First off I think the food is overrated. The big issue is with the takeout service. On more than three occasions they have forgotten to include either sauces, fried noodles or both items. With our last order we stressed not to forget these items several times over the phone. When we went to pick up the food we asked if the items were in the bag and the answer was "Yes". When we wanted to check they stated "no need to check" that the items were in the bag. SURPRISE!!! When we arrived home and took everything out of the bag they once again forgot to include ANY sauces. We called and received the usual "We are sorry" then they asked if we could come back over and pick the items up. After explaining the past history of this happening they did offer to take 15% off our next order. The problem is that doesn't help with the order we already paid for and wanted to enjoy. I have informed them that we will no longer do business with them but instead go to the Lucky Dragon. I feel the portions, taste and customer service are far superior to Sampan Inn and the only reason we had continued to do business there was that my wife prefers one of their dishes. But after this last experience even she is fed up with Sampan Inn. read more

I love the sushi at Sampan. It's always good. Take out is ready on time, and the service is pleasant and prompt. My one complaint is that every time I have had a beer in the restaurant the beer has been skunked. If anyone at Sampan reads this, please note that you can't let cold beer get warm and then refrigerate it again. This ruins the beer. It won't make anyone sick, but it gives the beer an awful taste. read more

I have lived 5 minutes from this place forever and never tried it before tonight. I was floored at how good the vegetarian sushi maki rolls were -- the best I've ever had and that's saying something. They were huge too and the ingredients were unbelievably fresh. People are complaining about the service? So what? I'm so sick of people wanting their butts kissed just because they walked into a restaurant. Get over yourself. Just eat and shut up. If the food's bad that's one thing. It honestly pains me to write this review because their food is seriously delicious. However the service we were given last night was down right terriable. I don't remember the waiters name but he was the only male waiter I saw. For starters he ignored us for 15 mins (at the time it was not even busy he was just standing) we had to ask him for our initial drinks again after sitting for 15 mins. We never got tea which I noticed most other tables did. We asked for noodles he never brought them. I asked him a question about the menu and he was just down right rude and not very knowledgeable. He did not listen when we were ordering and ended up messing up one of the orders and corrected it by charging us extra. I had to ask three times for a refill on my drink and ended up asking one of the female waitresses who did get me my drink. However shortly after 3 people ran out of water and they never got a refill because he never came back. At the very end when we ordered our ice cream which we had to flag him down to do again he completely ignored what we ordered and just brought what he wanted. I really hope they correct their service at least with this guy or hire new help because Their food doesn't deserve the negative attention this waiter brings. read more

The five stars are an average of four stars for service and six for food! It took a bit too long to have our order taken after tea was set down. Once that was remedied we had two servers and were well taken care of. They bring tea without asking, as well as crispy noodles, pickled cabbage, and sweet dipping sauce. I started with a Mai Tai, umbrella and all, just what I was craving (umbrella and all). Apps were hot and sour soup (good) and Spicy tempura calamari - served with fried fresh jalapeno slices and scallions - awesome. Crispy and not overdone, accompanied with a sweet-spicy vinegar dipping sauce. Dinner was String beans in garlic sauce - BEST garlic sauce I have ever had! Smooth, spicy and rich. The highlight of the night was my companion's chicken lo mein. He asked for extra spicy and it was more like a drunken noodle in flavor than a lomein. He usually adds hot mustard and did not - I tried the noodles and they were fantastic - Asian comfort food at it's best. These folks know how to put out an authentic sauce! read more

When I crave chinese food I'm looking for your typical americanized greasy chinese. Sampan seems like it borders on "higher quality" food than what I usually go for (which I'm sure most people would appreciate). The general tsos, fried rice and low mein are all great. My main gripes are that the egg rolls which are a personal genre favorite of mine are just OK and they don't have the boneless spareribs drenched in sweet red sauce that I also like. read more

This restaurant is within walking distance from our house, so we would frequent it almost weekly. We would actually sit at the sushi bar and order sushi. On our last occurrence, and I kid you not!, we were sitting @ the sushi bar and a large cockroach came up through the crack on the corner of the table and kept walking. It was absolutely foul! That same evening my husband was crunching the roaches under his feet (as to not let our 2 daughters see them and completely freak out in the restaurant). And they have Japanese food, too - only in one half of the restaurant though, they're awkward about letting people order from both menus at once. Terrible! Absolutely terrible. I have no idea why this place was so crowded. I came on a Sunday at 5pm, we were seated promptly and handed 3 crusty old menus, two black and one green. No idea what the difference between them was, or what I was even looking at. The waiter didn't say two words to us the whole hour-plus that we were there. He didn't recommend anything, didn't fill our waters, and he might as well have left after he sat us. It looked like other tables were given crispy noodles, we were not. He basically came and took our orders, brought us the food and then did a Houdini. We spent over $50 on dinner and the food was below average at best. Totally bland. I've never met a hibachi dinner I didn't like until tonight. Won't be back and unfortunately there are very few Asian restaurant options around Havertown. If there were, this place would be history. I was skeptical of this place to begin with because it looks like a dump from the outside, the inside and experience was no better than the dump it looks like. AVOID! read more

Used to go here a lot as it's a few blocks from home. Past two visits, awful. Service was never great but it was awful. Japanese food is not bad but basic. Sodas come in tiny little glasses w/ no refills and are very expensive. Alcohol is basic and over priced, Chinese side is awful - food is mediocre at best, restaurant décor is terrible. If I can't eat in the Japanese side, I wouldn't stay. Warnings on the carry out... no delivery and I have NEVER gotten a carry out order that was correct - they always put in a wrong item or leave something out entirely (and yes we get charged, and yes we have to get in the car and drive back). The last visit, we ordered crème brulee for dessert (rare that we get dessert here at all) - we got a piece of cheesecake. I said, "This isn't crème brulee" waitress said, "yeah, we out - brulee cheesecake what we got." I said, "I don't want this." She snatched plate off table. When she brought the bill, cheesecake was still charged. I had to wait over 15 mins for someone to remove it from the bill. On the other hand, about 1 mile away is Harusame. It's awesome for Japanese food - great alcohol, terrific service and open late - never disappointed there - opt for Harusame instead! read more
