If you're looking for an authentic cantonese restaurant, Sanbo is it. My friend took me here and everything was delicious. I highly recommend calling in to make a reservation and also reserving their famous soy sauce chicken. Parking is the usual headache in the plaza but once you get in, get ready to eat! All the dishes are about $30 CAD so having multiple dishes does add up. I got a few dishes to share with my friends and overall everything was pretty good. I highly recommend coming here with a big group of friends/family so that you're able to try everything. Service was pretty good - staff were friendly and accommodating. They spoke cantonese, mandarin, and English. staff started with a lotus/beef soup which was light and delicious. yin yang fried rice: egg fried rice topped with half shrimp and cream and the other half with pork and tomato. the tomato half is reminiscent of the sweet and sour pork sauce and mixed together is pretty good. soy sauce chicken: one of their staples that you need to order in advance. the flavor was not just soy sauce - it was slightly sweet with a hint of mango. note that the half chicken does include bones and skin. fried tofu with spicy salt: the tofu is pretty crispy and seasoned really nicely with salt and garlic. chili green bean with minced pork: the green beans weren't spicy and they had a nice wok flavor - slightly smokey and crunchy. sweet and sour pork with pineapple: the pork is fried, crispy and covered in a sweet an sour sauce. The four of us came to the restaurant for the first time for our weekly family dinner tonight. How did I learn about the restaurant? A former colleague / friend who lives in the SF Bay Area and visits Vancouver regularly with her mother and siblings who live in Seattle. When we arrived tonight (Thursday) for our 1830 reservation, the restaurant was completely full except for our table who had yet to be cleared after the previous party had departed. That was a good sign to us. Soon after we sat down, I overheard a newly arrived party with no reservation asking for a table and told the waitress that they wouldn't mind even sitting next to the washroom. There was not a single table left. We had: - soy sauce chicken - lettuce stir-fried with preserved bean curds - beef brisket with dried bean curd hot pot I learnt from my friend that the restaurant is famous for their soy sauce chicken and it needs to be pre-ordered. I was glad that I had done so when I made our reservation. By 1900, I overhead another waitress telling another newly arrived party that the restaurant sold out of soy sauce chicken for the night. All the dishes were great. The chicken pieces were warm (vs served room temperature at many other restaurants) and flavourful throughout (skin and flesh). As simple as a stir-fired lettuce dish, we could stop eating it. Every bite was crunchy with just the right amount of preserved bean curd sauce and just a slight hint of heat from the green chilli peppers. The beef briskets were tender (and my 91-year old father had no problem eating them) and with the perfect portion of lean meat and fat. It is a neighbourhood type restaurant and every waitstaff member was friendly and helpful. Since my father moved into his senior residence in Richmond in November last year, we have been exploring different restaurants in the city. This is one mystery. When I saw the signage of this restaurant, it dictates so many flaws of a good restaurant. The front looks questionable, the name of the restaurant lacks identity, the description of restaurant is confusing... 茶餐廳. But the dishes seems to be more like 酒樓. We never tried this place and someone told us it was good. And we were not disappointed. Sweet and sour pork - Excellent meat will make a huge difference. A little fatty but not too much fat. The meat was tender and the batter was light yet crispy. The flavor also very good (though, a bit more vinegar may emit even better aroma. Soy sauce chicken - we have no idea if they were good but even we called in to reserve a table, she said, do you want to reserve a soy sauce chicken? Then I said yes. It must be something popular here. Sure enough! Amazing chicken perfectly cooked with sweet soy sauce, not too sweet, not too salty. I have come here for dinner on several occasions and finally got around to writing a review for this restaurant. I loved their Famous Chicken which is a soy sauce chicken. The meat was juicy and flavourful - just perfect. I really enjoy eating their fried noodles as well. I've had their Sliced Beef & Peppers w/ Black Bean Sauce on Rice Noodles a couple times and their chef is pretty consistent. They offer free sweet soup after the meals and it is usually hot red bean sweet soup. I have only visited them for lunch once, thinking that I would be able to order their Famous Chicken but they do not offer it for lunch on weekends. I opted for the Hainanese Chicken, but it just wasn't the same. Service is a hit or miss. If it gets busy, it can be difficult to grab the server's attention and they only interact with you when they take your order, set down the dishes, and give you the free dessert along with the bill. This is expected of a Chinese restaurant, but it may not be customary for others who don't visit Chinese restaurants often. As my family member says, this is a "homestyle" restaurant with no frills. The portions are big and there are a lot of families there celebrating birthdays with big tables that can sit 10 people. On July 1st, Canada Day, I had a delightful throwback on my visit to a Chinese restaurant in Richmond, on number Three Road. I came here hoping for good more authentic Chinese food that what I had had in Surrey/Delta last week. After thanking the parking gods for the prime spot that just opened up we walked in to place our take out order. The interior was a bit dated and it was loud like many typical Chinese restaurants. Customarily the food trumps over these details so we waited for a staff member who spoke English to take our order. Normally, menu pointing and cash takes care of transactions, I had to clarify that we had a high peanut allergy prior to ordering for my relatives. To be seated inside, wait at the front desk. If you would like to place an order to go, order at the desk closer to the kitchen. (I made this mistake.) We ordered: Shrimp dumplings with soup-okay- daughter says Tofu with vegetables-good but the sauce to food ratio was a bit too much. Chow mein with chicken-crispy noodles-Perfect! even with take out and the gravy on top the noodles still maintained their texture. Tender and flavorful chicken too. Return visit? The lady upsold us on the lobster lol and it came to $30/lb so that's $90 already, then we just got two standard dishes (sizzling tofu pot with mushroom and broccoli, and a house special chow mein) and that's $160! Solid Chinese restaurant in the Empire Mall complex. Parking is available in the strip mall lot. The inside is a bit dated, but typical for this type of Chinese restaurant. Staff were friendly. No complaints. The famous soy chicken here is their signature dish, and requires preordering a day before. I must say it's pretty solid. Not too salty, with a touch of sweetness. Definitely worth ordering. The chicken is pretty big too. I would say a half chicken is enough for 4-5 people. The other dishes I had were tasty but also typical. As in nothing really stood out. With that said, I really enjoyed the spicy garlic por chop, as well as the shredded beef with mixed mushrooms and gravy. Recently dined in this restaurant. Lucky we had a reservation, the place was very busy, busy, Atmosphere was a typical medium Chinese place but the food were quite pricey. We ordered their famous Soy chicken, pretty standard, no surprises. The fish skins dish was the only plus. Another stir fried fish maw, supposed to have dry scallops sauce, that appeared missing. Came here for take out on Lunar New Year and expected to wait a long time and we were right but the food was tasty (albeit a bit cold) and the price was reasonable considering the amount of food we received. We ordered the Lunar New Year set menu for 6:15 and received our food at around 6:50 but the number of people waiting for take out was insane and they had absolutely not system going on. The star of the show was to be their lobster with noodles which had a really large portion of noodles and well cooked lobster but unfortunately was quite cold by the time it was brought home. We also enjoyed the sweet and sour pork that was quite tasty and the meat wasnt too fatty but I found that they gave lots of smaller pieces in our dish. The soy sauce chicken is famous for a reason with tender meat and a was flavourful even without the soya sauce poured on top. My mom loved the dried oysters with dried scallops that was part of the New Year special especially because they dont usually offer this any other time of the year. She gladly devoured the dish which also had some lettuce, roast pork and "fat choy". The meal came with some stir fried garlic greens and although I found the sauce too oily, my family really liked the flavourful veggie dish since our household doesnt often add anything to our greens! Finally, we added on an order of curry beef brisket since it is one of their famous dishes and we were not disappointed. Plenty of tendon and beef along with potatoes in a mildly spiced yellow curry that had all the traits of a HK style curry. In addition to these dishes, we also received a large portion of rice, baked tapioca pudding, red bean soup and their "daily soup". The largest complaint of the night was that their daily soup would in no way feed 6 (more like 3) and this was a meal that is meant for 6 people! Overall, the service was non-existent with the amount of orders tonight and due to their inefficient system, some food was cold and some was hot by the time we started eating meaning that the microwave had to be used. Grayson and I have started to have takeout lately because I've been obsessed with having picnics to enjoy the last bits of summer. This time we decided to visit Sanbo Chinese Restaurant in Richmond. Sanbo Chinese Restaurant offers traditional Chinese dishes including rice, noodles, meat, and desserts. The preserved vegetables and pork noodle soup was not what I expected. Instead of being in a dry mixture of pork and vegetables, it came with a thick soy sauce based roux. I mixed the roux in with the rice noodles and it was almost as though I could enjoy it as soupless noodles! I eventually added in the soup because the mixture was on the salty side. Unfortunately, this didn't help because the soup was also very salty. Overall, the noodles were pretty average but hit the spot. read more

My mom recommended this place for traditional Chinese stir-fried dishes and Hong Kong style set meals. They've just opened up in Empire Centre (between the supermarket and Double Double) but are constantly busy with a line out the door, so reservations are a must. We came here last Saturday with a reservation for 7 pm and sat down closer to 7:30. Ambiance wise, Sanbo is no frills. They've packed a lot of tables into a small space and the restaurant is very reminiscent of hole-in-the-walls you'd find in Hong Kong. Considering the high turnover rate, they are still fairly clean and the space is brightly lit. They have an extensive menu with all sorts of offerings like congee, fish soup noodles, and fresh seafood. Most diners during my visit were sharing an array of dishes family style, and this is the route we went as well. I wanted to try a lot on the menu, but my mom dissuaded me and we ended up with four dishes between the four of us. Thank god because every table also gets a complimentary tureen of soup, rice, and dessert. The portions here are HUGE, especially for the price you pay. We started off with half of their signature Rose Wine Soy Sauce Chicken. We had to pre order this dish ahead of time and I found it very well-executed, maybe even better than the one from Red Star or Hoi Tong. The meat is tender and the soy sauce marinade is well-balanced with aromatic hints of rose wine. Another signature dish you must order here is the famous Curry Beef Brisket and Tendon. It's filled with fatty pieces of brisket and huge pieces of tendon throughout, all fall apart tender. There's an abundance of potatoes to soak up the flavourful curry as well - I loved this indulgent dish, even as leftovers over rice the next day. With two hearty, meat centric dishes out of the way, we dipped into veggies and seafood for our last two dishes. I chose the XO Prawn and Vermicelli Clay Pot on a whim and it was probably my favourite dish all night. With lots of springy, shell-on prawns sauteed in garlic, dried shrimp and scallions, this dish is huge on flavour. All of the aromatics are absorbed into the accompanying vermicelli, which is cooked perfectly al dente. On the other hand, the Roasted Garlic and Mushroom Pea Tips were a nice palate cleanser. The pea tips are young and fresh, perfectly cooked in a light consomme. Despite being a new restaurant, Sanbo is a great option for Chinese family-style dining. You may have to wait awhile in line and seating isn't the most comfortable, but the food here is delicious and full of value. I will definitely be back to try out more dishes on their huge menu! read more

My Cantonese friend recommended this place so we had to try it. It's walking distance from Aberdeen Mall. Everyone in the restaurant was Chinese except us. We were ISO hong Kong fried noodles and we were very happy to have found it here. So so good. The congee was good too but maybe a little watery and the sweet and sour pork was the best we've ever had. The only dish we didn't like was the sticky fried rice. One of my good friend recommended this restaurant. It's a very casual Chinese restaurant, a little hidden beside another Chinese restaurant, I know a bit weird. We got a table in a room with 2 other tables because the main dining area was pretty crowded and noisy. The dining atmosphere is very causal with the typical Chinese service so don't expect them to roll out the red carpet for you. Apparently they are pretty famous for their soy chicken and king crab?!? Okayyyyy.... Soy chicken and an 11 pound king crab was preordered. Here were the food we ordered on our first visit; 1. Daily soup (pork bone soup with lotus roots). It was free, tasted quite a strong amount of msg. 2. Stir fried ling cod meat with celeries and snow peas. Average, typical dish you can get at most Chinese restaurants. 3. Ling cod belly with tofu and bean curb sticks. Maybe if this dish was in a sizzling clay pot, it would be tastier and aromatic. 4. Soy chicken chef's specialty. Pretty well done in terms of taste and balance. Let's not over hype it, this was pretty good but I have had better soy chickens. 5. King crab legs steamed with green onions. Don't have to be always steamed with minced garlics. Perfectly done, could tasted the freshness of the king crab meat and the green onion didn't masked the authentic taste of the crab like the garlic does. 6. King crab body stir fried with garlics and Shanghai rice cakes. Nice settle taste and the rice cakes were tasty with the king crab flavour fused in. 7. King crab seafood fried rice. It was okay, I usually preferred this dish to be baked with sauce. 8. Red bean dessert. Typical freebie from most Chinese restaurants, this is nothing compared to a good home made version. Overall, the food was decently good and the price was quite fair. It is highly recommended to preorder the soy chicken in advance, most of the time they are sold out. I wouldn't say it's a 4 or 5 stars, that's a bit over hyping it. A place you go to get Cantonese-style Chinese food that tastes decent and doesn't cost a whole bunch. Went there for Friday dinner and it was busy, but there wasn't a wait to get a seat. It's in a strip mall near the Richmond Centre sky train station. You don't go here for the decor or roomy seating, but the menu is large and contains everything from wonton soup to stir-fry noodles to seafood including Alaskan King crab. Most of the items are inexpensive. We ordered the satay beef wide rice noodles, and the special halibut. The noodle portion was very large, and tasted decent. The halibut was delicious and very flavorful and crispy. They even threw in the daily soup for free. Overall the meal was $35, and there was enough leftover for lunch for one of us. read more

The dishes are on par with #9(Lansdowne). They serve food on big plates to make it look like a generous portion---30%meat and 70% cubed bell peppers/onions, cubed vegetables. The soy chicken has been BRINED so much+ stewed on low heat for so long that the meat is on the border of being mushy(reminds me of Costco's rotisserie chicken)!All meat dishes are at the $20 mark, just not good enough both quality and tastewise even for a Hkg style "Cafe". Spend a few more dollars, go to other mid priced "Restaurants" like Tin Tin Harbor, Shang Garden or Continental and u can really savor the tasty dishes from their skillful chefs! We passed by a couple of times and always saw a line. So we decided to try it out. Reservations are a good idea as they are so busy (Even on weekdays). Their decor is minimal but new and clean. The staff was polite. Their Soy Sauce Chicken is delicious. It was very fresh and cooked perfectly. The meat is smooth and silky. Just the right amount of soy sauce and sweetness. I also liked their Shrimp & vermicelli cooked in clay pot with XO sauce. The Shrimp was fresh, the XO sauce had a lot of minced garlic, and the vermicelli was thin and chewy. You all think I'm crazy posting up 5 star reviews for places that maybe shouldn't get them. But I'm posting here for their Wunton and dumpling soups. Which according to my brothers and I, are really good. Where else are you going to find garlic slices for that extra oooomph of flavour? P-chan drank all his soup! He loved how the wuntun dumplings are not those monstrosities that you now find elsewhere. It was a bit of a throwback to the 1970's style Hon's, before everyone made Har (HAH) Wunton. He said they looked cute. With a lot of the Cantonese noodle places slowly disappearing we needed to find this place. We needed to find a place when we craved for this style of food that we were brought up on in the 70's. Sanbo for lunch is so much better than that for us. As a result I had to bring workplace friends here recently and they too liked it. Mind you some of the cuts of meats could be a bit better, but then again. where else are you going to find a piece of curry beef brisket that's cut so big that you have to take 6 bites out of it in order to eat it. The Beef tendon is gigantic! (some of the pieces are not cut) we'll have to come back and try that dish again just to make sure. What have I tried there so far? -Siu gao (dumpling) noodle soup - very good. -Wuntun noodle soup - Very good. -Curry beef brisket lo-mein - very good, decent portion too. -Deep fried tofu with spicy sauce - mmmmm yes, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and nice and spicy garlicy flavoured. -gai lan vegetable with oyster sauce. - average I need to come back for more. One of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Richmond. I probably come here once a month with my family. Making reservations are recommended because they tend to get quite busy. The food is always delicious and the servers have good customer service, helpful, and attentive. The prices are a bit higher than most regular Chinese restaurants but worth it.
