I came here during mother's day for lunch and this place was so packed. The wait was so long. Also, these people cannot pronounce simple names at all so pay attention to the guy calling out your names! Waited for thirty minutes and had to ask again to get seated (by that time, they already skipped us and took other guests). Crowded, loud, packed place. The food was alright. Ordered two thali and one masala dosa and ended up with a total $34. They could have better customer service A's customer satisfaction. I've been here a few times with co workers (many Indians) and once with my boyfriend (who is also Indian). This being the case, I was with some picky men on how they want their Indian food, and they all enjoyed their meals! I personally really enjoy the thali, as did my boyfriend when he tried some of the dishes. The food wasn't spicy which makes it easy to eat and enjoy all the different spices and flavors! This came with one sweet dish that I really enjoyed as my dessert, the rest were vegetable dishes. So delicious! My boyfriend got the masala dosa (pictured). It's HUGE and delicious!! I may order this next time I go (although I really enjoy all the different small dishes in the thali) The food is very affordable for the amounts you are getting at lunch! Drove across town to grub at one of my favorite South Indian restaurants in HTown, Saravana Bhavan! Pictured in the first image is a thali- in the middle is a bowl of rice surrounded by smaller bowls of various curries, sweets, and yogurt. This restaurant prides itself in staying authentic to South Indian culture, so I LOVE that it was served on a banana leaf. In my opinion, eating off a banana leaf makes the food taste WAYYYYY better. In the second picture is the Saravana Special Dosa which was bigger than my head and has a mixture of spiced potato, onion, and masala inside it. It comes with four chutneys/curries that you can dip your dosa in for the full experience! Both dishes were so delicious and put me in a food coma, which was not an ideal state to be in since I had to sit in 50 minute Houston traffic afterwards LOL. But honestly, no regrets, I would most definitely do it again for Saravana! The ambience was chill and the service was super fast. Sad you can't try this gem because you're not in Houston? Just left here and the manager didn't help much, didn't go and check to see if food was ready. I had a pick up order for this place. Seems to be a nice place to eat. But service is HORRIBLE! Some short kid with a maroon shirt and black pants shake his hand at me after I was trying to ask him about an order. He didn't care nor cared I was even taking to him. I know he wasn't the cook or back of the house as his shirt wasn't dirty and I've worked in the restaurant industry for over 8 years and that kid was very unprofessional I wouldn't have him infront of the house if he worked for me. So, first time here and happy to report that it will be my last. The waiter or the manager or owner, whatever he was, had an attitude problem. My assumption is that it was due to racism. Anyway, we ordered 3 paratha's and for some reason we got 3 orders of naan. We ordered a masala dosa, which never made it to our table, neither did it show up on the bill. I don't think any Indian will need to read this review if they've ever heard of Saravana Bhavan. This is going to be aimed at anyone who has no idea what this place is and what it's got to offer. First off, its purely vegetarian. Second, they make a killer coffee au lait. We like to call it "Filter Coffee" down in South India. The coffee beans are mixed with chicory when they're ground giving them a unique sweetness. I would recommend a first timer to try out their lunch specials which is a plate filled with rice, indian bread, a variety of curries and a desert. Being a South Indian, I can vouch for the quality and taste - ON FLEEK! If you're heading there for dinner, then choose any of their dosas. Final note : Do yourself a favor and hit this place up. Should've known better reading the other yelp reviews but my better half and I went in hoping for a positive experience but that proved wrong fast. Waiters looking lazy and standing around while patrons patiently wait for their orders to be taken, drinks refilled, orders to come out promptly. We waited a good 10 minutes before waving a waiter down to take our orders and the guy appeared to be inconvenienced. Placed our order and each item came out in 10-15 minute increments. Asked for our tea to be brought out ASAP and it was the last item brought out as we finished our meal. Paper dosa: Below average. It was doughy and cold on one end while the other end was warm and crispy - go figure! Channa batura: the puri was good! Vada: average There were several patrons at other tables who experienced the same with the wait time, overall service and food brought out inconsistently and were complaining. It was actually quite pathetic, I feel like I am being nice by giving them 3/5 stars. 1) Our waitress seemed to be clueless about some of the options on the menu. For some reason, half of the menu wasn't even available. "Can we have [insert item]", "sorry we don't have that today". This conversation went on for a couple of minutes until we could figure out what on the menu was actually available. Why have a large menu, when you can't even order what you want? 2) For desert, we ordered Semiya Kesari. What our waitress brought out was Rava Kesari. We told her, "this is not what we ordered, we ordered semiya kesari, this is rava kesari". She apologized and went to see what happened, she came back and said "sorry, but the reason they gave you rava kesari is because there is no more semiya kesari" ...umm WHAT? So something isn't available, and you or your kitchen couldn't even tell us, and YOU decide to replace our order for something else? What the hell is that? We we're really excited about this restaurant opening in Houston, but so so disappointed with the lack of good service. The food is on point, at least the food we could order was. 4 stars when you know what to expect! Hotel Saravanaa Bhavan specializes in South Indian vegetarian cuisine. The original restaurant is in Chennai and it has since then spread all over the world. I came to the Houston location with my Uncle who has dined at multiple franchises -- a few in Chennai, almost all of them in the UAE, NY, Dallas, and now Houston. He, and many others, claims that none of them compare to the restaurants in India. The Houston establishment is on par with all of the other outside India branches, except that it looks a little fancier. This place is good for lunch and can get pretty packed. The menu is expansive. I would consult yelp or an Indian friend if you're clueless on what to order, because the descriptions aren't very descriptive and the waitstaff is pretty useless in giving suggestions -- anything you point at, they will say is good. I can't tell if it's a language barrier or a knowledge barrier of what customer service expectations are, but just FYI, people don't come here for the service. Having been to the Dallas location as well as several other South Indian restaurants in the area, I had an idea of what to order. You can't go wrong with ordering a dosa -- but WHICH ONE? My favorite is the rava dosa, but I suggest exploring your options. I would stick with the South Indian items, since that's what this place is known for. Get your North Indian fix elsewhere. Looking at the crowd and Menu it looked like it's knows for South Indian dishes.. Cold food. Spoiled potatoes. "I don't give a damn" attitude by waiters. Every instance of serving bad food rationalized by claiming "It's close to closing time" even when closing time is over 1 hour away. Read my review of the Sugar Land location for more details. This used to be my favorite vegetarian restaurant but now it's just terrible. Management takes its customers for granted and just assumes there will be a steady stream of Indian vegetarians coming and repeated bad experiences will not harm their business model. It's almost as if they don't read their reviews and don't think other people do, either. They need to wake up to the reality of the 21st century: treat you customers bad, and word will spread all over the internet. read more

This is a decent place if you're looking to have South Indian Vegetarian fare. I had their special thali. Looking at it, I was reminded of home. But the food was just alright. I found that the vegetable korma wasn't spiced well......it was an overload of all the spices to an extent that you couldn't taste any of the vegetables in it. I loved the rasam (tangy tomato/tamarind soup), so much that I asked for 2 refills. The sambhar (lentil soup) wasn't anything spectacular in my opinion. The place is well lit...though chilly I must say. And you can listen to a good collection of Indian songs. You should definitely try the thali if you're new to Indian cuisine and want to experience the different flavors and textures that are a part of a complete meal in South India.
