I needed to come here after visiting an expensive Michelin star place for dinner. I was still hungry. I walked in and ordered a beef stew wonton noodle for takeout. The wonton were good. It was plump and full of shrimp. The beef stew was nice and fork (chopstick) tender. The noodles were good, not mushy. It was good Cantonese comfort food. This restaurant is unassuming, specializing in congee, noodles and typical dishes. However tonight's king crab was better than some high end Chinese restaurants. Kudos to the chef. Under the weather so perhaps my taste buds are not the same but was craving congee and heard this was legit so ordered a chicken and a fish congee. The portions for both were huge, it was very reasonable. It was comforting when you've got the flu. But the flavor was ok, I added sliced ginger, soy sauce and sometimes chili to add more flavor, perhaps that's what I got used too when I used to have it more often in HK? Also didn't realize the chix was with bones (aware that's better) but I almost swallowed one of the smaller bone pieces. read more

This place is delicious! The noodle and dumpling soup was flavorful and delicious, sautéed pea shoots had a perfectly balanced texture, the sliced pork was moist; the real surprise was the egg and shrimp over noodles. I was a little skeptical when ordering, but was so pleasantly surprised; the flavors are light and clean, you can taste each unique ingredient and the texture of the shrimp was firm with a little snap when bit into and perfectly cooked. Make sure to order Chinese salted donut! The servers were efficient and friendly, and the ambiance is bright and clean. Great for a couple, but if you come with 4 or more, you'll be able to comfortably try more dishes. We're visiting from Los Angeles for a couple of days and we will absolutely be coming back before leaving. read more

I understand they are busy most of the time even with the construction zone for the sky train in front, I betcha they will be waiting out the door when sky train opens. The deep fried pork in garlic honey is not greasy but is crunchy and dripping in honey. It is a party in your mouth. We got a half order of the deep fried squid with jalapeños and green onions; exceptional because of the texture. The Sweet sticky rice wrap had nice soft pieces of pork inside. Great food but very inconsistent service. Last time I ordered Wonton noodles and added bbq duck. I received 3 Wonton in the noodle and 6 pieces of duck, 3 breast 3 dark meat. Today I ordered cha siu and added duck but I only got 3 pieces of duck. I tried to explain (not complain) that I gotb6 last time but the indifferent waitress just said it's always been like this. Every time I come here, it's because I am craving the flavour of home and my childhood. On this particular day, I was working from my friend's house, cat-sitting, and I was craving wonton noodle soup for lunch. Congee Noodle House was pretty busy for lunchtime, with a short lineup for takeout at the counter. The lady behind the counter is extremely efficient and direct, which I find really great to cut through all the noise and chaos of the restaurant. I ordered a wonton noodle soup with beef brisket (this cost extra) for takeout. It came out after about 10 minutes. My photo is after I plated the takeout into a bigger bowl, which just made my eating experience much better lol. The wonton soup was everything I wanted! Big shrimp flavour, clear tasty soup broth, well-cooked noodles and vegetables. The additional beef brisket was good too; I find their beef to be tender and flavourful. I did think that the beef pieces were a little too fatty to my liking, though that's what made it taste so good... The serving was a good size, because I was full! Will definitely be back! read more

Had congee $11 and boiled dumplings $13. It is average. Congee is oversized, that's not necessarily a good thing. Not much taste. The meats are average. The dumplings again are oversized. MSG in it. Thirsty later that night and had to take a coke to help out the thirst. $28.50 overall incl tips and tax . It is not aweful but definitely not something I can recommend. For this price, not difficult to a good restaurant in downtown for a plate. The payment system is aweful. The mobile payment system only takes debit card and it was not working with tangerine. I had to e-transfer as a last resort. I don't know how they can manage in this age without a proper payment system. Because of this, I take 2 points off. It could have been 3 points , but 1 point now because of the bad experience of payment . I wasted 30 mins on that Won't go back. They are trying to save the credit card fees in the expense of customer services. It tells a lot of their mind set how far they will go to make a profit . I was so looking forward to my visit Saturday night as this was one of my favorite places. What a disappointment! Silverfish, flavor was good, but the fish itself was like leather, and perhaps sitting in the freezer since they last opened. Was chewy, and tasted freezer burned. Mixed braised pork noodle. Who in Vancouver serves this cold? Tasted like pork jerky. Again chewy was the theme though serving was generous, but way way way too much oil. Garlic snow pea shoots was the best item, fresh and as expected. Mike tea was ok, but too much evaporated milk. Congee was fine though a little runny. Lastly, I still don't get it. Congee Noodle House was closed for a long time. They recently reopened and we were so happy to finally be able to dine at this old favourite of ours. Wonton Noodle Soup Sliced Fish Congee Salted Chinese Doughnut Wonton Noodle soup came with 5 pieces of wonton.The wonton dumplings were big, with lots of big chunks of prawn inside. There was more prawn than pork inside these dumplings, which @soldbytimtham loved. Soup broth was quite standard in terms of flavor but still very tasty. Sliced Fish Congee had a nice, smooth texture. As warm, hearty and tasty as we remembered it, and the Chinese Doughnut paired very nicely with it. They've revamped their menu. While it has the old classics on it, it has some fancier new additions to it as well. For example, there's a page in the menu for Peking Duck, and also one page dedicated to Vegetarian items. The one thing I really wish they would add is a Vegetarian Congee. It's great that they have Vegetarian offerings but with a name like Congee Noodle House, I find it surprising that they don't have a Vegetarian option for the main food their restaurant is known for! The congee and wonton/dumplings are always a favourite. I went again recently after their reopening. Food is as good as I remember. Prices are reasonable and portions are good. It's just a dirty as before. And service is as you'd expect from a typical old school HK place. It's got that charm for sure. Parking is street or their back lot with a few spots. The thing is this: - I asked for 1lb (and I meant 1lb, not like 1.75 lb) then they had to remove some, and then they found out I had only literally exact cash for 1 lb. (Typical Asian tactic. They always try to sell more than you asked for. You want 1 lb. Ask for half. You'll probably end up with 1lb) - second issue is. They owed me change. It's NOT YOUR DECISION to keep any change and assume "keep the change". You never asked me if I wanted my nickel back. I don't. But you didn't ask. That makes you look either incompetent you cannot count, or you are that cheap you want that $0.05..... either way it looks bad on your part. It isn't about the money. Finally had a chance to come back and enjoy the goodness after the parking lot caved in back in 2019. 4 years and 3 months they were closed. Now they're back. Honestly the place is basically unchanged. The place was just packed, and it's easy to see why. Maybe I didn't take a good enough look, but the interior is identical to before the cave-in, right down to the water damage on the tiles. The damage to the building is towards the rear (where there's a private dining room), so maybe they fixed up that part. As for the food selection and quality, it's basically unchanged as well. Awesome. Some of my friends have mentioned that their poor service (from being shortstaffed) is unchanged, and I would definitely have to agree with that as well. The pricing is a bit more than the competition, but this place has enough local fame that they can still fill the place. In any case, glad to see that this place is back. read more

Watch out foreigners!! They do not accept other credit cards except domestic debit cards. And when they convert your currency to Canadian dollars they jack up the exchange rates to their favor! I was dumbfounded and trusted the cashiers conversion and later found out I was scammed and the bill was $20 usd more! **Update 12/26/2023** I figure, after 5 years, it's time for an updated review! This place is still my go-to place on Christmas, for take-out Chinese food. The food is fresh, the cuisine is somewhat "Americanized Chinese" (which I like), the menu selections are enormous, the portions are large. And - and this is key - they are open on Christmas! Yeah! But, a few things have changed since my last review (and not for the better): -there is a lot of construction on Broadway due to the big Skytrain project, so there is no street parking at all on Broadway in front of this restaurant, for blocks. Of course, this is not the restaurant's fault at all, but the parking issue took me by surprise yesterday evening, and it took a while to find an available spot in the area. Just be forewarned about parking. -this restaurant does not deliver (but there's always take-out) FYI -this restaurant does not accept credit cards or foreign debit cards, only cash or Canadian bank debit cards FYI -lastly - and this is perhaps my biggest gripe - if you check out their website and call in an order for pick-up, be prepared for a HUGE difference in pricing when it's time to pay for your order in the restaurant. Their website's prices are half of what they will charge you for the dishes. I was expecting to pay $37.50 + taxes and tip for the 3 dishes I ordered (according to the prices listed on their website), but was very surprised to be charged $66.60 + taxes (nearly $70) for the order. I don't like surprises, especially those concerning money. So, if you're checking out thier website, know that the prices listed are NOT accurate. By A LOT. (I'm attaching a copy of my bill so you can see the actual prices of the three dishes ordered). After a few years, this gem that opens till 2am ... is loud, bustling with people and it's back! As usual groups of people are waiting in line, make reservations if you have a big group. Don't come here with the same expectations from 3 years ago. Portions are smaller and prices maybe a touch higher but overall it's a great place for lots of options. Taste wise, probably not as great. I have to return a few more times to try their congee and other dishes before I can make a proper call. I saw someone who ordered the lobster noodles and I immediately wanted that dish as well. Ask what the dessert of the day is at the end. They normally hand out complimentary red or green bean soup. First time back at Congee after the reopening. Yes, worth the wait...congee wth chicken and Chinese mushrooms is perfect for this blustery afternoon. Rich chicken broth, long cooked mushy rice, lots of tender sliced chicken. Tasty and I feel healthier with the first bite. Chinese donut, crisp, the cooking oil is fresh. They still have the row of small tables for solo diners! A great little feast. Still in the same location half a block west of Main on East Broadway. This place is my aunt's go-to and after going here for several years with her family, I can see why! A lot of the dishes are great! Some are a hit-and-miss, but it can also depend on the day. This time around we got the beef and lettuce fried rice, beef and soy sauce fried flat noodle, beef lettuce wrap, deep fried minnow, and deep fried squid. We also got congee, but I didn't eat any. All these dishes overfilled our table of nine. Highlights: beef and lettuce fried rice was SOO good! A little bit salty but it still didn't take away from just how delicious it was. The beef and soy sauce fried flat noodle was too bland and too oily. Deep fried minnow was PERFECT and my favourite dish of the day. Perfectly crisp but not hard for my soft mouth. The deep fried squid on the other hand felt over-fried. Beef lettuce wrap was delicious as usual. I didn't eat the congee but my brother said it was bland. Mix it in with extra spicy salt from the squid/minnow though and I'm sure it's delicious! Service is really great here in my opinion, and the space is much like any Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. Congee Noodle House has always been my go-to place for Cantonese congees since around late 2000s. Their creamy congees always came piping hot with a good amount of whatever ingredients I ordered. I went there today with my parents for lunch and I left happy again. I had a sampan congee. My mom ordered one with congee and minced pork. My dad opted for flat rice noodle with beef brisket in soup. We shared a plate of rice rolls with Cantonese doughnuts. I was famine and was craving something hot and filling, so I came here to order take out (I did not feel like having lunch all by myself in a restaurant). I arrived around 1:45 p.m. on a Sunday. The place was quite busy and there were two people ahead of me at the front desk. The staff was quick and they gave me a menu to look at while I waited. I ordered Diced BBQ Pork/Shrimp/Egg/Green Onion Fried Rice which was $19.95, and the place does not accept credit cards. The price of $10.50 on their website was probably from a long time ago. It took about 10 minutes for my order to be ready. The fried rice was still piping hot when I ate it in my car, which was parked 6 blocks away. The restaurant has free parking at the back, but it was full. The taste of the food was really good, the green onion was fragrant and there was a generous portion of shrimp and BBQ pork. We were lucky to find one free and parked there. We entered the restaurant through the back door and there was still a seat available so we were able to sit down right away. First, we ordered a very simple soup, a very light taste and some meat and veggies inside. I ordered my favorite porridge with preserved egg and shredded pork. Oh definitely highly recommend it. My friend had the hotpot with fish head and fish body was steamed and veggies. I think this fish was probably monkfish. Both fish dishes were delicious, the fish was soft and had a nice flavour. Also we ordered shrimp wonton soup noodle. This shrimp wontons were nice flavor and light soup. It wasn't oily at all and was a healthy choice. Good place for Hong Kong style Chinese food! We got the rice roll donut as a side which I quite enjoyed. Their mains have quite large portion sizes (our dish was more than enough to feed three people) with the taste being pretty typical of most Chinese restaurants. Small renovations add up to a nicer restaurant experience. New and more upscale menu items to be tried down the road. Parking if anything has gotten worse with Broadway street construction. Biggest takeaway is that the food is still as good but prices have gone up 30%. It is not a value proposition anymore, but I guess that goes for all the Vancouver dining scene! So there is the hype about this "Institution" of canto fast food being revived after their neighbor to the East started to build there some 3 years ago.. obviously the engineers who were involved along with the demo crew should have their licenses revoked but that's another topic for another day .. this refreshed version looks for the most part the same as it was before it was condemned by the city with the caged in parking lot.. the new parking lot looks a lot better as it should but that long walk from the back of the parking lot to the main area is still the same.. the only noticeable difference is in the fresh seafood tanks which are small and given the typical clientele they want to attract obviously don't have the deep pockets as do their neighbors on the Westside.. With the parking lot full at 4:30pm on a Friday I was expecting the dining room to be abuzz but when I got inside there were less than half a dozen tables (mainly 2's) that were occupied. Either their staff are all parked there or their not so considerate Neighbouring businesses were parking in freshly paved asphalt.. We sat down to try and digest their Huge menu where they tried to be upscale with things such as lobster and abalone but $58 for a solitary abalone is like not knowing if it were fresh or more than likely canned. With four of us, we ordered 5 items ( soya chicken, Dry Scallop, seafood fish maw soup, Assorted Meat/Seafood Bean curd hotpot, Braised String beans and Panfried Silverfish omelette) and steamed rice Every item was served medium warm and fairly bland ... perhaps the chef hasn't gotten his Wok Hay skills back as of yet.. Looking around the cooked meat Station the Roast Pork and Duck looked "really roasted" although the Char Sui looked decent The waitress was extremely patient and very helpful giving suggestions mainly towards their Lobster and Abalone items but she didn't force the line which was much appreciated.. There was a line building as the restaurant had more large tables than small so the crowds were literally standing behind my chair and breathing down on our food. $140 later they didn't even offer any Chinese dessert soup but they were very efficient in cleaning off our table and all but escorted us out of our chairs for their waiting inspecting diners... One of my first stops when I visited Vancouver and have to say its a good stop for your typical Hong Kong breakfast fare. It was pretty large but I can see it getting super packed during actual breakfast hours(we got here in the afternoon). I've honestly never been a big fan of congee, this has changed a bit, but I felt I had to try the congee for the name sake of the restaurant. The congee was a good consistency but nothing special, very much your homey bowl of congee. Brings back memories of being sick to be honest but not in a bad way. Its just a comfort food given by Chinese parents. I've always been a bigger fan of the typical egg noodles with wonton but my friend insisted on getting the rice noodles. Again, this was nothing special. It hits the spot on a cold, rainy day, of which Vancouver has plenty! The wontons were well wrapped and large, filling was good, and they didn't break apart upon eating so plus points there. Personally I felt the rice noodles were too plain for the overall bowl but that's personal preference. Lastly, one of my HK bfast faves: the wrapped Chinese donut. I always get the sauces on the side just cause I'm not the buggest fan of dipping it into hoisin sauce as I prefer just soy sauce and chili oil. From what I can recall, the dish was again pretty standard. It was warm and well steamed but the Chinese donut didn't retain the crispy, crunchiness I enjoy.
