I needed a smog check so I came to Yelp and found this place. Yelp said they have a $30 deal so I called in and make sure they still had the deal going on. I told them what my car model is and they told me not get the Yelp deal and just go to them straight. I went to the shop and there was an Asian man working there and said the Smog Test is $30 but the Certificate to send to the DMV is another $8.25. I was not aware the $8.25 so I was like its fine. While he was preforming the Smog Test, I went and chat with other customers and see how much they are getting charged and found out another lady is paying around $68 for a Smog Test + Certificate which I found surprisingly high as our car model is similar. My conclusion is if this is your first time doing a Smog test for your car, I suggest you compare prices with a few other shop as I believe the price is definitely negotiable so you do not get ripped off. I also have to mention when I paid for my Smog Test, the Asian man who was working there told me not to share my quote price with other people. I believe this is because they can't rip them off for people who have never done a Smog Test before. Overall, I got in and out in about 20 minutes. Convenient location close to Costco, fast (about 20 minutes), courteous, and professional service. I drove in without an appointment on a Thursday at around 10 am and there was just one car ahead of me that was already about halfway done. As others have written, the DMV registration services on site are also helpful. There's a fee, but it saves on time, and beats any DMV office hassle. If you have an older car and it's otherwise maintained, have it serviced a few weeks ahead of the test and then drive it often. Make sure that it's fully warmed up right before the test. (I ran an errand that required driving the car for about 20 minutes before heading to this location.) Read the fine print on any coupons if you have an older car, as such vehicles nearly always cost more to test. read more

Pros: The service was quick. It was literally less than 10 minutes from when I parked to when I left. The staff was friendly and the owner was helpful. Cons: In my opinion, this place is overpriced and it's not clear how much it costs to do a standard Smog Test. You can try negotiate down but if you don't like negotiations, this is a bad experience. For me, I felt the overpricing outweighed the efficiency and the owners push for a review and explicitly requesting not to publish their rates on Yelp was a strong con for me, hence the 2 stars. I had a wonderful experience today getting a smog check. I was in and out in 15 minutes and the customer service was exceptional. I called and spoke with a gentleman named Jim who quoted me a great price. Took the truck in and was pleased with the quality of work and customer service. These guys are great at what they do and Jim, John, and Vik are there to help. If the DMV is coming after you with "Smog required" on your registration these are the guys to see. I needed to get my car smog tested and the deadline was about 3 days away. I checked on YELP and found out this place was highly recommended. This spot is a bit tricky to find because it is behind(off to the side of) the San Leandro Costco. Anyway, I pulled up, walked inside and John told me he had 1 car ahead of me and it would be 15 minutes. Maybe 5 - 10 minutes later John says he's ready, takes my keys, hands me some paperwork(4-5 lines) to fill out and he's off to the races. He knocks out my smog test inn what seemed like 5 minutes. He was so fast I thought my car failed and he was bringing it back because there was nothing he could do! This place is sparse: no bells or whistles or anything upscale. But the convenience is not the only reason why I give this business all 5 stars. Its the person behind the business, John. This man is just fantastic. He was very courteous, kind, and just nice. He made my day! He encouraged my friend to take as long as she needed at COSTCO, and after we were done 20 minutes later the car was ready. John is a one-man operation when I went into for a smog check. It's a small little shop nestled with other repair shops in the area by Costco. I was astonished how quickly the test went. I haven't done a lot of pricing, but based on the reviews the price was reasonable ($69 + $9 certification). I enjoy the convenience factor and the speed of the test. Just be aware of the no-frills waiting room. It's pretty bare-boned, but who really is concerned about stuff like that. Worst fracking service EVER!!!! Seriously folks, if you value your time, $$$, sanity, and or your dignity DO NOT come here to have your vehicle smogged. I don't care how good a deal it initially appears to be on Groupon. I came down here drawn by the appealing deal they had advertised on Groupon for a test only smog check for $35... What could possibly go wrong for a smog check at such a reasonable price you might ask; let me list the ways. 1) I finally remember to call down 24 hrs in advance to make an appointment as the coupon clearly states is policy only to be told "oh, no just drop on by, no appointment necessary". This wouldn't typically annoy me, but I could have handled this several days sooner had I known this. 2) on arrival I discover that there's an additional $30 dollar fee because it's an older truck....well shucks. 2a) the guy then tells me, "next time don't get Groupon I give you same price without it"....something about my experience tells me that's highly unlikely. 3) SMOG test takes nearly an hour despite fact that I'm only person there. Once test is complete technician tells me I failed and my "timing was waaaay off" and to get that repaired and come back to re-smog it for the everyday low price of $20 dollars more plus the $8.95 certificate - man this is really starting to add up. hmm.... odd... I've never had an issue before and even though it's an older truck, it has less than 65,000 miles on it and I've never had any issues with it passing smog or anything else prior to this, but ok I'll play along despite the fact that did I mention this is really starting to add up at this point? 4) I take my truck in to Jame's Auto and Truck in San Leandro (I'd highly recommend) and find out the degree to which they said my timing was off, I'd be noticing some major problems...I haven't Mechanic asks if I watched the guy do the test, and saw him plug everything in like he was supposed to, I didn't... mechanic says to leave truck with him and he'll give it a look, but he thinks most likely it was a bad read. 5) Sure enough, I get my truck back only to find out there is absolutely nothing wrong with my truck's timing. Nothing. It's dead nuts what it's supposed to be. The mechanic was kind enough to walk me through everything the smog person was supposed to do to get the correct reading, even going so far as to point out the instructions clearly printed on the front of my engine, all the while being kind enough not to explicitly state what a dumbass the technician was... bless his heart. 6) That set me back another $35 dollars. Now it gets REAL interesting Service so bad I had to write this review in 2 parts...to be continued... Called here to check out their smog prices. The manager on the line asked me how I found out about them. I told the manager who answered the phone that I found them on yelp. He gave me a price of $80 bucks. Ridiculous, since many of the other places I called were $50. So I was about to hang up when he asked if I was going to bring my car and I said no because they were to expensive. So he said he will do the smog check for $50 bucks. Really?! Drove up around 10:00am this past Saturday...John Nguyen the owner immediately came out, I explained I needed a smog (did not have my DMV renewal form) he said no problem as smog test is sent electronically. Also mentioned that I found him on YELP with a few great recommendations his eyes lit up - explained that I would go shopping at Costco he said no problem he would be done in 20-25 minutes. Returned after an hour (walked my Costco cart over) he insisted on returning it for me. Smog was $69.95 + $10.05 for fees - Total $80.00. A bit pricey but he was so nice and thorough would patronize again. The one tricky thing...the shop is behind the Burger King in San Leandro and being the directionally dysfunctional driver that I am had a difficult time entering and exiting the business. Ended up in BK parking lot. Once I figured it out it was ok. read more

I've taken two different cars here to get smogged with a Groupon. The reason why I'm giving one star is because I believe this place writes any price they want for a smog. When I first took my husband car in, I had purchased a groupon and had to pay $8 for the certificate as stated. They were fast, efficient, and pretty awesome. Second time, I took my own car to get smogged with the same deal but they charged me $10. I was extremely confused because the fine print still stated I had to be $8 for the certificate and was expecting the same experience I got few weeks prior. When asked about it, the guy simply stated "This is how I do it and was told to do it". Not a very good reason. Ok fine, don't want to argue about it. Take my money so I can never come back here. Even though, it's a $2 difference, it's the principal of being honest and this is NOT the place. read more
