After registering online providing my details, I made an initial visit. Despite of the enrollment details, I was greeted with as a complete stranger asking me to fill in the registration again! Dr. Zahedi started X-ray then CTI without my consent. After the scan he could not say what's wrong with the state of my teeth, then referred me to a dentist in San Francisco, but insisted me to pay for $250 and sign on a treatment plan as a receipt. This treatment plan was supposed to be presented to me before he conducted the work to show I would agree to his work. I was conned. Reported to the insurance grievance, Dental Board of CA, BBB, etc, but these ended in vain. I would not recommend this dentist. read more

My daughter recently turned 18 years old and just went to her routine teeth cleaning appointment all by herself, as a new patient. San Rafael Dentistry took advantage of her young age and, without explaining, performed a procedure that she never asked for to collect a hefty copay. Her dentist shot her with at least 10 Novocaine shots (could be more) in a short half-hour session to the point where she was crying and cringing. She was injected for each tooth individually. It's well known that using too much Novocaine, or any anesthetic, can lead to negative health effects. The dose was completely inappropriate for regular dental cleaning which caused suspicion. They only cleaned half of her mouth and charged a $110 copay, which seemed high. She was told that it would be another $110 to clean the other half. As soon as she walked out of the office, she called and shared about her experience. I immediately called the doctor and was told it's what they normally do for "deep cleaning". When I notified the dentist that she couldn't feel her whole face, including her chin and her nose and was in major discomfort, the doctor responded that now you know that it's how it's done here. No apology, sympathy or explanation followed. I called the Delta Care USA insurance company immediately after hanging up, and learned that regular teeth cleaning should have had a zero copay! A deeper cleaning should have been $25-$30 the most per her insurance representative. $110 copay would only have been due for a procedure called "scaling and root planing" per the representative, which was only recommended when a standard dental cleaning is not enough to remove plaque and tartar buildup which she didn't have. She didn't have a single cavity either. When I asked the dentist how they determined that my daughter needed "deep cleaning," and if her teeth were in really bad shape - the doctor confirmed that her teeth were not in bad shape. He never revealed the procedure actually performed on my daughter, unbeknownst to her. I am now concerned about her teeth/gums as there was a lot of drilling going on too and we don't know why. I made an appointment for her to see another dentist. Beware of this unethical & dishonest practice. read more

Avoid this dental office at all costs. My experience here was awful from the start - they never answer the phone, and I had to leave multiple voicemails and emails just to confirm my appointment. When I finally arrived, Dr. Zahedi was shockingly rude and unprofessional, yelling at me simply for explaining why I was there and what I would like to be done. I'm giving two stars, not for the professionalism and competency of Dr. Zahedi, who went to Boston University dental school, as he was pleasant enough and seemed quite knowledgeable about his craft. My visit was as a first-time Kaiser Delta care patient, as I'm new to the area and need to connect with a dentist. The two stars are mainly for the office, and after getting a "plan" for dental care, I was asked to pay upfront! The plan was for thousands of dollars, and I've never been asked to pay upfront, even before the scheduled appointment. There is a review of this office with the same surprising and questionable practice of the emphasis on money. Other reviews also comment on the clear and unabashed motive of getting money out of the patient. At least, that's what it seemed to me. As for the office, it could be a more modern look and feel. As an adult I have never had a bad experience at the dentist. As a kid, sure, but nothing ever legitimate. My last visit to a dentist was in 2016 before I lost my dental coverage. Now that I have insurance again, I decided it was about time to go for an exam. My old dentist Signature Smiles (LOVE THEM!!) unfortunately does not accept my new insurance which is why I ended up at this disgraceful establishment called San Rafael Dentistry. My first thought walking in was that it was awfully dark inside and looked unlike any other dental office that I had entered before. There were no actual walls for the "rooms" and there were no other patients around. I filled out the paperwork and asked to use the restroom. You can tell a lot about a business by the cleanliness of the restroom. It wasn't very clean and there were no more paper towels to dry my hands. Not the best impression but I decided to give it a chance. The wait time was long for there not being any other patients and you could hear someone talking loudly on their cellphone in the back employee area which was annoying because everything echoes in the building since it's one big open space. Finally the dental assistance called me back, had me sit on the chair and pinned the bib around my neck. She wore her face covering below the nose which was a bit upsetting. For someone who works in the medical field she should be setting an example during the COVID pandemic. Cords and wires from the machines were everywhere, chairs falling apart and tangled in the cords which took the assistant a minute to get her chair untangled. She left the "room" and told me that the doctor would be there soon. I waited for a good 10 minutes just looking around the space and noticing how dirty and cluttered it was. The floor was especially gross. I heard someone from behind me enter the space and expected the doctor but it was his assistant again who now told me that we would need to do an x-ray. Okay. No problem. I've had plenty of dental x-rays in the last 20 years. Though, my last one was not since 2016, I didn't expect much to change. ....Go to the x-ray room, wear the lead vest, bite down on the film, done.... Well... not in this strange office. She had me stay in the same chair, put the vest over my chest which I had to adjust to make sure it properly covered me, and then she held this large red plastic mouth piece connected to a cord in front of my face and told me to "open up and bite down". It looked like it was tilted on its side because there was a piece that pointed up towards where the roof of the mouth would be. I looked confused and she asked me "What, you've never had an x-ray before?" I told her "I've had many, but none like this.". Still, I gave it a chance, opened wide and bit down. It jabbed my hard palette and injured my mouth but I dealt with the discomfort until she pulled it out and I told her "Ouch that hurt." She looked at her computer for a minute or two then told me "I'll be right back, let me see what is going on". I thought, okay great, she's going to see what is taking the doctor so long. The talking on the cell phone stopped and I realized that it must have been the doctor who was on the phone the whole time! She brought him in and I thought he was there to see me... but no, he quickly ignored me and explained to the assistant how to properly use the x-ray machine... then instead of staying with her to make sure she did it right... I could not believe that he left her alone!! She asked me to open up again... I was reluctant because of how much it hurt the first time but I did. ***Now here is what disturbed me more than anything else***: as I was biting down on that red plastic x-ray device, I realized that this time it had one of those disposable plastic sanitary covers on it. As she jabbed me again in the hard palette my stomach lurched just thinking about how she did not use a cover last time she put it in my mouth! ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING AND UNACCEPTABLE!!! She took the device out and as I was processing what a nightmare this experience was, she said that she had to stick it in three more times for a total of four x-rays. I started to explain to her again how much it hurt and that it was tearing up my mouth, but then decided that she did not care and none of this was worth it. I told her that I was uncomfortable and that I was leaving. When I got to my car I immediately called another dentist nearby that was listed on my new dental plan. They got me in for an appointment right away and were sympathetic to my awful experience at San Rafael Dentistry. I am so glad that I trusted my intuition and got the heck out of there. Hopefully I don't get sick from having that dirty piece of plastic in my mouth. Stay far, FAR away from San Rafael Dentistry. Go to a dental school if you have no other options. I needed a cleaning and they were on my insurance. TLDR: I didn't get them cleaned, and won't return. You have to have an in person eval first, and then return for a second appointment. The front desk and phone service is lackadaisical in the extreme. I did not get a courtesy contact reminding me about the appointment despite being told that is their typical practice. They have a longer than usual form to fill out, that uses minuscule type, in an under lit waiting area. When I asked how long the appointment would be, I was told an hour, which I probably relayed to the person picking me up. Although I was the only one waiting,the receptionist apparently couldn't remember what type of appt I had because the consult took 5 - 10 minutes. It consisted of a quick look at my non-remarkable teeth, then a vigorous attempt to upsell me on cosmetic, non-covered procedures. The receptionist then told I could get an appt in 8 weeks, after I had waited 5-6 weeks for the initial appt. No thank you. Overall I felt that my needs as a patient were not important to them in the least. So I moved on. read more

Over the past year, Dr. Zahedi has provided exceptional care and attention to me as a patient. Our 1st appointment was for a regular checkup (long overdue). Our 2nd appointment was to consult for root canal treatment. The appointments thereafter have been a result over issues that have required more in-depth consult as well as extensive bridge work. In the process, I have seen some very cool dental technology while getting fitted for my implant. In Yelp, some reviewers are outrageously displeased with his office walls and customer service or communication disconnect. Keep in mind that the experience of having to deal with any dentist is overwhelming, scary and often triggered by an individual already responding to terrible mouth pain or anxiety. This place is s nightmare. Like all the other reviews I've read now, this dentist was the one covered by my insurance and I HAD to go here. First off, it took two days to get ahold of them- now a call back, but get them on the phone) after leaving multiple message about a dental emergency- which I said in the message. After the second day of them not calling back, my friend decided to repeating call until someone finally answers pissed off, probably because he finally had to answer it, and he wanted to call us back. Needless to say, my friend wouldn't let them hang up until I had an appointment and the experience was TERRIBLE!!!!! When I called them to confirm the appointment, they put me "on hold" while I hear them talk about a patients medical history and decide if the patient should stop their plavix before a procedure. The worst possible patient privacy to could ask for. The door from outside is always locked, they have to buzz you in. The "patient rooms" are half walls, which you can see into the next patients room. It's the grungiest dentist I've ever been in. Gross floors and walls, the feels like your going to leave sick. After the technician took my X-ray, she just flung the coat they make you wear over the half wall, like she didn't care about anything. Who knows how they treat the rest of the equipment/ supplies. All three people: the front desk guy, the tech, and the dentist were all completely rude to me while being there. While leaving the front desk guy told my friend and I to fuck off. If I could give zero stars I would, I haven't even made it into the office yet. Calling in and I am already over the RUDE and DISPECTFUL staff in this office. Honestly it's appalling, my five year old and my three year old were assigned to this dentist - they do not see kids under the age of three, so per my dental plan, I needed SR Dentistry to refer me out to the pediatric dentist. Not sure if they don't know how or they don't want to, but the guy that answered the phone started yelling at me saying "they just need to assign you to a different dentist, it's so easy you call and tell them, we don't need to do that" etc. I couldn't get a word in if my life depended on it - and I did call my insurance, they were they ones that said SR Dentistry needed to send the referral over. I am 100% sure that any kid who walked into this dental office would beg their parents to leave. It is the most horrifying and disgusting place that I have ever been to. The only reason why I went here was to get a referral since I was forced to go here by my insurance company. Firstly the door is remains locked all times and you have to be buzzed in to get greeted by the rudest receptionist. While waiting to be seen my mother and I found two inches of dust on most flat surfaces. The assistant came up to us and asked us to sign for a whole list of unnecessary services, when they knew that I was only there for a referral. They knew this because when my mother had called multiple times before having to walk in and make an appointment because they never returned her calls and told them about the referral. We again told her that we are just here for a referral. She said okay and then left. We then were called into the "room" which was just half walls dividing the reception area and other patients. That's when everything went from a 3 star to a 1 star. Dr. Zahedi was the rudest dentist that I have ever met. He seemed to not care about how uncomfortable my 14 year old self was in his office. Even in the room there was dust everywhere and it made me think if the tools where even clean. No patient should ever have to think of that. When my mother told Dr. Zahedi that we were not going to do a cleaning and what he were actually here for he straight up told us that there was no reason for a referral and asked us what was our reason. My mom growing more annoyed said, "She's uncomfortable with these conditions." Apparently that was a triggering topic for him. He became very angry and yelled "What do you mean by conditions!?!" They started to argue and he refused to get us a referral because I am "not a child" even though I am a 14 year old. He listens carefully to my questions, my cares and concerns. He explains procedures clearly so that I understand what he is going to do and why he is going to do it. I can't say I'm thrilled with San Rafael Dentistry. I came here because they were convenient to my work and accepted my insurance, but after a 2-visit deep cleaning (I was overdue) and the resulting recommendations I won't be going back. The deep cleaning itself seemed to be done competently, which is why they're getting 2 stars instead of one. The problem is that they seem to have a penchant for extracting money from patients. The 2-visit deep cleaning cost $180 over my insurance, whereas a cleaning with my new dentist had no co-payment at all. That would have been kinda acceptable though, had they not recommended a whole bunch of fillings that I apparently didn't need. The Zahedi office recommended filling 6 cavities after I got my cleaning, and since I'm religious about brushing this seemed pretty excessive. Furthermore, there were $50-90 co-payments associated with each filling. I decided not to schedule the work 'til I went somewhere else first. My wonderful new dentist, Cristina Chavez in San Francisco (whom I'll be reviewing after my next visit or two), just gave me a cleaning and recommended filling two cavities. That's quite a drop from 6, and there is no co-payment tacked on at all unless I use a fancy material for the fillings. I made it a point not to mention San Rafael's assessment to my new dentist, just to see if there would be a difference. I had a hunch that there would be, and it was soundly confirmed. Can't say I have reason to fault the work of San Rafael Dentistry, but I definitely fault the heck out of their business practices. I'm glad I got that second opinion before I spent a bunch of cash on needless fillings. read more

Stay away at all costs. If you can even get in. Door is locked at all times. If you choose to wait until the dude at the front desk notices you, hope that they have all their supplies. I had to wait by the door to get in for my appointment, I was ten minutes early, while the front desk guy meandered over to Walgreen's for more latex gloves. Like the other review noted, they tried to sell me tooth whitening and other unnecessary work and did not seem concerned about the original reason why I was there. I never did get to see Dr. Zahedi. Here's why: I made my appointment on a Thursday for the following Monday. I confirmed that appointment on Friday and again on Monday, just an hour before I was due to arrive. I paid for my parking out front. I came in, smiled at the hygienist who didn't even look at me. Was handed my paperwork with a pen attached, not necessarily a clean one. No one at any time took my temperature. I filled out my paperwork and returned it to the gentleman at the desk. At that point, he asked me my name again, which I told him, and then he said hmmmm... you're not on our schedule. Would you mind waiting 20 to 30 minutes? Despite the bad reviews, I went here because it was 1 of 2 local dentists covered by my insurance and the other dentist had even worse reviews. I went in for my exam and filled out all of the paperwork. One question asked about any surgery in your past. I had knee surgery 15 years ago to repair a torn ACL. Zahedi asked me about this surgery and said he couldn't do any sort of dental work on me without getting the ok from the surgeon who repaired my ACL. That was 15 years ago - I was a freshman in high school! I don't have that information and even if I did, I don't think you really need it in order to clean my teeth! I've been to quite a few dentists in my time and none of them have ever requested this sort of pre-authorization for a teeth cleaning! I've had my wisdom teeth removed, root canals, cavities filled, and cleanings done multiple times...it has never been an issue. Needless to say, I ended up getting pretty upset and walked out (after getting the paperwork with my personal information back). Lucky for me, it's open enrollment time and I'm switching insurance providers just so I won't have to go back here or go to another low rated dentist covered by my plan. read more

Not a fan. I made an appointment for an exam + cleaning and the folks at the front desk told me that would be no problem and scheduled an appointment for me. I didn't find out that you need to do two separate visits (one for exam, one for cleaning) until I arrived. The office also said they'd call me to answer a question about my insurance that I think they should have already known how to answer, but never called (I eventually called them, and even then it took several days for me to hear back). The man at the front desk was dismissive at best, rude at worst. Update, 7/5/12: Dr. Zahedi, I noticed that you recently discovered your Yelp reviews and wrote responses to everyone. You seem to be pretty defensive, asking one reviewer why he left his SF dentist if they were so great and counter-insulting another reviewer, and implying that she was paid to write the review. Instead of arguing with your former clients, perhaps you should notice that you're consistently receiving 1 and 2 star reviews from multiple sources, and consider ways to improve your business practices based on their complaints. It seems like that would be a) a more professional response and b) a better use of your time. Decent and competent care. The cleanings are very aggressive. The office is disorganized. They very often don't answer the phone or return messages. This happened three times: I had an appointment, was on time or early and waited 20 minutes to be acknowledged by the receptionist Farnham. I was then told that I had to come back another day because they were too busy, had an emergency or were over-booked. This office is so disrespectful of one's time. The second time they pulled this on me they offered to waive my co-pay. Fair enough. The third time they did the same exact thing, I refused to give them the co-pay because I had to return to the office another day taking up hours of my time. Farnham was rude and argumentative and told me never to come back. I honestly don't know how people like this can stay in business. read more

No one cares about the past 6 years ago. People care about your most recent service now, which luckily for you, are all horrible. But if you want to dig deeper into the past, miraculously you went from a total of zero reviews to 5 in 2009. Two were written on the same day (11/13/09) and two were written two days apart (7/28/09 and 7/29/09). It's no wonder another reviewer questioned whether or not your friends or family wrote these "positive" reviews. One reviewer even mentioned that you bleached their teeth and gave them a prettier smile, which is funny because all your negative reviews made a complaint about your strong recommendation for this service. Nice upsell? It's pretty hilarious because even though you show improvement in your response skills, your distasteful demeanor still manages to shine through by denying that I was a patient of yours. You were never a good dentist and I hope everyone does their research from multiple sources online before selecting a dentist. It doesn't matter how hard you have worked to build your reputation. All these negative reviews speak for themselves. If you really did listen to your patient's concerns, you would reach out to every single negative review to see how you can improve your practice, not accuse them of wrongfully threatening your reputation. My mission has been accomplished because I have reached out to potential patients and stopped them from signing up with your service. I just finished up a lengthy implant procedure with Dr Zahedi. I'm not into going to the dentist and was looking for a dentist who was kind, compassionate, and most important, very good at implant surgery. Dr. Zahedi was perfect. He listened to my concerns, worked with my restricted schedule, and fully explained the implant process- the appointments involved, etc. During my procedures he repeatedly checked in to make sure I wasn't in pain and felt comfortable. Dr. Zahedi is an extremely well trained dentist from a top dental school and it shows. Since my brother is a great dentist in another state I am used to high standards. Dr. Peter Zahedi and his staff did a great job on a deep gum cleanse and my teeth have not been this white for a long time. No pain whatsoever! I was initially excited about this dentist after my sister referred me as both of us have always had pain when work was being done. And by that measure they did a great job of not putting me in any pain when filling two cavities. However, this was the end of any positive experience. After having some work completed i changed dental insurance companies. Upon returning (after having 1 appointment canceled last minute), i was told that they would have to confirm the extent of coverage with the insurance carrier since they were not familiar with the company, and that they wouldn't be able to help me that day. This is despite the fact that i was showing them on my phone that the are listed as an in network provider. Its after this that i never heard back from them again, never confirmed my coverage as they said they would. I called them 5-10 times over a few months and never got a call back or an answer on the other end of the phone. I eventually found another much better dentist, at which point i left them a message asking my x-rays be sent over. Guess what! they called my new dentist and after some teeth pulling the new dentist got the x rays. This just proved that they had been ignoring me the whole time. I suspect they didn't like my new insurance company and were avoiding me. Then, it gets even worse. My parents recommended a friend who went in and was told they need all kinds of work be completed, and immediately. They put down a $700 deposit but got a teeth cleaning before the real work was to begin. Their experience was terrible, apparently the most painful cleaning they had ever had. So they said they would be switching dentists as they didn't feel comfortable. Now the doctors office refuses to refund their deposit. Worst and most unprofessional doctors office i have ever experienced! This is really a 0 star establishment. read more

Shocking to read some of the reviews, I and my family have used Peter Zahedi for the past 15 years. I have never once had a problem with him or his very competent staff. I have enjoyed his services, as well as his staff's and will continue on using him as long as I live in Marin. Many Yelpers (people) get out of bed in some sort of FUNK (bad mood) and take it out on innocent victims, but they should be more concerned on how to find happiness in their own lives. Chill out on the phone and listen to yourself and then maybe how people treat you will have a better reflection of the energy that you are giving out! read more

Being a chronic bruxer for more than 30 years, and being especially averse to dentists/ drills, my teeth were in embarrassingly bad shape. I chose Dr. Zahedi because he was one of the few Dr.s providing services within the economical dental plan that I purchased. I was expecting second rate service and prepared to go to battle if necessary but my experience has refreshingly far exceeded my expectations. The dental work Dr. Zahedi provides is top notch and it is clear that his knowledge, experience and competence are second to none. I was not surprised when Dr. Zahedi was recently written up in the newspaper for the completion of his fellowship training. This is not a doctor that rests on his laurels and makes do. He is proactive about the newest technology and procedures available in the field. It turns out that I needed to have numerous crowns and a bridge all of which would have cost thousands of dollars. The materials used have diamond-like hardness and are impervious to even the most aggressive teeth gnashers. Dr. Zahedi is the ultimate perfectionist as several appointments went way beyond the call of duty to get the preparation and execution just right. The staff is friendly, competent and they have the easy demeanor that comes from enjoying their work. Dr. Zahedi has a calming chair-side manner and I will no longer be avoiding the dentist like a plague. Drills are drills, but the care I received in this office was exceptional. Dr Zahedi and his staff have been caring for my families teeth for several years. They are friendly and accommodating to my scheduling needs. After having bad dental experiences with 2 other marin county dentists, it was a relief to find someone who knows what they are doing and not only corrected the terrible mistakes of the past dentist but has made my teeth look fantastic. Ive read some of these reviews and I have to say in the 5+ years Ive been seeing Dr Zahedi, Ive never felt pushed into anything and have not had my teeth whitened nor has anyone in my family. Additionally, I just want to share that I do feel there is a connection with both the doctor and the staff. The receptionist is absolutely lovely and the staff is very professional. read more
