A cozy restaurant! Not sure if some of the other reviewers caught them on a bad day or what, but we had no problem with the service. Everyone was very attentive and friendly. My husband and I recently retried Sandpiper after it reopened. Overall the menu has not changed much from the old menu. Pros: our server was excellent, the lumpia is a nice addition to the menu and my husbands pork chops were big and tender. Con: the baked stuffed shrimp was not worth the $28 - the shrimp were very small and the crab had a lot of filling. This dish was not even close to what it used to be. read more

Evidently this was not a good "eat out" weekend for us. While in the Northern Neck we took my parents to one of our local haunts for dinner. We've been going to the Sandpiper for about 5 years, so not our first trip in for dinner. No crowds on a Saturday evening at 5:30...partly due to the season and it was a bit chilly. Let me start by saying that the wait staff is always welcoming and happy to chat up their customers at any time. We sat down to a group in the back room cheering and flashbulbs flashing as a couple got engaged on the spot. (the Sandpiper, come on fella you couldn't think of something more romantic??) Let me start with the good stuff - the seafood chowder was creamy and full o f crab, shrimp and clams. Mildly seasoned the roasted red pepper soup was quite acceptable, but the star of the bowl were the incredible chunks of lump crab which were tender and sweet. The salad is always crisp and the homemade blue cheese dressing is one of my favorites. The main courses were as follows: prime rib - sent back and replacement wasn't any better-tough, inconsistent in doneness (I asked for rare and had a little bit among my well done-did they cook it in the microwave??), my mom's flounder was thin and soggy, my dad's salmon was fishy and overdone and my husband's shrimp were frozen not fresh. Needless to say none of us were pleased and there was plenty left on our plates. I am always happy to pay premium price for excellent service and equally well prepared food, but my wallet was screaming at me as I signed off on our check...."are you kidding me?" This is certainly one time I should have listened to my mom and made a great home cooked meal! read more

There are NO mistakes made at "The Piper"! Should something be delivered incorrectly it is fixed!! If you are from anywhere other than the Northern Neck OR are unfamiliar with the way service still operates in the original American Way you may find slim column to complain. Here at The Sandpiper you get the food you ask for! If you want a baked potato w 2 shrimp they do it!! If you want bread with your onion rings you get it! So very different from the elite chef disease in bigger cities where you are beholding to the way the chef sees it rather than the way you want it. I love the Sandpiper in White Stone! read more

The restaurant is improving. We have dined there four times during the summer and enjoyed our meals. The food preparation and quality have improved and, in fact some menu items are exceptional. I give high marks to their steak entrees and their seafood specials. Their pasta items need help (frankly, more emphasis on a wider seafood offering would likely be best). The service is the area of huge improvement. Class actors in the service staff...watchful, but not hovering...professional, but open to being salty...all create an enjoyable dining experience. It has been quite a while since I've eaten at Sandpiper - my circle of Irvingtonians had all agreed that it was no longer high on their list of spots to dine at for an evening out. So it was with great anticipation that we anticipated our first meal there under new ownership. We arrived early and the restaurant was pretty much deserted - there was one gentleman at the bar (guess the bar crowd gets their early start elsewhere) and possibly one dinner table was occupied. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and very knowledgable. And she was patient as well, which we needed due to some indecision on our part. It has already been said, not too much change in the menu. We ordered the fried onion rings - they were kind of strange - what was fried and served consisted of the outer rings only, dipped in batter and fried and stuck together by the breading/cooking process. The appearance was not very attractive and the taste seemed flat - perhaps more seasoning was required. I'll not be re-ordering this item. The Lumpia - egg rolls were great! I brought a folding bread knife from home just in case their old bread knives had not been sharpened however the one they gave me was able to do the job - if they've all been touched up, that's a good thing. Note: None of the fried food seemed to have been drained prior to plating - the onion rings, for instance, were practically floating in oil. I inadvertently dropped one on the white tablecloth and the amount of oil that was absorbed by the cloth was significant and highly visible. The bar service was prompt and my cocktail was perfect. Ambiance - it's hard to find a word to describe the atmosphere - the crisp white table-cloths on all tables were a nice touch. The huge water glasses at each place setting might have been more appropriate at a more modestly priced establishment. But the background "music"??? An FM radio station was piped in to our section of the restaurant, and presumably throughout, and we were treated to some DJ patter for a bit, followed by about 20 minutes of Beatles oldies, followed by interviews with what seemed to be female high-school students. The fish 'n chips entree I selected was great and in addition to the side salad it came with it was also served with Lima beans and a generous serving of coleslaw. The bread was replenished as needed. Overall - we enjoyed not having to cook; we enjoyed one another's company. But I believe this establishment is going to have to work a bit in order to establish a distinctive identity - one that matches its ambitious pricing structure. I will return! read more

Scores (out of a possible 5) Food: 3 My wife ordered the crab cake dinner ($22) and I ordered the ribeye steak dinner ($28). Her crab cake was meaty and it had good flavor, however, it was served only on the warm side. In addition, the potato she was served was small and the plate was bare. It was a rather sparse looking dish. I ordered my ribeye medium-rare and I got something more on the rare side. The searing looked good and the bleu cheese butter on top made for a great topping. Overall the steak had a nice flavor. The down side to the steak was the amount of fat on it. This was not marbling, but a lot of fat on the steak edges that should have been trimmed. The onion ring garnish was bland, but the mashed potatoes were excellent. Service: 2.5 A reasonable amount of water refills, but no follow-up from the waitress after the dish was served. The minute I told her we did not want dessert, she produced the check. Ambience: 2.5 We sat in a backroom, it had the interior of a trailer. Nothing special and somewhat tacky. Price: 2.5 It was about $68 with no drinks ordered. We felt that we did not receive a $68 experience in any way. A fair price would have been $55 out the door. Overall Value: 2.6 Average restaurant with expensive prices and a bloated reputation. Suggestion: Pay more attention to the quality of the food preparation and a more personable and attentive staff. I've been to The Sandpiper three times since I moved to the area. It's a bit pricy, you can wait a long time for a table, but the menu offers good food and good service. The crowd tends to be the retiree set from the area, and visiting family. The steak I had was excellent, as was the Osso Bucco my friend offered me a taste of. If you like standard American fare and seafood dinners, you would enjoy this place. read more

I was ready to give this establishment 3-stars until I read some other reviews and thought better. Good - The entrees (5 diners, all getting some seafood) were prepared very well but I thought they were on the expensive side for the ambiance of the resturant. Things that need Improvement - The place does not take reservations and for some reason (probably because this is a very small town and there are very few resturants to select) it was standing room only waiting for a table. The tables are covered with plastic table clothes and the silverware (I use that term loosely) looked and felt like it came from an army mess hall. Our server provided one small bagutte for the five of us. The house salad was very unimaginative, the dressing OK but served in a plastic cup. The wine list was OK but again pricey for the ambiance of the place. I would try other places before coming back here. read more

Pricey for what is served and the staff that serves it. We're in the area a lot and have always wondered about this little restaurant. Luckily we arrived right at 5:00 and were able to be seated immediately. The hostess that welcomed us was very friendly and that was nice. Now, onto the rest of the meal. Our waitress - Kathy - is LESS than attentive. Had to ask twice for straws. No bread was brought out with our salads - when clearly - everyone else had bread with their salads. We watched the other waitresses/waiters and saw how attentive they all were - ours always had to be hunted down - she liked hiding in the back when clearly she should have been in the front. She never cleared our plates - one of the other servers always stepped up to the plate for that. She never asked if we wanted refills. We were all drinking water - that was an easy enough refill! My daughter and I ordered one of the specials. Petite Filet with Crab. It had a little of the Mornay Sauce across the top and that was delectable. The steak that was supposed to be medium well was cooked VERY well done! Dry and not much taste. My husband ordered a fried fish. His portion was HUGE and he enjoyed it. My daughter asked for rice pilaf with her meal - her plate arrived with the twice baked potato. We'd already spent time hunting down our service on 3 occasions, all we wanted to do at this point was eat and get the heck out of there! Our meal was $105. Notice above I said we all drank water with our meal! Our "special" was $39 and should have been HALF that price! I don't mind paying $39 if the food oooohs and ahhhhhs me, but this was mediocre - at best! The reason I'm leaving 3 stars and not 1 star is because I noticed how friendly and attentive the other servers were. Lots know the locals by name - which is very nice. I figured we got the "one bad apple", but because of that and the price that goes along with a rotten apple - we'll not be returning!! The Sandpiper is one of our very favorite haunts and with the addition of the cozy bar recently installed, you can find locals there enjoying the casual, friendly service and excellent drinks most nights. Generally we have a drink at the bar, and are seated in the cozy back room for dinner, where service and food never disappoint. My husband enjoys the many local fresh fish specials, and my hands down fave is the blackened salmon with dill sauce. A welcome break from "Food Truck Menus" so embraced in many restaurants! The house made blue cheese dressing, the oyster platter large enough to share, the enormous lightly fried shrimp, the rice pilaf, the soups, the onion rings the size of tractor trailer tires--all just a few must-try items if you visit. The owner, Gina, and her wonderful staff go over and beyond to provide a great Dining experience! Her lumpia appetizer is a MUST TRY. Highly recommend!! read more

The locals know that they pour a very heavy drink. It's a little noisy, the people are really friendly, parking is kind of a bitch, you have to wait for a table if they're full but the meals are really good there's always more than you can eat. This restaurant was slam packed Wednesday with every table full and the bar packed and even still the service was excellent and the meal was delicious. It looked like on the 97° degree night it seemed no one wanted to cook at home, however the new owner, Gina Stump, who was the chef last night did an impeccable job. All of us were in impressed with not only the quality but the quantity. The waitresses were very friendly, professional, and patient. My wife and I are locals who have been infrequent visitors to The Sandpiper Restaurant, but that is about to change. We visited last night and had an excellent experience. The new floor-plan is open, light, airy, and friendly. The bartender obtained our drink order promptly and filled it within a couple of minutes. Our waitress, Dana, is delightful. She was familiar with the specials and made several recommendations. The seafood chowder was excellent, as was the salad as an appetizer. My wife and I both had the shrimp scampi, and the shrimp taste like lobster. We both had the mixed berry cobbler with ice cream. The cobbler was warm and tasty. Our bill was very reasonable and represents good value for the money. We are now regulars and recommend it to friends (and strangers). read more

Feels like sitting at a picknick table- complete with plastic table cloth and paper napkins. Water (and ice cubes) chlorinated to a degree where our taste buds could not tolerate it. STAFF: Friendly; however seems everyone likes to talk loud. FOOD: Way over priced, as well as over rated....... Appetizer of "Shrimp rapped in bacon"....$16.00. No flavor-bland. We received 4 shrimp ($4. Ea.) Menu indicated $8 for soup, we stated we were sharing the soup, so waitress said she was going to bring in separate cups since it equaled the bowl. Got the bill and she charged us $8.00 twice. Soup tasted awesome, however a Ridiculous price for an EXTREMELY SMALL PORTION. Very misleading. Oysters were fried perfect, but lacked flavor. The $36.00 kabob dinner delivered a baked potato, piece of filet the size of fifty cent piece, 1 mushroom, 2 cherry tomatoes, 4 shrimp, 4 nickel size scallops, an onion and green pepper quarter. Both entrees did come with a salad. Desert: Chocolate Kahlua was the best. In all, food was good, but the small portions and HIGH prices made this a disappointing dinning experience. read more

We got a recommendation from a local to try this place. Although the service was good and they were very friendly the food was mediocre at best. The thing that turned us off was the taste of the water and the smell of the dishes. I know that sounds weird but the water tasted like pond water. We love to stop for drinks and appetizers in the bar - staff is always friendly, and the app specials are usually fun, creative and delicious. Fish or soft shell tacos - to die for! Great soups, ridiculously good huge onion rings, wings are good too. We came for a full seated dinner when we had family in town - also great. Crabcakes were amazing, so were the steaks and pasta dishes. Wine list is small but has some good choices, and the beer selection is very good. Full bar as well. Totally worth a visit! read more

We have a second home in White Stone and love going to the The Sandpiper when we're "at the River..." It's pretty small with a homey atmosphere, but the bar is more contemporary and we like to eat there. Most importantly the food is great (especially the salmon!), the service is professional and polite, and you get a lot for your buck! read more

It was our first time to Sandpiper, and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, they were very accommodating and friendly towards us and our children, though we were seated at a table very close to the bathroom, which had a suspicious door chain locked inside. The Lamb Lollipop appetizer was yummy and a good value, and entrees were as well. I had the jumbo shrimp and crab, which was excellent, and my husband had the ribeye special which was also good. Service was friendly, but lacking once the dinner rush picked up. We waited 10 mins for the waitress to check on us, just to ask for our check. There are plastic tablecloths, but I'm not that picky so it didn't bother me. And they did have cloth napkins, not paper. We were happy with the meal, but I feel the kids meal should be a set price, maybe $5, not individually priced. We will return to the Sandpiper on future visits. read more

I had dinner at The Sandpiper tonight with several of my friends that only rarely got to see each other. Everything was over the top out of this world! We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Quickly after being seated our drink orders were taken and delivered. I highly recommend the cosmo and any other martini. They are served in a chilled glass and the left over is served on the side in a shaker. For our appetizer we ordered the soup of the day which was a curried carrot soup topped with homemade croutons and a HUGE order of hand breaded onion rings. After appetizers were gone our fresh salads came out with delicious home made blue cheese dressing and fresh ground pepper. Our dinner selections were the beer battered shrimp, a kabob and the bronzed ahi tuna. All our dinners were a very generous portion and came with an additional side. For dessert we all shared the home made bread pudding with vanilla sauce. We were all STUFFED and so happy with the friendly staff and amazing food that we will surely be back soon! read more
