This was the best service and food we had all weekend visiting the lake placid area. We had extra crispy bacon, French toast and OJ. Shout out to the chef everything was perfection. Hidden gem! 1000% a small town mom and pop vibe built into the downstairs of what looks like an 80s/90s home with matching wall paper border. Entrance is on right side of building, there's definitely a smaller seating capacity, one large booth that could fit maybe 6-8 people. Other than that a couple 4 person tables and a small counter bar. Service was efficient. All dining is on disposable plates and plastic silverware. Perhaps saving water in the dry season. read more

Family owned, great service, French toast is to die for (they make homemade bread cut thick and cooked perfectly). They only have 6 or so tables, food is served on paper plates with sturdy plastic cutlery and plastic/paper cups, but if you can look past that it's well worth eating there. They also make their own baked goods (again always yummy). We stop every year we come to this area just for the French toast. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed. I have personally sent 8 people there for breakfast (just make sure of the hours and days they're open), no one has ever comeback disappointed. Great place to stop on your way to High Falls Gorge. We visited on a Tuesday around 11:45 am. They close at 1 pm these days. Only serve breakfast but it made for a wonderful brunch for us. The menu is simple but we all chose the specials. - homemade corned beef hash breakfast with eggs -homemade biscuits and gravy with two eggs breakfast And the house fav - custard 1.5-inch thick french toast. To die for! Everything sweet comes with real maple syrup (is there really any other worth eating?!?!) My toddlers fell asleep in the car on the way there and then woke up and promptly had an emotional cry at the table for various reasons and the staff and other patrons were supremely gracious with us as we took the kids outside to cool off and then back in... even when we spilled the syrup on the floor by accident. The french toast is HUGE , which is delicious with the special combo! Omelette was pretty good, tasted home made which we were looking for. We went to Santa's Workshop at the North Pole, NY and Santa couldn't say enough good things about the French Toast at The Country Bear, so we just knew we had to go! He was sooooooo right in everything he said!!! I got the French Toast with farm-fresh fried eggs and a sausage patty. My husband got eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and homemade wheat bread toast. We think it was the cafe owner who served us, and she was a sweetheart. Took as much delight in our delight as we did! Awwww .... so sweet! The food here is fine. The French toast is pretty good, and the other things are perfectly good in terms of normal breakfast fare. Only 2 stars though, because this restaurant can't seem to serve you food on real plates, and provide you with real silverware. Using paper plates and disposable silverware in such times of global climate crisis seems like a travesty, especially in an area where the environment is the reason that people come to visit. This is actually the only breakfast place/diner we know of in town, and it is a very small place, so there's sometimes a short wait but I've never seen anyone wait more than 15 minutes and we're there pretty regularly in the summer. One little warning - and it is not exclusive to the Country Bear but to businesses in the Adk region in general - call right before you go to make sure they're actually open! We've had a few times when despite the hours posted online, we arrive at a place to find they're randomly closed. As you can imagine, when you're hangry and restaurants are scarce, it's not a good scene to make the trip out to a place that's supposed to be open to find it dark and empty. We love the Bear, but do yourself a favor and even if Google or the website claims they are open, give them a ring before you leave to be sure. read more

Breakfast was good, but definitely not what I was expecting from all of the high reviews. If you're planning to eat french toast for breakfast you'll want to stop here for sure! My husband got it and it looked amazing, it was probably 2" thick and crispy on the outside with a nice cinnamon coating. I just don't like french toast, so I got the pancakes and they were good, but nothing special. They serve real maple syrup which was a nice bonus. The meat portions were large, my bacon side was way more than I could eat. The toast was delicious, I think it may be home made. We would go back next time we're in the area. read more

Kind of an unassuming little mom & pop restaurant and bakery that you might just drive right on by if you're not looking for it. Luckily, we were staying at the nearby KOA and googled breakfast nearby and this place popped up and we're so glad it did. Biscuits with sausage gravy is one of my favorite breakfasts and was on special and homemade hash and eggs is my husband's favorite which was the other special. So we ordered both and split one giant slice of French toast. Eggs were cooked perfectly to our request (scrambled and over hard). I got an omelette and my wife got the two biscuit breakfast sandwiches. Service was fast, food was great with food sized portions. Timing is everything here, get here early. Cute little breakfast diner with the BEST food. Seems to be one family that runs the place from front to back, which makes it all the more special. They aren't kidding about the "thick cut" French toast. And the sausage isn't the typical tiny links that you are served at most breakfast spots; theirs sets the bar pretty high (see photo). If we were locals, we would definitely be the new regulars here. One caveat is that they only accept cash (so be sure to hit the ATM at the gas station on the way). What a hidden gem! The Country Bear is a small family run diner in Wilmington, NY near Whiteface Mnt. The food here is outstanding. They bake their own bread and biscuits and it is delicious. As touted the French toast is to die for, one of the best we have ever had. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. I had the corn beef hash and it was definitely not from a can. My son had the biscuit and gravy and they were perfect! And of course my husband had the lumberjack special and he couldn't finish it is was so filling (thank goodness I didn't order him a side of pancakes.). Now this is a scary place. It's clean. It's a bakery? It's a diner. It's service in name only. It's a family owned and run and they may own it but no one here runs! It took fifteen minutes to order and twenty to get breakfast. Death is quicker. It was busy, but the staff weren't. It's hard to recommend a place that was so indifferent to the customers, although civil and smiley.I don't understand how they stay in business. I can't tell you the food sucked. It didn't. This is our favorite breakfast place in Wilmington! It's very small and quaint, but we love the coziness and personal feel that it has. Our only dislikes are the small parking lot, that on busier days can be impossible to fit, and that they only take cash (no credit cards!).
