FOOD: I've been here a couple times. I'll start by saying that they have a salsa bar and chips bin out, and the salsa is actually quite tasty! It's thick, not watery, has good flavor, and is quite good for being unlimited. A friend and I have had a chorizo breakfast burrito, chorizo and eggs, and an al pastor burrito. The chorizo and eggs were fluffy and flavorful; I would get them again. The breakfast burrito was definitely the best of them all, and the item I would recommend most here. Meat, soft potatoes, melted cheese, and salsa in every bite made it very tasty and enjoyable. The al pastor burrito, however, was disappointing. The meat did not taste much like pastor, and a cumin/nutmeg-y taste was often the predominant flavor in every bite. I also ordered extra meat, but it didn't seem like there was much pastor meat in the burrito. CUSTOMER SERVICE: They're nice, polite people. My only complaint is that they seem to be a little un-accommodating when it comes to ordering things not strictly on the menu. I wanted to order a side of chorizo to eat, but no matter how I tried asking or phrasing it, they insisted the only way to get chorizo was by ordering an entire dish. That was disappointing. The best mexican food in the AV and some dishes are the best I've ever had. Their Shrimp Cocktail is a star! Generous amount of fresh shrimp and lots of avocado. My favorite is their Wednesday Cheese Enchilada special. Their Chicken Habañero is a must try and their Shrimp Mojo de Ajo is delicious. Their salsas are spectacular and the salsa verde is unique and not to be missed. Sammy's Escabeche is house made and I wish they would jar it for purchase, it is that good. Today I had their Beef Taquito Ranchera platter. It was served with Rice and Beans, Sour Cream, Guacamole and house made Ranchera sauce. The beans are so tasty and everything was made fresh while you wait. Don't let the looks fool you, the food and ambiance are warm, welcoming and downright delicious. Sammy is there during the week and he always cheers me up. He is always happy to see me and my service dog and on the weekend his daughter takes over and hooks you up. She remembers you and she really cares, further she goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need for a great Mexican meal. I'm pretty new in town, coming from the SFV So, I really don't know any good places to eat Up here yet. But, I'm really glad because I do have one place so far that I'm really pleased with, and that's SAMMYS I'm pretty picky about one meal and that's MENUDO, I'm happy to say they hit a home run with me on that! Following the advice of other Yelpers., we stopped here for lunch on our drive through the area. We ordered the Carlos Burrito and Chili Verde Burrito. Both were very good. It is apparent that the owner takes pride in his restaurant both in his food and his service. We will be back next time we're along this route. read more

I tried Sammy's tonight for dinner. Service was good and my food was cooked up in a snap. I was very disappointed and by the chili relleno, which was an oily pan-fried egg wrapped around a skinny mild pepper. Definitely not what I'm accustomed to. Also, they don't put cheese inside their version of a chile relleno, only on top as a garnish. I'm not sure if this a regional variant of the dish, but it didn't like this chili relleno at all. The beef enchilada looked appealing, but inside there was very little meat. What meat I found was machaca, and there was an abundance of crunchy bell pepper and some large chunks of white onion. Again, it wasn't what I was expecting and not to my taste. The Al Pastor soft taco is pretty good, and the homemade salsa was really great!!! The beer was nice and cold. The "shredded beef hard taco" was hard to taco serious because it was filled with the same unacceptable mixture of bell pepper, white onion, and bits of machaca as the aforementioned beef enchilada. They are either very stingy with the cheese, or they were running low tonight. On the side, the taco came with shredded lettuce, sour cream, and a slice of tomato. I'm mustering up two stars for the kind and prompt service, clean premises, cold (expensive; $4.50 can of Modelo) beer, and good al pastor. read more

Oh man this place is spectacular and mind blowing! If you want quality authentic Mexican cuisine this is your place. There are so many rich layers of flavor from the salsas to the beans and rice. Then going to the only two taco spots in Mojave (El hefe and Anthonys grill) that doesn't serve buche or tripas I just new my taco days were done. First time trying this place tonight and WOWZER! It's nice to find a great Mexican food restaurant that actually tastes GREAT, and is not so authentic that it's bland. They don't serve ground beef which is fine. I ordered a chicken chimi without their special sauce, and it was AMAZING. I also ordered a bowl of menudo which was HUGE, definitely enough for two people. Everything taste great. Menudo had a generous amount of tripe which was nice!!! My only complaint is that it was $16 for all of this. So that's a little pricey. They throw in chips and salsa which is nice. Also please keep in mind my food was over an hour old when I finally got to it, busy day, and it was still AMAZING! Definitely going back!!! read more

My family has been going here for years! The food is amazing, the salsas are great, and the service is phenomenal. When my uncle comes in from out of town, he always makes time to stop at Sammy's. Ok so I usually come here for refried beans...I love them. The burritos are also very good, but last night I wanted something yummy but not as heavy..Im trying to lose some weight and eat a little better, summer is around the corner and I wanna get my sexy back. So I read the reviews and thought ok I have to try it. It was good and I will visit again but unfortunately I will not be visiting frequently. I had the sopes which where very good but the beans I think where a bit salty. Now I am very picky when it comes to rice and I always try the rice at least once but I won't be ordering anything with rice the next time I go. To me it tasted like flour.
