My companion and I sat on the patio overlooking the harbor for an early dinner. My companion ordered a Bully Boy Vodka Bloody Mary, while I enjoyed a Black Cat Sangria. Both drinks were very good. After our drinks were served, I asked our server a few questions about the portion size of the calamari. Since we were still undecided about our selections, the server left us to consider our options. Once we had made our choices, however, we had difficulty getting the server's attention. My companion had to first motion to the server and eventually call out to get their attention--three times! We both started with a cup of New England Clam Chowder, although I ordered a bowl with my meal. There is definitely a noticeable difference in portion size between the cup and bowl. The chowder itself was excellent--thick, flavorful, and delicious. For our entrées, we selected Clam Strips and Calamari, both as side-dish portions. The food was very good, as were the drinks. Overall, we enjoyed the food, drinks, and beautiful harbor-side patio setting. As someone who work in the restaurant industry I hate doing this but unfortunately my experience at this restaurant ruined my romantic vacation. My boyfriend and I had such a great experience here our first night of vacation that we decided to come back our second night. So we went to the hostess and said table for 2 and took the buzzer and were told 45 minute wait. It was an hour wait but I loved the experience and was ok with waiting. So when our buzzer buzzed. I headed to the hostess stand and there was a long line. I didn't want to be rude so I said the lead hostess "hey I just got a buzz" she said "ok maam I will be right with you." She continued to take down the names of the multiple groups of people in line. I decided that I would go to the back of the line to be respectful. As we were just about to near the front I hear her say "table ___ is a no show we are giving away to table ___" the people she gave the table to were people who were bothering her about the long wait time while my boyfriend and I patiently waited. She went to then give me ANOTHER buzzer as she gave our table away although we were there on time and then ignored. I gave the new buzzer back to her and told her that we previously were there with our buzzer and told her and she told us to wait a minute but ignored us. My boyfriend chimed in to say that he saw her give the table away to the next people on the list that were bothering her while we patiently waited. The hostess didn't say sorry and let us leave after we were very respectful. As someone in the industry it breaks my heart. I have been in her position and have done everything I could to make it right and to allow my guests to have the best experience possible. All she did was stare at us as we expressed concern. I was deeply hurt after this interaction and left wondering what I did wrong. All I tried to do was be a loyal customer and be respectful and I was patient and was punished for being patient and respectful. All I want is some recognition and apology. read more

As a cat lover, I had to check out this place - who can resist a place with a cat prominently featured on its sign! Conveniently located near the ferry terminal and also near the Hyannis Harbor hotel where we were staying for a weekend getaway to the Cape a few weekends ago. We walked down the street, checked out the menu which looked good. It was a bit hot so we decided to sit inside however it felt a bit dark inside so we went back outside and were seated under the covered area outside. The menu is quite extensive so no trouble finding something you like. We ordered the crab cake appetizer which was good - I prefer more lump crab meat and this was all minced together but still good. For my main dish I ordered the salmon which came with roasted potatoes and veggies with a light sauce. It was nice - salmon was tender, potatoes were crispy and tender - good portion size. Hubs ordered the dayboat cod and he enjoyed it. Servers were nice and they even took our photo on request. It's a popular spot you can tell - both inside and outside were busy. Stopped into Black Cat for a late lunch after exploring Hyannis. Everything about our experience was kind of mid. Our server was ok and when my friend asked for a straw she brought over two unwrapped straws completely holding the ends that my friend would either be placing in her drink or into her mouth. My friend did not use the straws. My friend also asked for "to-go" silverware as her cutlery was a bit dirty - our server seemed annoyed. Small requests overall that made us feel like we were burdening her. I got the Buffalo Cauliflower which was ok. Drenched in sauce and soggy. We called and spoke with Scott, the manager, to make reservations and had to change them a couple times due to bad traffic getting there, and he was super accommodating. The only downside was that one of us ended up sitting directly in the sun and started to feel the heat pretty quickly, so keep that in mind if you go on a sunny day. We started with a cup of chowder and now I see why it's award-winning: creamy, flavorful, and absolutely a must-try. The giant lobster roll was good, not great. It was fresh and generously portioned, but the flavor fell a little flat for me. If you're not already a lobster roll lover, you could probably skip this one. This was our first experience at The Black Cat Tavern and if we were staying in the area longer, we would definitely return. We were a party of 6. We sat in the heated patio which was fine for us (2 adults and 4 teenagers). Our server Alex was great! He made us feel at home right from the beginning. He explained the specials and answered our questions we had on the menu items. His descriptions of the food were so vivid, we wanted to try everything. Tried Black Cat Tavern in Hyannis while exploring Cape Cod. It's right near the port, so it's a bit touristy, but still worth checking out. We had the Hyport Burger, baked scallops, and a bowl of clam chowder. All were really good the chowder especially. Creamy and flavorful, definitely one of the better ones I've had on this trip. The burger was juicy and came with all the right toppings. The scallops were baked just right, not dry at all. Portions here are huge. We didn't finish everything except for the chowder that was gone fast. The place has a chill, nautical vibe and there was a live singer the night we went, which added to the mood. Our server, Katie, was super nice and helpful. Prices are on the higher side, but expected for the area. Would I come back? Maybe but I'd also want to try the other restaurants nearby next time. We really enjoyed our visit to The Black Cat Tavern. The location is great, right on the water with a lovely atmosphere. The lobster roll was massive and absolutely delicious. We also ordered the seafood tower, and everything on it was fresh and tasty, except for the tuna, which wasn't our favorite. My friend and I came here with no reservation for dinner and we were seated right away. We didn't realize we were in the harbor shack which is separate from the full restaurant haha. We sat in the Shack Out Back. They had live acoustic music on a Wednesday night around dinner time. He was very entertaining. Played some Tom Petty without me even requesting it. Our server was super sweet and attentive. Started with the oysters--they come with cocktail sauce and lemon by default, but ask for the mignonette (trust me, do it!). Hands down my favorite oysters I had on the Cape. Tried the lobster bisque too. Not a ton of lobster chunks, but the flavor was still amazing. I'd totally get it again. Don't sit outside if you're a party of 2. They only have 1 table for 2 that is shoved literally in the entrance aisle with people bumping into you and standing over your head. We waited twice as long as the hostess quoted while she sat tons of larger parties that got there after us. No apology when we sat down. Chicken quesadillas good however they used dark chicken meat as opposed to white and that detracted the taste a bit for me, but it was still good but not excellent. Would have liked a little guacamole and sour cream w it but got salsa and sriracha Mayo. Casual atmosphere and enjoyable vibe. Would definitely return. Pricey but that's the area, so expected. She made sure my glass was always full. I met the chef as well. Mark might have been his name. In ordered some clam chowder, wow was I impressed. Then I had the lobster we quesadillas. The amount of lobster and the sauce geez he nailed it. My friends also ordered the salmon with potatoes rare. Absolutely full of flavor. And salmon tacos I believe. The menu is pretty well balanced. Came here before getting on the ferry to Nantucket (walkable). Came during the off season, but it was such a treat to be able to sit outside and see the marina. The service was great, I needed help finding gluten free options & one of the servers provided me with a handwritten multi page list of options, including things they can make thats not on the menu. Surrounded by dozens of appealing restaurant options in the bustling, tourist-friendly heart of Hyannis, my mom and I chose The Black Cat Tavern on account of its convenience to our lodging (the Hyannis Travel Inn), a glowing recommendation by the affable and knowledgable concierge at our front desk, as well as - admittedly - its fun and slightly macabre name. Boy, did we pick right. Maybe we should play the lotto tonight too, because this place is a total winner. We sat outside, which isn't always synonymous with attentive service, but that couldn't be further from the case at The Black Cat. This is a tightly run ship (nautical pun intended), and the service is impeccable. The entire staff is so welcoming, so diligent, and so kind...and fun! Cape Cod is a vacation destination, of course, and it's a breath of fresh sea air to spend time with employees who seem to be enjoying their experience as much as their sunburned customers. Our server was Olesya, and she's an absolute dream. I don't know if there's such a thing as National Waitstaff Of The Year Awards, but if she isn't at least nominated at this year's ceremony, I'll boycott the whole thing. In short, I can't recommend this place highly enough. The food is great (the chowder!), the portions are generous (food AND booze!), the price tag is way more reasonable than its nearby competitors, and it's a place you'll feel so comfy and looked after, you won't want to leave. We had a great patio dinner in late September, the Black Cat deserves much better reviews than I have seen here. Blackened swordfish was delectable with a creamy sauce and so rich. Has been ordered the shrimp scampi and when the seafood the scampi arrived, the server owned the mistake and gave it to him for the shrimp price. It had huge chunks of lobster in it and he was thrilled. I also had a side of grilled asparagus to go with my scampi, I ordered it after the fact when I saw the dish had no greens. And was very happy with it even if it was late. I had one craft cider and then I had to have another craft cider, it was so good. No dessert, we were completely stuffed with no leftovers but would absolutely recommend the black cat tavern. read more
