Love it! From 11am - 1pm they have a lunch special for $3.99 where you get a classic deli sandwich and fountain or canned drink. I get that and a bag of kettle chips for under $5! Their tuna is amazing, way better than Cheese 'n' Stuff. Also, when you order avocado on a sandwich, they give you MAJOR avocado chunks. There's 3 things about this place that keeps it one of the best sandwich places in downtown Berkeley. It's super cheap, tasty, and fast. The downside is that this place is TINY so you should probably just take your sandwich and eat it elsewhere. You can't beat the lunch special here. For $5.00 you're going to get an awesome cold sandwich that will fill you up, your choice of chips AND a drink. Their muffins and pastries are also about a $1 cheaper than all the other places around in downtown Berkeley so if you're frugal this is the place for you. While this sandwich shop is affordable, it really does come down to 'you get what you pay for.' If you want a cheap, mediocre meal then Sandwich Zone will do. I've ordered from this place a couple of times and gotten the turkey and avocado sandwich. Add a few more bucks and get a combo with Dirty's potato chips (brownie point!) and a can of soda. I wish they had some kind of sauce they put on their sandwiches.... something that would kick up the flavor of the sandwich a little bit. I work right next to Berkeley City College and have recently started touring the "muffin scene" in downtown, frequenting the little counter-order coffee/lunch shops--so far, K's Internet Café, Nuha's Café, Fertile Grounds, and Sandwich Zone. Sandwich Zone has absolutely the best muffins and pastries, and easily the lowest prices of all of them. The others charge at least $2/muffin (most charge more), whereas the Zone has them for $1.75--and the taste doesn't even compare, Sandwich Zone is just so much better. I haven't had a chance to ask if they make their own pastries or if they contract out, but they are at least the only ones in downtown that taste like freshly baked/homemade. The Raisin Bran has black and gold raisins and is super moist, not overwhelmingly "bran-y." The Lemon Poppy Seed is the best Lemon Poppy Seed I've ever had! I think it even has some very fine lemon zest baked into the top. Everything else I've tried there has been equally fresh, moist, and really distinctly flavored. The family that runs it is so sweet, and even though in the morning you're competing with impatient crowds trying to catch the bus to campus, they always take the time to acknowledge, smile, and thank you. read more

For a lincoln I can get a sandwich, chips and a soda from 11-3p (may not start at 11, but definitely ends at 3). They are essentially like your home kitchen away from home. Nothing special, but perfect if you didn't pack your own lunch. I'd recommend either the pastrami or turkey on dark rye with provolone, mayo, mustard and lettuce. read more

Super great value. Normally get the Veggie with Avocado but just had the Chipotle Dagwood. Nice sandwich for the money and the ingredients seem high quality. They've also got cookies for about $0.50. The reason I came into the store was because I saw a sign that said they had a $4.99 special for sandwich+chips+drink. I came into the store placed my order with the intention of eating in, only to have the Asian guy at the cashier annoy me to park my bike outside. I told him they didn't have any "parking spaces" for bikes outside and then he just replied with a brief, "Just move it outside." I was like fine, "I'll just get it to-go." I go to the drink machine, only to find that the ice ran out. Had to get somebody to fill my cup with the ice sitting behind the counter/drink machine. Took my sandwich elsewhere to eat. This is probably one of my regular go-to places for lunch. The location is prime, right next to Berkeley perimeter/51B, grab a sandwich then hope onto the bus to class. I love their lunch special. With only 5 dollars you get a large sandwich, a drink, and chips! It's a great deal and I am a huge fan of their chip selection. It's not the generic chips like Lays, cheetos etc but they have Dirty chips, which are heavenly! Dirty chips: try Funky fusion. You might be skeptical because no where on the wrapper does it explain what this flavor is or might taste like, but you wont regret it if you do. Sandwiches: I usually go with Dutch Crunch for my bread, but there are occasions when the bread was too hard! Therefore, opt for the sweet roll if you want something similar. Service is ridiculously quick, and you can just use the paper/menu thing to choose what you want on your sandwich. No messed up orders or miscommunication. Thats always a plus. read more

It's decent. You can get a decent Veggie Deluxe for $5.50, but the lack of sauces/spices puts it on the blander side, and it's not customizable with additions, besides the bread. Sandwich Spot's equivalent, the Shattuck Express, for $1.50 more is about 40% more massive both due to larger roll size and larger quantity/packing density of contents. And then there's the flavor and customization: they have the sauces, dressings, jalapeños, etc. you can add for free. read more

Awesome sandwich joint. Great prices, great sandwiches. And they've figured out that letting customers check off boxes on order slips is faster and more accurate than having the cashier copy it down! (you can still order in person if you're old-school). Only gripe is that the restaurant is pretty cramped... boxes all over the place and only three tables (unless you hike upstairs, which is a bit ghetto). But their food is good enough that they should be able to move to a more decent spot pretty soon. read more

I have passed by this place hundreds of times on my way to the gym or to work if I catch the bus downtown. A lot of my coworkers grab salads and sandwiches from this place all the time and they always look (and smell) delicious. I finally made time to go there and I was not disappointed. We went at 12:50 pm and there was no line. Our entire order was completed in under 5 minutes, which was great especially at the tail end of the lunch hour. My boyfriend and I both had the Chipolte Dagwood sandwiches which were absolutely delicious and only cost $6. Everything on the sandwich was fresh, and the chipolte sauce had a nice flavor. The Sandwich Zone offers a wide variety of chips to choose from, including the "Dirty" Kettle Cooked Potato Chips which are awesome. I also noticed that they have a lot of bagels and baked goods to choose from, which all looked fantastic. The only real downside is that there is a lot of boxes stashed everywhere in the restaurant, which makes the place look cluttered. We took our sandwiches to go, so this wasn't an actual issue. It looked like there were a lot of tables to sit at upstairs if you chose to stay, which is good. Overall, I wish I had tried this place sooner. I highly recommend the Sandwich Zone for a reasonably priced (and yummy) breakfast or lunch. read more

Best place to get a sandwich because it only costs $3.99--no tax! Add a dollar for a small drink and chips! Choose from your typical sandwich add-ons. I recommend the dutch crunch bread if you plan to save your sandwich for a couple of hours, otherwise it could get a little when you are ready for it (i.e. wheat, though it's the healthiest). This place has a pretty large selection of sandwiches, the two that i've tried are very good. the problem with this place is that it is in the middle of down town berkeley and thus getting there is kind of a hassle. although it is possible to find parking around there. the interior is pretty small and can get kind of cramped. However the superior quality of the sandwiches brings this place up to 4 stars. If you are already around the area and in a group of 3 or less, this place is perfect. I would go back if I'm around and already parked. If you haven't tried it, I would say it is worth the hassle to see how good it is. read more

There's something about sandwich zone that I really love. It has a similar feeling to montagues on south side where the employees are incredibly friendly and I always leave with a smile on my face. Another thing they have in common is that they both have delicious Dutch crunch bread which is by fat the most delicious thing to eat a sandwich on! Sandwich zone has become my new regular spot for several reasons. First, it's near all of my classes on the west side of campus so it's my new treat after a long day of work. Second, I prefer the portion sizes here compared to the massive sandwiches at other berkeley eateries. For me they're the perfect meal, even sometimes between meal, size. I'm always satisfied without feeling stuffed. Finally, you just can't beat the price. At the time of this review they are using a service called slyde. Because of this I can get a sandwich an drink for just over three dollars... I really don't know anywhere else where this is possible! This place definitely caters for people taking their food to go so there are only a few small tables. But they're generally empty do if you really want to eat there you definitely have the option. These sandwiches have a special X factor that cannot be replicated at home. Sure, they use store-brought sliced bread and what seems to be off the shelf ingredients. But, there is something unique and special about the ratio and seasoning that makes their sandwiches so good - it's like they have it down to a science. I have never had a bad sandwich at the sandwich zone. I especially recommend the Chipotle Dagwood or the Green Giant (which surprisingly is not that big of a sandwich). read more

My bus stop is in front of Sandwich Zone. I smell their bacon every damn morning. Dammmmmn it. Some mornings, I get the cheese, egg, bacon muffin. MMMM. Very satisfying if you miss breakfast and stand in bacon smoke :D Their sandwiches are also really cheap and not that bad. True, their dutch crunch is nothing compared to Grub-N-Go's, but for 5 bucks, I can get a sandwich, drink, AND chips. No tax. Man, that's a steal. This place is a gem! I love Sandwich Zone so much that I'm a regular and am on a first name basis with the owners and their kids. The owners are sweet as can be and the food is excellent for the price. They are always willing to personalize your sandwich, or breakfast food, or anything else you order. Also, the other coffee places around (Starbucks and Tullys etc) can't compete with the coffee they have here. Sorry to all you Starbucks and Tully's connoisseurs but Sandwich Zone has better coffee. One thing to keep in mind, they do get pretty busy during the 12:00 hour from all the students that have found this cheap lunch spot so plan accordingly. They have a pretty efficient team though and they'll have you out of there pretty quick. There are a couple tables downstairs and about 6 tables upstairs. And for those that don't know they offer local office catering too. Hope you all enjoy as much as I do! read more

Unfortunately most of the time I like this place. Their sandwiches aren't bad and the coffee is decent. But today I wanted a breakfast burrito, and since the menu that had all of the ingredients listed for it did NOT in fact say it came with sour cream, I went for it and didn't ask for any modifications. So I was pretty upset when I took the burrito home, took one bite and almost gagged, quickly realizing their menu is full of LIES, as the burrito was practically nothing but sour cream. Now I'm down four dollars and stuck with food I can't eat. Awesome. read more
