I had taken jewelry here before to have appraised and sold and had been satisfied, so I decided to use them again. I brought in about 20 pieces, mostly gold and silver rings. They called the next day saying the appraisal was finished. The woman at the counter brought me the tray of my jewelry and said that I had 14K and 14K gold plated jewelry and offered me a price. I told her that I knew a few of the pieces were above 14K, including 3 that were 24K, and she replied that the guy, who was eating his lunch, had tested them. I took out the ones I knew to be "pure", the guy looked at them, and proceeded to give me a lecture on how to recognize 24K (I had bought these pieces years ago BECAUSE they were 24K). It was obvious that he hadn't tested, or even looked at, all my jewelry and had probably assumed that everything was the usual 10 or 14K. He "re"tested those that I questioned and admitted that I was correct. This bumped up the price over $200! Bottom line: Know something about what you've got before going into any jewelry appraiser. I will not be using SR Rare Coin for any more of my appraisals/sales. read more

I called them a few times about a 1922 silver dollar that I found that I wanted to get a pricing quote on. I know that the coin was Minted and Philadelphia. However it has no other demarcations on it so I was wondering if it was worth more money, it has very rough edges and deep detail for a coin that's over 100 years old. I called multiple times to talk to them about it but only got the answering machine and it was full. However, I called another establishment and left a message on their voicemail In San Rafael, and they gave me an estimated price quote right away, but they wanted to see it! So, because this company is so inaccessible, I have to take it to a competitor and will in San Rafael. It would be much more convenient if these guys picked up their phone, they only do business by by calling and setting up a time to meet them for meet with them that being said, how can you get in touch with them if their voicemail is always full? Okay, so I found this coin - it was old (over 125 years old) and not knowing anything about numismatics, I had no idea of its worth. My first stop was a coin shop over there (let's just say across the bay), where the gal gave me a very, very low worth for my coin, was not overly friendly and not forthcoming with any information about my coin. She did not give me the feeling of someone I with which I would want to ever do business. So I visited San Rafael Rare Coin, an establishment closer to my home, smack dab in the middle of downtown San Rafael. The shop is a very neat little shop with coins everywhere and two desks where two guys sit doing I have no idea what. This time I hit the door stating I wanted an education about my coin. I told them I found it and I had no idea of its worth. So he inspected my coin told me about it, gave me an estimate a full 25% higher than the other gal across the bay's assessment and went on to give me some options: Never clean a coin, if you put it in jewelry, you will forever diminish its value, yes, there is a rating system for coins and yours is an XF. He was nice and patiently answered all my questions. I'd go to them again. I mean, if I were an actual numismatic, I'd probably plop myself down there every day, because these guys seem to be a fountain of information. So yes, recommended. I appreciate and thank them for their help and treating me with respect even though I really didn't know much about their area of expertise. read more

Prices are fair, although it is a shocking time to invest in coins because of the price for gold and silver. Very hard to deal with on the phone. I was offered the going rate but got a bad feeling while talking to him on the phone so I went some where else.(read review for Pacific Precious Metals) My father in law went in the next day and they tried to low ball him. He ended up going to Collectible Coin in Mill Valley the same day and got $500 for the same silver coins San Rafael Rare Coin offered him $300 for. You make the call! Its only second hand info but have heard alot of these stories about this shop in the last 10 years. I have never used Collectible Coin I use Pacific Precious Metals in Mill Valley but both seem like you can trust them. Good Luck. read more

I've come to this location twice and got the exact results each time. POOR SERVICE! Two guys sitting at desk struggling to even say hello. When I asked questions, I got just, No/Yes answers. No interest in selling me items or offering their knowledge of coins. I assume they are knowledgeable since they have a shop, but ignored me to the point of being rude. The two coins I asked about were cheaper on Amazon anyway, but I would have liked giving my business to a local shop. I won't be returning. read more

My mother died over 30 years ago and I have only recently (don't ask) started to look over the contents of her safe deposit box, Among the things that I found was an old Russian coin given to me by my grandmother when I was born. Anyway, it had some stuff stuck to it and I took it into SR Rare Coin to see if they could tell me anything about it. Roger not only cleaned it up, but sent it to a Russian coin specialist in SF who Roger said was THE expert in Czarist coins. It came back with a verbal report on its condition, rarity and likely value (not of interest to me as it is more of a sentimental object for me). He also gave me some additional info regarding some of the coin's possible history. Now for the best part--there was NO CHARGE and he happily returned the coin to me. I insisted that he needed something for his time and effort and he again refused. Thus, I write this review. No question, SR Coin is fair and a good, helpful place. I suspect some of the negative Yelp reviews are from competitors or folks who just want to phone shop for "best price for metal" and are not into coinage. For coins, he is the man! I arrived at San Rafael Coin to find hand sanitizer and spare masks waiting for me at the door; I appreciated their Covid efforts. I was immediately buzzed in and was greeted in a friendly, professional manner. As I discussed the coins I wanted appraised, I felt they were knowledgeable and fair. I also discovered they will appraise jewelry and other silver items. I left the coins with them for appraisal, and I got a call just 3 days later with their value, which from my own research, appeared more than fair. Here's what I liked the most about this coin store: they were willing to look at each individual coin to see not just its silver content, but its value to coin collectors. I had been to another coin store in Marin, and all they were willing to consider was the bulk silver content of the coins. Thanks but no thanks. I will not be going to this place. Ever. It might be unfair for me to review a place I haven't visited but, I think you will understand why I feel I am in a position to do so. I called on the phone to ask a few simple questions. I wanted to know how much they pay for silver, 10k gold and platinum by the oz. Just to get a rough estimate. First, the lady who answered the phone couldn't tell me anything except that she needs to know all of the questions I have to ask at once so she won't have to put me on hold more than once. She had to ask Roger. It turns out even if I had more questions to ask, she wouldn't have put me on hold more than once because Roger picked up the phone to ask me what I wanted. Obviously she didn't tell him what I had asked. So, I repeated the questions to him. In my first sentence, I was saying "I understand that with coins you can't give me an exact quote without first seeing them, but maybe you can give me a range or let me know if the coins I have, have any collectible value at all". I know, that's a really long sentence. I mean, it would've taken me about 10 seconds if he'd have given me the chance. I was about 2 words in and he cut me off to let me know that he couldn't give me an exact amount without seeing the coins first. Wow, I must be stupid. Or... no wait.... maybe he just wasn't listening. I swear, these people were acting like they were in such a hurry because they had customers lining up out the door or something. I doubt it. I drive by this place on the way to work and never seen a damn person in there. Well, basically he spent about 1 painful minute telling me that he couldn't answer my questions over the phone. Is that shady or is it just me? I called about 4 places and 2 of the 4 are in SR and they both said the same thing. I can't tell you over the phone. lol wtf? I mean, it's just like I'm calling for a happy ending or a bag of weed and you can't tell me over the phone if you do it or not. So, I will be taking my business elsewhere.
