Let me start out by saying food is good. However customer service is lacking. Visiting Dallas and so thought let's call ahead to see what time is last seating. We were told 9:30pm. Couldn't get any more authentic and I am taking about their South Indian thali (saravana special meals) Saravana bhavan is a popular restaurant in India and they have branches all over the world. They specialize in South Indian food, food from the state of Tamil Nadu to be specific. That's right, the diversity of Indian food doesn't end at north/South Indian! I still haven't tried anything else on the menu but I decided the thali in itself deserved a review! Eating here was one of the first things we did on reaching Dallas because sometimes, all a South Indian girl needs is a nice big plate of South Indian meal! The meal had 6 side dishes, 2 sweets, a choice of chapathi/poori and rice, the authentic South Indian white rice, not basmati. Not to forget the pickle and yogurt( a formal meal in the majority of south India usually ends with yogurt) All the side dishes were perfectly spiced, yes if you like your food mild, many of these may be on the spicier side. They were super busy during lunch on a weekend, one of our thalis came 5 minutes after the other and our server came back only to give the check but I hardly noticed with all that deliciousness I was stuffing into my mouth! Love the food here - been to it multiple times in Texas and New Jersey. Very authentic South Indian food so we always come here to get dosa. 1. Really don't like that they water out at all the tables - makes me not want to drink it because I have no idea how long it's been open out there. The place also doesn't feel very clean when I go, but I know that is kinda typical for "authentic Indian" places lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm Indian so I've experienced it haha. 2. Service is never super friendly, but I suppose that is just their way. Never bothered me that much, but it would definitely improve the experience if they just were a little friendlier. They are accommodating though when we ask for more sambar or anything. Found the service to be pretty fast though every time I have been there. 3. It feels really wasteful to give everyone all the chutnies when not everyone is going to eat all of them. I wonder if they've ever thought about doing a chutney bar or something. This is the realest place where it's completely vegetarian and it blows your mind away with all the deliciousness. It was busy on a Sunday night but they won't accept early reservations. The chola batura they serve is the best I ever had away from India ! Their dosas and chutneys are crave worthy. If you have not had Indian version of coffee, do yourself a favor and go for it. This is the first time I've had dosas and authentic South Indian food, but I've heard that this is one of the best places for them. I got the chili onion masala dosa, and also tried the rava masala dosa. I would definitely get the onion rava masala dosa in the future. The "chili" part was just some raw chopped up green chilis. Onions were also just raw red onions. The rava dosa also has a better flavor than the plain dosas. The potatoes were very flavorful and everything had a little spice to it, including all the dipping sauces. Nothing was overly spicy though. Our water and soda was served warm because fridge wasn't working. Found a cold water dispenser later but it was never offered to us. The bathroom was very dirty as well. Ample parking and a sizable restaurant, though I've heard there can be a line during lunch or on the weekend. Yes, it is a chain and yes the food tastes the same in all their restaurants, which highlights the consistency in their preparation and menu. This location has a lot of servers who are very eager to take your order and move on: so if you need time, don't be afraid to tell your server to come back after you review the menu!! They are hardly any help in making suggestions and one of my friends was in complete disarray till we gave her a quick summary of each dish... I have tried the idly vada, paper dosa, and onion rava masala dosa. All I can say is that their food is top notch!! Comes pretty good to tasting like home food... Plus they give you a lot of chutneys to eat with your food!!!! The idly is always soft and the vada feels like it was fried a second back. The dosa has to be made fresh and hence comes out crispy and delicious. While the servers are eager to take your order, they are also eager to serve you so expect prompt service at this place. Though once you are done, your plate disappears and your check arrives asap. Minus 2 stars for their "rush-rush" service. The filter coffee and mango lassi are also worth mentioning...South Indian filter coffee is very different from the traditional drip coffee. It is stronger, with a lot of milk and usually with sugar. In that regard the coffee served here is pretty good and can give you a good kick if you need one!! I will be back to this place until I find something better. So we gave in to that last Saturday night for our dinner out. At the outset we ordered for gobhi manchurian. The gobhi was crispy and mild spicy, just the way we wanted. Then we had our dosas. I tried the dry fruit rava masala dosa. It had cashew, almonds and raisins. The rava was well made and the coconut chutney was exquisite. Totally made my day. My husband is lactose intolerant and so brought his Starbucks coffee- black. The manager asked him to put it back in the car as they don't allow it. We explained to the manager that he is lactose intolerant and has a headache and strictly allergic to dairy where he carries his epipen shot and typically he drinks black coffee with dosa as just a tradition. But the manager refused and asked him still put his coffee away. We drove so far as we heard good review for this place. We gave in and he threw his coffee. He had to order the watered down filter coffee decoction. So much for rules? After employing all illegal Indians. I guess the group has become soo big so they think they can get away with anything. Being a regular here and given 4 stars to them on multiple occassions , I can just say I wont be visiting this place again. Food is being served cold and tasteless past couple of visits . Confession: this was my first time having Indian food in a restaurant EVER, so I have nothing to compare this restaurant against BUT in my uneducated, uncultured opinion... it was pretty damn good!! We ordered the mini idly to start, basically lots of mini rice puffy pancakes in a curry sauce. Tasty! I ordered the palak paneer for lunch and loved that it came with butter naan (seemed a little greasy, but who doesn't love butter?!). The paneer was tasty, almost a tofu like texture. If you are asking, Why didn't you complain? well, we Indian's from India very seldom complain about food! The after effect on my belly wasn't good. Here is my perspective about the place. Food (4/5) -. If you are craving for some good South Indian food, then you can surely visit this place. I tried a couple of items and loved all of them. I tried their Mini Ghee Idli, Vada and Rava Masala Dosa. The items were served with sambhar, coconut chutney, peanut chutney and green chutney. The taste was quite good and so do the portions. Food: We went for Mix Veg Parotta and Adai Avial, followed by a Madras Coffee. Mix Veg Parotta was very good. The raita went well but a good coconut chutney, which we used to get when we ate it in Hyderabad, would have done wonders. Adai Avial was good but a bit more sour. I loved Mix Veg Parotta more than Adai Avial. The chutney that came along also had a little more salt than necessary. Madras coffee had a great presentation - full marks for that. However, when it came to taste, it nose dived. I have had much better south Indian coffees than that. Ambiance: What I loved about this place is ambiance. Seating is a little congested but the high ceiling, the painting around and the soothing south Indian music playing in the background gave a very relaxing experience. Service: It was good and quick in the beginning. However, after the initial order, the gentleman simply forgot that we exist. As we were looking forward to ordering our coffee, we had to try hard to grab the attention for attendants who were roaming around lost in their own thoughts. The Irving Tx location consistently smells bad, like a toilet is broken. The service has been terrible. The quality of food has steadily deteriorated from having some of the best south indian and punjabi food in town to the worse. I would suggest that no one eat here. I'd also suggest that the global leadership of SB, come and check this location out and either shut it down or replace local ownership with someone who knows how to run a restaurant. read more

Hotel Saravanaa Bhavan is supposed to be one of the top most vegetarian restaurant from India. This outlet is located at Valley ranch area next to India bazaar. There is decent parking in front of the restaurant. As we got in there was a small wait before we got a table to get seated. We ordered for Combo 3 , some parathas and Pongal along with filter coffee. Coming from the City where this restaurant originally belonged, I know how their cuisine would taste. I must say that they maintained the flavor and taste like how it would be if I ate in my hometown. Only thing is that the serving was not hot enough. I called one of the staff to get me some ghee(more like Salt and sugar). I was shocked when the staff said that I was going to be charged 2$ for it. I have never heard or ever been to place where they charge extra for it. Also the staffs took like for ever to get hot water to the table. The only thing which came to the table faster was the cheque. The hand wash was very dirty and annoying to use it. Another drawback was their price listed. Yup the food is expensive here.
