If I could give 0 stars, I would. We are traveling in the area, ordered food to go, based on Yelp recommendations. Our order came to $43, I tipped $4 for the takeout order. There were no plastic utensils. I asked, the manager (maybe owner), he said they don't give utensils. I looked at him like he was crazy. He reluctantly brought a small spoon/knife/fork/napkin set for 1 person. He basically said he was doing me a favor and that's all he could do. I wish I could take my tip back and give 0 stars. Yum!! I've only been here for a sit-down meal once, and that was pretty good, but I really only go here for the buffet at lunch, because it's only $7! The buffet is usually the same thing everyday; sometimes the dishes change (mango chicken vs. chicken tikka or something). The staples for me are the tandoori chicken and the naan. The naan is nice and fluffy and the tandoori chicken is really moist. There are always a few different curry dishes, a potato dish, rice and salad. I love their onion chutney and mint chutney. I am in love with this place and always look forward to their lunch buffets since it's only $7.95 per person. I believe it's everyday from 11:30AM to 2:30PM, which is a great time on the weekends since you can sleep in and just start off with Indian food. They have about 5 to 6 main dishes along with your choice of naan and rice which is really great since once I sample just a little bit from each, I'm already stuffed. They also always have a dessert each time (I think they vary between 3 to 4 desserts), and my favorite are the ones that kinda look like brown sugar cubes (I forgot what they're called). They also have salad out, but I rarely ever get that since I just want to go straight to the Indian food. I've come here a few times for dinner as well, which although is a little pricier, still a great decision since this is when I can get my lamb dishes (they never serve lamb during the buffets, only chicken and vegetable dishes). The last time I came here, I got the lamb saagwala which was delicious and my friend ordered the chicken curry. I thoroughly enjoyed both when I tasted the dishes. (Honestly, they're both covered in so much sauce that I can't tell the difference between them that much, I only know they're both great) My only complaint with dinner is that they serve way too little rice with the two entrees so we ended up having to get another dish of rice which cost an extra $2.95. I didn't think the chicken pakora was anything special though since it was kinda just like overpriced chicken nuggets. The owner of the restaurant is also always really friendly and she really thanks you for supporting her restaurant every time you go in, which I really appreciate. She even helped me put some of the side dishes and desserts together during the lunch buffets since I wasn't sure which sauce went with which dish and she would explain what each dish was made up of if I asked her. My only complaint with the service is that usually, it seems a little understaffed so they don't refill my glass of water as often as I'd like (especially since some of the dishes are spicy). I will definitely be coming back many times to come. UPDATE: I dropped a star (from 5 to 4) only because Mehak actually is kind of better now...IDK when I noticed the difference but Mehak has more food choices and usually seems fresher...however I do still very much like Sangam and don't think Sangam is ever a bad choice. read more

Loved Sangam! During a visit to Ithaca, my friend and I visited for the buffet and it was delicious! Much spicer than the buffets in Syracuse, the food was so good. A nice selection of veg choices with a couple non-veg chicken dishes reminded me of food that I had while in India. We got there early for lunch but it filled up quickly as classes got out near noon and the place filled with mostly Indian students. I need to figure out more reasons to come to Ithaca just so I can visit again. read more

I'll admit that I was turned off by the look of the place from the outside. Inside isn't all that better - sketchy is a good word for it. As far as the food goes, it's okay for Indian food. I'm no connoisseur, but everything was edible, tasty even, and your body suffers no ill effects.* If you're coming from campus, it's pretty much your only choice for Indian. I was excited to try Sangam after reading some of the positive reviews here. When we want good Indian food, my boyfriend and I usually travel almost an hour to India House in Liverpool. We hoped that Sangam would serve as a closer substitute, but we were disappointed. The decor isn't the best, but as long as a restaurant is clean and the food tastes good, decor has little impact. Unfortunately, we didn't think the food was that great. The meat samosas were good, as were the condiments that came with them (especially the spiced onions and tomatoes). The chicken pakora was overly greasy on the outside and dry on the inside. The lamb vindaloo was very, very spicy and flavorful. We also ordered aloo gobhi masala, chicken shahi korma, and garlic naan. Those items were overly salty, and the chicken was not tender at all. I'm used to having Indian food with meat so tender that it falls apart when I cut it with a fork, but this meat required a knife. The rice we received had big chunks of rice stuck together as though it had been scraped up from the bottom of a serving pan. The worst part was that I didn't even have time to leave the restaurant without experiencing the "ill effects" of the food. There are so many great reviews of Sangam here, so it seems like we managed to catch them on a very, very bad day. Sadly, any place that makes me ill is not worthy of a return visit. read more

The Sangam in Ithaca Center on the Commons is just a tiny Indian food stand with three or four selections, like saag, vegetable curry, chicken curry, and rice. Sometimes they have naan, sometimes not. They also have lassi listed although I haven't ever asked for it, as well as cold soft drinks and juices. Behind the counter there is a small section of dusty-looking Indian spices and chutneys that are for sale; I doubt anyone buys these because you can get fresher cooking ingredients at Greenstar or Wegmans. The food stand, however, is a decent place for a super cheap meal. The quality isn't great, but portions are big and it beats the usual quick meals of pizza and burritos. read more

Their lunch buffet is amazing especially for the price. For around $8, you can enjoy various main dishes and desserts. Food tastes great here. Sangam is my favorite restraunt in Ithaca. In fact it is about the only place I eat besides the dining halls on campus. I have been eating at Sangam since 1983 when I moved here from Zambia. I have never had a bad meal or anything even close. The buffet is very balanced. You can avoid carbs and still leave full or eat as much bread and rice (made with real saffron, not just colored yellow) as you can hold. The Tandori chicken is amazing and made in a real Tandori oven! Through many conversations with the owners I know that they use a wide variety of spices and use only fresh food. The dishes are complex tasting and the chutnies and other small condiment type foods are extremely varied, There are always many desserts and many types of drinks to order. I don't how how they put out so many types of food for their buffett and still cover the costs. They also offer many goat dishes but not for the buffett. As far as I know they are the only people offering goat in the area. An example. I ate there for lunch yesterday (as I have about every day the last couple weeks). I had three types of chicken, a vegetable curry, a spinach dish, yogurt, salad, dal, coconut and onion chutnies and sambar. I avoid most carbs being a work out nut yet I left very content and didn't feel like eating again until late in the evening. You can't go wrong with Sangam. read more

I am having a hard time containing myself writing good things about this place. As a university student, I was picking up food for a club event to be held on campus. I didn't have quick access to a car, but was willing to bring friends to carry four full trays of samosas plus three tubs of sauces back to the event location. This is the sort of restaurant one goes to when seeking auntie's cooking... or Indian comfort food in general! They make the best chicken saagwala-large chunks of chicken dunked in creamy, spiced spinach- and quite possibly the best naan in upstate in NY. The naan is huge for the price and the endless rice with the chicken saag is always a plus. My friends recommend the beef jalfrazi , lamb mango, chicken tikka masala, and poori.... they also can whip up a mean mango-lassi if you are in for a dessert-like drink. The service at this restaurant can't be beat! For sure, we can always expect anyone to get a little frazzled with a full restaurant and hungry college students waiting at the door- but, my water has always been filled when needed and the spiciness level of my food has always been reported correctly to the chefs. The consistent high quality food is enough to bring me back every time! The lunch buffet is also a real hit with the students in the area because it is ridiculously cheap. My friends always go and end up heaping tons of food on their plates (breakfast, lunch, and dinner for ~$7). I can't handle spicy foods too well so the buffet doesn't always work for me. You can also order straight from the menu during the buffet :) Here's a tip: this is a great place to hold large group dinners-- I have had two group dinners here (14 people+) and our table is always ready when we need it! I am a regular customer and visited Sangam often in this 5 years but the latest time I went there for lunch buffet is the most disappoint. The food is low quality and very pricey for 9.40$ lunch buffet. I got plain spicy chicken curry, rice is very hard, less choice of buffet is compared to year 2012-2014. They rise the price but the quality of food and service is lower than couple years ago. Restaurant has the very big spider web at the top right corner of the table by the window that look like they did not clean up for so many month. It's very scary. They served the expired cantalupe which is too sour, bad taste in your mouth and unhealthy for your health. I think, they did not served cousine as their claimed anymore. Over all, I am very disappointed even I was very like their masala lamp curry for my dinner but I will not go back. Seriously, how in the hell does it take that long to cook a meal?! I could have built a tandoor and raised some chickens in the time it took you to make that dish to go last weekend. Nevertheless, the meal was a masterpiece. Truly delicious, and full of fresh cream, herbs, and spices. There was a solid 3 oz of chicken in my order that made me feel like I wasn't completely getting ripped off, but I still had to order Burger King later that night to fill my hungry belly. Sangam, you are oh so close, yet oh so far from being a decent place to order great Indian food from. Your dishes are fantastic! However, you who run Sangam are terribly incompetent people who are utterly incapable of providing good (or timely) service for your customers, but it tastes amazing when it finally arrives. If you place an order for pickup (following several extraordinarily late orders) you should expect a two-hour wait, followed by an annoying "we're very busy tonight" excuse. But to your surprise, when you offer to come pick the order up it'll be absolutely dead inside... I'll be placing an order this evening to determine if I've had a few bad orders, or if incompetence is the norm here, but I expect to wait way too long for food that is fairly decent. And if that's the case I'll likely never order from here again. Sangam: you guys make decent food, but most of us out here in college town think you must be idiots to take such a long time to prepare a simple meal. Prove us wrong tonight. Or forever be banished from our delivery repertoire. This stuff comes in a jar at the grocery store, and it gets in my belly a whole lot faster that way. You make good food, but for the love of god, learn how to run a business.... If only this meal will be prepared in a timely manner I will delete and rewrite this review into one that praises your speed and service so that others may enjoy your delicious food. I love Sangam. My young one adores Indian as much as I do. We go for the buffet and for dinner. The staff treats us like family. They are always personable and nice and remember us, no matter how long it is between visits. The chef/owner comes out and jokes with my daughter and his wife/owner always asks us about our lives and our favorite dishes. Then, those favorite dishes are on the buffet!!! The food is wonderful. It has just the right amount of spice for the buffet and there are spices to add if you desire. The types of food offered are varied, fresh, and delicious. When we order dinner, the spice is perfect & what we asked for. Be careful ordering Indian hot - it is amazingly delicious and spicy! They don't charge extra (like Mehak) for every little chutney and sauce. I feel like I am a human, being fed & taken care of at Sangam, unlike Mehak, where I am a dollar sign and a great disturbance. I withheld a star due to this restaurant not being my favorite Indian or the Indian that I base all others on. That restaurant is not in Ithaca though.
