As I was compiling my favorite sandwiches list- I realized that I had never reviewed one of my favorite sandwich shops ever. Sarussi has been around as long as I can remember...and all that time- the quality of their sandwiches has never changed! The best thing to go here for (while they have all kinds of Cuban food) is their Cuban Sandwich - the Sarussi Special. They put this special sauce on it that is out of control good. If you're ever in the area, give them a call and order ahead and pick one up! Oh- and they feed 2 to three people, so don't order one per person or you'll be having sandwiches for days! read more

The Sarussi sandwich is like a regular Cuban sandwich, but with magical Sarussi sauce. A large sandwich can feed 2 or 3 and a small is pretty big for just one person. They also make steak, chicken and pork sandwiches. The parking situation usually sucks. It's a small 8th Street strip mall parking lot...that says it all, right? But it's definitely worth the drive. This place is the mac daddy of Cuban sandwiches. The sandwiches are HUGE. Thier smallest sandwich is the equivalent of half a loaf of Cuban bread. I usually buy these for picnics and have them slice it into smaller servings. It's the perfect lunch.. They also serve the typical cuban food fare and the one out west serves breakfast. This place is tremenda mierda. After so much hype I was expecting something ridiculous. Something so good it would be like a religious experience. Something so good I would weep. All I managed to muster was a "meh" and an "are you serious?". My friend and I decided to share the Original Sarussi sandwich, a Cesar salad and some assorted fried apps. The Cesar salad was a testament to Do-it-yourself culture, because they didn't even toss that shit. Kraft croutons, Kraft Cesar dressing, and Kraft Parmesan dust were artfully arranged into little plastic containers, and we were left to put it together ourselves. It was a mediocre salad that doubled as a table activity. Everyone join in! The fried apps were all things you could find in the Costco freezer section -- these are the off brand appetizers that swear they're just as good as the already shitty name-brand apps. 'We swear these are just as good, guys.' Previously uncharted levels of gummy and gross were discovered here. And the crowning glory of our meal: the sandwich. The bread was greasy and overly toasted, so crunchy it was like eating a galleta sandwich. Crumbs all down my shirt. Mediocre meat and flavorless overall, that much-hyped special sauce added nothing. For years, I have heard that Sarussi has a great Cuban sandwich and I haven't had Miami's best until I go there. So, I took advantage that my car was getting washed and had lunch at this establishment. All I can say is... meh. Though homemade, the bread was a bit stale and not very good. Everyone's had the traditional Cuban sandwich, this is Jose Canseco - great taste on steroids and in your face. There's even a secret sauce. The scent of garlic permeates this amazing local sub shop which began decades ago as a traditional Cuban Cafeteria and evolved into the maker of The Original. It's an 8" or 16" sandwich on the lightest, fluffiest bread lovingly brushed with garlic butter. Rather than pressing the sandwich, they use an oven to cook the sandwiches open faced. The Sarussi Original substitutes mozzarella for swiss cheese. The thin sliced, slightly spicy ham is a counterpoint to the thick cuts employed in most Cuban sandwiches around town. Of course there's a little roast pork - also thin sliced - with pickles. That which marries the whole mix after it's been in the oven is a red, most likely tomato & vinegar based secret sauce. OMG! This place like others I have visited that were hyped up by shows like Man VS Food or DDD simply did not live up to the hype. Sorry but it just did not. Before I get into the food, let me comment on the service. As a gringo, I had no problem communicating with any of the staff in English. They were friendly and very attentive. I ordered the Sarussi original. All the elements were there in your typical Cuban sandwich., the pork, ham, cheese and pickles. Their twist on the Cuban is their special sauce. I tried some on the side so I could really get a taste of it. For me it tasted too sour, like a sour pickle taste. Others love this apparently, but not my thing. Eh. That pretty much sums up my experience at Sarussi. It's always a pity to be disappointed in a restaurant that has such a cult following. I mean, Guy Fieri raved about this place. Then again, his restaurant is NYC is known to be lacking in many areas so maybe he is not one to be trusted when it comes to food knowledge. I arrived with my fiancé and my aunt, the latter of the two having wanted to check it out for quite some time. The parking lot was empty. Quite empty. First bad sign. We walk in. Empty. Another not so good sign. I was beginning to think "For a place that is supposedly so good, there sure are a lot of empty tables and seats." We sat down and ordered from a not so knowledgable waitress. Got questions? Don't ask. They don't know. After trying to steer through the menu alone, I decided on the 8" Sarussi Original and a papaya shake. I don't remember what the others ordered. My shake came out quickly. It was a lovely pink color. One taste and sadness set in. Where was the papaya flavor? I tasted sugar. Not even a semblance of tropical fruit goodness. The sandwich arrived a few minutes later. It looked fairly nice. Lots of meat, gooey cheese, and shiny, greasy bread. The moment of truth had arrived. Would this be a truly earth shattering sandwich? I took my first bite bite. Nope. Not even a sparkle of happiness. I can't describe to you the texture with any other words but dry and greasy. How they managed the two is beyond me. Dry and greasy. Especially with all the meat inside. The secret sauce was super acidic. Also not enjoyable. I get it. Acid helps cut the heaviness of all the meats. But you don't need to use battery acid. Let's not get crazy. I also got 0 potato sticks on my sandwich. The description in the menu said it came with potato sticks. So where were they? I called over our waitress and kindly asked her in Spanish "My sandwich doesn't have any potato sticks on it. Can I just get a side of them, please?" She looked at me perplexed. Did I speak Finnish instead of Spanish? No. It was definitely Spanish. She told me she was going to ask. At this point, I was annoyed. What is there to ask? It's supposed to have them inside. They're not there. Just get them for me. 15 minutes later...no sticks. And no waitress either. Now it was time to go. I can tell you that even though I don't remember the order of the others in my party, I do remember they were also left unsatisfied. A new waitress came around, brought us the check, and we left...never to return. read more

Let's be honest, a pan con bistec around the streets of Miami, is relatively cheap and around $5..now why is it $15 in Sarussi? Beats me! This location has been around for quite some time. Another great place I used to come to with my family a lot and I love their sandwiches! Parking is okay and pricing is reasonable. Friendly staff and good service every time I go. I always order the original but I exclude their sauce because it can be a bit too much. Usually pretty quick to be attended. I've been coming her on and off for the ten + years I've been living in Florida... I am truly upset that the girls taking the orders can't pay attention and take the orders the right way ( especially when it's given to them in Spanish and I speak it fluently ) breaded steak (bistek empanizado). Not to hard... Don't know how she screwed that up .... The manager seemed to know his business and had everything moving smoothly and was concerned that customers got their orders. He seemed to pay more attention to what needed to be done than the servers. I'll give them another chance but if they screw it up again. I'll be sure to let you all know. This location was the original one and started off very small. The have expanded and I could see why. They have the best subs I've ever had, better then subways, publix and quiznos. My husband I ordered the Sarussi Chicken Sandwich, it is DELICIOUS. There is absolutely nothing that should be changed on this sub. This place is pretty good. It is a variation of a Cuban sandwich with the usual ham, sliced pork, pickle, mustard and Swiss cheese but amped up with a "special sauce" that they make in-house. All this is on a variation of Cuban bread. It is not the typical hard crusty bread, but a softer and I might make a guess and say it is a more of the sub type variety bread. The different bread and sauce make this a completely different sandwich. It is not bad, it is actually pretty good, but I wouldn't call it a Cuban sandwich. Among the differences is also that it is warmed in a pizza oven rather than pressed. I think the bread is very important to the integrity of a Cuban sandwich and while this is ok it should be called something else because the name is promising something it will not deliver. I cannot believe that I have lived in the Mia all my life and had never ever had a sandwich from here til a few weeks ago. I'm truly saddened that so many years have passed by and I had not tasted the perfection that is the Sarussi Original.
