This is a nice store that caters more to the Hispanic market. It's clean, well stocked, well priced, and with a lot to choose from. Unfortunately a premade salad wasn't really a choice here. They've lowered their quality instead of raising the prices slightly at the hot food area. We ordered a carne asada fries and a burrito. I've had the carne asada fries weekly, sometimes a couple of times a week when I used to work at one of the auto dealers around the corner from them and used to rave about them to family and friends. We stopped there to get dinner tonight, and I got the usual carne asada fries and was so disappointed. They've replaced the regular french fries with shoe string fries which have no substance to them and were not cooked all the way. The carne asada was so well done and chewy that I had to pull some pieces out of my mouth to spit them out and overall it had a very sour taste to the dish, and the amount of cheese and sour cream were nearly non-existent AND finally the container was no longer needing a rubber band to hold it closed like it has for the past 6 years that I've gotten the carne asada fries for lunch, it was about half full. I used to be able to either take home leftovers and have them for dinner or snack on them the rest of my workday, not any longer, now for $15.95 they give a half sized portion of absolute YUCK. What a complete disappointment. I definitely won't be shopping there again. Even their guacamole or Pico de gallo was brown in the cabinet, YUCK! They have really cheeped out on their hot deli foods, unfortunately. read more

Clean store with a prepared foods area that is popular on weekday afternoons. I go here to buy ceviche and get the ingredients for it. I recommend the individual avocados over the $3.99 bagged bunch because the latter over-ripened quickly. The other customers are generally polite about passing in the narrow aisles. If this rating was based off of their panadería alone, I'd give them 4 stars. They regularly make budín which is my absolute favorite. It's not the best I've had but it's getting harder and harder to find so I appreciate that they carry it here. So why the 3 star rating instead? Well, it's largely based off my annoyance that the items are not labeled with the correct prices or they're not labeled at all. I have my favorite grocery stores for certain items. Strawberries are better at Safeway. Baby spinach at Trader Joe's. Raleys for their carrots. And so on. But sometimes I'll just stop at one store out of convenience or when I know I need a specialty item. I loooooove Mexican food so I find myself at Santa Fe fairly often to pick up those one or two missing ingredients that I know I can't find anywhere else. And if I know I need a staple item of something else, I'll usually add that to my basket too. But when the price rings up at double (or even triple) the regular price of that item elsewhere, you kinda feel taken advantage of. This has regularly happened to me here so I've resorted to only shopping for the items I know are somewhat exclusive to this store. It's cumbersome but it's hard to shop for items when you don't know their prices! Overall ambience is fairly standard for a grocery store but may edge on the run-down side. Some areas, like the panadería, are well maintained. But I wouldn't buy many packaged goods here because I've seen grains and canned items well passed their "best buy" date. So those things seem to be lingering around for a while. Come check this place out for great bakery items at the very least. read more

Super nachos with Carnitas = delicious. Employees = super friendly. Spicy red salsa = incredible. Sad part: I have been weighing the nachos on a food scale since ~2017. In 2018 would give 1450 grams of nachos for $9, but now in 2021 they give around 1100 grams for $13. It means the value (nachos/dollar) has fallen 47%. It depends on who is preparing the nachos, but lately I've received as little as 750 grams, and never more than 1280 grams. The amount used to be amazing, but now it's starting to feel like a rip off, although it is still delicious. read more

Had to deal with discrimination here not sure whether it's racially based or not. But there is a shorter lady that works mornings in the meat department who is constantly rude and gives me dirty looks whenever I go there. It seems that she dosent like when I speak Spanish to her so I communicate in English, I'm japanese American but speak Spanish fluently due to my work. I asked her for 10 pounds of marinated taco meat, she replied "you want taco meat?" I answered "yes, the marinated one", in Spanish by mistake, smiled at her and went back to looking at my phone. When I looked up a minute later she had walked down the counter and began helping another customer. She than proceeded to help another customer and when another employee came behind the counter she gestured at me and said he needs something. I was appalled and honestly shocked at what just happened and was rather speech less. At the cashier I asked if i could speak with a manager, I was told there was no one that could help me. I am planning on following up with them on a corporate level at this point. I've haven't experienced blatant discrimination like this since I left Japan and am disgusted. If you don't like serving and helping ALL people you shouldn't be in the service industry. Everyone else I've come in contact with at Santa Fe has been nice and professional. read more

Heard about this store on the radio for quite some time, I step in a couple of weeks ago, immediately impressed by the cleanliness, especially the clean bathrooms. The organization of merchandise, produce & pastries. THE DELI absolutely mouth-watering food, Everything looked delicious & was presented in such a clean and fresh manner. For me the two things stood out the most, The in-house food preparation by real cooks (unlike some places like Whole Foods that merely warm up food), and exceptionally friendly staff. Kudos to the manager for maintaining such a fantastic team and a special shoutout to the cashier who provided super-friendly service during checkout. Today I went with my sister. She bought $20 worth of meat and a zucchini and a pear. She was going to buy a box of cereal that had the sale price of $2.79 but when it got rung up it said $3.99. The cashier went with me to confirm the price and she pointed at the Post brand cereal and she said the price is for those and I said no, the sign says it's for General Mills cereal and that's what we got. She didn't say anything and went back to the register, and proceeded to total the amount. We told her to remove the cereal and she said ok. Then my sister paid and when walking out she checked her receipt. It totalled $26. The meat was $20. And no way the single veggie and single fruit was worth $6. When we spoke to a cashier she directed us to the supervisor. The supervisor said she didn't know how it had happened, since only those 3 items were on the receipt. She said the overcharged amount that would be returned was $3.99. So the amount of the cereal we didn't take! It was so weird. Something felt off. The original cashier seemed upset, and didn't even want to hand the groceries to us. My sister had to reach for them. And the supervisor didn't want to give us the receipt of the transaction or the refund. She said no. This ain't the first time this has happened. Last year, I was charged double for a product. The cashier said I didn't know how to read receipts and I said do the math. She didn't want to, so I asked a supervisor that was collecting money from the registers to check. And she confirmed I had been charged twice and returned the right amount back. I thought that was an isolated case and had brushed off other relatives who told me to always check my receipt when I go there or that they had been robbed. But with today's experience I'm not going back. They lack basic customer service and manners. And I don't want to be overcharged. read more

If you are black, white, or asian, or even hispanic but don't speak spanish, expect discrimination and prejudice shopping here, you almost have to beg for someone to help you if you need help with something, worst is at any of the food counters, you could probably go 10 minutes without being acknowledged if you don't say anything, however if you visually look like you may speak spanish they'll treat you like royalty. Now obviously it's a hispanic store, in a relatively hispanic area, so employees speaking spanish is totally normal and epxected, however little to no staff with any english language skills, and on top of that, blatant disrespect to the general public, is unacceptable to say the least, the only reason that this isn't 1 star is because the food at the food court is somewhat decent. read more

It sucks when someone doesn't speak English and understand what you ordered I ordered a chili relleno and a cheese enchilada plate the lady repeated it which was fine but then when I got my plate I got 4 enchiladas the plate was pretty big. I ordered a small Slice of Cheesecake with a strawberry on top and drizzled chocolate on it from the Panaderia, it looks so good but it was not fresh it had a hard coating around the entire thing meaning it was old or from another day like 2 days ago or maybe even three I ordered a pork tamale for my daughter it was actually pretty good...the food itself was good, very good. Variety and presentation in the produce and meat departments deserve praise. The Taqueria, the prepared food deli offers a menu that covers the entire Mexican realm of food offerings. Fish stews, rellenos, street tacos, burritos pork ribs and salads. Fresh made tamales can be purchased near the exit for $1.99 each. Santa Fe is definitely on the food market rotation. read more

This grocery store was "mi pueblo" before it was closed. It's back with a new name "Santa Fe Mercado Y Carniceria ". Same concept as the previous store. Fresh produce, fresh meats, bakery and a large selection of prepared food to go. Fresh produce has lots of vegetable and fruits at a good deal. Bakery has fresh baked bread everyday. From pan dulce to birthday cakes! My favorite are the sweet bread and baguettes. The meat department has a variety of beef, chicken and even seafood. I like to purchase the prepared carne asada. It's already marinated to make great tacos! Prepared food section is by far my favorite. It's been hard finding a great Mexican food locale and this spot has all kids of food. I came here for the soup and can't wait to come back for more. My coworker had some soup for lunch and it looked too good not to ask her where she got it. I immediately YELP'd the location and planned where to go after work. I read a few reviews and feel compelled to divulge that I am a white lady and received excellent service at the deli/taqueria part of the store. Someone else had written a review implying they had been treated unfairly due to their ethnicity. I did not feel uncomfortable what so ever walking into this well lit, clean and obviously very nicely stocked grocery store. So much food to look at I felt overwhelmed and stayed focused on merely the soup. The broth was delicious and the meat tender. It also had tons of veggies. Potatoes, zuchinni, and of course the beef. So tender and flavorful. I think what gave it such good flavor was that I actually had a piece with a bone attached. Anytime a bone is cooked with the broth it adds flavor. Unreal experience! We stopped here in the morning just to grab a quick bite to eat from their extensive food bar area. My husband had a chorizo breakfast burrito and I had one with eggs and potatoes with rice and beans. Both were fast, fresh, and the flavor was off the hook! We also got an horchata and a pineapple agua fresca and they were so flavorful and delicious! Everyone here is so friendly and we liked it so much that before we left town we stopped in and picked up some fresh baked pastries from their panaderia area and a coffee. Again they did not disappoint and we're just wonderful. The whole store is merchandise nicely, extremely clean, and the produce area was so attractively arranged that I would not hesitate to shop here. I really appreciate the hot and ready foods Santa Fe has to offer. It nice to be able to get fresh and healthy (sometimes lol) food at a low cost in Monterey. I always get one out of the three items: fried bass, whole fried tilapia and the ceviche. I can recommend any of these three seafood items to any seafood lover. Because Monterey is known for seafood it's very hard to get fresh fish without paying tourists prices. This is a great alternative if you are a local (or a visitor) who doesn't want to pay the big bucks! I've also ordered a cake from here for a friends birthday and that was great too! Terrible experience at 8:30 this morning at the meat counter. Overall terrible customer service from a butcher and a Store Manager. The butcher was rude and stubbornly unhelpful. He shouted at one of the managers who came to help me. When the top store manager came, he turned the blame on me. The store manager Rafael never apologized, at least not until the end when I asked for one. The butchers were setting setting up so I patiently waited at the front of the counter. Normally they are very helpful. But today the man who approached irritatedly rolled his eyes at me when I finally waved for help having waited for minutes. That should have warned me. I asked for sliced spare ribs. I needed the ones with bigger bones. He flat out said NO! I was surprised because this is a usual and reasonable request at the meat counter, from me and other customers. I explained that other times I point out which meat cuts I prefer thru the window. When I explained this to him, he said "NO!" He cannot do it, its the rules. He was getting angrier. I thought we were just not communicating effectively, so I asked if the another butcher can help me. He again said NO! And in another angry tirade began. I decided to walk away and ask for a manager, to translate and buffer me from him. I just wanted my meat and felt he was being unreasonably difficult instead of helpful to me, his customer. I again waited 10 minutes for one of the managers to come out and help. This time it was a lady. She helped me go to the counter and ask another butcher to help. The original angry butcher (named Hipolito) then approached and started arguing and shouting with the lady manager. He insisted he was only following orders and following "the rules." I said the Santa Fe butcher shop lets customers select which cuts of meat (example: size of steak/which piece of tongue/which pieces of oxtail). But in his aggression, she couldn't do anything. She had to call another manager. While waiting I was so upset, I couldn't help tearing up. So another butcher probably too pity, approached me and gave me the meat I originally wanted. Ironically when I asked for pieces with larger bones, he accommodated. I showed it to the lady manager, as proof that the angry butcher Hipolito, was just being disrespectful and stubborn. Finally, the Store manager came out and saw me talking to her. I thought the store manager Rafael would apologize or smooth the situation. Instead he put the blame on me, his customer. He told me to calm down (because my eyes were tearing). He said I was emotional and excited and I shouldn't have brought the lady manager into the middle of it. This the common way of making women like me feel we are in the wrong. If I am crying from being verbally attacked I am told I am "excited" or "emotional." The truth is Hipolito the angry butcher was the emotional one shouting, disrespecting me and the lady manager. The store managers response and attitude dumbfounded me and I realized he was useless so I decided to leave. I would have not got an apology if I didn't ask for one at the end from Rafael the store manager. He grudgingly said "I apologize now what else do you want?" Terrible customer service. read more

Review for the Taqueria only : I've never felt discriminated upon at a Mexican restaurant until today. We stood in line waiting to order. When she was done with the person in front of us she took one look at us and left, just left us hanging there. I think she was looking for someone who spoke some English. Didn't even give us a chance to communicate with her. Another couple got behind us in line and the next woman that came to the register asked them in Spanish what they wanted. I told her we were next in line, ( standing first at the counter) and she ignored me and kept talking to the person behind me. I looked at the lady behind me and after she finished her order, she finally said oh were you next? We're ready to walk out now but another woman came to help us. She really struggled with the register and our order. Another lady came to help her. This is 4 woman now, for 2 items. I was surprised that when our food finally came out it was correct. What a mess. Terrible customer service here, it just doesn't exist. I asked what was In the california burrito and she told me what meats were available, that's it, then a blank stare. I asked what else was in it and just got a nervous smile. We ordered anyway, it came with a ton of French fries in there that we didn't really want. I would not come here if you don't speak Spanish. I'm super excited excited about the taqueria inside Santa Fe. Why? Because I don't have to drive as far as Salinas to get good Mexican food! The prices are reasonable and they have a wide variety of many Mexican plates. Tacos, burritos, Chile relleno, pozole, albondigas, nachos, etc. You can also buy beans, rice, salsa, carnitas by the pound/container. They sell champurado at the register which is amazing on those cold days and they have excellent prices and quality on their fruit (way better than Safeway). read more

My husband and I showed up 2 hours before closing for some food. We ordered and then waited 30 mins for someone to start prepping our food just to be told that they didn't have the meat I wanted. My husband asked for a refund and it was another 30 mins waiting for them to get us our refund. My husband speaks and understands Spanish fluently. While waiting for someone to start getting our food made, the manager walked around and asked everyone if they were ready to close up. The cashier didn't apologize or explain to us that the cook was sitting on the toilet. The cook didn't apologize for making us wait. The manager didn't apologize for anything.
