I first came to Zimatlan in 2021 and have been finding excuses ever since to make the 2 hr drive to Seaside just to get the memelitas. They are one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten and I have yet to find a place that makes them quite as well as Zimatlan. I have also tried the pan dulce and a couple other pastries here which are all quite good. The service and ambience aren't the best I've ever had but honestly the food is so delicious it's 100% worth making the trip to read more

This place is fantastic. We wanted a place with baked goods for our kids who are picky eaters and authentic Mexican food for the adults. They do have a kids menu but we did fine ordering tamales, tacos, and everyone went nuts over the memelitas - including the children who were very unsure about real Mexican food. Horrible service. Staff seemed annoyed to have customers. We ordered menudo, the quesadilla order and one taco. We were the only ones in there. After 50 min, my husband went to check the status. The woman asked the cook who first said he already sent it out. She told him he hadn't. He then said he was working on it. The menudo came out about 3 min later with cold tortillas with the rest of the order about 15 min later. Food was not great but not horrible. Won't be back. I'm sorry to say..I was craving for tamales and regret I went to Zimatlan! It was the most horrible tamales..while the meat filling was somewhat good..the masa was very thick and dry masa on tamales! The mole chicken enchiladas and the pork tamale was good here. They have all the sweet breads and treats you can imagine in a Mexican bakery. Lots of items, everything seems fresh and plenty of sweet treats to chose from. They have a full menu if your seeking more than sweet breads and sugar. I tried a few different items from the bakery, while they were good, I'm more a fan of the food items in general over the sweets. I walked in expecting a sandwich deli but encountered a taqueria w Hispanic pastries instead. So hungry I didn't care. Better than most. This is bakery underrated. It's probably the best Mexican bakery in the Monterey area. Quality is top notch. The prices are good. It's always fresh - made that day. Good variety. The pastries I've tried weren't the best. They leave the bakery racks with pastries and Pan Dulce out all day. Everything seemed dried out and stale. My husband & I ended up coming back here because we had a great experience the first time. This time we ended up ordering 2 carne asada super burritos & we were not disappointed. The meat was deliciously prepared & the burritos were pretty big. All the ingredients were fresh & made with perfect portions. As we waited we looked at their menu & we began talking about what we would try next because the smell of food in the air was just irresistible. I called this place in advance to ask if they had cheese tamales with verde salsa/ sauce they said yes. So I had my daughter who speaks Espanol fluently to order three cheese and four chicken tamales. The chicken tamales were great no complaints, but my husband who wanted cheese as he is not eating meat at the moment received three Pork tamales with huge square blocks of pork inside! My daughter even reconfirmed the order in Spanish when we arrived. Very disappointed that they would do this. read more

These where the worst chilaquiles ever. They are not traditional in any way they are literally tortillas in watered down tomato sauce with hella chicken bouillon. Made me sick with the first bite . Best mexican bakery in town! The bread comes out fresh daily and their atole + champurado are rich in flavor. The bread is priced right, probably the cheapest in town but with high quality. The workers here are always so sweet!! I still have got to try their food as I always see their menu while paying. We got the green pork tamales, pozole, chilaquiles and champurrado. I was hunting down some champurrado so I was happy when I found it but I was a little disappointed by the drink. It was a little too watered down for me, 4/10. Pozole was lacking flavor 4/10. Tamale 7/10. The chilaquiles were the best chilaquiles I've ever had. I like going here, they are always nice, it's low key and calm usually slow. I wonder why their prices keep going up? I wish they had a better business plan I think they would do better, or maybe they are doing fine and like being slow and having high prices? Regardless the food is very good and the bakery items are addicting. I correct myself the not all the items are priced high the bakery items are very reasonable. Also they make a very sweet Mexican coffee that is not on the menu that was amazing actually brought my friend to tear as it reminded him of his grandmother. Stopped by on the road trip down to socal. We went in around 930pm, so it was relatively late. It's a huge restaurant with lots of space. The bakery is also displayed on a rack near the cash register when walking in. Ordered 3 tacos (pork and beef) for $2 each. The tacos were solid, but I did wish the meat had a bit more flavor. It was seasoned and grilled well, however. The bakery goods were super cheap, but since it was at the end of the day, they were a bit stale and hard. ...with an accent mark over the second "A" Brand spanking new and I wanted to give them a whirl... but before I could a good friend of mine who had been ranting and raving about them for the last week or so saved me a "Molote" a Oaxacan specialty food. Molotes or "cigars" look like mini cigars filled with pure goodness. Fried but deceivingly looked like baked bread... made of corn on the outside and inside has this lovely lightly seasoned potato goodness. One bite and I had to have the other bite (they aren't very big). Smothered with a black bean thined puree and topped with Oaxacan Cheese that they also sell here (so I had to buy a small round) aka Queso Salazar (made in Brentwood, CA? whaty? whatever, deelish!). Tried 2 Tamales (like the cheese better than the meat one, shredded meat wasn't very seasoned), 6 Molotes, 2 Tacos Durados aka what we call Flautas (since they were rolled), quite lovely. The hot sauce that came with the Molotes was fine but didn't really seem Mexican-esqu maybe it Oaxacan style... almost reminded of the chili paste you find at Vietnamese restaurants, strange I know. Anyways, they also offer a mini selection of sweet breat for they are a Panderia, I got 4 Cheese Cake bread and they look lovely, I'll give them away in the morning and sneak a bite. Love trying new places and enjoy learning about new foods even more! read more
