SO FREAKIN RUDE worse service I have ever experienced in my 28 years of life! We first get there it's my husband my 2 year old daughter an we first walk in everyone is staring at us like we shouldn't be there (like in a scary movie when someone rushes into a place asking for help an everyone stares confused that's what we experienced) in stead of greeting us we wait to be seated an the white guy has an attitude an says sit anywhere so we do the waitress comes up asks what to drink instead of having proper customer service then brings menus an basically throws them on the table instead of saying oh sorry or something she walks away we order our food she drops it's off doesn't even ask can I get u anything else doesn't even come to check on us she just puts the check on the table 5 min after receiving our food when we were done we sat an waited for her to come so we can get boxes at this point we're already annoyed my husband had to get up his self an ask for a box when he asks for a box the white guy dropped the box on the floor in front of my husband picks it up an hands it to him like he didn't just drop it on the floor my husband had to tell him for another box u just dropped that one on the floor like are u serious that's disgusting. Instead of being like oh I'm sorry I just dropped that let me get u a new one he seriously was about to had it to my husband after it just touched the floor. I will NEVER EVER EAT HERE AGAIN. How this place is in business is beyond me if ur Mexican or any other race other then white don't go here you will be treated like crap. read more

I called in my order for take out. I had read reviews saying chicken fried steak is good and woman on the phone told me they had a lunch special for that today. It was ready when I got there and a good lunch special. It came with salad or soup. I got the salad; just lettuce cheese and tomato but it was fresh and tasty. Let me say ......an egg is an egg. However, country potatoes are a different thing. I usually order hash browns because country potatoes tend to be hard. Not the case at Sam's. Their country potatoes are soooo good! Soft and crunchy at the same time. I highly recommend it! read more

when i first came here it was good and the people were so welcoming and nice the service was definitely the best i've gotten before the server woman with blonde hair who works on the weekends is wonderful the only reason i come back and the cooks on the weekend truly do make breakfast the best part of the day but i had recently came back on a tuesday and it was not the same at all no "good mornings" not welcoming at all the lady with the black face shield was truly the worst server ive had took forever to gets waters and then never came back to get our orders so then another server came to take our orders as she was taking out orders she rudely cut us off to go and talk to a customer or was walking out n clearly saw us ordering i had never got refill on my water forgot the cheese in my eggs and then forgot my english muffin and half my food came out cold definitely would not recommend this place if you see them on the weekdays but weekends are definitely must read more

Great breakfast large portions. My advice is go early especially on a Sunday. Will return again, great small diner.

If you are a person of color THIS IS NOT an establishment you want to visit. My girlfriend and I went went to Sam's Cafe for the first time for breakfast. Our waitress was a caucasian female with blonde hair. She had on black shoes, white shorts, and a light blue shirt. Didn't catch her name because she never gave it to us. Immediately when she came over we could already sense she had somewhat of an attitude. She basically took our order and NEVER said anything else to us. My girlfriend didn't want a full meal with eggs, bacon, etc. she only wanted pancakes. Waitress overcharged us as if she got everything included. Also we asked for syrup. She never gave us any. I, ME, THE CUSTOMER, had to go to the front stand to ask for syrup AND water because she never asked us if we would like a refill. While all this was going on she was speaking and checking in on all the other tables around us EXCEPT ours laughing smiling and playing with babies. Towards the end of our meal a different waitress in a camo shirt asked if we would like a refill so maybe she felt bad about the service. Who knows. Food was decent. BUT SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE. Went here for my first time last week for lunch. I had always heard great things about this place and was excited when I found out they reopened. As I walked in it was a little confusing because I didn't know if I was supposed to wait to be seated but an employee was quick to tell me to sit wherever I wanted. I sat there for about five minutes staring at the menu. Finally, one worker asked what I wanted to drink. She was clearly not one of the waitresses as she bussing tables but I was glad she took notice. After I received my drink, another older man walked in and sat down. Within a few seconds a waitress went over to greet him and took his drink order. It was obvious she knew him. This is when I realized this was a place for regulars, not new business like me. The same worker that took my drink order stood next to me at point and got my waitresses attention. I'm glad this worker noticed I was ready to order, and had been for a while. The waitress came over and took my order. She was pleasant but was quick. My food arrived minutes later but my drink had gone dry. It took me while to flag down my waitress for a refill. Another patron had a similar problem trying to get her attention. The food was great and portions were awesome. No complaints about the food one bit. My only complaint was the lack of attention on service. It wasn't bad, no one was rude...but it could have been better. Left a mediocre tip and I was gone. As I drive away I thought, "will I be back?" Not sure. Still need to try Bobs at their new location in Ceres. Oh yea, and that panini place and when the new Hawaiian place opens up. Regulars are great if you're looking for the same consistent income every month. However, creating new customers is what brings in $$$. Hopefully others will have a better experience than me. Food is basic, but delicious and servings can be huge. Don't look for gourmet or specialty, such as vegan, but, if you like home cooking, this is where you can get it. I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because of lack of diversity...a sin in today's world. Also, unless you come early, or late, prepare to wait as seating area is limited. We stopped in after reading good reviews. It was crowded and service wasn't very good. I ordered a chicken fried steak sandwich. It came with mac. salad. It was good but the steak was tough and chewy. There wasn't anything on the roll. Nothing.. onions pickle and tomato on side. No sauce or mayo nothing. No check in once she gave us our food. My wife and I have been coming for a couple years now, and for the folks saying that they feel the restaurant employees seem racist, put that card back in your deck, they are far from it. When my wife and I come in, I always greet the staff with a hug, as well as when we leave. They always make us feel welcomed and comfortable. As far as the food, no matter what I order for breakfast, I always get the biscuits and gravy. Being from the South, I know it's the black pepper that makes the gravy, so I add as much as I need, to finish the plate. Not all people like a lot of pepper, so their gravy won't have the flavor they're expecting. I have had to wait a bit for a waitress/ waiter to take my order a couple times, but that just meant that I had more time to spend alone with my wife and or kids talking. I have only one expectation, and that's at least 3 cups of coffee before my meal arrives. So far, they haven't let me down, and i doubt they ever will. Finally, sometimes the regulars spend a little time chatting with the waiters/waitresses, but that time gets spread throughout the patrons of the restaurant. read more

Breakfast is my favorite meal so when I find a good place for it I eat there a lot. This is my breakfast place. I've been eating here weekly for years. The waitresses are all extremely nice. The reviews on here from people saying they were treated rudely are more than likely from assholes who feel that way everywhere they go, because they are just that, assholes. You know who you are. I ordered the linguica omelette and my fiancé the chicken fried steak. I loved the sourdough toast. My omelette was ok and freshly made. But my fiance's steak was greasy and flavorless. He also got the biscuits and gravy. The gravy was white and had no flavor, the biscuits seemed fluffy but tasted like plain flour. We were hoping for something better. We won't be back. read more

Food came out perfect, one thing I did notice though was my hash browns didn't come out fully cooked but just cooked enough for me to enjoy. Front staff ladies where very sweet and helpful. I did want a water with my coffee but was never asked but I'm not too bothered by that. One thing that triggered me was how the busboy took a box of silverware across the whole kitchen dropping crazy amounts of water onto the floor potentially putting the safety of the front staff at risk of slip hazard. Silverware was put away covered in water (bacteria risk) out of the 2/3 chefs they had in the back I only saw one wearing a set of gloves as I watched the others wiping sweat off foreheads. I just discovered Sam's Café when a friend invited me to Sam's Café this morning. I had the "Garbage Omlette" and it was perfect. It had everything except linguica. Yhe food was served hot, perfect amount of cheese, and country potatoes. Best of all it was not greasy. I have not had a better breakfast anywhere in Modesto and the prices were reasonable. First and last time coming in. As I got there they just stared. One couldn't put her phone down at all. Kept texting. Had to get up to get my own high chair. We have been to Sam's several times. Today I ordered the biscuits and gravy, my hubby ordered ham and eggs. The food was very bland. The gravy tasted like flour. The waitress ignored us completely. Several people came in that she called by name, regulars. She was rude and acted like we were a bother. She'll never call me by my first name, we won't go back to become regulars. I always give people the benefit of the doubt....maybe she's having a bad day, maybe she's stressed because she's busy.....etc....She was so sweet and friendly to the gentlemen at the next table.
