Great atmosphere, however I ordered a steak medium rare and I sent it back for it to come back well done a second time. I'm pretty certain they order their steaks pre-cooked. Was not impressed considering it cost what a properly cooked steak to my request would be. I've had better. For such a nice place, I was disappointed. We took our time and the food was very fresh. I had a chicken fried steak sandwich and fries. The fries were the best I can remember, uniform in size and each with perfect golden brown edges. The sandwich was good and they honored my request for green chili. Mom had a club sandwich and chips. She was very appreciative. Sarah's is my favorite restaurant in Gainesville. Besides being in the most quaint historic building right on the beautiful square, the food is just amazing. I love the fried green beans for appetizer. The Trio includes a choice of soup, salad, and sandwich. What a gem in downtown Gainesville! The historic building is filled with beautiful antiques. Downstairs is a restaurant and upstairs is a a bed and breakfast. My wife, child and I stopped here to grab a bite. It was self seated and we waiting for about 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. The staff acted like they could care less to be there. Once our server approached to take our drink order my wife ordered a sprite and I did as well, the waitress somehow mistook my drink for a water, looked at me and said water then walked away. She then comes back with two waters. I'd post her name here but she never cared to introduce herself either. Another couple came in after we did, they were greeted enthusiastically by our server and offered the special menu and got their drink order taken. As we are waiting for our food order to be taken, the other couple gets to order first. Then we got to order. Not to mention she was much happier to serve them, gave them more recognition, hell they even got straws! We didn't get offered anything, not a kids menu, not straws, not even a high chair or anything. We get our food and as far as anything good goes into this review, it's the food. Their food is amazing. The service needs major attention. Anyways, we get asked once how our food was once, and the other couple gets asked three times! My wife and I have never felt more disregarded in a restaurant ever. Oh, and my wifes salad had a hair in it. My dear friends and I waited for weeks and finally executed our post COVID-19 shelter-in-place visit to Sarah's on the Square!!!! We could hardly contain our anticipation as we drove from Dallas to Gainesville. Sarah's of the Square is not just a wonderful place to eat, it's a real-life "Mayberry RFD" experience in wholesome, small town USA. Parking is always (and literally) steps away from the Secret Garden-esque, potted greenery lined entry to Sarah's welcoming front door. We were greeted by a beautiful, young woman who escorted us to our reserved table nestled near the large, bright window looking onto the quaint, historic Gainesville town square. It was perfect. We eagerly grabbed our menus to feast our eyes on which selection awaited us. (There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options too, since I don't eat meat!!) Donna Hertel, the gracious, grand-hostess & owner, came to greet and welcome us, offering a variety of beverages including beer and wine. We shared our enthusiasm and feedback regarding the sanitation compliance and beauty of the upgrades in flooring, large entry rug and homey decor. Donna is known first for her generosity in serving local non-profits, secondly for her creative, made from scratch recipes, and thirdly for her business grit. She and her passionate team survived the 2008 recession and (prayerfully), now the 2019-2020 global pandemic. This critical tidbit reflects the love and loyalty of locals and travelers alike. We went to Sarah's on a whim after reading the Yelp reviews. There aren't a ton of restaurants in Gainesville to choose from, and we wanted something special for New Years Eve. We made a great pick! Sarah's is named after the Madame that ran the Brothel that used to run out of this historic building back in the old days. They've renovated the building but kept so much historic charm. There were only a few other tables seated (but we had a late dinner), and everyone appeared to be having a great time. The food was delicious. I had crab cakes, my husband had the steak. He said it was the best steak he's ever had (and it's local meat, you can taste the freshness). The server we had (Bryan) was charming and very attentive. My husband and I were traveling north from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to our home in Minnesota. After having waited at a stand still in traffic near Austin the night before we were in search of a well prepared meal. We definitely found it at Sarah's! We enjoyed a special intimate lunch! We highly recommend the Chicken Spaghetti which is accompanied by a fresh mixed green salad and house champagne dressing which was delicious! The atmosphere was historic, quaint and cutely decorated. Even the rest rooms had an appropriate atmosphere! The staff was friendly and willing to inform us of the history of Gainesville and the building. We hope to stop again on one of our trips. I have lived in Gainesville for a long time and Sarah's has been around for several years now and I just recently ate there with my husband and we were so impressed we came back twice that week!!! The first time I we had the cheese queso to start with. It was very different but SO tasty. I then had chicken tortilla soup and my hubby had a cheeseburger.Both delish. The burgers come on a sweet tasting bun and it really enhances the flavor of the burger. The chicken spaghetti is the best I have ever had and I can't forget the chicken fried steak. I have to admit that I make amazing chicken fried steak and I typically do not like it at restuarants but this was very fresh, flavorful, and tender.
