Looking at Yelp, this was the one within walking distance which I presumed he was referring to. I ordered online, so I was able to quickly grab my meal and head back to my work location to eat inside. Inari Nigiri: I always enjoy me an Inari, and this location was pretty good. A big piece of tofu skin and a fair amount of rice complemented each other well. My only critique is I wished it was a bit more "vingeary" like flavor. I know I tasted the sauce there, but I wish it was a tab bit more noticeable. Chicken Teriyaki and Tempura Lunch Combo: This is so much food for a lunch combo. I honestly was able to make two servings out of this. The edamame beans are a nice appetizer to start and the salad had a very delicious dressing. The teriyaki chicken was as expected and the sauce was not overtly sweet. The tempura was also fried to crispy perfection for me and they gave you ample amount of vegetables and two pieces of ebi shirmp. My friend and I met here for a quick, light dinner. It's a casual, seat yourself restaurant, with table service. The waitstaff were friendly and even though I arrived 15 minutes before my friend, they didn't hassle me at all about waiting there at a table before ordering anything. My friend had a California roll; it was large and she enjoyed it. I had an order of hamachi nigiri and an order of kappa maki. We both enjoyed their toasted rice green tea, although it comes already brewed and I'd have preferred to determine the length of the steep. I'd return to try some other things on the menu. read more

Amazing sized rolls here, pretty generous portions in comparison to other rolls in the area! We've dined here a couple times, and the food has been alright. Some rolls were total misses, and others were pretty good. However, takeout has been quite the frustration recently. I ordered through the Toast app (linked by Toyo Sushi) and it said the order would be ready in 20 minutes. I was running a bit late so I got there a bit after 20 minutes, and it took a while for someone to help me. Finally got a hold of someone, and they were looking for my order and took off. It seemed it was still in their queue as they were looking at the tickets. It also seemed others were frustrated waiting for their orders too. My food was ready over 30 mins after the estimated time. Thank goodness I wasn't on some major time crunch... Anyways, the food was packaged pretty well. They separated the rolls from the hot food, which was much appreciated. The kids love noodle dishes, so they tried - Ramen with fried chicken - very generous portion of the chicken katsu on the side. The ramen was packaged with the soup and it was way too soft. Good amount of veggies there. Tempura udon - good portion of tempura on the side, heavily breaded couple pieces of shrimp and some veggies with a side of dipping sauce. The udon noodles were also very soft as they were in the soup while packaged. I've really enjoyed their rolls with raw fish. They have a ton of those on the menu that there are so many I'd like to try. The one with lobster was good, as well as the ones with names - Jason/Camille/Ethan, etc. SpongeBob, etc. The baked ones, not so much, but perhaps it was off the day I tried? They do have some seating indoors and outdoors, some artwork inside as well (rock paper scissors art by the front). I'm not sure I will be heading back anytime soon. We sat at the bar, ordered two rolls, tempura and fried soft shell crab for appetizers. My personal preference for sushi rolls is minimal rice around the contents. I felt the amount of rice here overpowered the rolls and also made eating them a bit complicated. The tempura was crispy and delicious. The tempura dipping sauce was really tasty as well. We also enjoyed the fried soft shell crab, but would have preferred a less sweet dipping sauce option for it. The service was friendly and quick. While we were eating it felt very awkward to see at least 6 waitstaff looking toward us in our peripheral. Toyo is solid. It's good spot if you are nearby and want some sushi. The atmosphere is fine: simple, clean, and fairly casual. This is just a preference, but I would like the nigiri options to have less rice under the fish. Many sushi places put more rice in their nigiri than is necessary, in my opinion, as is the case here. Not a big deal. It's still tasty. Also, I prefer sashimi to be cut thinly. Here they provide thick pieces. I'm sure that some customers may prefer it that way. Just my take. Such a big fan of this place. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years and I have to say, the food is always outstanding. I think they have some of the freshest fish in the entire Bay Area. The sushi rolls are super big so you get your moneys worth, the employees are really friendly, and it has such a cute inconvenient location. My family and I went here for lunch because of the yelp reviews. We were seated immediately and the service was friendly. We ordered lunch specials as well as the bento box and also some rolls. The rolls were huge, PLENTY of rice. So there you go. The lunch special/bento box however were very disappointing. Very small servings, and for the price? It is not worth it. Also not once did they check in on us if we needed anything. We left feeling hungry and dissatisfied with our meals. The prices were higher, I guess since it's in Walnut Creek. We called in our order for dinner and it was ready within 30 mins for pickup. While I didn't dine in, the restaurant seemed pretty humble, clean, and cozy from what I saw during pickup. The staff are courteous and speak Mandarin. HAMACHI KAMA: More charred than I would like but the inside meat is still nice and savory. A little dry...! But the sauce saves it. I think it's ponzu? Fairly tangy and sweet. JENNY'S ROLL: Surprisingly, the unagi flavor isn't super prominent. I feel like this tastes like a California roll with salmon on top. The roll is super thiccccc and the fish is cut generously MAXI ROLL: Also very chonky, even bigger than the last. You can barely taste the tempura beneath the sauce and tobiko. Still delicious & extremely filling. The fish doesn't taste SUPER fresh but also doesn't taste frozen. It's good budget sushi. Sashimi The sashimi is great. 12pcs for a pretty cheap price and decent quality. It also comes with complementary cucumber, miso and salad. The salad and miso are kind of generic and the salad is just made of ranch and lettuce. A little disappointed because the lettuce was not the best quality and sliced into big dry pieces. The miso is also maybe below average in quality. It tastes a little chalky. Maxi Some pieces have avo and some pieces just don't, or were maybe covered in salmon? The pieces themselves were massive, but I think the fish to rice ratio is like 1:4, which maybe makes more sense. I think the flavor is good, Service The restaurant is fairly busy for to go order but not really indoors. The servers seemed nice but awkward. Not Fancy, but nice enough, especially if you sit at the sushi bar. Value is amazing. Portions vs prices is beyond compare. Sushi for a family of 4 for under $100 and everyone leaves stuffed? Yes please! A few of the favorites: Fuji Mountain Toyota Special Tobiko Nigiri Tekka Maki Hamachi Maki White Tuna Tataki For those that don't eat raw fish, the Chicken Katsu/Tonkatsu/Teriyaki/Udon are all good and portions are huge. It's taken me a long while to write a review here. My goal is to try almost every item on the menu. The facility is small, it has a hole in the wall feel, without being an actual hole in the wall. I have some complaints about the cleanliness of the place but the quantity plus quality is very, very equal. Some days are hit or miss. The quality and size of the rolls fluctuate depending on the time of week (it seems). All in all, I still choose this place hand over fist. It scratches the itch without burning the bank. I'm torn on giving five stars because it really is 5/5 for what they have to offer but I unfortunately am giving 4 because the place needs some janitorial services from time to time. We had eaten at Toyo sushi sometime ago and it was quite tasty. The last two visits, however things seem to have changed. The fish was tasteless and did not seem to be fresh. On yesterday's visit, the coloring of the fish was off, and the fish was without flavor. Immediately after the meal, we had sharp stomach pains which preceded severe gastrointestinal issues. The food here wasn't disgusting, it was just a letdown. I had an avocado and cucumber roll, miso soup and their side salad. The large chunks of cucumber in the rolls made them somewhat unenjoyable to eat. Large seems to be the name of the game here: the rolls themselves were also big, hefty globs of rice and seaweed stuffed with my chosen ingredients. And not to break out the violin or anything, but there weren't any sesame seeds on top of the sushi. Maybe I'm just too used to my go-to, Kansai, but I'm the type of woman who likes a lil' something extra on top. (And you should be, too.) The salad dressing was um... Off. But luckily I ordered takeout, so I just used some dressing that I had at home. Surprisingly, the side salad and the miso soup were actually the best part of my dining experience here. Initially I thought they must charge a little bit more than I'm used to for their miso soup ($4.95), but when I got home I found out that they give you a massive container of miso. This sushi spot seems to be a great family-run business! They accommodated our party of 7 (my friends and I wanted sushi after our hike up Mt. Diablo) with no issue and with friendly service too. I personally ordered the yakitori and the Ghost Special roll from their Chef Special menu. My partner and friends ordered a bunch of different things from the Double Salmon Roll, the Dinner combos (tempura, salmon, and chicken katsu) and some soft shell crab. We all enjoyed our food very much! I loved the smoky, grilled flavor of the yakitori with their sauce! It was so tasty I could just eat a bunch of those for dinner and be happy... The Ghost Special was also good but it had a bit too much sweet sauce on top. I found myself using a lot of soy sauce (I don't normally do that) to counteract the sweetness a little. I also wished they added more spicy scallops because I could mostly taste the imitation crab. I tried the other things my friends ordered too, like the katsu and tempura. Both of these dishes were fried to perfection. The tempura had such a fluffy, crisp batter and the selection of tempura options was great. Very tasty sushi in Walnut Creek! Why it's taken me so long to finally try this spot is beyond me. But after coming here for the first time a few months ago, I already know that I'll be back for more. Toyo Sushi is located in the busy Encina Grande shopping center and has been thriving here for years. I caught a sushi craving one evening after I got off work. After reading several of the glowing reviews about Toyo, I headed there for dinner. This isn't the hugest sushi spot in the world, but they do have quite a few tables. The place was packed when I arrived with just about every seat being taken. There was nobody at the sushi bar, so I helped myself to a spot. The staff was very warm and welcoming. I was given menus right away. They have a very long and versatile sushi list. Many of their specialty rolls sounded appetizing. Being the creature of habit that I am, I decided to try two of my favorite classic rolls; the Lion King roll and the Dragon roll. I also got a bowl of miso soup to start. It was an unusually chilly evening, and I was craving for some hot tea with meal. They delivered a whole pot of tea and it warmed me right up. The food took a bit long to arrive, but they were very busy. First out was the miso soup and it tasted great. It was very flavorful and arrived nice and hot. The rolls arrived sometime later, and both rolls were nicely plated. The rolls were both thick and hearty which I loved. The sauce on the Dragon Roll was very different than what I'm used as it was quite tangy, but I enjoyed it. The Lion King Roll was dynamite! The avocado was very fresh and I loved that they used plumper pieces of salmon. Both rolls were fresh and super filling. I ended up finishing half of each roll and ate the leftover rolls the next day. The Dragon Roll actually tasted better the next day (I reheated it in my air fryer). Service was minimal but still cordial. The sushi chefs were very kind and also extremely entertaining to watch. When I left, they all thanked me and wished me a great evening. It was a sweet parting gesture on behalf of their entire crew that I really appreciated. This was a great first time experience for me. Loved the rolls and the sweet and hardworking staff. I had lunch here today with my family. We spent 100 dollars and food isn't that great. First of the misi soup was very salty none of us touched it. Then I ordered seaweed salad it was also salty! I ordered saba it was also salty! My kids ordered chicken teriyaki and and chicken katsu but they didn't finish and they usually have big appetites. The one thing good was the lion king! And tempura! Please someone tell the cook to hold off on salt. I don't think we'll come back. read more
