Considering, we were going to take-out some lunch for the us & the grand children, then we keep getting text from son, he won't be home, grab a sandwich, etc. then another text, he's got pizza! So with that said, we just grabbed two Reuben Sandwich and fries. We divided the sandwiches into petite sizes, and re-heated the fries in the oven. Verdict: 1. The 8th year old's first taste of sauerkraut, took two small bites. He prefer the pizza (we were the experimental, from the oven a pepperoni and 3 kinds of cheese with basil), and we ate his portion of Rueben. 2. The 17year old's also first taste, and she ate it, but I forgot to ask how was it. 3. The son only asked if it has corn beef or pastrami), I guess he never had Rueben sandwich before, either. We didn't ask how he liked it. 4. & 5. We both enjoyed the sandwiches, fries and coleslaw. Photo showed, we brought home the remaining sandwiches, and having it for breakfast, enough for two, to fill us up, while I write my review. $12 Coors Light pitchers and plenty of pool tables. That would be enough but Sam's has plenty more! There is ample seating, a solid bar kitchen with very good fries, a respectable selection of tap beers and a few TVs around so you can keep an eye on the game. Three of us went to have dinner at Sam's. There was a blonde haired lady with weird glasses on that was unbelievably rude. So rude, we turned around and walked out. Last time we were there two weeks ago the waiter told us we could eat upstairs anytime we want it. I asked her about eating upstairs and she growled at me practically and one of us was waiting downstairs at a table and she was rude to him also. I might add we have been to Sam's many times. Was traveling for a surprise visit, went direct from PDX to get some practice on the table. Very nice tables 6 9 foot and 3 7 foot tables downstairs. Was told there were more 9 footers upstairs. Settled down and got two hours of practice in. Was a bit tired to go around the corner to a restaurant and stayed as I saw something on the menu that you don't see in too many billiard establishments, Moco Loco. So I ordered that and killed two pints of the local Pilsner, the brewery name escapes me, with my meal. The meal was a fantastic, with a gigantic mound of salad. Raved about how inexpensive it was to my wife after I flew home the next day. I'm looking forward to coming back next year and exploring the northeast neighborhoods with more time. And play/practice while I'm here again. read more

Beautiful pool tables . Upstairs and down . Fifteen , I counted . Maybe more . Place is dark and huge inside . House cue's available . Hourly rate is $5 to $6 for happy hour , $15 to $16 reg times . NO CHILDREN ALLOWED . They check ALL I.D. before you can proceed . Burgers , soups and salads , loaded fries , etc.....Typical pub grub . Very clean and well maintained . Update: I shared a review and mentioned a bartender that was giving me a hard time for no reason. Kelly the bartender. I haven't been in, almost 6 months since i left that review. I came in recently and she said im 86 because of the HONEST review I left. Will be reporting this as CRFA should've protected me from leaving an honest review. I said nothing bad about the establishment and asked if she would tell me why she is so mad but she made up three different stories including, ran after me after I left and called me "a f*cking bitch" and went back inside the building. Who does and acts like this?? To make up a random story was truly the icing on top. Instead of talking to a customer who treated her with respect to just try to talk it out, her response was "why do I need to talk to you or fix anything" Uh because I'm a customer and have never been hostile for you to be treating another human being with such disgust? Not only does she not tell the truth, she's a bully. i have a recording of her, the date and time this happened and it's also on their security cameras if they would like to look it up. Running after me to cuss me out? Real professional. documenting this to report it to the FTC. read more

How have I not written a review of one of my go to billiard pubs in the heart of the Hollywood District? I have been a frequent customer for as long as I can remember. Even my Dad who grew up in the neighborhood was a regular at one point in his life. Sure people do come here to play pool and their HH is stellar, but they have quite a few large TV's and a great menu including dessert options! As soon as I walk in, I fill a cup of water at the self service station, sit down at a table, then order at the bar. If it's HH, I usually opt for the 2 bacon cheese sliders with fries as it usually fills me up with their generous portions. On Tuesday's, I will order a bowl of chili and top it with jalapeno slices for a nice heat kick. The staff knows most of the patrons that come and go and it definitely has a great neighborhood vibe.] I have had a birthday gathering here a few years ago and the staff took care of everyone in our group. I like to come here when it's just me and I want to get some reading done. It's also great for friend gatherings as well. They have specials once in a while and they are worth checking out if available. They do offer breakfast and again their portions are generous. One time, I brought my Dad and Uncle for lunch and they ordered the fish and chips. It was so huge when it arrived they could have easily shared one plate. When I volunteer on Sundays, customers will ask me where to eat and I usually send them over to Sam's. Showed up around 8 after a show to have a casual night eating bar food & playing pool. On these loose type of nights I always make sure I'm going to a place that has none of my allergies apart of the menu so I have nothing to worry about & any issue occurring. my experience was much more than that. My date and I ordered our food & sat down, my eyes wandered around per usual & then I noticed "crab cakes" on daily menu, I'm deathly allergic to shellfish. I instantly knew I would feel horrible telling the front of house what I ordered ten minutes ago was something that could kill me. I went up & told him. Normally every single restaurant I've been to , all around the country, over $100 a plate would be rude to me or tell me I need to order something different, but this time was DIFFERENT. Front of house was so so sooooo accommodating way more than you would expect in current day. He kept checking at the table & updating me to what he was communicating to the chefs & what they were doing to make sure I was safe eating their food. I was speechless. It's so rare to have someone care like that. THEN the young man who brought my food out in the young thug spider hoodie was on the same page... just amazing staff I would've never guessed to have this experience. Like pool? This is a place to check out. It's situated on a corner right down the street from the Hollywood Theater. Parking can be tricky, there is a lot next door with pay to park but there is no location number on the sign so you can't really pay to park. There is street parking available in the area. The facility itself is pretty big. They have a large bar area and 6 pool tables downstairs. I'm not sure what's upstairs but the fact that there is an upstairs should tell you something about patronage. They have a pretty good happy hour menu for both food and drinks. You can also get discounted rates on pool during happy hour. The service was great. We had several people check on is while we were eating and they checked in a few times while we were playing pool. I worked at the rite aid across the street from Sams for a few months, and never made the trip inside until after I quit. Outside, it looks spooky and has that typical dive bar feel, but inside totally flips the script. It's designed in a dive bar fashion, but the drinks and food are delicious, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the other patrons seemed to be having a good time as well. An inviting atmosphere with sooo many pool tables, even on a packed Saturday night they manage to not have a wait time to use one. I have a good time everytime I come by, and if you're a Portland native like I am, you'll find something in it for you too. Great bar food and a nice gaming atmosphere. Service is good, however the last time we visited we were required to have ID just to get in, even if we weren't ordering alcohol. We were with my in-laws and everyone was over 40. I had to walk back to the house to get my wife's ID. Seemed a little bit excessive since nobody looked even close to being under 30 years of age. Especially since OLCC doesn't require customers to carry ID, and they only require customers under 26 to be checked. read more

I don't play pool/billiards, but I end up at Sams quite a bit. Odd right? Well I go to the Hollywood quite often and Sams has now become my defacto place to wet my whistle before a movie now that Velo Cult and Blackwells closed. Sams is also a great dive bar on top of being a pool hall. Lots of nice little dark nooks to hide in and imbibe your well poured drinks. The food is surprisingly good as well. On multiple occasions I've gotten their soup of the day and have been pleasantly surprised by how tasty it is. There is also a secret upstairs that I don't think many people know about that has a real 50s diner aesthetic. I can't really comment on the pool tables themselves because I don't know the first thing about pool, but they always seem pretty packed with people that appear to know what they are doing. read more

The outside gives you the impression it's a dark, dank pool hall from the 50's with enough second hand smoke from yesteryear to ruin a greasy meal. Not true. That's why it's important not to judge a book by its cover...and listen to your yelp community. We've got your back! What we found was plenty of comfy seating, friendly staff, one of the best bloody Mary's in town, outstanding fresh food, served in an open setting. The commercial kitchen was huge and open as well. This was one the best breakfasts I have had in recent memory. Plus, it looks like they have a good selection of beers on tap, happy hour specials, and did I mention they serve breakfast seven days a week?! What's not to love! read more

My boyfriend and I just love this place. We had our first date here and ever since, all the staff seem to remember us and our drink orders. All of the staff are so kind and ensure a COVID safe environment with masks on unless you're eating or drinking. In order to play pool, you rent the balls by the hour (5-12 bucks depending on day and time). They have tons of tables and I've rarely had to wait. There are a mix of serious pool players and just people wanting to have fun but no judgement on either end. They have a few tv's spread around and will put on what games you want if you ask! Sams is actually pretty perfect. I have been here for a variety of reasons. Let's start with the latest. A group of my friends and I saw an epic movie over at the Hollywood Theater and we needed to have somewhere to wrap up together. This was perfect - we easily ordered drinks ranging from beer, wine and cocktails and were able to grab, even on a Friday night, a big chunk of table space to fit us all. Paying separately at the bar was no big deal at all. I have been here several times with friends even to just grab some quick food. They have a pretty good and simple menu. I wanted a salad which was great and a friend grabbed a burger which was also pretty great. Cheap bar eats prepared well! I have a set of friends who do their birthday festivities here every year which is always a good time playing pool by the hour in the upstairs. There is a great amount of space and places for group seating with couches or tables. The pool tables are great and you can have some great games. read more

I come here for the cheese burger and fries :) The place is HUGE! There are a ton of pool tables downstairs as well as upstairs. Locals dig this joint. It is a true Portland staple that I hope stays around for years to come. It has a slight diner feel at the counter. Order at the bar and grab a seat at a table if you want as well. Just let the bartender where you are sitting and they will bring you the food. Sometimes the wait at the bar can take a bit. They usually only have maybe one or two people running to the tables and getting drinks behind the bar so just be patient and expect this. The food is good and once you order the wait is minimal. I like to go here and grab dinner before hitting up a show at Hollywood. Good spot to meet up with friends! read more

Almost gave it 1 star, but decided on 2 stars because it wasn't horrible, just very dis-satisfying. 1st off, service was good. No complaints there. I got the philly cheesesteak with au-jus & fries. Menu (brand new printed on the door) said $12, I was charged $12.50. Seems pricey for what you get. The meat in the cheesesteak was spongy and weird. Kinda tasted the meat from a microwave dinner. The au-jus tasted like diluted brown gravy. The fries had no seasoning, no flavor, and I ended up throwing them away. 1st & last time eating there. read more
