Advice: don't order an American meal at a Mexican restaurant in farm towns! The second order was a breakfast burrito. Ok... crazy. A bit greasy, but the ingredients are great! So, we needed breakfast driving on the 101. I was very excited to try the San Ardo Cafe! San Ardo is a super cute town that makes me think time has forgotten it. We are admittedly not from San Ardo. The feeling was clear that we were basically not welcome when we walked into the restaurant. Actually, I've rarely had an experience where I felt less welcome. We did walk away with breakfast in our bellies. But it was $40 for three people to have 2 breakfasts and a side of pancakes, bottled water and two hot teas. The food was okay, a bit greasy, but it's a greasy spoon diner so I wasn't surprised. The bacon was great - totally worth 1 star alone, and they were open and serving food, so that's the second star. But don't expect anyone to be nice to you unless you're local. I did appreciate the clean bathrooms with amazing green toilet. read more

Well looking at the pictures of the burritos I was very excited. We went on a Monday around 12. They were short staffed and it took 1 hour from enter to finish with about 8 guests in the restaurant. We had a 4 hour drive and were not happy. Anyway the burrito looked nothing like the photo. I will say though it was very good. I got the Al Pastor and it was full flavored. The tortilla was outstanding. I would go here again but wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for it. Staff tried hard but again they were buried with to go orders. San Ardo is a town of like 500. The owner told us only the rice, beans and carnitas are cooked ahead (for obvious reasons) and that people regularly drive TWO HOURS to eat here! Basic cafe ambiance, very clean and super nice people. Apparently they're known for their super taco (an open faced taco). Definitely worth the quick jog off 101 when driving between SLO/Paso Robles and Monterey or the Bay Area! read more

The San Ardo Cafe is the only place to eat when visiting San Ardo. Literately. That said, don't let their monopoly keep you from discovering what international travelers already know. This joint's got good food. I was in there a couple of weeks ago (May 2008), and found a group of young Germans enjoying the fare. If you're looking for something fancy, forget it, but if you want good food served fresh and want to see what 99% of Hwy 101 travelers miss, stop in for lunch. It's barely a mile, (if that much), off the freeway, right next to the truck repair joint and the post office. Try the tacos. Try the cheese burgers. Try the special. Leave with a smiling pie hole. Open Monday thru Saturday, 6am to 4pm. In the spring, open Sunday (asparagus picking season). read more

Great home made food! Not only do they have Mexican food but their menu has a little of everything and was perfect for our family of four. My toddler is on a grilled cheese kick and thankfully they made one perfect for him. I had the chicken enchilada and I'm telling you it was melt in your mouth perfection! We are definitely from out of town. Just stopped in for lunch after a long drive. Well they are cash only so there is a FYI for you. The food smelled good but we only had limited cash. So I bought two sodas that were supposed to be $2 each. After over charging me $5 and not giving me change we left. If you want to use a credit card you can pay across the street at a gas station but after being ripped off for a coupe of sodas we opted to take our business somewhere else. read more
