This place carries your average Chinese-American fare at the typical prices. The inside is a bit worn out and old, but the food is just fine. Their wonton soup is absolutely packed with wontons, and they offer wonton egg drop soup as well (a favorite of mine). Not bad for what it is. read more

This was once my favorite place but no more. Friend tried to get a reservation for 8 people but they said "no problem we are never busy". But they were and we sat and waited for 15 min to get our order taken. No tea. No hot mustard or sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls. I got the Szechuan style shrimp and my daughter got the sweat and sour chicken! First of the portions are very generous! Second I think it was the best Szechuan shrimp I've ever had and I've tried it from 4 other places around here and this is by far the best! The food was ready fast and easy was delivered still hot! Based on reviews and a gut feeling that Szechuan Hill would be great, I'm sorry to say it's not. The restaurant appears to do decent takeout business, but they've been hit hard by the pandemic. When we stopped by last week to eat inside, the owner/manager/person at the door said they expected to open but their server found other work. Determined to give them a leg up, we returned for takeout. The overall consensus: bland. Hot and sour soup had little taste. (As another Yelper pointed out, they have great broad crispy noodles.). I was hoping for bok choy and other Chinese vegetables with the shrimp, but there was a preponderance of broccoli and little else of interest. The sauce was so subtle it was barely detectable. Crispy beef was fine, but like everything else needed a tweak. Perhaps when things get back to business I'll give 'em another try. But for the meantime, it's on to other places. read more

Our go to Chinese take out place was closed today so we gave this place a shot and that was a big big mistake. Ordered vegetable lomein, chicken and broccoli and general tsos chicken - none of it was good. The lomein was dry, brown sauce in the chicken and broccoli tasted watered down so lacking any flavor and the chicken in the general tsos chicken tasted rubbery. I was coming here for years till last week. A few weeks prior I ordered chicken and broccoli. They forgot my rice. I called and asked if they would deliver the rice. I drove 40 minutes to get food from this restaurant because they usually have the best Chinese food around. We usually get something from there once per month. Not anymore. Their quality started to suffer during the pandemic but I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. Not anymore. They forgot to include the Sweet&Sour sauce that makes the entire entree edible. Otherwise, the chicken is bland and the vegetables that come with it are I tried to eat it without it and with the duck sauce but both bites were disgusting. There are so many Chinese places in this area that a diner can afford to be picky. This place is just fine for take out but there is nothing that makes it stand out. If I'm driving by and in a hurry it will do. Ditto regarding eating in. When I first met my future wife, I suggested we grab some lunch, and she didn't hesitate to say "Szechuan Hill!" Her good taste in food was a great sign of things to come! The decor -- older, but clean and in great shape. Who cares, you're here for the food. You really can't go wrong here -- For starters, try the Chi-Yang Chicken, which is spicy, crispy, and to die for. Or if Lo Mein is your thing, take your pick -- Pork, Chicken, Shrimp, etc...all excellent. Combined with a egg roll that is stuffed, and a hot bowl of their wonton, it's an excellent meal. In addition, Sze Hill also offers some great dine-in lunch combinations that will fill even the hungriest in your group for a fraction of the price. 10+ years later, we still make it a priority to eat here when in the area. Something has happened to the best Chinese restaurant in Drexel Hill. I have a theory in two words... no adults. In my last two visits (Spring 2014) there were no adults in the patron area to handle concerns that cropped up - twice being service, once being food. On visit #1 I requested brown rice instead of rice noodles in one of their specials. "No, we can't change it. It comes with noodles." I asked 'Really? ... what would happen?' "That's not how we make it." ?.. (so?) This resulted in a teen conclave and they, reluctantly?, agreed to make it. It was delicious ... why wouldn't it be. No apology from them. On visit #2 I asked for white sauce on a different special. "That won't be good." the waitress said. Ok, how come? There's nothing in there but ordinary ingredients and peanuts and bean sprouts. ??? Ok, again they gave in to a severely benign request. I asked for it a little spicy, standard request, never a problem before. Dish arrived, sauce was not white, but golden, and was not just spicy... but 10x as spicy .. liquid salt (and I do like salt). "This is not white sauce. And it's a little spicy ... why don't you take a taste?" ... "Yes, it is." "I think you should look again." Teen conclave #2. No answer whatsoever. No offer to fix it. No offer to order something else. I think that's enough. I'll wait for someone to post that their situation has been resolved. read more

I hate to give this place such a low rating as my experiences have varied. I'll be honest and say that I've only eaten here about 4 times, as I was a always a patron of the Lee Garden in Broomall. Unfortunately, the Lee Garden has closed. My first three experiences at Szechuan Hill were great! The food was excellent and I thought I had found a replacement for the Lee Garden.... On my fourth visit I ordered the same thing I always order, the General Tso Chicken platter which includes pork fried rice and an egg roll. My wife ordered the same and we split some Wonton Soup. I went to pick up our food, and as always the cashier was friendly. I brought the food home and my wife and I enjoyed a nice dinner together. About 15 mins later I began feeling very ill and faint. (I have no allergies or food related allergies.) Long story short, I became violently ill to the point of going to the E.R. as I was unable to walk or speak. I was essentially told that the food poisoning I had received was so severe that I had gone into a form of toxic shock. I write this review not as a rant, but to bring to light the inexcusable response we received from Szechuan Hill. When my wife called to explain what happened while I was in the E.R. the owners kept repeating "no refunds". We were not looking for a refund, we were simply trying to inquire if our food was prepared separate or together as we both had the exact same meal, yet only I was sick. Overall, had I not had that experience I would have given it a 4 star. read more

I love this place and come at least once a month for lunch. I have been here twice for dinner but my husband doesn't particularly like it so we choose it as a dinner option. I usually come with my kids for lunch on Saturdays because it is our time together. I love coming here because they know what my kids and I like and always make sure that we have everything that we need. The place is a typical Chinese restaurant with take-out options but I always eat in. It iisn't very fancy but the decor is bright and there is always plenty of seating. I love the hot and sour soup here because it is flavored well and uses my favorite canned mushroom slices. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me but I grew up working in a Chinese restaurant and love Chinese take out food...lol. I usually get the Kung Pao Chicken or Garlic Chicken lunch specials. I love both because of the texture and crunch of the veggies. The Garlic Chicken does come spicy but I always add hot oil to everything I eat with this included. I LOVE spice! My kids always get the hot and sour soup (which tells you that it isn't "hot" at all) but they love it. They also get the chicken skewers which are charbroiled and tasty. The spring rolls are crunchy and have small shrimps within. Sometimes they are a little greasy but that is to be expected with fried food typically. Service is great here. The guy that waits on us typically knows that I like hot oil and that my kids like extra cherries, so we are always well taken care of. The free hot tea and fried noodles are given to every table and we always enjoy it while waiting for our food. All in all, not a fancy restaurant, but that's not why we come here. Food is fresh and delicious with good service...what more can a girl ask for?! read more

The food is consistently Fresh, large portions for the money, and the taste of each dish is exactly the same high quality each time that we get any of the different dishes. The Service is outstanding for both Eat In and Take Out and the orders are always correct, hot and delicious and brought out in a reasonable amount of time. Upscale and fancy are the two words that you'll never see in the same sentence with this restaurant's name. What you will hear consistently is how good the food is.... I stop in here 2-3 times per month. The ladies that work here are very nice, welcoming, and helpful. The food is always hot and tasty. I've never had a disappointing meal here. The lunch specials are reasonably priced, and the meal size is usually more than you can eat at the time. If you are a Havertonian fan of Chinese food, you probably have your favorite spot. Szechuan Hill, Lei Lei, Hibachi, Dragon, Sampan - there are many to chose from. Every once in a while, a new contender pops in and your loyalty may waver for a bit, but I will bet you a couple of egg rolls that you eventually return to your roots. Szechuan Hill is that place for us. As newlyweds, we had a nearby apartment and SH was our spot for Chinese - eat in or take out. In the 20 some years since, we've moved around, tried many alternatives. Still, when in H'Town (where we live now) we would rather pick up at SH than get delivery from anywhere else. The food is darn good and exactly what you would expect from a restaurant of its genre and era. We play it safe here - pork, chicken, veggie - occasionally some beef or shrimp. Last night, we had the Chicken Chow Mien, Sesame Chicken, Tai Chin Beef, soup, egg rolls, dumplings, noodles and fried rice all for under $40. The menu mainstays are always well prepared, generous and in our experience, never subject to the pitfalls of poorly executed Chinese cuisine. Ordered Lo Mein. It was way over cooked, which caused it to be very soggy, soft and mushy. I tried my best to explain that it was to soft and soggy. I sent it back two times, and each time it came back with less and less spices! They, not understanding English, took it that I was saying it was too "salty", and kept removing more and more of the spices. What does a family of three do after arriving home a day early from their shore vacation thanks to hurricane Irene? Go straight to Drexel Hill for fine Chinese food, of course. We usually go to Samuri Steak House a few doors down and strangely, we never dined at Szechuan Hill before. The wonton soup had three wontons in the cup instead of the usual two at other restaurants. I ordered the garlic chicken platter. Granted, the menu indicated one pepper's worth of spiciness and I thought, sure, I'm game. Well, Holy Toledo, batman! My sinuses are still scarred two days later. Okay, not really, but that was not expected! The egg roll was crisp on the outside and not at all greasy. My son approved of the egg foo young and my husband had moo shoo beef. The portions were generous and arrived relatively quickly after ordering. As someone who often finds Chinese restaurants kind of dark and claustrophobia-inducing, I appreciated the bright decor and high ceilings. Not particularly high-end, but aesthetically pleasing nonetheless. Overall, a nice place to go if you're in the area, but probably not worth traveling a great distance. read more

I am so happy to have finally tried this place. We've lived in DH for four years and have been constantly searching for a good local Chinese restaurant. Our regular places have either changed ownership or lost favor. Last night we got takeout. I ordered my regular which gives me a good indication of the restaurant's abilities and freshness, shrimp and broccoli with fried rice. We ordered the tofu General Tso's, vegetable lomein, spring rolls, cheese wontons, egg drop soup, sweet & sour shrimp, the equivalent of General Tso's Shrimp, shrimp with broccoli and yet another shrimp and broccoli dinner, I think it had cashews on top. Can you tell it was a Friday night during Lent? Every dish was promptly served and very hot, however, our waitress seemed a bit inexperienced, but very nice and wanted to get our order correct! Best. Dumplings. Ever!! I have probably had well over 2000 dumplings since I last began to appreciate them back in college. After months of searching for a good dumpling near Philadelphia, these dumplings finally hit the spot. The steamed pork are obviously the best, but the fried veggie are good too. When you pull up, it doesn't look like much aside from your typical stripmall Chinese food restaurant. However, it's super cute on the inside. Very clean, sweet service, and little fried crispies with duck dipping sauce and hot tea waiting for you at your table. My boyfriend and I went on a rainy Monday night, so we were literally the only people there. But, in the half hour we were there, they probably had 10-12 people picking up their orders. The general tsos is a favorite and the vegtable lo mein never dissappoints. When you eat there they give you great tea and crackers. It is also a great place for chinese pizza. Tried this place after our go to place ( Dragon Garden ) closed. I rate Chinese food by two things: steamed dumplings and the Gen Szo chicken. Both are on point.
