As a cat lover, I had to check out this place - who can resist a place with a cat prominently featured on its sign! Conveniently located near the ferry terminal and also near the Hyannis Harbor hotel where we were staying for a weekend getaway to the Cape a few weekends ago. We walked down the street, checked out the menu which looked good. It was a bit hot so we decided to sit inside however it felt a bit dark inside so we went back outside and were seated under the covered area outside. The menu is quite extensive so no trouble finding something you like. We ordered the crab cake appetizer which was good - I prefer more lump crab meat and this was all minced together but still good. For my main dish I ordered the salmon which came with roasted potatoes and veggies with a light sauce. It was nice - salmon was tender, potatoes were crispy and tender - good portion size. Hubs ordered the dayboat cod and he enjoyed it. Servers were nice and they even took our photo on request. It's a popular spot you can tell - both inside and outside were busy. Stopped into Black Cat for a late lunch after exploring Hyannis. Everything about our experience was kind of mid. Our server was ok and when my friend asked for a straw she brought over two unwrapped straws completely holding the ends that my friend would either be placing in her drink or into her mouth. My friend did not use the straws. My friend also asked for "to-go" silverware as her cutlery was a bit dirty - our server seemed annoyed. Small requests overall that made us feel like we were burdening her. I got the Buffalo Cauliflower which was ok. Drenched in sauce and soggy. This was our first experience at The Black Cat Tavern and if we were staying in the area longer, we would definitely return. We were a party of 6. We sat in the heated patio which was fine for us (2 adults and 4 teenagers). Our server Alex was great! He made us feel at home right from the beginning. He explained the specials and answered our questions we had on the menu items. His descriptions of the food were so vivid, we wanted to try everything. We settled on a variety of items from the clam chowder to fish tacos. I personally started with clam chowder then the blackened swordfish which was excelllent. I heard from the locals that this was a sister restaurant to Colombo's, so I had to try it. Friendly staff when I walked in. Torrey the bartender was awesome. Very attentive. She made sure my glass was always full. I met the chef as well. Mark might have been his name. In ordered some clam chowder, wow was I impressed. Then I had the lobster we quesadillas. The amount of lobster and the sauce geez he nailed it. My friends also ordered the salmon with potatoes rare. Absolutely full of flavor. And salmon tacos I believe. The menu is pretty well balanced. 6 of us came here for a late lunch as we liked the name and were told it had good food. We called and spoke with Scott, the manager, to make reservations and had to change them a couple times due to bad traffic getting there, and he was super accommodating. I had a turkey wrap with no bacon and it was really good and my wife had a Side Caesar salad that she really enjoyed. Our 4 friends also enjoyed their meals. The only downside was that one of us ended up sitting directly in the sun and started to feel the heat pretty quickly, so keep that in mind if you go on a sunny day. We started with a cup of chowder and now I see why it's award-winning: creamy, flavorful, and absolutely a must-try. The giant lobster roll was good, not great. It was fresh and generously portioned, but the flavor fell a little flat for me. If you're not already a lobster roll lover, you could probably skip this one. Tried Black Cat Tavern in Hyannis while exploring Cape Cod. It's right near the port, so it's a bit touristy, but still worth checking out. We had the Hyport Burger, baked scallops, and a bowl of clam chowder. All were really good the chowder especially. Creamy and flavorful, definitely one of the better ones I've had on this trip. The burger was juicy and came with all the right toppings. The scallops were baked just right, not dry at all. Portions here are huge. We didn't finish everything except for the chowder that was gone fast. The place has a chill, nautical vibe and there was a live singer the night we went, which added to the mood. Our server, Katie, was super nice and helpful. Prices are on the higher side, but expected for the area. Would I come back? Maybe but I'd also want to try the other restaurants nearby next time. We really enjoyed our visit to The Black Cat Tavern. The location is great, right on the water with a lovely atmosphere. The lobster roll was massive and absolutely delicious. We also ordered the seafood tower, and everything on it was fresh and tasty, except for the tuna, which wasn't our favorite. Service was decent, our waitress was a bit scattered at times, but nothing that took away from the overall experience. The only real downside was the small table we were given. My family and I dined here during our recent Cape Cod trip. The location was within walking distance from our hotel. We were seated on the front deck, but still had views of the water across the street. I ordered the Fried Cod Melt with French fries, and the Banana Cream Colada. My friend and I came here with no reservation for dinner and we were seated right away. We didn't realize we were in the harbor shack which is separate from the full restaurant haha. It was hard to tell from the way we walked in from the parking lot on the side, we just walked up the first set of stairs we saw with a hostess stand and thought that was the full restaurant. We sat in the Shack Out Back. They had live acoustic music on a Wednesday night around dinner time. He was very entertaining. Played some Tom Petty without me even requesting it. Our server was super sweet and attentive. Started with the oysters--they come with cocktail sauce and lemon by default, but ask for the mignonette (trust me, do it!). Hands down my favorite oysters I had on the Cape. Tried the lobster bisque too. Not a ton of lobster chunks, but the flavor was still amazing. I'd totally get it again. I thought the chowder was very good and served in a coffee cup which at first was confusing but when I thought of "a cup of chowder" very cute. Went on a Thursday 3:30 late lunch early dinner time frame. Very friendly waitress. Lobster bisque was delivered quickly and delicious! Could have been a bit more lobster meat but we loved it. The crab cake was also so fresh and flavorful, loved it. Buffalo tenders great and spice just right. Chicken quesadillas good however they used dark chicken meat as opposed to white and that detracted the taste a bit for me, but it was still good but not excellent. Would have liked a little guacamole and sour cream w it but got salsa and sriracha Mayo. Casual atmosphere and enjoyable vibe. Would definitely return. Pricey but that's the area, so expected. This mother's day weekend Saturday night pouring outside, a man met us at the door, having dinner? Yes, they sat us down. 15 mins into sitting we hear that man say "dont close the kitchen" i begin with are you closing? The man says yes but the kitchen is open! Great! Have an amazing dinner the food is always great! See a woman across from us (manager giving looks, staring at the table) then hear just want to clean up for mothers day! So we say ok we can finish our drinks at the bar, they said yes! Go to the bar to be completely ignored by the bartender. After 20 mins i say to the bartender talking to 4 other people with full drinks, are you closed? He states Yes! What..... Why seat us if you are closing and why give looks because we haven't finished eating. Why let us go to the bar then... SMH Bad Management! Sorry this was the worst experience i have ever had there. Surrounded by dozens of appealing restaurant options in the bustling, tourist-friendly heart of Hyannis, my mom and I chose The Black Cat Tavern on account of its convenience to our lodging (the Hyannis Travel Inn), a glowing recommendation by the affable and knowledgable concierge at our front desk, as well as - admittedly - its fun and slightly macabre name. Boy, did we pick right. Maybe we should play the lotto tonight too, because this place is a total winner. We sat outside, which isn't always synonymous with attentive service, but that couldn't be further from the case at The Black Cat. This is a tightly run ship (nautical pun intended), and the service is impeccable. The entire staff is so welcoming, so diligent, and so kind...and fun! Cape Cod is a vacation destination, of course, and it's a breath of fresh sea air to spend time with employees who seem to be enjoying their experience as much as their sunburned customers. Our server was Olesya, and she's an absolute dream. I don't know if there's such a thing as National Waitstaff Of The Year Awards, but if she isn't at least nominated at this year's ceremony, I'll boycott the whole thing. In short, I can't recommend this place highly enough. The food is great (the chowder!), the portions are generous (food AND booze!), the price tag is way more reasonable than its nearby competitors, and it's a place you'll feel so comfy and looked after, you won't want to leave. We had a great patio dinner in late September, the Black Cat deserves much better reviews than I have seen here. Blackened swordfish was delectable with a creamy sauce and so rich. Has been ordered the shrimp scampi and when the seafood the scampi arrived, the server owned the mistake and gave it to him for the shrimp price. It had huge chunks of lobster in it and he was thrilled. I also had a side of grilled asparagus to go with my scampi, I ordered it after the fact when I saw the dish had no greens. And was very happy with it even if it was late. I had one craft cider and then I had to have another craft cider, it was so good. No dessert, we were completely stuffed with no leftovers but would absolutely recommend the black cat tavern. read more

And last Friday for a leisurely lunch - and as part of a Cape Cod Daily Deal, my wife and I found a booth and were thrilled with, well, everything! Well, their clam chowder deserves accolades for being so creamy, generous and utterly tantalizing; and my wife requested rolls - but warm crusty bread? (Very Zagat of you!) And imagine you're parched: my wife declared her Pear Tree Martini, "the best I've ever had!" Or desire fresh fish? Well, Tiffany suggested a bona fide gem: Blackened Day Boat Cod. When we inquired if it was heavily spiced, she replied, "No, it's quite mild," and she was spot on; my wife and I shared a broad plate of fresh cod in a lemon butter, gently tanned, over steaming Parmesan Risotto with a light lobster-veggie salsa. And for a sweet finish, we decided on their signature Carrot Cake; suffice it to say it might be the best dessert this side of Nantucket. And Tiffany's fresh-brewed coffee? Perfecto! He is pleasant, attentive and ensured he checked in on us throughout our meal. FOOD: The fish and chips were excellent. Flacky fish, thin, crispy fries and yummy cole slaw. The cornmeal cod was ok, not quite melt in your mouth texture. $29, it would have been better if accompanied by some type of rice or potato. It was a pretty presentation. BAR: Comfy seats, beautiful wooden bar. After we left I realized I was charged for a more expensive wine than I ordered, but that is on me for not catching it before settling up. First pour was the end of the bottle and a bit short, second glass was an average pour, $13 for La Crema. ATMOSPHERE: Indoors and outdoors are very inviting. Indoor decor is pretty cool. Parking can be a bit hairy. There is free valet parking, but it shares a lot with the ferry parking and was a bit confusing to navigate where we needed to go, as the first lot was full and was tight driving to the adjacent lot. We had a lovely dinner here on 3 November 2025. The restaurant is beautifully decorated for autumn. We sat by the fireplace. I had the Award-winning Clam Chowder, and it did not disappoint. Our server (I believe her name is Leone) was very polite and friendly. We told her about our black cat named Sherry. We rescued her from a no-kill shelter where she had been living for 10 years. Leone was so moved by our story that she gave us some Black Cat coaters and stickers. We would come back again because the food was really good and we had great service. Took a while for the two hostess standing there find a waitress to take my order . I thought the chowder was small for a bowl, but looking online a bowl is 8 to 12oz so there good . The chowder was mediocre at best , definitely not award winning but hot and ok. Ordered a 2nd cup of coffee and waitress didn't bring me any cream . They also provided my wife with this tiny receipt that was a hand written Gluten-free menu, she died of laughter but was very grateful! I think you guys should just print some GF menus up on printer paper & take it to Staples & have a few laminated. And tell the servers to let guest know there's a gluten-free menu available upon request. This would have saved my wife time from mulling over her options on the regular menu.
