If I could I would give this place a 0. I can not express how awful the entire day was. The customer service we received the ENTIRE time we were there was despicable. The employees are disengaged, showing no interest in the guests. We booked a party for 2 hours. First of all, it would be helpful for those that have a special event booked given the advance warning if other special events are occurring at the same time. At our arrival time there was also a Santa meet and greet, Farmer's Market and Ice Skating ring that took up a big portion of the parking lot. We got there an hour early, but for our guests it was a stressor finding parking. Our entire party was onsite at 1pm for our 1:20pm start time. There was no communication for the delay by the staff. At about 1:40pm I saw no one was getting our group together. I went to an employee to inquire about their game. He was very apologetic, let us know the game ahead of us ran behind and they would be right with us as soon as everything was cleaned up and set up. I let them know we had a 2 hour slot/3 games and was worried about the timing. Two employees reassured me that I would be fine and the 2 hours would begin when they actually would start with the group. Which was fine, I understood and was ok with them adjusting the time. Kids played 1 round. We were asked if we wanted to pause for cake and food and I said no let them keep playing. When the second game ended the employee, informs me that his manager Mya told him they could not honor the 2 hour reservation because they are "fully booked". Instructed us that we had to leave. He was very sorry and kind but understandably I was very upset as that is not what I paid for. My son, who was celebrating his 10th birthday didn't even play, letting his friends go first thinking another game was to be played. The employee stated, "I noticed that and told my manager but she says we can't play another game." Mind you at this time it was 3pm. We still had another 20 minutes even if we were going by 1:20pm. Instead of wasting time going back and forth, the kids could have been playing. I asked to speak to Mya. At my first request she never came, completely ignored me. I went over to her where I was met with the worst attitude. No apologies. She took no accountability. After I explained to her that it was her staff that started our party late she offered another time that was 3 HOURS later that evening. How was I going to entertain 10 year old boys for 3 hours there? Use some common sense moron. I can not even begin to explain how awful she was. No service recovery. The way she was kicking us out was the way she should have kicked out the party that ran late ahead of us. There is no excuse for her behavior. The facility was also dirty. No garbage cans, the one they did have was small and full the entire time we were there. For the amount we were charged this is not what we expected. This company should be ashamed of its practices occurring in San Ramon. Please be aware and don't let this happen to your kiddo. They were so disappointed and sad. read more

Didn't even get a chance to play. Someone from our party told us they were running behind and that our reservations were moved to 6:15 and not 5:45. We get there at 5:50 (policy says to be there 15 min before reservations) and were told that we had to be here at 5:45 at our original booking. It just seemed very inconsiderate of our time. You want us to be early to sit there and wait but you can run behind? I asked for a refund but got credit... reasoning: our policy says if you cancel within 24 hours credit only. But I didn't cancel, they were running behind and we stuck to the policy of being there 15 min before. They choose when to follow their policy when it's convenient for them and haven't found a way to accommodate customers when it's their fault they're running behind. I will say Mya (manager on duty) tried to help as best she could. She was patient, kind, and respectful I assume it was out of her control to issue the refund. She did call later after to follow up that she called her DM so I appreciate her help. read more

1. Don't ever buy a gift card for here , we had 2 different gift cards that had 0$ balances when one was 100$ and the other was 200$ and another had 50$. When I was leaving I said "I still have a balance on 1 gift card because it was only 288$ for today and my gift cards were worth 350" "He said no I had all of them voided" !!!! So money on gift cards means nothing to them. 2. Gift cards can't be used at any location only the location there at 3. If you have issues with anything staff doesn't care 4. Management doesn't call back when you call 3 days in a row trying to figure out gift card issues 5. Staff doesn't listen to you when you ask for thing like can you turn the head sets down (it sounded like our party was SCREAMING when they weren't 6. Lack of direction from the staff The staff is what made the experience horrible we have been to the San Mateo location and it was fun we ran in to computer issues there but the staff was AWESOME and made it all better. read more

The only reason it's not one star is because a couple members of my party had a relatively cool experience. Poor setup/ communication about the environment: would have been nice to be warned about the noise level when we arrived. The whole set up seemed engineered to echo the screams and shrieks of the other players and there was nowhere quiet to wait. If you're regularly not going to start on time, provide somewhere to wait or don't hook us up so we can't wait outside. Maybe a pager situation where we can hang around elsewhere? That would have helped tremendously. -lateness: It seems ridiculous to have such a strict policy when there's no accountability for time on the side of the business -the service: aside from the girl who checked us in initially, who was fantastic, the people in the room- the person who equipped us and the person who collected the equipment- were inhospitable, rude, and acted like we were a chore. The person at the end who collected the props barely said a word to us and when asked about where to put an item just said "basket" and walked away. There were equipment issues and the person seemed to do anything except replace the equipment. I'm not sure if it was poor training or something else, but I didn't feel like any of us were in good hands -equipment: the most disappointing part of the experience. For the exorbitant price, you would expect professional equipment. One of our vests was falling apart and wouldn't zip, which led to very few sensations which created a lack of awareness in the game. The headsets hardly worked, and multiple members of our party could not hear the game, missed the tutorial, and couldn't hear much OTHER than the shrieking of the players in other rooms. I asked several times for help with the headset and the team member seemed annoyed. How are you supposed to enjoy an immersive experience if you can't hear anything or feel anything? Overall just incredibly disappointing. We were looking forward to this for most of the year, and in the end are just out almost 300 bucks and a headache from all the screaming. I suppose if the headsets worked it wouldn't have been so horrible, but waiting after stressing on getting there, waiting surrounded by echoing screams and thinking that you'll finally get a break when the game starts, and then just hearing that instead of the experience? Miserable. I won't be recommending this to anyone. This was the most disappointing (and expensive) experience in a while. read more

I booked it with my son and 3 other friends of his and all our first time. Well the staff told us to wear this specific color sensors then had us all remove them again because he made a mistake. Stopped the game twice because the kids were too loud screaming- who wouldnt when you are being chased by zombies. They were not saying any profanity or anything disrespectful. How can you enjoy being immersed when someone is trying to supress you. What a joke. We all left with a bad taste and never coming back. Had a very fun experience here a couple of weeks ago! Making reservations was very easy through the website. Went with a group of 4 in the afternoon. It takes a while to get everything set up, especially since my brother's gear wasn't working at first. However, they got everything fixed and we were ready to go! None of us had experience with a fully immersive VR experience, so this was REALLY fun. We chose the Amber Sky experience and that was thrilling and action packed (without giving too much away). Be warned: You WILL get hot and sweaty, since you're wearing quite a lot of gear (sensors, backpack, headset, vest). It is a super fun experience, especially with a group of people. It is a sensory overload, so if you're sensitive to loud sounds or somewhat frightening images (depending on the experience you pick), this may not be for you. They provide two free videos of our experience that we've rewatched several times because it gives us such a good laugh! Overall, it was a fun experience that makes us want to go back again! read more

The tracking and glitching was beyond bad. The Terminator Cinemax experience was orders of magnitude better and the same cost. After trying this It seems clear to me sandbox is just trying to do a cash grab with the VR buzz with an extremely poor quality tracking experience. My gun in the game constantly jumped around and my character would glitch and teleport around, sometimes going down onto the floor. It was extremely bad and unplayable. read more

If I could rate this place a zero, I would. I am absolutely appalled at the lack of professionalism and the quality of the service. I came with 4 kids (7 and three 10 year olds) plus my husband. Our reservation was at 7:45- and we didn't finish until 9:15...not because we had a great experience but because our equipment kept glitching. At one point, we had been waiting to play with all our gear on for 20 minutes. My 7 year old, who weighs about as much as the the backpack they wear, took off his gear. The manager on duty Greg, complained and said, "what is he doing! Why is that kid taking off his gear" and acted so irritated. When the glitches were their fault. I finally pulled my 7 year old out so the rest of the crew could Finish their round. None of their gear worked, we were stopped twice to replace batteries..absolutely absurd. Terrible experience that we cannot believe cost us $300. We played an hour late because the group before us kept pausing for technical difficulties. Game froze at least 10 times, we could not hear any of the sound effects because all you could hear was the screaming of players in other PODs. My sister got to play about half the time because her character kept freezing. Even our video shows the wrong characters. They offered to let us buy another game at 20% off (their normal, everyday promo) to "make it right". Manager made no effort to resolve beyond that and said she'd call by the next day which she obviously did not. I know I'll get the same cookie cutter response as everyone else has here...this business does not care but I'm posting still to warn others about the same issues fellow reviewers have, save your $300. read more

Mismanagement?? Incompetence? Or Both? Or something shady?? So picture it, Christmas, San Ramon 2022, I was trying to find "an experience" as my partner likes to put it for my family enjoy together. I was rather proud of myself when I decided I'd book a private session for our little family of three and then head over to the lot for a movie and dinner. It was the only day my partner was going to be able to be off this holiday week. It was supposed to be the perfect day! My daughter was SO excited for this and frankly so we're both her parents. 2 and a half hours before our scheduled time I received an email.... Not a call an email saying due to unforeseen staffing issues they were going to have to cancel our session and I should call in to reschedule. When I called no one answered. No one called me back either. After our movie I got curious and wanted to see if they were closed. Nope! Lots of folks were there having fun. Someone came over to help us, they rescheduled our time and sent us on our way. The day was ruined, my big Christmas gift for the family was ruined. I know things happen but I can't help but wonder what REALLY happened considering there were so many people there when we went there....... Maybe I'll give a better review after our experience maybe I won't.... They are going to have to change my mind. I'd love to be able to recommend this place especially since our neighborhood is walking distance to City Center. read more

I planned a virtual experience for my friend for his birthday. We were all really excited to play the new Deadwood Valley game. Unfortunately, we experienced so many technical issues. From the very beginning, my mic wasn't working, they were configuring the issue to check if it was a battery problem, unplugging and plugging in the mic set, and then finally giving me a new headset. At one point, I even suggested that I could step out of the game so that my other friends could play sooner, but luckily they were able to get it fixed after 10-15 mins in. For the first few minutes it went well, however, the game was constantly being paused because batteries needed to be changed amongst the players. It's understandable the first few times, but it definitely happened a couple of more times throughout the game. This distraction really takes you out of the zone and the realistic feeling that was expected. At the end, there was a surprise cute birthday scene of the players around in a decorated room with an adorable cake, which was such a delight, but the person who was supposed to see it, the birthday boy, could not even even experience this scene. All he was able to witness was the sound, and we even communicated in the mic that there were issues again. When they finally fixed his visual, he only had a few seconds left of the clip and the VR ended. There were 6 of us that night, and my assumption is that the more people there are in the game, maybe there's more issues that arise. We also picked a time towards nighttime. I'm assuming that most devices around that time were drained out of their batteries which was the result of having to change out the batteries multiple times during the game. I really think Sandbox has such amazing potential, and I was expecting to take my friends and family here, but I was really disappointed in my experience. I kind of felt embarrassed taking my friends here for them to experience so many issues and also feeling cheated out of their time. A part of me feels that there must've been peculiar issues with our particular VR experience. It's so hard for me to believe that what we experienced was normal. I am hoping that this review will be seen and that we can come up with another trial for a better experience or some other solution. read more

We had a very unaccommodating experience here in January. We had 3 out of 4 of our team members present at our appointment start time. We were told we could not start the game until the fourth member of our group was present. We let the attendant know that he was just parking the car and asked if we could just start getting our gear on which we saw from other groups was taking about 10 minutes. We were told no. Our fourth player arrived three minutes past the appointment start time. We were told that since he was late we would now have to reschedule our appointment for a different day. We told her we are parents of small children and had to hire babysitters to be able to come out here. She said there's nothing they could do and to come back another time. We couldn't even get a refund - we are being forced to hire babysitters a second time and come back out here for 30 MINUTES OF GAMEPLAY. The appointment time is much longer for gearing up and tutorials but in the end is only 30 minutes game play. Don't waste your time and money on this place. read more

Ugh, I wanted to love this place but the customer service is just awful. They have a strict arrival time with a 5 min after your time window. It should say a 3 min after your time window because when I showed up four mins after I was denied my start time. We even conceded that we would be fine with keeping our end time. I am pretty sure no one in this business has friends or family because if you have to drive or coordinate with anyone else 5 mins goes quickly. It would take one bad stoplight or parking on the wrong side of the parking lot to be 5 mins late. And it is not easy to find for people new to the area. They were easy going about rescheduling but that is about it. If the times are so strict they need this needs to be bold on every page of their communications. The only place it says this is if you click a link in one of the conformation emails. Why so serious? It is supposed to be fun. 5 mins is really outrageous. I think the honest problem was that they overbooked themselves and we were the brunt. All the rooms were full when we got there and it did not look like they could actually accommodate anyway. Also, be aware it is a very loud space. Everyone can hear everyone at the same time. read more

I had the most horrible experience here and customer service has been entirely unhelpful. For Christmas I purchased a number of gift certificates for Sandbox, which I gave to family members so we could go as a group of six for a fun date night activity later on. We booked a date and time that worked for us and arrived about 15 minutes early to check in and get ready. One person had placed the reservation and we assumed we could adjust it to utilize the gift cards when we arrived. After check in, no one came to get us so I flagged down an employee about 5 minutes after our scheduled play time and they informed me a server had crashed but we'd be starting in about 15 minutes, so I pushed back our dinner reservation and I asked about adjusting the form of payment and was told no manager was on staff but it should be no problem and someone would call me to adjust it the next day. Fast forward another 20 minutes and still no one had come to get us prepared for our session. When I checked back they told me they had no idea how much longer we would need to wait (mind you this is now more than 30 minutes past our reservation time), but we could go to dinner and come back later and walk right in. She moved our reservation to the last one of the night and said we could bump it up later. Hours later when we walked in we were told we would need to wait 45 minutes. But after walking around we saw that only one room was in use. After pointing this out, they were suddenly "able" to accomodate us immediately. We played, and game was fine but there were challenges with the the gear (we could hear people in other spaces loudly and headsets were a bit glitchy). I was again reassured when we left someone would contact me about settling up on payment but now nearly a month and countless phone calls and emails later I still have not had any progress on resolution. This place is run by children and a mess, if anything goes wrong there's little to no hope you'll get help resolving and it's really quite expensive for what you get. read more

*For those affected, similarly as those on here, you can have a dispute opened with your bank for not receiving services to get your money back if you did not receive the services you paid for! I have been 2x prior to my most recent visit, even recommending to others to go. This last time will be my last at this location. I paid for myself and another player to play the squid games game. The headset failed on me 2x. The first time, I raised my hand and nothing after a min or so (while the game was still going) it kicked back in. the 2nd time completely kicked me out, and I needed assistance. The instructions state, "Raise your hand if you need help." On the second time I kept my hand up, again, the game is still going, and in total, I missed about 2 games. By the time I removed my headset to see where my help was, I saw the lady playing on her ell phone and not paying attention at all. I walked over and startled her when I said "hey my arm has been up." She chastised me for not just yelling out I need help. Again, the directions state raise your hand. Perhaps if she was paying attention, this wouldn't be the story I have to tell. By the time she got me going, it was all over. I asked about a manager, and none were available. Notes were made, and it took 3 calls to only be offered 20% off. That's insulting for the cost. Maya (manager) said at first she had no idea what I was talking about, but once I stated some info, magically, she had some recognition of the incident. I was told to expect an email that I never received, even checking my junk/spam and nothing. Eventually, I called my bank and sent out a dispute for not receiving services I paid for due to only getting half of a session due to the equipment and employee failure. Perhaps if i decide to ever play these games again, I'll go to Emeryville and try them as San Ramon has let me down completely read more

Store staff Mira ( claimed as manager) is awful. I would never come to this store anymore. I made duplicate reservation for 4 people due to phone malfunction. I talked to Mira both on the phone and in person and try to cancel one reservation since it is only less than 24 hours, she refuse to cancel one for me, refuse to give me refund, refuse to give me information for customer service or any person above her. I finally fund customer service number through another store, able to cancel one reservation and get refund. I would never come to this store at all. read more

I don't know if we got a dud or what, reading through the reviews I was expecting some triple AAA level VR. We did the Deadwood Valley new Halloween Experience. The framerate was absolutely terrible. By the time you pulled out your weapon the zombies were already in your face, when you pull the trigger the bullet fires about 5 seconds later. It wasn't just one person's, it was the entire group. We couldn't hear each other in the in game comms, the person switched out everyones batteries for new ones and it did not help whatsoever. You are so much better off buying an at home VR for the priced combined of 6 people and taking turns. The only pro was the haptic feedback vest. Highly advise to skip out on this one. Not sure if the reviews are just for the novelty or someone was downloading games on steam because the amount of lag experience was horrendous. Even in the post video they provide you can see the lag that we were experience. read more

Kids were treated to Sandbox VR as a Xmas gift from Grandma. Made reservations for 6:15, showed up at 6, but due to their internal issues we ended up having to wait 80 minutes to play. With everything closing early at City Center this left us all extremely bored and my wife very frustrated as we were originally told a 20 minute additional wait. Completely screwed up our dinner plans, etc.. At $50+ per person for 21 minutes of VR play, there is NO value to the experience as we already have a VR oculus setup at home. Game experience is cool and the kids did like the game. However even my 9 yr old said the 'service sucked' We have played VR at numerous venues with the best being in Vegas and the Philippines. read more

Went with my family yesterday and we played deadwood valley. We showed up 15minutes early but ended up waiting for a little while as it was busy, which was fine with us. The overall experience was fun, we all enjoyed it and laughed and screamed a lot. Only thing I will say though, which is the reason for the 4 stars vs 5, was that in the middle of the game, one of the headsets ran out of battery and so the game was paused. Can't say enough good things about this place! We booked Sandbox VR for our CaliKid Burgers 'n Shakes company holiday party. Not gonna lie, I was a bit skeptical to book at first reading all the prior negative reviews, but everything went seamless for our event. From booking to day of event, all my questions and concerns were answered and I even got a call a few hours before our event time started to confirm the appointment and ask if they could assist in any way. We were greeted as soon as we walked in by their friendly staff and they gave us a rundown of how they thought the night should go for us in order to be able to use the allotted time in the best way possible. They even let us use an extra room for the first half hour because our party was large and they wanted everyone to be able to participate without having to wait a turn. In our two hour time slot, we had about 18 people in our group and most of us were able to play two to three games each. The games run about 30 mins long and they can be exhausting (in a good way) Be prepared to sweat!! We all played a round of Squid Games, then played Deadwood Valley and Seekers of the Shard Dragonfire. So much fun. At the end of each game they make you do a dance off. It's silly but it gets recorded and you get to keep the video of it afterward. Bex was our host for the night and man was she amazing! She really went above and beyond to make our experience a great one making sure she was attentive to our entire party and gave us the best recommendations for what games to choose and which ones would be suitable for our party. (We brought our 7 year old son along with us, so they made sure that all the games he played were the "family" version of the game). We all had the best time, it was such a great team building/bonding activity to do with our staff. Will definitely be back again! read more

This review pertains to the staff. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience for our childs birthday. We had a child show up 5 mins late while the rest of the group was in the tutorial. After initially being told the late child could enter (and having him put on the gear) they decided to allow entry. The manager would not come out and they kept sending out random folks some who said they couldnt understand why the child was denied entry and others who would would not explain why the manager would not come out. We felt terrible for the child, asked for and waiting for a refund for the 1 kid. read more

What an incredible experience! I was blown away by how immersive it was and would recommend to anybody.

Based on the other reviews, it seems like my experience mirrors that of a lot of other people. I went here once with my wife and it was a blast (hence the 5 star reviews) and everything worked near flawlessly. I then came back with my son and I had the same experience as many others--the system worked incredibly poorly. The Sandbox team had to stop our game at least half a dozen times to try and fix various glitches, but my set up in particular never worked close to right. My son said my character would teleport across the room and sometimes appeared severely hunched or folded in half (I told him I too had apparently turned zombie). The hardest part was my gun never stayed in my character's hand. For example, in the picture my gun is literally pointed toward the ground. Other times it floated above my head. Needless to say this made it virtually impossible to play. I tried to work with the team--I played in my socks because they thought the problem was my shoes, and tried to help any other way that I could--but it simply didn't work at all. I can understand that maybe it was an off night, but I somewhat expected they would offer us a raincheck to come back because the game play was so bad; however, they didn't. I then called a couple of days later and directed them to the video and asked if we could have a free game to try again (not even asking for a refund or to try a different game--only an opportunity to try the same game). The woman on the phone was not very happy with us, but begrudgingly said they would email us. I never heard back. Bottom line, the experience is really fun if it works, but it seems that's a pretty big if. And, it's quite expensive if there's going to be no guarantee of the game working reasonably well. read more
