I'm new in town and hadn't been to the dentist since prior to the pandemic, so finding a new dentist felt daunting. Sandy Dental is close to my house, so I decided to try it out despite the mixed reviews. I'm so glad I did! The front desk receptionist was SO sweet and thorough. A real gem. The technician who took my X-Rays was very kind, took time to explain what she was doing, and was extremely patient. Dr. Farzad Pirayesh was the real MVP though! He took the time to talk to me about my dental history, concerns, and made very pleasant, non-cringe small talk. He was great! He talked me through his findings and a plan to watch the minor concerns he noticed. Plus his cleaning was very gentle and he stopped regularly to check in and make sure I felt ok. I'll definitely be coming back in 6 months -- the location couldn't be more convenient! read more

I had been looking for a dental clinic for my disabled son and saw that the clinic offered sedation, which my son needs to have x rays and cleaning done.. I called the office and discussed my sons needs and was told there would be no problem. My son is in a wheelchair and was told they had a ramp to access the building. When I arrived and took him up the ramp, we encountered french doors that were locked and blocked with medical equipment. I had to call the office to allow us into the building. After completing paper work, we were seen by the hygienist, who made an effort to do x rays. She was very nice and apologized that she was unable to accomplish. When I mentioned my son needs sedation, she left and got the Dentist. When the Dentist entered the room, he immediately said he was unable to treat my son and refused to exam him, as the hygienist suggested to him. read more

It's a medium sized, single level craftsman converted into an office. It sits behind a manicured lawn and is nicely maintained. The front sitting room is clean and adorable. The pride and care of the owners and those who work there are apparent. When I sat down, the dental assistant made me comfortable and it didn't take long at all to see the doctor. When she came in, she was mild-mannered and gentle with the cleaning. I go in next week for a filling and I'm actually looking forward to it. possibly one of the worst dental clinic in the Portland Metrõ area. This clinic lack the organization, from doctors to front staff. Fail to communicate clearly to patient of treatment plans and pre-auth approval from insurance. For example: treatment was not organized. no prioritizing of what urgent and not urgent when it come to patient oral health. Xray indicate multiple teeth in need of extractions but fillings and cleaning is recommended. And when insurance approved for extraction, this clinic fail to disclose or communicated with patient. I waited more than 6mo. Called thêm back only to confirm dentist had denied the procedure because dentist doesn't do root tips extraction? which is super infuriating. how are they still practicing dentistry if you can't do a simple extraction? Front staff complete incompetent of protocols and insurance coverage. they need to be trained thoroughly. I wouldn't recommend this clinic to anyone. Update: needed an emergency tooth fixed so I went back and got Dr. Vu. This one also fell out and had to have the female dentist replace it. That makes 3 fillings he gave me that fell out and 0 that fell out once the young female dentist worked on me. Time to retire sir! I got a filling by Dr. Vu and it fell out in a week. That had never happen to me before, when I went back to get it replaced he was sure I did something wrong, like flossed wrong (I hadn't even flossed-- but he wasn't hearing it). He didn't use any anesthetic to drill and replace the filling. Then a week later THE FILLING FELL OUT AGAIN! I was so mad I demanded a new dentist. Dr. Ahn Nguyen seems much more knowledgable, friendlier, and her filling hasn't fallen out. I don't have many choices with my health care provider, I wouldn't go back if I didn't have to. read more

I could not agree more with Lazer's review below, except that the dentist is Dr. Vu, not Dr. Wu. Dr. Thuc Vu is his name. Bad bedside (or table-side) manner; rude. Plus, all their equipment is very outdated (felt like I went back in time with the x-ray bites) and the waiting room is all scruffy and dirty. My insurance had changed this last month, and now I have basic dental coverage through Healthshare of Oregon. I had a tooth that had broken off at the gumline while I was eating last night and I was SO dreading the idea of having to go do a walk in at the Russell Street OHSU Dental school, where I most likely would have been waiting several hours to even be seen. This wasn't a major emergency per say, but I didn't want an infection so I was told to come here by my insurance and was extremely impressed. I called them at 10:30 am and though they were booked, they still took me as an emergency extraction for 2:30 this afternoon. The entire place was extremely friendly: front desk staff, the dental assistants and even the dentist who I saw who performed the extraction. He was knowledgeable about my health issues and my medications I take and made sure I had enough shots in my gums to numb the pain. Have only had my wisdom teeth pulled out as a kid, and I didn't feel a damn thing. They even booked me to come in for a regular exam for the following week, which NEVER would have happened at Russell Street...one could have waited several weeks or a few months. Glad that I found this dentist and feel happy knowing that Russell Street Clinic and it's grumpy front desk staff will be a far away last resort. I highly recommend this place. read more

Absolutely worst dental experience ever. The male Dentist, short rude male, last name started with a B. He was super RUDE right off the start. Insulted my insurance. Then INSULTED me. Raised his voice when I explained they were closed on Sunday and I tried to get in as soon as I could. He just kept LAUGHING at me telling me I waited to long. He then immediately stuck a needle in my gums and VIOLENTLY moved around as he was UPSET about something. As I tried my best not to scream in absolute horrifying pain, he then yelled at me and said stop moving. Usually an experienced dentist would numb the gums before sticking a needle in and moving it around so violently and with such force. He could bearly get the tooth out, I'm not sure if he was just a new dentist with no experience or just having a terrible day, but he took it out on his patient. He then throw gauze in the back of my throat and said dont smoke for a week as he stormed out the room. HE WAS THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL AND HORRIBLE DENTIST IVE EVER COMR ACROSS in my 35 years. I'm talking to lawyer to see what I can do about the extra cuts and scars in my mouth the Negligent Dentist did to my mouth. It's like he purposely stabbed my mouth in other places than my infected molar. HIS ABUSE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and I will do everything I can to make sure this dr has this incident on record to protect other patients from his abuse. Hopefully he will lose his license to practice as he was THE WORST DENTIST IN THE WORLD. The front staff was great. Just that dentist was a nightmare. See you in court. read more

I went to Dr. Pirayesh because my husband did and had a good experience- he requested composite fillings and the dentist did that for him without extra charge even though they were supposedly not covered by insurance since they were in the back. I needed the same thing- fillings in my molars. Because I have an autoimmune condition that affects my mouth, my PCP strongly cautioned against mercury amalgam fillings. Instead of doing the same thing for me that he did for my husband, the dentist refused to fill my molars with composite and said that I could not have the wisdom teeth removed either- that I would, in his words, just "have to wait until they rot out of your head." In checking with my insurance, I confirmed that the composite fillings and wisdom teeth removal would have been covered. It seems that my husband received better treatment because he appears to be the same ethnicity as Dr. Pirayesh and I do not. I have not been able to bring myself to go to the dentist since and I just must say shame on you Dr. Pirayesh! read more

Dr. Pirayesh is highly recommended!!! He is honest, caring, and friendly. He is one of the few dentists who would actually perform teeth cleaning service to his patients. I've written so few reviews but this dentist deserves accolades! Dr. Kim is a new addition to the team at Sandy Dental and is worth his weight in gold! Even with my Obamacare ending soon, they accepted me as a new patient, and expedited my work quickly: a full exam, cleaning, and 2 appointments to take care of fillings all within 2 weeks!! Excellent work in localizing anesthesia so my whole mouth wasn't numb all day, and I never felt any pain whatsoever! I have dentophobia (fear of dentistry) Dr. Pirayesh is by far the most caring and gentle dentist I have ever gone to. It doesn't matter what kind of treatment you are getting he will stop several times and ask how you are doing and if you are in pain. He will explain exactly what he is doing and why. I had a deep cleaning done today and he had to numb my mouth several times with a needle and I swear I never felt one of them. When my 10 year old's appointment was over, she asked me outside if it was her imagination or was Dr. Vu very rude, even obnoxious, and I told her I really wasn't sure, but maybe, probably. Same thing during the second visit and it was pretty obvious, she was right. He also seemed lacking in self-confidence, even sort of defensive .. it is hard to explain. I mostly nodded my head and exchanged glances with my daughter. They couldn't find the X-Ray sent to them by another provider because it was locked in someone's user account. Then they took X-Ray's of the wrong teeth. You get the idea. I was dumbfounded by the experience and more fully grateful for my past dentist that retired. I opted to not return there. My daughter asked me to promise never to go back there. I never heard her say a peep about a dentist in the past. The staff at the front desk and dental assistant were very friendly. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this review rises to the level of a public service. I chose 2 stars because 3 stars was too much (it's not "A-Ok") and 1 star seemed too low for someone without the kind of experience "June M." noted in a comment. We never got to the part where we let him do work on us. I have no experience with the other dentists at this clinic. While the clinic itself looks very bare bones on the inside, fancy amenities are not critical to me, though I can see some people may prefer the classic nicer waiting rooms of many if not most dentists. read more

I have never written a yelp review before, but had such an unbelievably bad experience here with Dr. Vu, I had to write. I booked an appointment with the understanding that my primary goal was a cleaning, and I am moving out of State in a couple of weeks. They said no problem, I'd get a cleaning done. After waiting for over a half hour (which I can handle), I was met with literally 25 minutes of x-rays from a super old machine. Then, Dr. Vu entered, scraped at my teeth for 5 minutes, basically rolled his eyes and laughed when I had the audacity to ask him "do I have any cavities?" And then informed me I would not be having a cleaning, because there was no time. I told him that was the reason I was there, and was moving soon, and his words were: "well, that's your problem!" I had a bad experience with Dr. Vu. Unfortunately, he was difficult to communicate with. He seemed not only disinclined and dismissive in answering legitimate questions I had about my teeth and oral health, but to make it worse, what little reply he gave was very difficult to understand, due to his heavy accent. Typically I do very well when people have accents, but his was unusually heavy. I felt that he was brusque and impolite...dismissive is the feeling I got, as if my questions were unimportant. His attitude felt old paradigm, in the patriarchal sense. No, thanks. This is 2015. In addition, the filling I received feels bumpy and misplaced. I will not be returning. read more

DONT GO HERE. The desk staff are very nice. However, Dr. Wu is very unprofessional, and has very poor technique. His "chair-side manner" is rather atrocious - he's rude, plain and simple. I had a simple filling replacement in my front tooth from Dr. Wu. Although the color matching was good, I left the office with the filling being very rough, like fine sandpaper. i thought after a week or two that the surface would simply smooth out on it's own. It didnt'. So, I booked a time for a finish polish on the tooth with Dr. Wu. Dr. Wu was upset when I came back, and didn't want to even check out my tooth. He did so begrudgingly, and said it was simply fine and that my expectations were too high -- I have had many fillings and I've NEVER had one that is rough like this! All of the other fillings in my mouth are smooth like tooth enamel, not rough! Plus, the original filling in the tooth was smooth, but the replacement by Dr. Wu was NOT. -- Why couldn't Dr. Wu make an equally fine filling? Perhaps because he cant! In my opinion, he does not have the expertise or patience, and his rudeness and lack of professional treatment of patients is horribly apparent. DON"T use Sandy Dental, and especially don't have Dr. Wu as a dentist - he isn't good at his craft and needs to move on to things that make him happy, as it seems working well with patients and being a dentist are not his forte. read more

The staff is very friendly and make sure you're taken care of completely before you leave. My family has come here for our dental care for almost 15 years. We have not only never ever had a problem or complication, but in fact find the dentists here to go above and beyond the call of duty in dealing with pain and dental phobias. I'll never forget the dentist who removed my daughter's wisdom teeth without any tears, freaking out or fuss -- unprecedented. Seriously. Just went in today 12-3-15 and I've never had an appointment like this one. I felt sketch the moment I saw the building. The front desk ladies were nice, but as soon is I stepped into the back it all started from there. The x rays they took of my teeth seemed super old school and the plastic they stick in your mouth for the x rays was digging into my mouth on the inside causing pain. As soon as the Dr. Walked in and got started on my mouth it all went down hill from there, Water was splashing all on my face, the doctor made me feel like I wasn't able to ask questions. Not very social or even good at giving good descriptions as to what's wrong with my mouth situation. They gave me very short answers not letting me understand what the next step is. It was basically a get in get out appointment. I was not satisfied at all and I feel like I didn't get the service/answers that I needed. They put a filling in my mouth and it caused tooth sensitivity. I felt like I was being handled by a trainee. Didn't seem professional at all to me. I'm not one to complain but I've never been to such a lousy dentist office. As soon as they "finished" their job with me all they said was ok we are done here have a good day, and walked out. I went in to get my wisdom teeth checked and had told them I was in pain and they didn't even give me a prescription medicine to ease off some pain at least. I'm sorry but sandy Dental PC is not a good place to go to. read more
