It was a decent sandwich fresh and crisp tasting very friendly and fast service good place for a quick lunch.

We tried Tony's Sandwich King tonight as it was reviewed so highly on Yelp and we were in the mood for a great sandwich. We arrived around 5:30pm on a Monday evening, the start of peak dining time here in MN. The place was empty and we rang the bell for service upon entering. The decor, atmosphere, empty cooler, etc made me question if we should go somewhere else, but based on the high reviews and to not judge a restaurant by its coverings, decided to stay and try the highly recommended food offerings. The cashier was very friendly and helpful, answering all our newbie questions about the menu items. We finally landed on our order of a Meat Lovers sandwich, the Gangnam fries, the Gyro salad, and the Mac & Cheese bites - for a total of $33. Unfortunately, it was down hill after that. The tables, floor, garbage container, ceiling fans, lights - everything was filthy. We found what we thought to be the least of the filthy tables and sat down to hopefully await our now expected to be 5 star quality food to balance out the challenges here. The food arrived as follows - The Gyro Salad - came in a filthy bowl. Based on the rest of the restaurant being filthy, we did not believe that if we mentioned it, that they would even be able to find a clean bowl in back to replate the salad. On taste, the salad was decent. The Mac & Cheese bites - tasted like they came from a local school cafeteria. They were not very warm and the accompanying cheese sauce was generic and bland. The Gangnam Fries - came in another filthy bowl. Arriving later and confirming the earlier assumption of the standard of dirty dishes in the back. On taste - the Gangnam fries were tasty and had many good toppings. The Meat Lovers sandwich - came in a basket, lined with paper, so it didn't look dirty. The sandwich was ok, at least 4x the bread ratio to meat and I couldn't distinguish the three different meats that were supposed to be on the sandwich, so can't confirm that part. The fries were the best part of the experience here. They were well seasoned and after asking for the King's sauce, was able to try them with the raved about sauce. Unfortunately, the food did not turn the experience around here. I would almost say, if you want to try the food, get it to go as that may be cleaner. But I'm scared to even say that because based on the filth we could see, made me wonder and quite scared about what it's like in the back where the food is prepared - likely even dirtier. read more

Food gets worse and worse and price keeps increasing. I have been eating at Tony's for YEARS and I refuse to go there anymore. It started with switching the fries to these freezer-burned CRAPPY "seasoned" fries and it is all down hill from there. My entire workplace will no longer eat there. Shame on you Tony! read more

Welp, literally the only 2 things that I considered "misses" originally, Tony went ahead and changed. Now that's service! I've been back so many times, and it's been clean and orderly each time. I wasn't crazy about that chicken patty sandwich, and Tony totally agreed and removed it from the menu. Seriously people, this guy cares, listens, and empathizes! A truly great restaurant owner. Since my last review, he has also added a lot of new items - like the mac and cheese bites, srircaha-lime chicken, and gyro pizza. Tony tries to keep things new, interesting, and freaking delicious. I love the mac and cheese bites. The batter is delicate and the fact that it comes with even MORE cheese to dip in is a plus. And taking things a step further and throwing these babies on a burger (Mac Attack) is a plus plus. (Did I mention that my scale's battery died and I have no intention of replacing it?...) Another one of my faves is the New Orleans Fish and Shrimp sandwich. The shrimp in it are big and beautiful, guys. The fries (that come with basically everything), are still perfect. You can now get them with "King Sauce", which Tony says has 7 ingredients, and is both creamy and slightly spicy. With every visit I'm finding new "faves" so this list will be ever-evolving I'm sure. We were driving around Mounds View desperately trying to find the taco truck but alas...it was not in business today. "...Pizza...?" He reluctantly asked. "What about that sandwich place...?" I skeptically pointed across hwy 10 at a store front smattered in sharpie special signs. "Sure. Let's try it." He's a keeper. Walk in and a friendly face emerged from the back of the house. She went on to explain how some of the special sandwhiches were made...which were most pupular, etc. Most everything on the menu was $6.99 or less, and came with fries. I got the chicken gyro, and was thoroughly pleased. He got the Monster and also loved it. The portions were very generous and at an excellent price. Warm, fresh, toasty, overflowing. The owner was genuinely friendly and brought out samples of the new gyro soup he was making. He also brought us out a "king" dip he was experimenting with that had a hint of spicy buffalo. Awesome with the fries. He came out to thank us after we finished up and I announced we will be back again. Can't wait for the next trip back so I can try something else. Go. There. read more

I ordered 2 Monster sandwiches and one party melt for takeout, and the fries and sandwiches were still piping hot when we got the bag of food home. While we were waiting for the food, Tony brought out a sample of the grilled chicken for us to try (see, I told you they are nice!), I'll definitely be going back to have a sandwich made with that chicken, it easier and delicious. My husband saw this place on yelp and decided that we had to try it and I'm so glad we did. Located in a strip mall, I have to admit from the outside my expectations weren't super high, but once I walked in that immediately changed. Tony was at the cash register and immediately asked if we'd ever been in and when we said no gave us some background as well as recommendations. It was really such a nice touch that he went out of his way to make us feel welcome. We've been back since that first time and Tony is always the same - friendly, helpful and attentive. For the food I would highly recommend "The Monster" sandwich and make sure you get King Sauce for your fries to really step is up a notch. "The Monster" is a mix between a philly cheesesteak sandwich and a gryo. On paper it may sound like it's confused, but in practice it is absolutely fantastic. Somehow all the flavors work together and seem like they were made to be put on the same sandwich. My only small complaint would be that I always seem to make a huge mess when I eat this sandwich as it is filled with so much yummy goodness - but that is probably user error on my part. The fries that come with seem as though they are twice fried which makes them twice as good. I have no idea what is in the King Sauce (a mix between some kind of thousand island dressing and sriracha mayo perhaps). Whatever it is, it's great and partners with the fries perfectly. The one thing I have had that I have not enjoyed is their baklava. I was pretty pumped to try it as I have seen some rave reviews of it on yelp, but I was less than impressed. However, take that with a grain of salt. I am of Greek heritage and make my own baklava at home and don't really think that much can match up to my Grandma's recipe. That being said, I found the lack of nuts left me wanting something else - it was really just filo and honey which seemed to fall a bit flat to me. However, I bet those with nut allergies are appreciative to be able to eat baklava for once. read more

Tony's exhibits everything that I love about a small, locally owned business. Great food, reasonable prices, and a business owner who clearly loves what he does. We have come here for takeout a handful of times and we have never been disappointed with the food. Plus, it's so reasonably priced - usually around $6-8 for the sandwich and fries and they always have something on special for $4.99 The last time we were there, my husband went to order the steak and cheese sandwich and Tony recommended the Monster instead. The Monster is what it sounds like - a monster sandwich with steak and gyro meat on a sub roll. The monster got two big thumbs up. Other sandwiches that we have gotten are the grilled chicken (this was okay, nothing to get too excited about) and my usual go-to of the chicken gyro. I LOVE their chicken gyro. The meat is always perfectly cooked and the amount of sauce is always spot-on. I am a creature of habit, and because the chicken gyro is so good, I rarely stray. The fries can be a little hit or miss - sometimes they are perfect and other times they are a bit soggy. However, it's really nice that a handful comes with the sandwich because it's the perfect amount and you don't need to order them extra. We almost always split the fried okra and a piece of Baklava. As Kara mentioned in her review, the baklava is insanely good - it melts in your mouth. The fried okra order is huge for an appetizer and we never make it through the entire order. The remoulade is great for dipping though we generally wish we had ordered a second cup of it. However, as I mentioned at the beginning of the review, Tony is what makes this place really special. He has been working the register every time we have come in and he is always so warm and friendly. You can just tell he loves his job and he is passionate about the business. He greets regulars by name and always asks how your day is going. We really appreciate when he offers suggestions (because they are always spot on!) and we got hooked on the baklava when he gave us a free piece on one of our first visits. The only thing I would be critical of is the physical space itself - it's pretty underwhelming. However, that is not enough for me to take off a star. We wish Tony's was open on Sunday's because we're both having a serious craving right now! read more

The fries are better than nearby fast food restaurants and they have their own sauce (king sauce) to go with them. The bread on the sandwich is not like your other sub shops. Firm and chewy and absorbs sauce nicely. The only thing I would change about this place is to go with better napkins. The napkins hardly stand-up to one wipe of your mouth. I went here recently to pick up lunch with a coworker. It was so good! I got a gyro with fries and my coworker got "The Monster" with fries. We got the King Sauce with it. There were no other customers inside which was surprising to me considering it should have been the lunch rush. I hope more people start going so that this place stays in business. Because the food was amazing! My gyro was delicious and fresh and my coworker loved her sandwich. We're still talking about it weeks later. Food is prepared to order so it isn't fast food, but it didn't take overly long either. I thought it was speedy enough for the freshness and quality. Prices are also very low for what you get. I went in at 4pm and no one was there, customers or staff. They do have a bell to ring though. The lady was nice enough.. The place didn't inspire me to want to eat. I wouldn't call it dirty but I wouldn't call it clean either. That being said I've eaten delicious meals at run down places before so I tried the chicken blt. I paid extra to get cheese on the fries. So it was a little over $8 for the sandwich and fries. Was pretty fast in and out. The fries weren't anything special and they forgot my cheese. The sandwich had what looked like Turkey bacon on it, which is ok but I probably would have gone another way if I had known that. The lettuce wasn't very fresh but the tomato was ok. So start this when we walk in the door... place is the definition of "hole in the wall" the look on my wife's face was like "remember this is your pick!!!" But I always like to try new things, so hey some times you win others you loose! Boy was she wrong with first impressions!!!! I remember when this location used to be a subway, when you are feeling like treating yourself to an unhealthy and yet amazing tasting sandwich, this is worth it.
