We came early (around 5:30 on a Friday), and we're glad we did. The restaurant filled up quickly and there were a lot of people waiting. We luckily got a spot right by the window to enjoy the view. We ordered the crab dip and clam strips as appetizers, and both were really good! Shrimp scampi was fine - nothing spectacular, but still good; plus it was a pretty large serving. Everyone else at dinner got some sort of scallops, crab cake, or fish, and they enjoyed their meals. Beautiful location on the sound making for what I'd assume stunning sunsets. Since we are all dealing with a pandemic we opted for carry out. Staff was lovely on the phone. Upon entering all members of the staff had mask and ensured proper social distancing. Note: no gloves. Food was good. The flounder was plentiful, fish bites yummy, crab cakes good not great but I use jumbo lump so I'm super picky. Kiddos grilled cheese I'm sure would be great if it wasn't carry out. My wife and I come down with friends each October. We always dine where at least once, more often several times. Great food and great service. There a review mentioning that they we asked to leave after an 1:40 minutes. This year the restaurant has a significant up tick in customers, with an average of 5 to 6 groups waiting at any given time for a table. We think the service is great and when the restaurant is not busy we have spent a long time dining. We highly recommend Sandbar & Grille. They don't believe in constitutional rights! We were seated immediately and had a party of 12! Our waitress was a little overwhelmed but quickly caught up. I ordered the crab legs (1.5 pounds) which were very good I will say. Very moist and meaty. My date however ordered the prime rib topped with lump crab meat. Worse steak he and I have ever tasted. I honestly thought it resembled chewing on a rubber dog toy, very fatty and rubbery. He ordered a medium well and you can see that is more of a medium rare/ rare steak. We spoke to our waitress about the discrepancies with his order and she told us she would bring a manager out, we never spoke to a manager. After she came and left our table 3 times after we made it evident that his food was gross she took off his meal. The meal wasn't the only issue with our visit; we only seen our waitress 2/3 times throughout our entire visit (aside from discussing the issues with our bill. She was more worried about the large table behind us and she also was playing with a customers baby and carried it into the kitchen with her. I have had better service and steak at any Outback Steakhouse. The managers at outback at least care to speak with their customers face to face. End result. We will not be returning to the Sandbar and grill. read more

Stuffed shrimp was room temperature and borderline inedible. Fried flounder was fine. "Spicy" shrimp had no seasoning whatsoever. Cole slaw was dry. With the first week of April being "off season" not a lot of places were open and we knew places were short-staffed. We picked Sandbar Grille, it was about an hour before closing and there were still quite a few cars in the parking lot. We were seated immediately since we wanted to eat at the bar. Our food was pretty good, our conversation with the bartender was great. He told us how much the island has changed over the 30 years he's been living there. My family and friends come here every summer. The food is excellent, the bar is in point, as well as the gorgeous view of the Sound. My newlywed wife and I dined in on 13JUN - her first time, and we were sat next to a wall on the lower level. Understandable with all the "social distancing" nonsense going on. Our server was very limited on personality and quite single demential. Never refilled our drinks (which we waited over 20 minutes for), and asking her for salt appeared to be quite a burden for her. Understandably, she had a full table of men she was wooing at the same time. Hopefully, they tipped her better than I. The bar seating is not first come first serve, though this wasn't an issue at all for us- just thought I'd make that point to others if it hasn't already been stated. This year has been no different... great food BUT, it has become VERY pricey so if you eat here you will have splurged. My wife and I ate at Sandbar and Grille last night and I can tell you now that we will not be back. I would love to regale you with stories of flavorless or improperly cooked meals, unsanitary conditions, or watered down cocktails. But no, all that was generally fine. I will tell you about the service we received at this establishment, which was satisfactory (at best) up until we were asked to leave. Allow me to start at the beginning. My wife and I decided to go to Sandbar and Grille while staying in Avon. We happened to be in the Outer Banks at the same time as some friends of ours from West Virginia who are about to move across the country. We met up with them and another couple at this restaurant, partly because of the good reviews, and party because of the convenient location between us. We arrived at 5:30 PM and ordered drinks at the waitresses leisure. There was not much rush for us, so I have no complaints with this or the fact that we ordered our dinners about 20 minutes after arriving. We enjoyed our meals and there were no major complaints with any of the food. Service was normal - my wife never got the hot sauce she asked for with her potato, but I have come to expect such things by now. Our plates were cleared, mine as I finished my last bite, and our checks were brought by someone other than our waitress a few minutes later. I should have picked up on some cues at this point, but I did not. We paid, but sat and visited for a few minutes, as I believe is normal. As I mentioned, we are on vacation and trying to visit with some friends who are in the same place out of coincidence, and who we may not see for some time. At about 7:10 PM our waitress approached me. She told me that there were other people waiting for a six-top, who had been waiting longer than they were told, so it would be great if we could wrap it up. Let me be clear, I understand that restaurants get busy. However, I cannot remember a time where I have ever been asked to leave an establishment because of this. We'd been seated for an hour and forty minutes, which I do not think is exorbitant. Our table spent a few hundred dollars this evening between drinks and our entrees, and honestly I am extremely angry and disappointed that after paying our bills we would be ushered out the door as if we had been loitering about the bar, drinking free refills on sodas. And to be frank, the table next to us was empty, and was also a six-top. There was nobody waiting at the door, possibly they were at the bar, but there wasn't a mass of patrons waiting in the entrance that I could see. Honestly, I'm not sure why our party received the treatment that we did, but I was happy with our service and meal up until they asked us to hurry up and leave. Doing so completely ruined my experience. Not only will I not return but I will be certain, when asked for recommendations in this area, to share with others the treatment we received at Sandbar and Grille. read more

Meal with a view! Views of Pamlico Sound made for a relaxing and romantic date. Big place...easy to find...easy to park. Tried a gluten free beer. They had Angry Orchards Apple Cider. It was cool, refreshing, and delicious. I'm not a beer drinker, but when I do, I like gluten free so I don't feel bloated. It was so good, we bought some at the store the next day. I had the coconut shrimp with spicy/sweet Thai sauce. Mmmmm good! The server/bartender was so great. After our meal I asked him where he likes to eat on the island (besides there, of course). He made a few recommendations, of which we tried two of. Glad we did, too. He also was the one who suggested buying the angry orchard apple cider from Conner's Marketplace. We did not have any plan going there , on our way we noticed the place and decided to check it out , they have a decent size parking lot . Right at the entrance they have a game room , it's pretty cool and entertaining after couple of drinks , I am sure families with kids would appreciate that . While waiting for out table we tried Buxton Breeze on the patio , live music , fantastic view and lightnings happening in distance made a memorable moment . I had french onion soup and crab cake. Soup bowl was huge ,enough for two people . Crab meat was fresh and delicious . Friendly and informative staff is a big plus for them . I totally recommend this place . read more

Everyone else in the party said the food was okay. The food wasn't worth the 2 hour wait and my crab legs were not worth the $39.99. Because there was nothing wrong with our food this rating is a 3. Excellent food - the Friday night special "crab stack" has me coming back for more. The picture is of 1/2 the order - so you can see a soft shell crab topped with a crab cake topped with fresh lump crab meat finished with a roasted red pepper (I think) sauce.
