp, patty sausage is lightly crisp on the outside but soft and tender inside. The french toast appears unassuming but has a nice flavor and texture which really shocked me. The biscuits and gravy were good but: 1. needed more gravy 2. was served with actual sausage patties ON the biscuits that's not how we do it down south but overall, the flavor was pretty close. I'll still maintain when you're ordering a dish like sausage gravy and biscuits, you're looking for something that's going to stick to your ribs and there just wasn't enough actual gravy to even soak into the biscuits. The biscuits, btw, were sort of non-descript. The wait staff, while busy, did their best to keep coffee (which was a little on the weak side but still had a nice, not bitter flavor) filled and checked back just enough to make sure you didn't need anything but not enough to overhear your life story. I think the hub and I found another fave breakfast place in the area! We ended up seated at the bar counter (we love it at the counters!). There were spots available at tables, but we asked for the bar. I got the french toast and bacon, and hub got the irish benny... Nothing was left behind on our plates. The homefries my hub got were delish! Not the dried frozen cooked ones, but the freshly cut and grilled fries! Yum! My french toast were delish! Simple looking french toast, but something in those make it special :) Hub had to keep taking a bite from my plate, but that was ok with me picking on the hash and fries! Second time here. First time was in the morning when they were super busy. Service and food were great. Parking was a little tough. They only have about 6 spots in front, but there is a second much larger lot right behind the store with an entrance so you can get in without walking all the way around; but even this was full. Luckily only had to wait a minute for someone to finish eating and free up a spot. Second time was yesterday around lunch time and it was surprisingly quiet. Still great food and service. The only thing even close to wrong was that the kitchen forgot my side order of eggs. The waitress did notice this on her own without me saying anything. We had Chocolate Chip and Banana Pancakes. I've been going here for years so it's time to write an review for it! Ambience: How should I describe it? Imagine the movie Grease. The floor is a black-and-white checkered pattern design, the seats are red, the stools on the counter are round, red and metal-ish. It has a very 1960's old school feel to it. Food: Great selection of breakfast assortment. I usually get the two-egg (sunny-side up to dip my bread in), bacon strips, sausage links, baked beans with a side of toast. Grease-spoon style at its best. The coffee here is AMAZING - probably the best non-Starbucks coffee I've had. Service: The waitresses are nice and refills your coffee/water with good rotations. They love to use the word "hun" for everything so get used to it. "What would you like hun?", "Need a refill on the coffee hun?", "All set hun?", "Here's the bill hun!", etc. Price: One meal with a coffee or OJ is under $10. Overall, it's my favorite place to go for breakfast. My only recommendations are to open past noon on weekends and to accept credit cards... maybe it's just me struggling to get up and make it there on time (Maddie's nearby is opened until 2 pm) or the crazy guy who never uses cash unless he needs to (I feel like I'm losing out on potential cash back/points).
