The Rhythm Lounge is a new monthly swing dance on the 2nd Saturday of each month in Redwood City…read moreorganized by the same folk who bring you the fun Swing Central dance on Tuesdays. http://www.yelp.com/biz/swing-central-redwood-city I expect this event to be just as successful and enjoyable as Swing Central. The teachers and the DJs should all be good. The Imperial Ballroom is not far from Foresters Hall, the Swing Central location, and a great dance floor. The grand opening was Saturday, 12 January 2008 and very well attended. I highly recommend checking out The Rhythm Lounge. It looks like a typical schedule will be: 8pm - 9pm - Beginner Swing Lessons 8pm - 9pm - Intermediate Swing Lessons 9pm - midnight - Open Social Dancing Check the website for the actual schedule.

I made it for the first time last night, and will certainly be making it a new part of my dance habit... (The next ones are June 13 and July 4, I think.) This month there was an intermediate class at 7 and beginner class at 8; the teachers were helpful and engaging, and found a good balance between fun and challenging for classes with a pretty wide range of skill levels. Social dancing was from 9 to midnight. The DJ, one of my favorites from Swing Central, played a great mix -- he always seems to do a good job paying attention to the energy of the room and varying the mood and tempo accordingly, keeping people happily dancing for the whole night. They're at a new venue in Burlingame starting this spring, which is a nice space for dancing. The dance floor is smooth and feels spacious although it's not huge; it stayed pretty busy for most of the dance, but in a way that mostly felt intimate rather than crowded. There's a kitchen area off to one side, with water and some snacks, and a kind of lobby area near the entrance that was good for cooling off and chatting. Unlike some other dances, where the really good dancers tend to keep to themselves in one corner, here people were doing a lot of mingling, even more so than at Swing Central. I'm pretty shy, but got asked to dance several times, and found many people approachable enough to do some asking myself.

This area has always been my struggle throughout life and has even caused huge roadblocks in my personal career. Now or Never. It was time that I was proactive about it. I heard through a birdie about International Toastmasters and how it's a group of community members that are striving for the same thing, growth! I was very hesitant and nervous when I showed up to my first meeting as there were strangers in the room. It was pleasant for the club to also provide food and drinks. With about a few minutes to spare before the meeting, I was greeted by other members. They were friendly and inviting. I was impressed by how the structure of the meeting was set up as a nice printed out itinerary was on the table. The times and activity were listed with the meeting being right on time. As it was my very first Toastmaster type of meeting, it was intimidating as I didn't know what to expect and whether or not I'd be called upon to speak. Nevertheless, they were welcoming to first timers. The meeting lasted for an hour and it was the most enriching and worthwhile hour of my life. I got to experience listening to other speakers that also struggle with public speaking. I felt empowered and ready to take control of my life. Fast forward to 3 months, I am now an active member of the club while making great friends from new to old members. I have also seen growth in my personal confidence as I continue to practice public speaking. In addition to just public speaking, I have developed great interpersonal skills that mold me into a better leader. It's amazing that in just a few months, you not only see yourself, but others around you grow into their better selves. This club is great as it is fairly cozy and intimate which provides many opportunities for growth. But wait, the best part is that this is located right across from the New England Lobster Market. WHAT?!?! Yeah, it's just one of the few motivators to get you coming :)

Plus, they know how to entice members to swing by during rush hour for a pit stop with free food and an hour of awe inspiring speeches, impromptu speaking, and evaluations! If you're in the area, check them out on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 6:30 - 7:30pm for a supportive, fun learning environment to become a more effective communicator and leader. Arrive by 6pm to meet new friends over dinner (e.g., sushi, pizza, Chinese food). Even if you're not a Toastmaster, you can practice impromptu speaking during Table Topics, which is useful for elevator pitches, interview responses, and networking. The club is also creative in nurturing relationships with local clubs and others in different time zones. Ask them about joint and/or virtual meetings using video conference calls. These options help members continue their professional development remotely as well as clubs to adopt best practices and raise the bar for broadening their members' perspectives on how far they can grow!

I've had several pickups this past year- when they arrive they are friendly and super reliable too. My only suggestion would be perhaps training on customer service over the phone? I'd say majority of the times I've called to schedule a donation pickup, the same woman has answered or returned my call. I guess I expected more warmth, welcome or professionalism from a representative of such an incredible non-profit. She just sounds irritated to take these calls or answer any questions. I chalked it up to her having a bad day or being really busy in the past, but unfortunately she was pretty cold and rude this morning. If you are considering donating here, do it! Their cause is amazing. Just manage your expectations when you call since you might speak to someone who doesn't sound thrilled lol. I'm sure the recipients of your donations will be absolutely thrilled and grateful :)
