Perfect setting, perfect service, perfect food. I cannot wait to go back! I was visiting my brother for a long weekend of work/fun in the Albuquerque area. He lives northeast of the city in Sandia Park, and when I found I would be free on Sunday, he immediately made plans for us to have brunch at San Marcos Cafe. What a wonderful morning! We made the beautiful drive mid-morning, and enjoyed the view of the snow in the high desert and on the mountains. We drove through Madrid and on to San Marcos. My brother was worried we would have a wait, but we got a table in about 10 minutes. The hostess told us to walk around and see the birds while we waited, and we LOVED the beautiful peacocks and the white peacocks, turkeys, roosters and chickens. The time of year (March) wasn't great for their whole outdoor area; my sister-in-law says it is much more beautiful and interesting as the weather warms. We were seated at a charming table in the main dining area (as you walk in). My SIL says that the room with the fire place is very lovely and cozy (if you reserve, maybe you'll want to ask for it). Right away, the waitress asked me if we were having cinnamon rolls. My brother said, "Absolutely." I was glad he did. They are a specialty of the house, which I would not have selected on my own, but they were amazing. Large, buttery, and delicious! I enjoyed one with my coffee while I considered the menu. It's not extensive, but it has offerings that are diverse. I almost went for the cheese blintzes (they are a weakness of mine), but I got up and looked at the specials board and decided I should choose the Eggs San Marcos, scrambled eggs wrapped in a just-crispy-enough tortilla with beans and guacamole. It was EXCELLENT! I was so glad I went with a strength of the house! My brother ordered the eggs Benedict, and my SIL got the chicken enchilada, which she absolutely raves about. RAVES. She says, and I agree after a taste, that their chicken tastes like nothing else. Very tender, perfectly seasoned, maybe even a little smokey. It's a popular place for the locals. It's a feed store/cafe. They have American, New Mexico and European food. The hours are 9-2pm. When you pull up, you feel like you are going to brunch at a friend's ranch. It looks like a residence with peacocks and turkeys roaming around. The interior has a similar feel with an eclectic vintage decor, wooden walls and fireplace. We went for breakfast so we got chai, coffee and their famous European cinnamon buns. It was heavenly. First visit this morning for Sunday breakfast. I thoroughly enjoyed the special - New Mexican crepe. Had with red Chile. The Chile was rich dark red with complex flavors. Excellent. The service could have been a tad more attentive but this was a very minor issue. There was a nice fire going in the raised kiva fireplace and also a very warm stove. Very homey. My husband and I are in Santa Fe for Memorial Day weekend. We took our tandem bicycle on the "Prison Loop" ride today. The San Marcos Cafe appeared at lunch time. How lucky were we? This lovely, cozy cafe not offers outstanding breakfst, brunch, and lunch but it sure was nice to enjoy the beautiful peacocks and baby chicks just outside our window during lunch. We went there on Sunday afternoon for lunch. Cool atmosphere in an old adobe, soothing music, very quaint. I had the San Marcos burrito. It was good, except the chile was more of a gravy. My husband had the feed store burrito. I didn't eat any but he said it was good. The only reason they lost a star was their chile/gravy. read more

My husband and I first discovered this charming cafe when we were traveling to Santa Fe to look for a house to retire in. We liked the rustic look and since we were hungry, we stepped inside to give it a try. A cozy fire was burning in one room and a wood burning stove in the other. My husband ordered machaca and eggs and I had their traditional bacon and egg breakfast, both meals were great. We liked the place so much, in fact, that It's become our go-to place for breakfast, especially when entertaining house guests. It adjoins a feed store, and has lots of peacocks roaming around outside, which adds to the charm. They are known for their homemade cinnamon rolls, which are out of this world and not overly sweet. We usually order one right away to split and then look over the menu to order the rest of our breakfast. I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind cafe. read more

This place was great! It's off the beaten path but totally worth the cruise. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros Christmas style; the red chili had a nice kick and it's hard to beat the authentic flavor of the hatch green chili. The green chili stew had big chunks of tender beef slow cooked to perfection in a savory and spicy gravy. The quiche was flavorful, delicate with a fantastic flaky crust. Disappointed after reading all the reviews, on Yelp and at news outlets, about the cinnamon roll. Finally made the trip to get one of these delectable creations and was totally underwhelmed. Not light and yeasty, cold inside, had been microwaved to attempt to make it warm and tender, but it ended up just being tough. Better orange juice at my house. Wonderful place. A little bit outside of Santa Fe, San Marcos Cafe is like an oasis. Surrounded by peacocks, chickens, turkeys and other animals. It's like being invited to someone's house and farm. Very cosy cafe, the original room, and the newer edition of the building, a sunroom with the view of the peacocks and the back. It's a cute place in the country, attached to a feed store and solar powered. Great food, environment and service. The cinnamon buns are very good, to die for. The coffee is also very good and continuously flowing, into my San Marcos cup. The red chile is very flavorful and the perfect heat. And, the cherry on top is when the fireplaces are going. We visited the San Marcos Cafe 15 years ago at the advice of a friend and a giidebook we picked up. We enjoyed it so much we took the long scenic route when we changed locations from Albuquerque to Santa Fe during o ir vacation. The only change we noted is the small gift shop had been replaced with more seating. Given the popularity of yesterday's visit the expansion was well deserved. My husband had the farm burrito (plus added egg) christmas style while I had the corned beef hash. We shared each other's entree and I have to say that I would rather had just eaten all of that burrito myself (it was that good). Service was prompt, coffee was refilled without having to ask and yes we did get one of those fantastic cinnamon rolls to go! Sadly several tables were unoccupied during our entire meal "due to reservations" which could've been utilized more appropriately with parties being sat, fed, and turned over as they were still unoccupied when we left. Customers did leave when they could not be seated. I see it as lost opportunity for more revenue. However if I lived in the area I most likely be one who had a standing reservation myself. It is that good! I only hope it will still be open when we return for our next vacation to the area in a few years. read more

You might occasionally see pronghorn antelope on the plains before getting to the Cafe. Tasty huecos rancheros Christmas style with beans and papas is my favorite. I'd driven past every time I took the Turquoise Trail (Route 14) to/from Santa Fe; finally stopped in. The parking lot always has cars in it -- a good sign it's popular. What a terrific cafe! An ancient home converted into a 2 room eatery. Open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch only. Smallish menu, but what they do they do very well. Menu skews towards Mexican but there are other choices. Since I came in after noon I got a hamburger and it was maybe the best I've had in New Mexico. The best part was the conversation. I came in with my book but never cracked it. I found myself joining in conversations from every table and that was completely acceptable! There was a longtime local who runs a horse sanctuary, a couple ladies from Park Avenue in New York, and others. And then there was the waitress who stuck her hand out to get my name, then treated me like a new old friend -- I feel like we'll pick up just where we left off next time I'm in. This place was recommended to us so we thought we'd give a shot. It's so quaint and rustic, a little off the beaten track but worth the drive. The staff are wonderful, on the ball, warm and friendly. You feel like you have just walked into someone's house out on the ranch. The menu is extensive with something for everyone and after perusing it we gave to 'Ready' look and the waitress appeared straight away. First up she asked if we'd like one of their complimentary home made straight out of the oven cinnamon buns. Of course we said yes...lol. This was worth the drive itself. So after deciding what I wanted of course I ask her what's popular and of course I changed to one of her recommendations. I had the Feedstore Breakfast Burrito with a fried egg and Peter had the Red Chili Stew. The burrito was fabulous, egg cooked perfect. It was so yummy. Peter's no lightweight with spicy food but it was even too spicy hot for him. I think he used the word Napalm to describe it...lol. The waitress could tell he was struggling and asked if he would like something else so he ordered a 3 egg omelette with some green chili on the side. He said it was perfect and the green chili was perfect as well. As we were leaving we noticed the peacocks in their eclectic garden. We enjoyed this remote spot on the Turquoise Trail. When we pulled in I nearly ran over one of the enormous peacocks patrolling the grounds, so be careful. Cute setting, a little dark in the main dining area, but the porch is brighter. Service was friendly and efficient. Huevos Rancheros and San Marcos breakfast burrito stood up to any Santa Fe establishment. Cinnamon rolls was moist and warm in the middle, a little crusty on the outside. I brought my family here for a bit of lunch before they got on the road back to Las Cruces (I'm a local). Normally I think San Marcos café is a nice local place for breakfast or lunch. Unfortunately, the woman who is playing host today was dismissive and almost rude to my party of only four. When we finally were seated, service after that was fine. But I noticed this woman who played the host Asked all the tables around us how they were doing. She specifically looked away from us as she walked from table to table. On service in general there are a lot of reasons why someone could be overlooked at a restaurant, but It did catch my eye that the tables this woman catered to were all white patrons. This is a cute place to visit with all the animals running around outside but I would just order the cinnamon roll and coffee and not expect good service. I ordered a quesadilla and I don't think they know how to cook it or even cooked it at all. A quesadilla is supposed to be fried/grilled to a golden brown on both sides. This wasn't. It was like they put a flour tortilla on a plate, slopped on some beans, cheese, green chili, added another flour tortilla and cut it up and served raw. Terrible! And the service the waitress was so rude. I asked for a box so I could take the tortilla home and cook it and she brought me a teeny tiny box. When I asked her politely for a bigger box, she rolled her eyes. This was seen by many at the table. The waitress was curt and not very pleasant and this is my second time at this place where I and my friends were treated rudely. What's up with that! A fun restaurant, set in a working ranch. The food is fabulous, and we were entertained throughout our meal watching peacocks strut their stuff outside the windows. The restaurant is rustic, and reminds you of an old style roadside cafe. But don't be fooled by the "rustic" - I found the food to be absolutely fantastic, the cook is a 1st class chef. Fun & Tasty San Marcos Café was hopping at brunch time on a Sunday morning when we stopped in. They were able to squeeze us in, which was appreciated. There was a fun and festive buzz about the place. We had a nice, late breakfast and everything was real good. We enjoyed their famous cinnamon rolls which are more like croissant batter rolled up and stuffed inside a muffin wrapper. I liked the peacock more than the food. Ordered their breakfast burrito. The beans were way below average...tasteless. I asked for red chile on mine, I couldn't taste/see ANY on there at all. The burrito had very little flavor and was extremely average. Nice ambiance inside the place, but I won't be back...except maybe to look for some peacock feathers outside.
