So happy that San Diego Plastics is still around. They are my go-to place for all things acrylic and plexiglass. I recently replaced the starboard side glass window which had a major crack in it. Replacing it with another piece of tempered glass would've been a huge project, removing the entire frame surround. I was quoted $1900 by a marine glass company. I ended up going to San Diego Plastics, ordering a 3/16" acrylic glass with the bronze color coating to match the rest of the windows in the salon. It was just flexible enough to pop into the frame. I asked him to hole cut a 3/4 inch finger hole for easy sliding. $75 and it looks and functions just like Glass. A few months ago I used San Diego Plastics for two aft windows that were 25 years old and had tiny cracks throughout. I took the pair in for them to use as a template and another $75 later, I had perfectly fitting sliders. If you go early enough and they aren't too backed up, they can cut while you wait. Last year, I use them to replace a cracked panel in my RV shower. It was super easy to reinstall and looks like new again. Each project I have done with them was under $100. I have always their employees to be engaging and helpful, unlike some of the other reviewers. If they can't do it same day, you can pick it up the next day. I had an excellent experience with a custom order-- Vanessa went above and beyond in researching and providing multiple options for my specific needs so that I could compare material specs and pricing. She invited me to stop by and see their scrap materials anytime which was crucial to deciding between the products. I paid $2 for generous cutoffs of polycarbonate and acrylic (priced by weight) and was able to take them home and experiment with drilling techniques and scratch tests. Since my project required 24 pieces of *exact* uniformity, I may have asked Vanessa about 10 times if she was SURE they'd be perfectly sized and each time she answered with patience, "YES! :)" I paid a very moderate price for my materials to be delivered to my workshop and this morning the business owner drove them over, navigated my very steep driveway and unloaded them onto my worktable herself. They are perfectly uniform and wrapped both sides in protective film. I did not catch the owner/driver's name but my whole experience was so easy and their service very impressive. I'm thrilled to have worked with a local, small business on this project (especially a female-owned one!) and will be back again. read more

Went in in person to get a quote on 2 pieces of acrylic plastic. Was quoted one price, then 2 days later when I tried to order the plastic, I was told it would be double what I was quoted. I even had it in writing. I was told it didn't matter what price I was quoted, "sometimes people make mistakes", the price would be the doubled price. In my business, my quote is my quote. Horrible customer service. Mean, rude, derogatory - the list goes on. And not the best price in town. For a very simple job, I was told one price and then invoiced much more. I cancelled my order. I was then charged for the good that I did not receive. It has been such a hassle to contact and speak with the company. All of my communication has been with Karen, who seems to be the head of sales. She is not a nice person and not a fair businesswoman. AND I FOUND A BETTER PRICE FOR THE GOOD THROUGH ANOTHER COMPANY. I've never contacted a place where you felt unwanted. SD Plastics makes you feel like your business is unwanted. Even over the phone. If they can't do a small job and support local San Diego business, then how do you expect they will handle large jobs? No customer service skill, no help, rude and untimely communication. I've used San Diego Plastics twice now, and have mixed feelings about the place. The first time we used them was in 2009 (yikes that was a while ago! I feel like I'm 5 years older as a write this!). We had a complicated project with a plastics application - making a piece of installation art that had two window structures in it, and needed 28 pieces of frosted Plexiglas (we got Lexan) as "panes," all with slightly different dimensions. It was certainly a job that required a lot of precision, custom cuts and close measurements. I drew up a slam-bang diagram, well-labeled, with all of the measurements on it, and when were received the pieces back, they were all neatly wrapped in paper, and labeled according to the diagram. They all fit perfectly! Shawn Michael was the one that interacted with the shop there, to drop off the schematics, and to pick up the pieces, so I have little reference for customer service and communication for the first job. I was the numbers person, and they got an "A" for precision and following directions that time. The second time we used San Diego Plastics was very recently for a project we're currently working on. I went with Shawn Michael in person to the shop to discuss the pieces, as it was a much larger job, and we needed to work with them on a quote. The customer service we received was, well... challenging. It was a busy day, and the man who helped us seemed very ruffled that he had to come out to the front desk to work with us - I guess he was more of a "back office" man, maybe some kind of manager. He tried to look us up in the computer system, as I mentioned we'd had work done before, and couldn't find us, making some quip about how other people don't log the customers correctly, but that HE does. I told him up front the dimensions of the pieces we needed, but that we weren't sure on what thickness of Plexiglas we'd need, and we had a budget to work within. We gave him the wish list, he ran the numbers, and it was almost double what our budget was, so we began to modify the request (e.g. 14 inch plex instead of 1/2 inch - the 1/2 inch was kind of overkill, but would have been nice). This process seemed excruciating for him. He was impatient, and while we ran some calculations, he went and sat back in his office, but didn't come back to check on us or let us know how to get his attention when we were ready (I didn't feel it was appropriate for me to go behind the counter and knock on his office door). He huffed and puffed a bit like the big bad wolf, and rolled his eyes like an impatient teenager. I wonder if he cracks a smile with anyone. Sure, in my best scenario, I would have come in and known exactly what I wanted, and exactly how much it cost, and just ordered it. But the point is I am NOT a plastics expert, and they are, and I actually need their help to price out the work. He didn't seem to express much interest in the project, in recommending thickness based on application, or trying to understand what it would be used for. He just seemed to try to get us to keep as much of the cost as possible so the shop could make as much money as possible, and he could stop being bothered. Another thing that I thought was odd was that I had called in advance to see if they could cut the plex at an angle, and what angles they could cut the edges at (bevels). The person I spoke with said they could cut it at pretty much any angle as long as the Plexiglas was thick enough. When I showed up, the man we were working with said that they could only cut at 45 degrees, and that in order to cut at 22.5 degrees (which is a standard angle), they would have to order a special bit, and they would have to charge us for it. I said ok, but that we would get to keep the bit, especially if we were paying $50+ for it (and it could be useful in our workshop). When it all was settled, they didn't charge us for the bit, and they kept it, which was fine with me, but just shows inconsistent policy and lack of communication with their customers. In addition to the trial of placing the order, when Shawn Michael went to pick it up, there was a huge missed communication where they had part of the order laid out, went to go get the other part from the back of the shop, thought that he had left, called me on my cell phone, I called Shawn back, and he said he was just waiting there where they had left him. It was a little stressful, and there seemed to be just a few too many moving parts than there needed to be. Bottom Line: Though this company does provide a service that I have benefited from significantly in the past, and though I have appreciated the precision that the shop workers use in executing the project, they could do with some customer service training to improve their relationship with the community, with small businesses, and with the so-so- public relations image they've developed over the years. read more

Upon my second visit here, the manager at this facility was extremely rude. I had requested a 36x24" dimension cuts from a full sheet and when I arrived only 1 sheet was there so I had them cut a full sheet (96x48") into the dimensions I had originally requested. She proceeded to roll her eyes and demanded I pay for her mistake in cutting the single piece. Completely rude and unprofessional. The rest of the staff was pleasant, I feel bad for them. Will not be coming back here. What a lost opportunity for them as I have a thriving small business. Not to mention the facility is located in a sketchy area. read more

Called eplastics and was quoted $227 plus tax for a 28x54 sheet of 1/4 inch acrylic in clear...this put my daughter out of budget for the hamster cage we are building for her. I decided to call around and got the same sheet from San Diego Plastics for $105!!! No imperfections, just straightforward honest transaction. I would give 5 stars except for the fact that I paid upfront over the phone so it would be ready when we got there (they (Luis) said within an hour). We arrived 2 hours later and had to wait for about 15 minutes while they tried to (and couldn't )find the piece and ended up cutting it while we waited, which, only took a couple minutes. San Diego Plastics is AMAZING! I heard of this place through an interior design instructor at school. I happened to need some clear squares of plastic to build my model and went to check this place out. The thing that really delighted me were the entrance signs; normally going to a place like this makes me a little nervous because I never know where the entrance is, and I wander around feeling like such a dork. But the entrance was clearly marked here, parking along the street, and an actual person behind the counter. Usually I have to search for someone to help me, but Karen was so super helpful. She pointed out the bins I could rummage through for only a dollar a pound. It was so exciting to legally bin dive and find what I needed. When she rang up my total I felt like I was stealing--it was so cheap. Overall it was such a smooth ride, I totally will come back again. read more

We would go to San Diego plastics to get materials for the Architecture School all the time, there is always some kind of drama. We always got suckered into going here because of the rummage bin and close location to downtown. If you get the lady at the front desk, lucky you. If you get the guido latino male....poor you. This guy is rude, I mean obnoxiously rude and mega unhelpful. We got a quote on acrylic panels $120 a piece. Two weeks later "the manufacturer had increased the cost by %8 and we had to pay for shipping to their location $68 a piece" The price virtually doubled! Unbelievable. I guess service is not part of their mission. I submitted an online inquiry regarding materials for a prototype two weeks a ago. No response. Since then, I left three messages with no reply. Today, I managed to get off of work early enough (4pm on Wednesday )to call one more time. Finally someone answered. I let her know in a calm and lighthearted manner about the three calls and online inquiry, and let her know that I am grateful someone answered. No apology, no "let me get you to someone who can help you now". Just, "Ok, hang on so I can find someone to help". I held for over 4 minutes before finally hanging up. This is a shame, because it is a local company & it would have been quite convenient to do business with them. At this point, they would really have to earn it. I know this is a random review for me, but my mom has one of those overhead lights in her condo, and instead of being the standard 24" x 48" it's more like 24.5" x 48.5" - we were in and out and it was quickly done. A few years later when one fell out and broke (because a repairman pulled it out and didn't put it back in correctly so it fell out!) we got a new one cut. :) Glad I remembered the place! read more

What a wonderful place to make a purchase! I have an outside cabinet with plywood doors that delaminated in December's rain, and I wanted to replace those doors with something that would not be bothered by rain or termites. I visited San Diego Plastics to see what Marine Board looks and feels like. I liked what I saw, and gave my list of door sizes to Karen. She wrote up my order and then walked the order over to a saw table. I asked when I should come back to pick up my doors, and she advised having a cup of coffee and waiting. In less than a half hour after I walked in, I was driving home with my new doors in my trunk. read more

Delays delays delays. Working with Daniel, the sales person, has been stressful because he does not appreciate timeliness of an order. For 80% of conversations that required follow-up, it was me who initiated the contact. At least he took my calls, thus 2 instead of 1 star. I gave him the benefit of the doubt repeatedly, and told his boss that he was too overworked. Thought a call to the boss would help. He was hardly apologetic.
