Absolutely love this place! I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of sushi, but this place has managed to make a sushi fan out of me. Place was pretty busy so you can tell they are popular. I ended up dropping over $35+ on two sushi rolls which is pretty pricey considering there are good AYCE sushi places that charge less than $30. However, in this town, this spot is probably one of the better sushi locations. The presentation of the food is done very well (great for those instagram/snapchat fiends). The portion size is good. The restaurant ambience is nice. The service is friendly and quick. The actual taste of the food is solid but not to die for. The parking lot is not the best, especially when it is crowded. Was craving sushi whilst visiting Erie, and read good reviews about Samurai. I have a lot to say, so I'm going to condense and break it up into categories: Ambiance--Offer indoor seating, but we sat out back where they had a "deck" area and additional tables set up in the parking lot, complete with string lights. The music choice (polka and other instrumental numbers), was slightly off-putting. Food--They had run out of our first two picks for app's, so we decided on the calamari (not fried) and pot stickers. The pot stickers were not what I'm used to: teeny, one-bite, quarter-sized, though both app's were very good. As for the rest of the menu, there were tons of options for both sushi and non-sushi lovers. We ordered an assortment of their standard rolls like spicy tuna, Philly, crab stick, avocado, and one specialty roll. The standard rolls came with 8 pieces and the specialty roll may have been 10. My husband had the steak and shrimp hibachi, and couldn't finish all of it. Final thoughts: Overall, a solid choice. 5/5 for portions and affordability. -1 for music choice, running out of menu items and the waitresses seeming stressed and a little disorganized. read more

I was in the area visiting family today and I've been meaning to get to Samurai for awhile, so we stopped in for takeout. They had just opened their patio as Erie County had entered the "green phase" during Covid-19, but servers, hostesses, and chefs were wearing face masks. The interior of the restaurant is sleek and modern. The menu is Southwest Asian inspired. Staff were polite during our brief stay. Since it was their first day fully opened, they were busy and our order took a few extra minutes, but it was worth it. The menu is pretty extensive and has something for everyone. We were mainly ordering sushi, but some of my other family members had noodle and hibachi dishes and were happy with their choices. The highlight for me was the Amazing Tuna Roll, but we had other hand rolls and kitchen appetizers that were great also. Everything was packaged and plated well in the to-go containers. We were definitely happy with our meals. I'll be sure to come back next time I'm looking for sushi in Erie. read more

I used to be a frequent customer, but I haven't been in Erie for a while. Today, I was able to stop by and I ordered the Poké bowl. I was immediately reminded of how tasty their food is! Usually other places skimp on the raw fish, but Samurai gave such generous portions - I was pleasantly surprised! It was so satisfying to eat such fresh fish and seaweed salad. Being allergic to wheat, places with sushi and asian food are actually the easiest places for me to go out to eat. They usually have gluten free soy sauce, and most everything else is safe. When the waitress came to take my friends' and I's order, I told her I was allergic to wheat and had a few questions. She immediately was abrupt, and gave me this "I don't have time for this" look and attitude. my friends noticed it too, and it was very off-putting. She kept interrupting me as well. Eventually, I just ordered something that she said was safe. When I got my food, it was NOT good. It was a sashimi platter with rice, that normall would be good anywhere else. The sushi didn't taste fresh, and there was no other flavor. She gave me a bowl of what we assumed was gluten free soy sauce, but it was hard to tell, as she never came back over to check on us. I actually made eye contact with her a few times and raised my hand to flag her over, but she immediately looked the other way and kept leaving the area. I ate what I could of the meal, and then left. After all of that, I know the sauce wasn't gluten free. Rough night. Safe to say, after the not-great food, and the awful customer service, I will not be coming back here. The only reason for two stars instead of one, is that my friends said their noodle bowls were alright. Nothing to rave about, but not bad. read more

A nice new addition to our Erie restaurant scene. It has some of your staples, but then it offers something many other similar restaurants in Erie do not: Indonesian and Japanese dishes. I tried a bowl of an Indonesian street food favorite noodle soup (the name is escaping me, as I had never had it before) and it was ridiculously delicious. A rich, flavorful broth with noodles, meatballs, tofu, and more... delicious. My wife got the hibachi dinner and while not as flavorful as Chopstix, it was still good. We also were offered half off appetizers, so we tried the steamed shrimp dumplings ($2 for six mini-dumplings) and they were delicious. The service was excellent--attentive, friendly, and conversational. I really enjoyed my experience and will be back soon to try some other noodle soups. read more

I give the a 3 because Mandi seated us and her service was good to very good, food however was a 2 at best. Clear soup was luke warm, I like my soup hot. We ordered wide variety including Hibachi which the prepare in kitchen which was ok, seasoning mediocre, vegetables over cooked, rife fried or so they said. Very nice restaurant, decided to try it because it was new. We were the only ones in there but of the parking lot is empty I would not let that scare you away. They are a newer restaurant. The waitress was very very nice and knowledgeable on the food. She answered all our questions pleasantly. The decor is welcoming, very well done, and also clean. I had seaweed salad (excellent), miso soup (good), and then tried a yellowfin tuna roll, salmon roll, and a salmon hand roll. The sushi was good, definitely fresh and the rice was good sushi rice. I also tried a few bites of my daughters chicken fingers which were very good as well. I went here New Year's Day with family - so that for one tells you they are open, if you are ever looking to eat out then. I had spicy yaki udon, with chicken (they evidently give you three different levels of spiciness), and then finished it with one of their desserts, the mochi ice cream (which consists of the choice of two different ice cream flavours with a dollop of frozen whipped topping). Overall, both dishes were well-made - good flavour profile, and the presentation was quite neat, particularly with the tree they drew on the ice cream platter with different flavours of syrup. The two flavours of ice cream I chose were red bean and strawberry. I wouldn't recommend the red bean flavour, as it was largely tasteless, but I think that was mainly just a matter of palate - if you like even the faintest taste or texture of beans in ice cream, I suppose you would like it. My only real gripes which resulted in the loss of one star is, very minourly, they did not give you a tea pot to use at your table if you ordered tea. Some Asian eateries will do this, some won't - I personally prefer that they do, out of aesthetics and the fact that the tea cups are usually tiny and so it isn't the greatest thing to continually have to ask for refills from the server in absence of a tea pot on hand. Also, of greater concern is that the menu items are overpriced. The yaki udon bowl I received was too small for the $14 price point compared to similar restaurants; I could get the same amount, same quality, at other places for $3-4 cheaper, and in some instances, I have been able to get almost twice as much as what was served here for the same price at other eateries. The same goes for the mochi (two tiny ice cream balls for $6), and I noticed a similar pricey-ness for the size with the items the rest of our table ordered. So overall, the food is good, the atmosphere is decent, nothing to complain about the service - but just know there are cheaper options as far as Asian food goes in the area. read more

Went on a Tuesday at 5:30 pm. Two tables were filled and the rest were empty. The hostess had us wait while she finished up computer work and then told us the only thing available without a reservation was outside. Since we are from out of town we had no clue we should make a reservation especially since it was practically empty. We were torn between Samurai Kitchen and the Ugly Tuna so we left and went to Ugly Tuna. Had great service and meal there. A simple explanation of the situation and apology for the inconvenience would have gone a long way with us as out of town guests. Instead, we were treated like we were the inconvenience. If we weren't treated so rudely we would have happily sat on the patio. As a business owner myself, I hope that this is a learning opportunity as how to treat future guests. read more

We both ordered the miso soup & 3 different sushi rolls. The portion size was very nice & all 3 rolls were absolutely delicious! After we ordered we saw a place card on the table that said " Raman night". Had we been told before we placed our order we may have shared that as a dish. Now that we know , perhaps another time. Sigh. The husband and I are arrived here at peak dinner time on Saturday, so I expected a bit of a cluster. I made a reservation, there were plenty of open seats...it all seemed good. But, why, oh WHY would you have loud live music at decibel 11 in a tiny little sushi place? I couldn't even hear myself think. Also, I do not need to hear that "Wagon Wheel" song for the umpteenth time, especially not while I'm trying to enjoy my sashimi. For the love of Neptune, consider the ambiance. I've had better miso soup out of a packet. We got a sashimi plate for 20-something dollars, which is fine, but it had about six pieces of fish on it. I get it, fish is expensive, I don't care if it's great, but that was pretty ridiculous. The quality was fine, but it was far from excellent. Normally, I would have just stayed and ordered more because I will do almost anything for sushi, but the vibe was so unpleasant I couldn't get to Lavery Brewing fast enough. Ordered takeout for wife's birthday because we couldn't get a sitter. Order confirmed via email to be picked up at 5:15. Left there with food in hand at 6:05. It's not the time it took that is disappointing - it's the simple fact that they couldn't be upfront and honest as to what happened. They messed up and didn't even start making the food by the time I arrived to pick it up. Had they said this I could respect that - left and come back. Instead, they lied and kept saying it'll be right up, it'll be right up. And I find myself sitting there for 50 minutes. And this is the second time this has happened. Be better - be honest and people will understand. For the record, they offered me a gift card. I declined. I didn't order the food to get it for free - I ordered it because we enjoy your food but sadly after two times we've experience this it's just not reliable. read more
