Needed to stop for some form of food as I drove back to Michigan. This BBQ came to the rescue!! It's a little off the beaten path if you're driving through Palestine, but TOTALLY worth it. I'm pretty picky on my BBQ: always need a couple of slices of marbled tender brisket, smoky bbq sauce, and a baked potato. But WOW, this place though!! As a Dallas native, I approve and highly recommend this joint. Pricing was very reasonable and the waitress was patient as I inquired which sides had pork in it. The owner was extremely friendly, and stopped by every once in awhile to check up on everyone without feeling pushy. Best part: THE BBQ SAUCE! Rumps has re-opened. Praise da Lort!!!! This is one of the finest eating establishments west of the Mississippi. I believe President Trump has eaten here before during one of his campaign trails, he gave it a 5 star rating as well. As we arrived after the place being closed, we weren't exactly sure what to expect. Shortly after we walked through the front door and saw all the amazing desserts on the counter, we all knew we had picked the right place for lunch. Everythang we all chose to ate (which was a shitload) was finger lickin' good! By the time we got done, everyone was high 5'n and listening to each other stomachs, because we all thought we were pregnant. Thankfully we were not. We were visiting relatives in Palestine and wanted some bbq so ended up at Rump's. I got the three meat special which consists of a choice of three meats and two sides. There was a lot of food and I could not finish mine. If I return I will show a little restraint. I got ribs, sausage, and brisket with fried okra and fried corn on the cob. The fried corn on the cob seems to be a house speciality and consists of a piece of corn which has been boiled, battered and fried. Interesting but I would not order again. The fried okra was very good as was the sausage. The brisket was a little dry. Service was efficient and friendly. I would certainly return but I don't know if I would make a special trip. read more

so here's the deal: i grew up going to church with susan, the owner, in a super religious it's-so-strict-you-can't-even-play-musical-instruments kind of church. i got out of that jam as soon as i could. it was far too stifling to my sensitive, artistic, way off center self. but here's the thing... if church had been as welcoming as this place is, i might have stuck around. (well... not likely... but i might have handled it a teeny bit longer) let's be clear - this restaurant is jesus friendly. there's "god" stuff all over the place. but the other things you notice bring rump's to a level that even our old church couldn't have gotten to. for starters, i don't think i ever saw an interracial marriage at my church. and here, the owners show their beautiful, colorful love front and center. speaking of colorful... some of the hair here is blue and green. love that display of people being who they want to be! and further, there are some rainbow bracelets, which indicate inclusion and a perhaps different take on love than you'd normally find deep in the heart of texas. this is what an actual church should exhibit... friendship, welcoming acceptance, comradery: love in all its glorious forms. it just happens to be found in a bbq joint way off the beaten path... and yeah, the food is pretty darned good too. that kind of happens when it's made with love, now doesn't it? read more

Carlos, I met you in passing yesterday (Sunday, 03-28-21) at Norma Farris' Retirement party. If I had known then what I know now, I would have engaged in an elongated conversation with you. Apparently a fellow I work with owns up to actually knowing you. His name is Kelvin Morrison and he professes to be your cousin. I was explaining how wonderful your catered Bar-B-Que was and he interrupted me and asked "Did they have 'red shirts'?" I explained they had maroon colored shirts with an insignia on the left side. He went on to say "I know who they are. That is my cousin, Carlos! That was "Rumps Bar-B-Que"! And he is my cousin!" Personally, I think your Bar-B-Que is wonderful, save the cole slaw, but you could have made a better choice in cousins. Kelvin may not be the best looking one in your herd, but he is very, very good at what he does. He is a nice guy and should be patted on the head every chance you get. Your meal was well served, however, the cole slaw lacked the "zing" to which I am accustomed. Then again, I am Caucasian, as Kelvin reminds me from time to time and I do not do real spicy foods. The cole slaw needs "something" to make it a little tastier. EVERYTHING else was perfect. Should you every require a "taste tester" on any of your menu items, please do not hesitate to contact me. Found this restaurant on yelp, was in Palestine . Short drive into the country, will reward you with a 5 Star menu and service. The BBQ and ribs were off the chart, as well as the Gumbo we tried. The 5:00 o'clock patrons were coming and going, and lots of smiles and friendly banter when entering, could they tell we were new patrons ? Well the regulars have know about Rumps for 8 years, and we are so glad to have found them. One of the best BBQ places I've ever been. Sliced brisket was perfectly smoked and tender enough to fall apart on my fork. No knife needed. Fried okra was fresh and crispy. We've been to Rump's a couple times. We've only had the ribeye steak and chicken fried steak. Both are excellent. We've had the ribeye twice and it is always tender and juicy and we only eat well done meat. The desserts are awesome and the service is even better than the food. The owner comes by and chats with everyone and checks to make sure the food is enjoyable. We always try to stop by when we are in town and were disappointed when we can't get by before they close. read more

We came in right before closing with a large party. They were very accommodating and we received great service despite this. My son ordered the brisket and he says it was the best he has ever eaten. The best barbecue I've had. We're from SC and the barbecue there is good but different and I haven't had great BBQ there. It's usually served dry and you add sauce after. Here at Rumps I had the brisket BBQ. Wow, moist and tasty and that was without added sauce! But when I did try it with sauce , even that was amazing. The potato salad was off the charts amazing !! My husband had the pecan pie (which he loves) I tried it - I don't even like pecan pie but had to have a few bites. What a delicious and sinfully buttery dessert. The atmosphere is fun and country. The owner walked around and talked with us a bit and joked around and made the experience even better. Texas longhorns are across the street and inside they had on old Western movies playing. Making a move from Dallas to Palestine and decided to check out Rump's BBQ. The food was awesome and the service was great as well. I will definitely be stopping in at least once a month. We had the brisket and beef ribs plate with fried okra and dirty rice. The brisket was tender and juicy and the ribs fell right off the bone. I have been there once with a group. Service was hit or miss, We came in a few minutes late and were seated with our group but I finally had to stop a waitress after seeing her take orders from new people arriving after after us. She seated us! Everyone else in our group was 1/2 finished eating. The food was good, BBQ brisket, sausage, and ribs. BBQ sauce was good as well as the sides. Many choices on the menu also. There is also fried fish and shrimp on the menu. One of the group ordered it and it looked good also. I will have to go back to try it. On checking out, I noticed several desserts, pies and cakes that looked good. You have to know to order them, we were not asked if we wanted dessert. It was on a Friday night and they were a bit busy, but not packed. There is two good sized dining rooms and the place was very clean. It is a bit off the beaten path, if driving out on Hwy 79 going towards Oakwood, Texas turn right on FM 645 just after the Walmart Warehouse and go 5 miles towards Tennessee Colony. Although we had never been to the Palestine TX area before, we were able to try out several local area restaurants. Rump's was, by far the best place we ate during our stay. The BBQ is homestyle delicious. The fish and other meats are incredible. Try their gumbo, it is about the best you can get this far away from Louisiana. Great side-dishes. The desserts are freshly made and really top off the entire meal. We were strangers to the area and to Rump's, but Carlos, the owner, made us feel like old friends who have just come by to visit and eat. So all I can say is don't fool around looking for a place to eat when you are in the Palestine TX area. I guarantee that if you eat at Rump's you never forget it! Although we were visiting Palestine TX for different reasons, we will definitely be visiting it again because of Rump's!! read more
