San Diego Electric representative helped me look for a replacement cover, and when we were unable to locate one, he gave me the contact info for another shop as well as a fabrication shop that can build one from a template. I needed a new breaker panel cover and was informed about this place from an associate at Home Depot, because they didn't carry any replacements other than the whole unit. It's always helpful to bring in the part that needs replacing or at least take measurements and pictures. Walked into the back where they have piles of huge random electrical parts and greeted by a gentleman with a curly mustache. He was able to immediately identify the product manufacturer and dropped lots of knowledge about it haha. Unfortunately they didn't have the whole panel but I was given a new locking mechanism, which is really what I needed, and he hooked me up with a few screws. This place was amazing. We had gone to home depot looking for knobs for our bathroom. They did no have them. We even went to some light fixture places near Morena Blvd. & it was a no go. The Internet, Lowe's, and Home Depot all failed to provide me with the replacement electronic ballast that I needed for my bathroom lighting fixture. Lowe's and Home Depot, however, both referred me to San Diego Electric. I tried going on a Saturday only to find out that they are closed over the weekend. I came back on Monday and had a unique retail experience. This is a store that seems to have been extracted from an earlier age, and I mean that in the best possible way. The products are mostly arranged in cardboard display boxes on the shelves and, unless you know where to look, I think that it would be pretty challenging to find anything on your own. Fortunately the staff (elderly folks running a family business) were quickly able to dig up an exact replacement for the electronic ballast that I needed. They even tested the new ballast (putting in a spare light bulb and hooking it up to an electricity supply with alligator clips) and my old ballast (to make sure that it really didn't work). To my shock, the price they gave me on the ballast was lower than any of the prices that I had been looking at for similar replacement ballasts on the Internet. Also to my amazement, they wrote up a receipt by hand and calculated the tax with a calculator. I was so floored by the fact that they actually had the exact part that I need, the low price, and the quick and helpful service that I left a tip at the register for the lady who had helped me. Great place. It's like an electrical museum with wall to wall relics, and the service is first class. I was running late and they still took care of me. Just needed some grounding wire, and didn't want to go to the big orange box store. I will support these guys more now that I know they are there. Secure parking is in back of the store. Quite possibly one of the best kept secrets in San Diego. After going to numerous electrical supply stores to find a rare 30 Amp Definite Purpose Contactor that controls my condo's outside photocell lights, I was referred to this business. Only 30 mins until closing, I quickly raced down busy Fairmount street to see if they had my part. I finally reached my destination to find rare parking in back, which saved me a good 10 mins of driving around University Ave or running down the block. A loud backdoor greeted me as I entered, along with multiple super nice older gentlemen that probably have a combined electrical/electronic knowledge that rivals my all college professor's years of schooling. This place is a Frys enthusiast's wet dream, filled to the gill with anything a weekend electrical warrior could dream of, but I only needed one thing. I patiently waited while the man who I was told could help me was finished with his customer and phone call. Well, I didn't have to wait very long because the gentleman doing no less than three tasks at the time, quickly analyzed my problem and provided the location of the part that would solve it. I quickly found the part with the help of another technician. The one thing that might have amazed me slightly more than their stellar knowledge, is there complete lack of condescension or the attitude I usually get when tradesman converse with me. At no point was I made to feel stupid or less worthy about asking questions not usual for the usual layman. Best of all, I discovered that most of the workers are military Vets, just like me, and the prices are laughably cheap. Did I mention their inventory is huge? The biggest for any electrical supply store I've seen in San Diego. Yes, go here if you are looking for a rare electrical part. They had parts in stock that were half the price they would have been to order from Georgia and wait a week, which was great, cause I needed them immediately. I was looking for a specific screw today for an electrical panel cover plate and after trying both Home Depot and Ace Hardware, I had no success. The person helping me at Ace - in Hillcrest - said I should try San Diego Electric.
