Sammy's is our Go To place for Mexican food. Not much to look at, but I have found these hole in the wall places are the best! Sammy makes his own salsa daily. Green salsa, Red salsa and Pico de Gallo. Freshly made chips can start every meal. The have an extensive menu that we are trying to have one of each thing (except Menudo, I don't get drunk enough Saturday night, anymore). So far, what we have had is exceptional. Price: $$. Been hitting up Sammy's since 2009. Best all meat carne asada burrito (#21 on the menu) ever! Honestly, everything on the menu is awesome. Damn! That menudo was bomb! There were generous portions of tripe and a lot of hominy. I was so satisfied and full that I skipped out on breakfast the next day. Perfect flavor and the menudo came with garnishing; onion, oregano, dried chilis. Also came with warm tortillas. Great menudo! read more

Food was ok. I ordered jamaica because the person took my order reassured me that it was freshly made from flowers. She lied. It was made from powder deluding in water, not the authentic jamaica flower drink. Delicious family owned restaurant. What a treat to watch the owners interact with regular customers and first times like us. I was looking for a spot with chilaquiles and this spot came up on my Yelp. So my family and I came to check it out. Once we got there we were greeted by the hostess and the also they came to ask if I wanted my chilaquiles spicy and I said yes of course and once I got my chilaquiles I said that looks so delicious and the women said wait til u try it it's more delicious than it looks and yes I agree It was so tasty and spicy but so delicious My partner and mom got Menudo and they said it was sooo goood and the people kept asking if everything was okay. I was nervous going here, because often times, hole in a wall kind of place tend to have staff that does not speak English. Sammy's restaurant DOES! I was very glad. Food was delicious, although the sauce on enchilada tasted more like the packaged sauce I get from McCormick mix. The chips and salsa bar was awesome. The dining area is uber tiny for my preference, but I can let that go. The taco that I got was little too messy-assembled, so it was hard to eat. I took 1 star off for the little too much "home like" presentation of the food. I will go back tho, because compare to some places, price is very affordable. :) read more

So here's the scoop on this place ... they have a very loyal following which has been reviewing them very generously on Yelp. We decided to visit based on the Yelp reviews, but discovered the story is a little better than the food. They've been open for 22 years, "Sammy" is the owner who works there seven days a week, but also the son; Sammy Jr. was there when we arrived and we found him absolutely charming, as he shared their history, told us the Uncle was in the kitchen, or sometimes their 20-year employee, so the whole thing is definitely "family" in approach. And it is one of those places that serves menudo, which recommends it for many (other soups on the menu, too). The place is one of those charming little old dives that are still around, and you'll need to sit at one of the two tables if you aren't slim enough for the bolted-down tables/booths. You'll need to help yourself to chips and salsa (choice of spicy, or very spicy!!!), as well as the plastic cutlery. When I asked Mr. Picky whether he knew that he had served from the normal salsa, he said, "Oh yeah, the other one had heat waves coming off it." And they confirmed it's pretty hot-spicy. Anyway, when I complained about the flimsy-soft plastic cutlery, Sammy Jr. ran out with regular cutlery and I really appreciated it. He also asked a couple times how the food was. The problem was that he was so friendly and sweet that we didn't have the heart to tell him our true opinion. While the cheese enchilada was pretty decent, we both agreed we could pass on the chili relleno and shrimp enchiladas. Bottom line, not necessarily a place I'd recommend, but definitely a bit of old tradition. read more

There is horrible food and horrible treatment at this place. Avoid unless you enjoy risking food poisoning. I was going to let this place pass as simply horrible food until they insulted me right to my face. I had just come back from a long trip from Los Angeles with my kids and had a taste for some tamales. I had read that this place had decent food. The reviews must be all from relatives. ANY person selling tamales in front of Walmart is vastly superior to this place. I have never in my life had a tamale so bad. It must have been premade or purchased and then frozen for days. I ordered the chicken tamale plate. The masa was dried to be almost crusty. The chicken was not edible. It was so hard you could weave it into a rope. Both tamales were the same. I told them upon getting home how bad they were. I said I could drive right back with the food, and they could see for themselves. They didn't even try to cut into it as they know they are selling garbage. They (Cynthia) offered an exchange, and I said I would try the cheese enchilada. You can't go wrong with that. It was horrible. Like some nasty super salty cheese soup. A few bites (slurps) of this and I started to get a bloated stomach. The rice was also very dry, and the beans had no texture. Everything was incredibly bland on top of that. While making the exchange they said the tamale was good and blamed me because I did not order the ranchero sauce to go on top. Nothing in this world would have added moisture to that dried out, old chicken. I did not appreciate being told I cannot tell when food is rotten. It is overpriced for what you get. Go to any outside vendor or Vallarta and you will get superior food for a better price and not worry about getting ill. read more

My co-workers and I love this place. We have a little tradition of getting something together and sit down together at least every other week. Sammys is a "HECK YEAH!" every time we try to decide. The Al Pastor burrito is a favorite. If we do breakfast the machaca burrito (which in my opinion is the best in 120 miles.) I visited this restaurant for lunch with a friend a few weeks ago. It is small little ma and pa store off of Sierra Highway. We had driven past it a few times and thought why not try it. The menu is really long so there is a lot of variety to choose from. With that said, my friend and I ordered the exact same thing- Carna Asada plate. You have an option between corn or flour tortillas to go with it. The food was ready not too long after we ordered. Serving sizes were great, food was fresh, and tortillas were warm. They also have chips and salsa for you while you're waiting for your food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very casual. Its a small store and a little cramped but it wasn't crowded when we went so it was fine. It's a bit older in appearance. There is a TV inside that was playing Spanish TV. Service was friendly and nice. This is a good place for authentic Mexican and I definitely want to come back for more. read more

FOOD: I've been here a couple times. I'll start by saying that they have a salsa bar and chips bin out, and the salsa is actually quite tasty! It's thick, not watery, has good flavor, and is quite good for being unlimited. A friend and I have had a chorizo breakfast burrito, chorizo and eggs, and an al pastor burrito. The chorizo and eggs were fluffy and flavorful; I would get them again. The breakfast burrito was definitely the best of them all, and the item I would recommend most here. Meat, soft potatoes, melted cheese, and salsa in every bite made it very tasty and enjoyable. The al pastor burrito, however, was disappointing. The meat did not taste much like pastor, and a cumin/nutmeg-y taste was often the predominant flavor in every bite. I also ordered extra meat, but it didn't seem like there was much pastor meat in the burrito. CUSTOMER SERVICE: They're nice, polite people. My only complaint is that they seem to be a little un-accommodating when it comes to ordering things not strictly on the menu. I wanted to order a side of chorizo to eat, but no matter how I tried asking or phrasing it, they insisted the only way to get chorizo was by ordering an entire dish. That was disappointing.
