What happened to this restaurant - bakery? We visited yesterday to celebrate my mom's 92nd birthday. We are from Chile and my mother has always enjoyed having food from our beloved country, so it was natural that we would visit San Antonio and happy occasion. As we entered, the bakery looked fine, but the woman attending seemed to have an attitude when she motion for us to go on to get seated. The dining room that had always been decorated with murals and paintings was now all bare brick walls. We sat down and waited for the rest of our party to arrive while ordering a few empanadas.. The shot came when we were presented menus, which had shrunk down to 1/3 the size and gone up at least 35 to 40% in cost.. the empanadas we ate were mediocre at best. After the rest of the party arrived, no one came to the table for at least 10 minutes at which point we decided it was not a good place to have a celebration. Chilean food is hard to come by so we take the drive out to valley stream to get it. We went to watch Chile play and overall the ambiance was great. Good food and good drinks. The service could have been better. Took forever to get the server to get back. I understand there was a game going on but every time we do come here they are always slow or no where to be found. It's been a while since I have had some genuine food from the country I was born in and was raised until I was 7 years old. For Chileans I think the closest and most intimate way we become one with our culture is through our cuisine. Which is why I had to go and had me a Churrasco, an Empanada de Pino, a salad, and the best of all a slice of Torta De Mil Hojas! The last time I had visited San Antonio Bakery was when they still had the spot in Astoria, which was a 25 minute bike ride across the Tri Boro Bridge from my neighborhood in the Upper West side. The food is still very good and always enjoy being brought back to my roots. Now, why the 3 stars. Well, sorry, I'm not sure what the Mandate is in Valley Stream but not one, and I mean not one, of the wait staff was wearing masks. I mean, we still have a Covid19 pandemic, and yes I know Long Island seems to think this pandemic thing is all a farce, but come on now man. Also no outside seating was offered, and yes inside seating was at 25% capacity. I mean if the owner sees this post, I'll ask you now: Why isn't anyone wearing masks? Porque ninguna de la gente atendiendo las mesas estaba usando mascaras? I should have asked them right then and there. Some Chileans reading this may think I'm being a snitch, but I'm just thinking what about the people that go to the restaurant whom have not been vaccinated and have a waiter taking their order maskless? I thought the ?owner or ?Manager of this bakery was arrogant and insulting. I went around to a few bakeries on Rockaway Ave to get the best cake for my aunt's 80th birthday formal celebration. At this place of business, I inquired about several cakes- asking about names and what it entails. Then my eye caught another (after asking about 3) and I inquired again, at which time the individual (a man) informed me that I should "stick with these, [the previous 3], because the taste of this [the 4th cake] is well refined" when I asked about a cake. In other words, he was saying I cannot appreciate fine taste. This he said to someone who is a world traveler. When I informed him of what I perceived from his remark, he continued with his quest to show me why I wouldn't appreciate the cake and even asked apparently to prove his point, "have you ever been to Chile?" A tiny little bakery. Clean and has friendly staff. Ordered the shrimp and cheese empanadas as the order came with 2. Light, airy, yet savory. Not heavy which surprised me but I enjoyed it. The churrasco sandwich (beef, avocado, tomato and mayo). Really good. The bread they used complimented the ingredients in the sandwich. Super good. Paid $15 for these two items but it was well worth it. I saved the other half of the sandwich for later. I came with my cousin who also got the hotdog, said it was extremely filling. Since I've left Chile, it's been near impossible to find a Chilean restaurant, but this place is is by far the best one I've had. There's been a few in NYC over the years, but this place is the top one which has survived all these years and for good reason. It is authentic Chilean food and more importantly BREAD BREAD BREAD! They offer complimentary bread to go with your meal, it is served hot with butter and pebre. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. So my Chilean best friend took me out for lunch and he's been telling me about this "authentic" chilean restaurant out in long island. He took the liberty of ordering a bunch of stuff from the menu and we were barely able to finish half of the food. +Their Pisco Sour is amazing. They served it in flute glasses and added a sugar rim to the flutes and it has a very lemony taste to it. Quite refreshing for the summertime. +Their beef empanadas are baked and not fried at all, which I love. These are the same kinds his mom used to make for me every year. Also, they have cheese and shrimp empanadas that are fried and the crust was amazing. It has so much flavor compared to any ones I've tried. +The Chilean hot dog looks messy but it's covered with deliciousness of guacamole and salsa. +Their abalones were amazing and fresh, but I'm not a fan of dipping it in mayo. +He also ordered this corn grits that had beef filings inside. It's a little more watery compared to other Chilean restaurants he's taken me to, but nonetheless really good. We used to go to this place in Woodhaven in Queens, but they have closed down. It was a very nice experience. The restaurant has a nice vibe, and is bigger inside than you would think. We started off with fried queso, which had a nice taste. We then had the ribs, along with the steak sandwich, topped with avacado, tomatoes and mayo. A delicious combination. We finished with a caramel filled layer cake which was big enough for two. Why not five stars? It was hard to get the waiters attention when some minor items such as napkins and water were needed. Since we were only one of two parties in the restaurant at the time, that was hard to understand. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience. I will be back. read more

I recommend the lunch/sandwich menu as my favorite is the shrimp and cheese empanadas, and the beef sandwich. Cheese heaven! The most amazing thing is the salsa/hot sauce. I could drink that. I always ask for some to take home. I put it on everything I order for the most amazing flavors! The main menu has some unique items (to an Italian) which I have also tried. Their fried fish plate is huge. It is light and tasty. The salmon is healthy and delicious. Everything is fresh. The bread is homemade, as well as everything else. I have been here a few times when the dining area has been packed out, and also when we are the only patrons in there. They are big on the soccer games, and karaoke and serve to a packed house. My husband and son are very picky eaters and boy o boy they loved their food. The food was flavorful. The bread they bring to the table. Omg. Soft warm and delicious. We ordered cheese empanadas, chicken stew, steak and eggs and the cazuela with chicken and beef which came with a side of Chilean salad. Omg! Loved it. We also ordered beef empanadas to go since my son is constantly eating. I have never been to Chile but a lot of the regulars who are Chilean seem to come frequently as I noticed the speak to the waiters and waitresses as if they are family. I had asked the waitress what the house hot sauce was made of. She gave me the recipe ame a to go cup filled with the heavenly goodness. Beautiful bakery and restaurant. I can only comment on the bakery part, and I must say the baked goods are extremely delicious. I first heard of this place from a friend who grew up in Chile and swears by this bakery. But I wish there were labels so I knew what I was ordering half the time. I usually get the alfajors and the caramel cake which are both extremely tasty. The alfajors here are the best I've ever had and it's an addicting taste. There is no other Chilean bakery on LI as far as I know, and this place is so amazing that it makes up for it. Definitely worth trying if you want to try something new or if you want authentic Chilean baked goods. read more

**Zero stars for discrimination and unfair treatment After requesting a table for 2, we were asked if we were Chilean. When we said no, we were brought to a small uneven table in the far corner and ignored for a considerable amount of time. We ordered "hot" tamales and, after a long wait, were brought a small portion of cold gruel inside large corn husks. We asked for the food to be heated up. The waitress seemed very angered by our request and took the food away. It was brought back about 10 minutes later still cold. We ate what we could, waited a significant amount of time, finally got the check and then left. We both felt sick soon after. This restaurant is billed as an authentic Chilean restaurant and bakery. Most of the patrons were Spanish and seemed to be treated very well. While the wait staff was attentive to other customers, we were ignored. Other customers got healthy portions of very hot food while we got cold slop. I've never had this kind of experience at a restaurant. It was clear to me from the start that we were being discriminated against. There was a very clear difference between our treatment and that of other customers. There was also a very clear difference between the quality of our food compared with other customers. I've eaten at many Spanish restaurants and I've ordered tamales many times before - it is never served as a little more than a tablespoon of cold, disgusting prison gruel. As someone who grew up in Valley Stream and as someone who has always had the utmost respect and admiration for other cultures, I am disgusted and disheartened. Here is my rating: -0 stars, but I am obliged to put 1 star, otherwise the review will not post. I live here in VS for the past 16 years, and always went to San Antonio's for their deserts. My husband and I decided to go there for an early supper. We ordered a parrilla para dos, something like BBQ for 2. Anyway, it was okay, I agree the waitress had a poor attitude, but I figured she'll notice she didn't do that well with the tip I was planning on give her. We asked for the bill, and after we got the bill, signed and inserted tip, we realized that we were charged a gratuity fee of over 20%! I immediately scratched off the tip and totaled the amount without it. To my surprise my card was charged the full amount even though I had scratched it off, they got a $40 dollar tip for my meal that cost us $40 dollars. Keep your eyes open the next time you pay your bill. I am never going back. Don't force a 20% tip for subpar service. read more

If you're a fellow Chilean this is the place to be. The completos are delicious along with the empanadas. Their menu is also filled with delicious meals such as churrasco, pollo arvejado and a bunch of other typical Chilean dishes. When seated you're given bread and sopapillas.
