My new favorite coffee shop. I went back a few times to try out the food items on their menu and was not disappointed. The açaí bowl had the perfect consistency. It was cold enough that it didn't melt and had a sherbet texture but not too hard where it was all ice. It was a nice tangy flavor but not too sour. However I do wish that it came with more honey and granola. EVERYONE GO GET THE WAFFLE! Usually waffles make my tongue feel kinda scratchy and I don't want to keep eating it but not this one. This waffle was crispy on the outside but super soft on the inside. It actually comes with chocolate chip and peanut butter sauce but I felt like that was too many flavors so I took them out, and it was perfect. The syrup was not too solidified that it didn't come out but not too watery that it was just water and spilled everywhere. Even after adding a generous amount of the syrup to the waffle, it wasn't overtly soggy and was still delicious. It comes with bananas and strawberries which I wish were juicier but honestly not bad. Their whipped cream is super light and paired super well with the cinnamon sugar. I ordered my usual winter spice latte and it was amazing as usual. This time I also ordered an iced mocha and it was delicious and frothy. As a mocha lover I approve. This place never disappoints. Just wished it opened later so I could work there longer. read more

Good place and good coffee but the barista sighs and looks at you as if you're stupid in front of yall face when you don't know stuff and ask questions. Like how do I know if there's no name/sign indicating the ingredients and stuff? And why are you acting like asking questions is a bad thing?? I ordered the seasonal maple cinnamon latte, and it's so yummy! If you're a cinnamon lover, I would suggest this drink, thank you to the kind barista who recommended this to me when I was deciding between this and the lavender cold brew. My partner also got their turkey sandwich, and it was yummy and filling. The food and drinks are great, and the atmosphere and ambience inside is really nice. Came here on a Saturday morning for breakfast. There was a small line but it went by pretty quickly. Ordered a seasonal raspberry matcha latte with oat milk, which was not too sweet and a nice earthy taste to it. Also got a waffle with strawberries, banana, and peanut butter. Waffle was gluten free and tasted quite healthy but still good with all the fresh toppings. My friend got a drip coffee, which he said was ok but nothing special. I would recommend trying if you're looking for healthy bites and a chill space to work in. A lot of people brought their laptops and seemed to be working on their individual projects. Orders: Golden latte with almond milk: a latte with turmeric - I never thought a latte could be spicy, but it was. Supposedly v good for your digestive track! Classic latte with almond milk: can't go wrong with this order. Simple and good. Vegan breakfast sandwich with beyond sausage: definitely my favorite of the two sandwiches! Loved the texture, flavor, and the non-greasy feel. Classic breakfast sandwich with chipotle, cheddar, and add-on bacon: delicious but needed significantly more napkins for this one. Came here for an afternoon study date! It was around 1pm and the place was nearly packed. Luckily, my friends and I were able to score a table. If you're a studying and need outlets, you can find them by the seats facing the window. I ordered a golden chai latte with oat milk. I really enjoyed the kick of spice it had throughout the entire drink and not just concentrated at the bottom of the cup. It was a good throat-warmer for a cold day! Although I liked when this was a Big House Beans, I appreciate the extended hours in its new iteration. There's lots of comfortable seating, more than their downtown Oakland location, and natural lighting. The WiFi is also MUCH more reliable than at Delah Coffee in Uptown or Milyar Cafe in South Berkeley. It's a great spot for when I want to get out of the house to do some reading, studying or work. The bathroom could use more frequent cleaning, though. read more

Thankfully they have an area for seats without tables which is nice for people who are just stopping by for a quick snack/coffee break. We ordered takeout breakfast and coffees and pastries from Big House Beans today for a work offsite and it was wonderful! The variety of coffees folks could choose from (golden latte, honey lavender latte, oat milk latte, etc.) and the breakfast options (bagel with lox, acai bowl with fruit, avocado toast with fried onions on top) and the assortment of pastries (bear claw, coffee cake/muffin, cinnamon roll, sesame croissant, savory croissant with bacon, some deliciousness with flaky dough and hazelnuts in the center) - all were delicious! I walked from Temescal Works up three blocks to Big House Beans during a break and was immediately drawn to the cute space and the pictures of other items I did not get to try. I will be back to try their GF waffle with strawberries - if it's as good as everything else I tried today, yum! PS: I only later learned about their social mission to provide employment for folks who have experienced hardship in their lives. All the more reason to support Big House Beans! read more

The service was great! Definitely a nice spot to study at all day. I ordered an adeni chai and loved it. It was very strong and not too sweet. I also got a turkey pesto panini that was well-toasted and very cheesy, but lacking on the pesto sauce. The seating wasn't the most comfortable. The tables by the sofas are too low to study at and the wood stools by the large table at the front are not comfortable to sit in after an hour or two. But otherwise, great experience. I love the interior design of this coffee shop! It's super cute and vibrant and spacious. There's a lot of people working or studying here so it seems like a good place to be productive! Parking is pretty easy around. There's lots of restaurants nearby if you want to grab a bite and coffee afterwards. The pricing isn't bad for the drinks but it adds up if you want to add syrups or change the type of milk. It can get pretty pricey for a single drink. I ordered the golden latte and it was really good! I wanted to try something new and that drink caught my eye. The turmeric in the coffee gives it a little extra kick and flavor. A very cozy and relaxed feel. The music wasn't the typical coffee house jazz or lo-fi music; during the visit, it was a mixture of hip hop or R&B. We got two drinks: one is a latte and the other is a golden chai latte, since we never seen this type of drink in other places. We picked a seat near the end of the cafe, where it is blocked off. There are some guests working on something with their laptops, some were sitting along the window bar seating area. Our order was called, so we walked over and carefully took it back to our seats. The latte is perfect. One of my relatives, who prefers their coffee piping hot, mentioned that it is a tad lukewarm, but other than that they loved the flavor. It was a good balance of milk and coffee, and it wasn't sour at all. We also liked the chai latte. It did look gold. The chai spice wasn't too strong, so it didn't taste like one was drinking the holidays per sip. Lots of milk in this one, so this could fill you up a notch. read more

Big House Beans is a really big addition to the big culinary wave near my big azz house in Temescal. OK, my house is pretty small, but you get the theme. Big House Beans arrives long-awaited, as new customer after new customer said at the grand opening on Saturday this past weekend. There was an air of celebration as the super-cool owners, John and his wife, were on site for the launch. Plus, a photographer was doing pics and the staff was gifting fun items to everyone buying something. A free small bag of coffee beans was a nice touch. And the lattes my gf and I had were so good that we looked at each other when we finished them and said that we were sad to be at the bottom of our cups. So I went back in the afternoon and got another one! For anyone keeping score, I chose a cookie for my gift on the second visit. :) Talking to John and the friendly staff, I learned a lot about BHB and the long path to opening. For the record, my new favorite local cafe was 2 years in the making because of the pandemic. Here's a little background. They roast the beans in Antioch and have one other store in Brentwood. It's coffee with a purpose. Big House Beans contributes to various rehabilitation programs and supports the hire of former inmates. See the website for John's story and you'll understand his commitment and willingness to endure the long path to open the shop. He's helping to create jobs for people with barriers to employment. John talked to me about the community-centric vision of creating a vibe and a place for folks to gather. I love the idea of a space designed for people to come together. And a big gorgeous space at that. Seating is plentiful inside (they're adding the outdoor seating later). The stylish, mostly undercounter, La Marzocco Modbar espresso machine is the heart of the operation. Super-sexy, glistening chrome espresso taps are all you see above the counter. The glass pour-over coffee drippers and carafes continue the high-style approach to coffee making. It's not all about hot brew either. I enjoyed my nitro cold brew with vanilla syrup on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon just as much as the lattes I had on Saturday. Yeah, I went back the next day for a third visit. I love great coffee. The food is the other reason I love this place. The avocado toast was simply awesome. Thin slices of radish, accompany black pepper, red pepper flakes and fried onion slivers over creamy, green, avocado goodness on delightfully delicious toast...sensuous. Then I came back on Sunday just to have the waffle after seeing one on Saturday. It was as good as it looked - perfectly crispy but soft on the inside. A choice of toppings are offered but I enjoyed mine with butter and syrup. I want that waffle again and again...pretty much sensual. Almost too good to do every day. The wraps look really yummy too - four chatty teachers sitting next to me shared that they loved theirs. Community vibes in full effect. Bonus tip #1: Good Wi-Fi. No password required. I got a samoa latte and avocado toast for breakfast here recently. I wish the coffee were stronger, but the samoa latte satisfied my sweet tooth. The avocado toast came with crunchy stuff that made it taste different from your regular avocado toast. I liked it, but I wouldn't get it often. There were a lot of people studying/working when I came here on a Sunday morning, so it was relatively quiet, which was nice. My order came out pretty quickly. read more
