Down here on a fishing trip and decided to check this place out...I was NOT disappointed. Sarah, our waitress, was awesome! She made great drink recommendations, had an awesome personality (especially putting up with the rest of our party), and was super attentive to our needs! The Calamari was excellent, lightly battered, perfectly cooked, and served with a delicious marinara dipping sauce. The Blackened Scallops were AMAZING, cooked to perfection, buttery, deliciously seasoned morsels fit for a king, and big! The Stuffed Shrimp, exquisite, savory, mouthwatering chariots upon which a large lump of blue crab dizzled with dijon ride into the gates of hell that are you mouth. Everything was incredible! This is one of the restaurants we decided to eat at while on vacation at Cape Hatteras. The food was really delicious and our waitress was super nice, wish I could remember her name so I could give her a shout out. There is a nice view of the sound and there was a little something on the menu for everyone, even if you are not a fan of seafood. I don't know why this place has gotten a bad rep. Our dinner was perfection from start to finish. The prices are a little steep, but that's anywhere waterfront in the outer banks. There were four of us that came here for dinner and we each loved our food. I chose the Tuna Poke and a cup of the clam chowder. Both were delightful. My mom got the shrimp and crab Alfredo and it was AMAZING!! Some of the best I have ever had. My husband ordered the dinner special of 1/2 a rack of ribs with fried shrimp. His ribs melted off the bone and there was a huge portion. The service was just perfect. The bartender took care of us and he was attentive and efficient. This was the best way to end our vacation. Stopped by for a midday drink and they were closed. It's classified as a bar. I don't know any bar that closes for two hours during the middle of the day. That's generally when happy hour starts! Any place that closes for two hours midday and doesn't even offer drinks to locals and passersby isn't a bar. If you don't want to serve food during those hours so be it but at least serve drinks. One staff maximum is all you will need and it will give the locals some place to go when they are done at the beach or are tired of their visitors. These places are like ghost towns because they shut their doors to customers. But yet they are the first to complain about only having 6 decent months to earn their keep. We probably would have spent $40 as would have the other people leaving the parking lot at the same time. Staff seems to be an issue with this place though so maybe they close for that very reason. Who knows. I just know we weren't the only people looking for a bar at 3pm. read more

I'm giving two stars because the rest of the party enjoyed their food and the crab dip was good but that was the end of the good points. The special was prime rib which is mostly what everybody ordered. Two mediums, one rare and one medium well, mine was the medium well. Out comes this huge chunk of meat that I know isn't for me because there's no way they could have cooked it to medium well. I figured it was the raw one. Everybody else's was like half the thickness of mine. When I cut into it blood basically poured out covering everything else on my plate. My husbands rare steak was more done than mine. The waitress took it back and I figured they'd just do a whole new plate but I was wrong. They put that huge thing into the microwave to finish cooking it. At that point I couldn't even get it cut and it was steaming hot. The green beans weren't the best. The main thing that was good was the mashed potatoes but everybody was done eating by the time my food came back and the waitress took my plate away before I could finish my mashed potatoes. I don't fault her she was a good waitress and the place was packed but seriously after my steak was done that way my dogs had a hard time chewing it and I went hungry that evening. read more

Terrible service ... very unwelcoming! We live on the Delaware shores and will spend our money there n also get friendly, Happy, efficient service there or anywhere other than this sad place! Being on an actual sandbar woulda been the best remedy for us rather than eating at that place!!! Our Food came out way late & we ate luke warm eats, only because we were hungry and as not to upset the bartender-- that woulda been the topper! She was already in such a dither & not helpful or accommodating one bit!! She was not a star-tender behind the bar at all!!! So disappointing when you are on a vaca & you feel like you wasted time at an establishment and didn't enjoy it one bit! Kind of a blows the mood- like completely!!!! We Will not return and will happily enjoy other places that want the business and treat you like customers... we will not return here!!!! Period! read more

Too bad I can't leave zero stars. This place was dreadful. We ordered crab and artichoke dip and what arrived to the table was canned tuna with cheese on top. No artichokes and most definitely not tuna. The "toast points" it was served with were pieces of bread cut in half. I should have sent it back but they were busy and I was willing to overlook that transgression. Our margaritas, which were the special drink of the night, were clearly made with the overly sweet bottled mix. Also noted they charged an extra dollar on the final bill to put salt on the rim. Pretty lame. Now onto the entres, my tuna poke arrived in a cocktail glass and was heavy bathed in sesame asian sauce. I found that odd how heavily it was sauced but upon reflection later realized that was to cover up that the tuna was bloodline and most likely past its fresh consumption date. This was proved by my stomach turmoil for a day and a half following having eaten a few bites. I did have the server remove almost a full portion from the table but was never asked why it wasn't consumed. My husband's crab cake, which was market priced, was most likely a frozen portion that comes boxed from Costco. My husband, who never complains about food, said it was awful and fries were sparse and not good either. All in all, this is the worst meal I've ever attempted to consume in my life! Normally I would have complained but felt it was easier just to pay and get out quickly. Heed my advice, go somewhere else. read more

The restaurant was clean and well decorated. It is not a big place. Don't go here at peak dinner times. If you have a problem walking up and down stairs, this place is not for you as there is a steep set of steps to get to it. We had to wait a half hour for a table. That was ok because we were there at peak dinner times and the bar tenders made every effort to accommodate us. The drinks were delicious. Once we were seated the waitress was prompt with our drinks. Our food came quick enough and was delicious. I got the blackened sea scallops with golden Yukon mashed potatoes. It was a bit salty and on the spicy side but still good. My husband ordered the stuffed flounder. He said that it was really good but it was not stuffed flounder. It was flounder with a crab and Dijon cream sauce. The night went sour when the waitress did not return to refill our drinks or collect our plates. About this time she started waiting on a party of 20. She neglected our table and the two tables behind us. Another waitress graciously waited on the other two tables. Again, we were forgotten. Another table was seated during this time, ate, and left. We were still left waiting. Although our waitress looked at us several times and saw that our plates were gone and our glasses were empty, she still continued to wait on the party of 20. When she finally came over, she acted as if she had completely forgotten us. She offered us dessert. We politely declined and asked for the check. She immediately produced the check and my husband tried to give her his credit card. She said "Oh you'll have to wait a minute. I have to get the other table their food." She proceeded to leave and get the party of 20 their salads and soup. It took her less than a minute to swipe my husbands card once she did accept it. I am totally understanding of the fact that this woman was clearly overwhelmed by the party of 20. What I don't understand is why we were completely forgotten when we were finished eating before these people even started ordering their food. If she could only wait on the party of 20, she should have given her other tables to other waitresses. We will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

We were looking forward to trying this place out while on our first visit to the Outer Banks. We got there a few minutes after opening. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the dining room. There were two hostesses in the front. The place was about half full with plenty of seating. The hostesses tried very hard to get us to sit at the bar. There were several tables by the windows looking out to the water which we were kind of hoping to have. I tried joking with them about how fast we are, which we usually are, but they were not having any of it. We were really hoping the one hostess face would not freeze the way it was during the whole time we were there. After we were seated for a few minutes we heard the bartender cursing about someone taking drinks. It shocked one of the waitresses. Our waitress was very good and took good care of us. We got an appetizer of scallops which came out as four very small scallops for around 14. I got the seafood platter of shrimp fish and crab cake. My meal was very good. The crab cake was on point the shrimp were good and the fish was cooked just right. Now this next part was our fault. My wife got the 10 oz filet at market price. We should have asked. It was a 44 dollar steak that should have been no more than 30. We got took on the price and learned a lesson. We got the peanut butter pie which was delicious. We will try them again and hopefully the upfront people and the bartender will have a better day. read more

This is my favorite Hatteras Island restaurant. Go there before it closes or changes hands. Well worth the wait, and there is almost always a wait, sometimes very long. Fried flounder and crabcakes are very good. Servers have always been helpful and friendly. Has a great view of Pamlico sound. Very family friendly. This is one of my family's favorite spots in Hatteras. They definitely have a prime location, located on the sound and up off the ground so the view is great. Unfortunately their food isn't the best. I had the shrimp scampi and it was a very plain dish. I also found it to be over priced considering how small the shrimp were. My mom and sister had the BBQ sandwich and enjoyed it. They did have good onion rings! Our server was fine - not amazing but not terrible. I think this spot would be great for drinks at sunset! read more

We are on vacation and stopped by for lunch. The staff are stretched too thin. The poor bartender was expected to tend a full bar, and their food and literally half of the dining room. Half! The service was awful but I don't see how it could've been better just to the sheer lack of service staff. The food was good. Excellent even. But, it was impossible to get a drink refill. As we were leaving, we tripped over a cord that was stretched across the front porch. I tried to get someone's attention inside to no avail. The cord was attached to some form of saw that was sitting in the rain? I don't know... while the food was great, they need more staff to work prime lunch rush. We won't be back next year. read more

Nestled on the Soundside in Buxton lies The Sandbar & Grille. Where a good portion of the northern Outer Banks are more touristy in nature, the southern Outer Banks on Hattaras Island seem a bit more local, a bit more laid back. The Sandbar is no exception to that. The building is large, probably one of the biggest in the area. But, the dining area? Maybe ten percent of the size of the building, up a large run of stairs. There's a huge wooden bar to the right and a smattering of tables throughout. Here's some advice: If you're going with a group smaller than four, you'll have a heck of a time getting a table. There were a few small groups, but, the majority of the dining room was large, twelve or more person families. Thankfully, I doubt there could ever be a long wait here. The service is blazingly fast, without being overbearing; there is no 'get in, eat it, get out' here. And the food is spectacularly average. It could be the worst I've had in the Outer Banks. Fortunately for me and you, dear reader, that's like trying to say you're upset because your favorite artist only played for ninety minutes at the concert you went to, rather than your other favorite who played six encores, and pulled you up on stage for a drum solo. In other words, despite being average, it was still pretty darn good. I'm a sucker for crinkle fries. Love them. When I was a kid, we called them "Grandpa's Fries" because my grandfather loved them, too. Seeing them brings back warm memories, and I'll chow down on them every time. Their Carolina BBQ sandwich was good; smoky and satisfying portion of chopped pork, was better without the more Memphis style barbecue sauce served with it. My wife ordered a pound of steamed shrimp, and enjoyed them, immensely. She said they were a bit on the spicy side, but still delicious. We paid about what we would back home for a much smaller meal, and left much fuller than we would have in good ol' Ohio. read more

I have loved the Sandbar even going back to the original location in Hatteras Village. Great fresh local seafood! I went to the Buxton location recently and everything out of the kitchen looked fantastic. I was in the mood for something fried, so ordered the Flounder dinner, was fantastic of course. Awesome view of the sound. I met the bartender and WOW he made a couple of awesome drinks. Try the Blue Marlin, you won't forget that one. During the season this place is going to be busy and they close off season as they should. I don't think they take reservations. My advice is to get there as soon as they open and enjoy the stay. The view is really something to take in and with the great food and awesome bar, it is a place you can hang for a while. It is nice that they do take out, my flounder was a to go order and was fabulous. I have dined at the sandbar many times and always received quality food, never a bad one. It is my favorite place to go while staying in Hatteras, give them a try you will be glad you did! read more

Usually the highlight of my dining experiences while staying in Frisco, definitely not this time. Two flat tap beers. Flies - lots of flies we had to keep swatting away. We were there 10 minutes after they opened and within the first wave of customers, but they were already out of the daily special. Blackened Tuna was hyper bland, as was the crab topping. Vegetable of the day (which has been rice and green beans as long as I've been coming thing) were straight out of a can and microwave. Cold, zero seasoning, really disappointing. Lastly we ordered two shots, and mine arrived in a glass covered in what I HOPE was dishwashing fluid residue. I mean, the interior was almost completely coated in something. It was visible from across the room. How the bartender or waitress didn't notice it is beyond me. Really gross. Should have taken a picture and sent it back. How this place is the priciest restaurant for 50 miles is beyond me. read more
