I had a wonderful experience at Sam's Bagels during my visit to Maryland a couple weekends ago! I was with three friends, and we wanted to grab lunch but didn't want to go through the whole process of being seated at a restaurant. We wanted something more casual. We came across Sam's on Light Street, and we were luckily able to snag a table for four right by the window. I think that's fairly uncommon for this place, but we got lucky that day. I ordered an iced coffee and an everything bagel toasted with the lox-flavored cream cheese. My order, along with the rest of my group, came out quickly and we all enjoyed our food. The egg is for sure underwhelming, but the bagel is so good it doesn't matter. Definitely not your best pick for general sandwiches, but that's not what you're here for. I love this little breakfast shop in the middle of Fed Hill. Great coffee, great sandwiches, great bagels, great prices. It's owned by a local Korean family and feels exactly like a small family-run shop. A bagel with choice of cream cheese or an egg with cheese on toast are great go-to choices. I walked in and immediately felt like I was in NYC, old lady at the counter barking at customers and other workers. No greeting, no smiles. I went for the everything bagel with plain cream cheese. I came this past weekend and I hope I never have to come back. I ordered a sausage, egg and cheese on a jalapeño bagel. Seems kind of hard to mess up a simple breakfast sandwich, but this place sure did. First off, you can see them using microwaves to make the food. When I got my sandwich the cheese wasn't melted and the sausage looked like mystery meat. If I wasn't starving I would have just thrown it away. I got about halfway through and then just had to get rid of it away because I think it was making me sick. I also got a coffee and thought at least this would be good. I tried the Southern Pecan flavored coffee, but this was also a disappointment. It tasted really old. Inside was also kind of gross. The trash was overflowing everywhere. They have a good selection of classic bagels, including an excellent everything bagel and the best darn Asiago bagel I've ever had; as well as flavors I've never heard of, like crunchy sunflower. You can order a few bagels and grab some prepackaged schmear, or you can do what I do almost every weekend and order a bagel sandwich with the works. I also really enjoy their breakfast sausage with cheese on a toasted flakey croissant. Wash it down with an iced coffee and I'm a happy camper! The place is almost always packed in the mornings, so you might have to take your breakfast to go and sit along the harbor (such torture! ). RACIAL MICROAGRESSIONS ARE REAL: I have been going to Sam's Bagels in Baltimore's Federal Hill for years. I swear they make the best bagels in the city. It is two blocks from my church and after early morning choir practice I usually run down, grab a bagel and a drink, and run back in time for service. The shop appears to be Korean owned but the woman at the counter weekends is an elderly white lady. Never had a problem with her. Always pleasant. On Sunday I brought a bagel and an orange juice, paid her $6, got my change and put a $1 bill in the tip jar. Two young white women in line before me had bought a meal and used a credit card. I sat down, waiting for my cinnamon raisin bagel to toast and get slathered with butter, just the way I like it. And that white lady yelled at me from across the shop, startling me from the Spades game I was playing on my phone. "Your credit card didn't go through! You have to come back and pay." All eyes turned to me, the sole Black person in the establishment. Like I was some kind of scammer. Trust, if I was it wouldn't be for a bagel. She obviously didn't know who she was playing with. "Excuse me. I didn't pay with a debit card. I paid with cash," I yelled right back. "You know, those two women over there in front of me paid with a debit card. Why don't you have them run it again." I motioned toward the two white women who were sitting by the door. The lady at the counter looked embarrassed. "Oh, that's okay. Just let it go." No apology. No nothing. She profiled me, probably because I am Black and just let these two white biddies eat for free because she was too ashamed to admit it. I'm not surprised this happened. I'm a middled aged Black man with a decent job, a homeowner, and pay my taxes. And I still get followed around in stores. Or as soon as I walk in the clerk says, "We only take debit cards," I guess to deter me if I'm a robber coming to get their cash. I think it's time for me to find a new bagel shop. read more

One of the several local Federal Hill bagel/coffee/sandwich shops, this "less than hoity toity" little place is a good cheap quick place (usually quick) for just that... bagels, coffee and/or sandwiches. As others have commented, there isnt much space inside and the lines sometimes extend throughout the seating area, but patrons are usually accommodating (by perhaps reaching inside the drink fridge to grab me an Orange Juice) and its still worth a little crowding around for a quick meal. The bagels are all usually very fresh but get there before noon or your favs will be gone. They have a few limited special bagels like the Jalapeno/Cheese and a couple others that sell out fast. Outdoor tables are usually available on nice days and the atmosphere is always casual. Be sure to close the front door behind you on the way IN and OUT! My only complaint is they have never gone to a simple "Order Number" system... instead they call out the bagel(s) / sandwich(es) you've ordered and sometimes can get confusing with 19 people inside waiting for similar orders :) It'd be much simpler to just call out "Order #44!?... The food alone I would give 3 or 4 stars. For being the only real bagel place in this part of of the city, it's pretty much all there is to offer. I have been to other Sam's locations in the past and they were OK but the Light St. location seems to be going down hill. The selection of different bagels is the one good thing I would mention. They do have more than just your standard selection (cinnamon sugar is awesome). They are always keeping the variatety updated with fresh batches so these different flavors are usually stocked and ready to order. Other than the selection, there isn't much else I can compliment Sam's on Light St. with. The size of the actual bagels are in no way proportionate to the price that you pay. $5 for a breakfast sandwich? Especially when you are using microwave eggs and cheese I could have gotten from the 7-Eleven down the street? Please. Then there's the older white lady that another reviewer had mentioned, I'm assuming she's the owner. She is just a miserable person. I equate her to a popular character from Seinfeld and refer to her as the Bagel Nazi. I can understand when the line is long and things are busy, one can be short tempered. I have been in there when it's empty and she is still just as nasty at 7am on a Tuesday morning as she is on Saturday morning when she's dealing with the hungover twenty-somethings still wearing their happy hour bracelets from the night before. All things considered, the place is very hard to recommend. There are plenty of better places not too far from here such as Towson Hot Bagel and yes even Dunkin Donuts. Avoid this place if you can. And if you can't, make sure the owner has had her coffee for the morning, don't make eye contact with her, and for the love of God don't hold up the line. read more

Just visiting for the night and in the morning, the group of us went to Sam's (open on New Year's morning!) The breakfast menu is really expansive and they have a ton of bagels. My boyfriend and I shared an everything bagel w/ lox spread and an oatmeal whole wheat bagel w/ veg cream cheese. Both were pretty decent. I think the lox & everything was a better combination. The had no patience for the customers she was taking orders from. Then she tried to charge a man $3.12 for approximately 2 Tablespoons of cream cheese- I'm sorry but that's absurd. I got a sesame bagel with lox spread. The bagel was toasted to death. The bottom was so dense that I could taste that it was burnt. The lox spread tasted like pink speckled cream cheese and the amount they put on my bagel probably equalled the amount in the small container the woman said was $3.12.
