First and foremost my partner says they make a bomb ass Lychee Martini. For me it's always tequila and lime juice and/or red wine, pretty hard to screw that up so always good. If you want a table get a reservation otherwise usually seating at the bar which is all good. Faster service there. We have had all kinds of food and all great. The Walnut Creek roll with soft shell crab is one of our favorites. Nice place to hang for the evening. Nice ambiance. Not loud at all so you can have a conversation. I was going to start off my review with, "Eh, just eh." But then thought about it, if you were to go there on a date, or with just one or two of your girls/boys, I think it would be okay. But if you're looking to go here as a group for a celebration, I'd recommend else where. Lets see, we had a group of 10, 8 adults, 2 children. They sat us right next to the bar at a high top, mind you, there isn't much room to walk between the seats of the bar and high top. They also ran out of seats I'm guessing, as some of our seats were bar stools, HA! It was my first time trying this place out, and it wasn't as great as I was expecting based on the price, scenery, and ambiance. I read many of the reviews, and while most have said the food is great, just over priced, I felt the opposite. The price of the food seemed to have been based on the appearance of what was served on the plate. As for the taste, nah, maybe it was an off night, but it definitely wasn't great. Let's see, the order was... a Beet Salad Riblets Sashimi double of the rolls below (I think) California Dragon Hokkaido N. Main Walnut Creek Sasa Rainbow Rock-n-Roll The riblets were a bit overcooked and dry for my liking, but others seemed to have liked it. The garlic soy sauce was sticky and tasty. The beet salad was good, the grapefruit definitely was on the sour side, beet chunks were, well it's a beet, so not much to say about that. The dressing was delicious, it was dijon vinaigrette but seemed to have a sweet flavor to it as well. Possibly from the candied walnuts. The sushi was okay. Unfortunately, when they were dropping the rolls off at the table they weren't really saying which one is which, so it was a guessing game at some points. The N Main and Sasa (which is their house roll), both included negitoro. I'm not really a fan of minced fish, and for the price of the rolls, I'd prefer to have a full slice of sashimi in/on my roll. But overall, some of the rolls were either too salty, or mediocre. Like I said, maybe it was an off night (Friday with 5:45 reservations). The bill was roughly $1k, and almost $400 of it was for 3 bottles of champagne. But for $600 on sushi, I would have at least liked to say I was satisfied, unfortunately I can't do that. Holy moly, how does this place get away with these prices? I thought I was paying for sushi, not a down payment on a used car. Each roll was at least $22+ and no wow factor as I've could've gotten the same roll for half the price elsewhere --just your average roll at luxury pricing. I can't imagine a worse Valentine's Day experience. Complete disorganization all around. No communication at the front door. People piled up, hosts taking guests out of order, no clue who is getting prioritized, completely left in the dark as some other guests are pushier and trying to plead their case from the back of the line, making us wonder if we needed to start fighting to not get skipped. Guests that were leaving were shaking their heads and saying, "what a disaster". We finally get inside, anxious and confused at this point, luckily seated near our reservation spot (thankfully we got in line early 20 min prior to our reservation time) and the host sent us to an outdoor table randomly because we were by the front desk. We were not seated at the bar like we reserved. We get to our seats and the table wasn't cleaned off. It still had tempura crumbs from the previous party and their signed check was still there. Waiter checked in. Nice guy. Frazzled. He explained the Omakase arrangement, which was confusing because omakase is sushi 99% of the time, not a bunch of appetizers. 'Service' begins. We wait 10 minutes and a miso soup comes out. Tiny, salty and lukewarm. Tasted like any strip mall Japanese restaurant, maybe worse. Wait another 20 minutes, steamed ROMANESCO broccoli and beets ... not broccolini as written on mayo. Wife's was missing radishes while mine had them. Tempura dish was so over-battered that it made carnival food seem healthy. Each dish with a 15-20 minute gap. No explanation, often requiring a check in by the waiter, "uh, did you get the salad yet?" ... then another runner brings us the wrong dish. Wife's water was replenished with the last couple of tablespoons in the pitcher, I was not refilled. He never came back. The dinner took THREE HOURS. Sitting there with one tiny bite every 20 minutes. Imagine one piece of sushi every 20 minutes. I left hungrier than when I got there. Our server was nice, but no one knew what was going on. Server asked us multiple times which desert we wanted and then after taking forever to get it to us, they ran out of the chocolate cake we ordered. When I went to the restroom, I peeked in to the kitchen and bar area, no one was hustling to get on track. No attempt to make our experience decent. They were pretty eager to clear off the empty table settings and gather the table decorations, though. To top it off, a sneaky 22% 'Valentine's Surcharge was slipped in and the surcharge was taxed!! When I asked what that was, the server said it was the tip. And the food was just ok. Underwhelming, not inventive. Put it in a styrofoam container and it would be 3-star door dash. Our romantic evening was ruined by Sasa's inability to execute a prix fixe dinner in an organized way. No effort to make things right, no comped drinks or dishes, no discount, no apology, no visits from a manager... just a mess that we were expected to deal with. Exhausted mentally and physically after this meal. It was awful. Won't be back anytime soon. Thank god I didn't get a parking ticket from my expired meter that I set for 2 hours. read more

This review is based off of their Valentine's Day pre fix menu. We highly recommend not to go here for their Vday prefix menu. The service was incredibly slow, took about 15-20 mins from when we first sat down from when our waiter came over to take our drinks order and a long wait between courses. This was 100% a cash grab event for the restaurant. The portions/quantity of food you are being served is basically nothing. It was 9 courses but the food was incredibly basic and small. They started you off with a lukewarm clam miso soup. Then moved to a 2-piece okra and spinach tempura. Then they served you one piece of sushi for 3 of the courses, to a tiny salmon tartar cup. Then ended it with a decent size dessert. That for $98 before tax and a 22% Valentine's Day surcharge - plain robbery. I understand this is a busy night for restaurants, and I have no problem paying $500 bill (for 3 people + drinks), we are active Michelin star diners, but when you are paying this amount, one would expect good/decent service and not walk out of the restaurant still hungry. We will not return and advise others to stay away for a Valentine's Day dinner. Not worth it. You'd be better off going to any other restaurant to spend your money and where the service is better and not slow. Incredibly disappointed. Valentine's Day dinner was a disaster. People were waiting outside for their reservation, up to 45min we heard one person share. There was no coordination, the wrong food/course was brought to our table multiple times, it was served out of order, waters were empty and refills that were promised were never brought. 9 courses and we were at our table for 3 hours. Not because it was an "experience" but because it was a disaster. 22% valentines surcharge is crazy. Call it added gratuity because so many people left upset and probably wouldn't have tipped if it hadn't been included even though it seemed like the kitchen's fault, not the servers/bussers (they were nice, but clearly frazzled). They ran out of the dessert we ordered on top of it all. Tal about poor planning. Hard pass on Sasa. The food didn't even come close to redeeming this experience. Had the worst experience on Valentine's Day. We had a reservation and still got seated 20 mins late. Then waited for another 15 mins at our table before asking someone to at least give us some water. We had to talk to the hostess to let her know we have not had a waiter come up to us since we got seated. A waiter finally got assigned to us and my husband ordered his drink. They gave us free champagne for the wait. Cool. Let's give them a chance. Another 15 mins later, we got our first course. There was probably 10-20 mins between each course. Up until the last 3.. they forgot about us again and waited for roughly 30 mins until we flagged our waiter who was trying his best to keep up with demands. This is a management issue as they put way too many tables in one section and expect the waiter to serve them all. Anyways, we told our waiter we haven't gotten any of the courses for 30 mins so he brought them out at the same time which was at least nice. What's upsetting was when the bill came, they didn't tell us that 24% gratuity was already included so we ended up tipping $50 more on top of the bill for one of the worst dinner experiences we've had. My friend and I visited Sasa on Saturday, 11/18/23, during dinner time. We decided to order and share the Autumn Salad, Scallop Ceviche, California Roll, Dragon Roll, Hokkaido Roll, and Rainbow Roll. Everything was flavorful and had an amazing taste. The presentation of each dish was wonderful. What truly stood out to me was the Scallop Ceviche because it was a unique, delicious dish. I did wish that the scallops were served slightly colder. The Hokkaido Roll was also fantastic! The ambiance was extremely beautiful. However, it was challenging to talk to my friend during our visit. The noise level was very high in general. Our server was Brandon and he was pleasant. His attentiveness and friendly hospitality met expectations. Overall, Sasa has tasty, palatable food. I do not recommend dining inside if you are not a fan of a noisy environment. However, it was somewhat doable to still have conservations. I might consider doing takeout next time. read more

We sat in the back patio, which was lovely, and our server was equally pleasant. Maybe the service had improved since the previous Yelp reviews, however it may have over-corrected. Every 5 minutes there was a new face asking if everything was ok- at least three times before we had gotten food or drinks. Things became less okay once everything arrived. The Otoro Toradito recommended by our server tasted like it had been dumped from a Chicken of the Sea can without draining the oil. I've met less fishy tuna sandwiches. The seared albacore was a risky move. It was another outlier on a Japanese menu that included Scottish Salmon in beurre blanc and a beet & Brie salad. The blob of truffle jelly added more slime than flavor. Finally, the black cod in miso abandoned the miso in favor of a half inch of butter for the fish to drown in. The venue is super cute! The service was great and the food was absolutely delicious! We brought a cake for my daughter and as soon as I walked in with it the staff grabbed it until it was time to sing. They put the candles in, sang to her, waited around for her to finish taking pictures and then took her cake, cut & plated to each one of us!! We ordered a few appetizers and drinks and waited for our main course to come out when the waiter came back to use and said "the chef is not in the mood the make what you ordered". I literally have ordered this simple 4 raw ingredient roll every time I come here or go to any sushi place for that matter. NO ONE has ever said that or had any issues with making it. It's a simple roll. For this type of establishment or any establishment for that matter to turn down an up-charge for a specialty roll is wild. Then the waiter proceeds to ask if we want to order something else (while we have no menus anymore). Obviously we didn't want something else, that's why we ordered these rolls. One of our favorite restaurants in the area for date night, anniversary dinner, or birthday dinner. The lighting is moody and well decorated. I do recommend asking to sit either outside or in the front room. The back room is not as nice. They have a great variety in the menu from sushi, apps, and land items. I don't even eat seafood, but this restaurant is in my top 5 for Walnut Creek! The cauliflower with the lemon aoli is AMAZING! I get this as part of my main dish because it is so good. Between my fiancé and I, we have eaten almost every single appetizer and you can't go wrong with any choice. For sushi, his favorite roll is the Main Street. Their cocktail are very nice as well too! The food sounded good on paper but when we ate it we were a bit confused. Not worth the steep prices for "vibes" only and mediocre food. Duck buns - the flavor was good but it was hard to eat. They should make it more like a sandwich instead of having it all on top of a soft bun. Also the bun was very rustic looking, the texture was not very refined. The tuna parfait was weirdly sweet and the creme fraiche flavor was out of place. I did like the crispy rice cake and presentation. The sushi rolls that we got, we couldn't put our finger on it but it just didn't taste great. Still one of my favorite spots to go for a fun night out with friends, solid food and service, and not just sushi! Chris our server was fantastic dealing with a large party of 13. We had friends visiting from NYC and they love coming here. The food, top notch as always, just a slight hiccup on my omakase that didn't come until we were all done. But to Chris's credit, he continued to check and see if we were good and making sure I got my omakase. I'd give 5, but want to leave reviews that represent my meal for the day. We've tried Sasa a couple times now and both times really enjoyed our meal. I loved my spider and avocado rolls and if you were a fan of Rok in the SouthBay, the steak you cook yourself on a rock at Sasa will be right up your alley - it's our favorite item on the menu next to the delicious brussels sprouts. I enjoyed the indoor seating a bit more since the summertime bees seem to have come out to enjoy the lanai, but the service both visits was fantastic. It's definitely more upscale versus a simple sushi spot, but the quality of the food is 100% worth it for date night. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back. read more

Shame on the owners and management of this restaurant. My husband and I too were victims of Sasa's cash grab Valentine's Omakase dinner. We were there for 3 hours for underwhelming sushi. The menu said we could order items not on the menu and when we asked, our server told us the chef is not doing it. We were starving. We noticed only to sushi chefs behind the counter for the entire restaurant. You can tell they were short staffed and over booked. This caused us to wait about 20/35 minutes between courses. Our Server Owen provided great service under the circumstances with the chaos in their kitchen. I only hope the 22% Valentine's Day surcharge actually went to him. The tempura sweet potato was amazing! We ordered one for the table and one to go at the end of the night. Staff were accommodating with Baby. Music was trendy like a club but not too loud. I was able to have a conversation and hear the murmurs of the guests at nearby tables. The lights were dim making the place feel intimate and calm. Not too large of selection for bubbly by the glass but I was able to snag a Rose which did not disappoint. Paired well with all the dishes. This restaurant is nestled in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek in the shopping district. The day before my departure, my son brought me here as it's his favorite sushi restaurant. The ambience was perfect. We sipped wine and munched on spiced edamame (it's a must-have appetizer). The beet cured hamachi crudo was delicious. However, my favorite was the seared albacore with crispy garlic and jalapeño. The jalapeño gave the tuna a spicy bite, which complimented the crispy garlic. The Poke tacos were also delicious. The spicy glaze enhanced the flavor of the salmon; the butter lettuce provided crunch and the avocado gave it a buttery flavor. Yum! Our server was wonderful.
