At our table we had baked chicken, ham, glazed carrots (not too sweet), real mashed potatoes (not whipped) and squash (yellow sautéed with onions), peach cobbler and sweet potato pie. I don't really know this style of food very well, but my friends from the south were super excited about eating here. According to them the food tastes exactly like it's supposed too. I enjoyed it as well. The menu changes every day, I hear it is on a weekly rotation so you know which day you like. Good place to come in and eat some classic southern food. Sascee talked us into some banana pudding. We asked for smaller portions, which were still huge. I don't know if we paid the same as a regular portion, but we all really enjoyed it. Just ate here for lunch today. First of all, I'm not going to say I'm an expert on Southern food because I'm not - I grew up on the West Coast. That being said I went with some co-workers who had recommended going there and was pleasantly surprised. The location is kind of in the heart of a part of Waco I'm not too fond of. However, the food and restaurant was very good. I have to liken the plate of fried cabbage, mac' and cheese, and meatballs with brown gravy to something you'd make at your own house; good home cooking at it's best. The only downside at lunch is that they didn't have a large selection of main dishes - I wanted catfish but they weren't serving that. Great "dive." So glad I read the reviews of the food. Don't let the security bars on the door put you off. Great butter beans, cabbage and potatoes. My husband also liked the chicken. The food reminded us of the old church "dinner on the grounds" where everyone brings their best dish. We split butter milk pie for dessert. Looked online for a place to eat lunch with the family--away from all the Magnolia hubbub. This simple place was just what we needed. We were greeted at the door with a smile and were shown to the buffet table. Ribs, chicken, sausage, catfish, beans, collard greens, potato salad. Cornbread on the table. Don't skip the desserts! We tried the banana pudding, pound cake and sweet potato pie. All delicious! Affordable prices and very friendly staff. Highly disappointed. Won't be back. I'm very surprised since the reviews were so awesome! For one I never been to a super expensive southern restaurant. The prices are significantly over priced for what they served. We had 2 adult entries and 2 kid plates and it was $75!! One of the adult entires was a two meat plate, ribs and baked chicken. The rib portion was fine but they served a chicken thigh that was so small (maybe about 2 ozs worth and that's with the bone, if I had to guess). And that plate was almost $20! We ordered a slice of pecan pie that was warmer than our whole entire food we got. They served cornbread as a compliment and I asked if they had butter, no butter. How does a southern restaurant have no butter? They served mashed potato's and Mac and cheese that has tons of butter in both. I don't know how they didn't have it. They also didn't have no ketchup for the kids. They also was out of the drink that I originally ordered. It was constant No's for us. I also don't mind paying money for food that is worth the money but definitely wasn't worth $75. read more

First time trying Sascees i was referred numerous of times by my co worker. He loves it and everytging about Sascees. My husband and I ordered takeout. I got the baked chicken and dressing sweet potatoes and cornbread and it was delicious taste just like grandmas dressing. I got banana pudding for dessert and wen i tell u it was better than grandmas thats exactly what i mean (Definately hope grandma never sees this lol) Going back for lunch tomorrow just because I'm so anxious to try something new on the menu. Companion and I had lunch here, first visit for both of us. We were warmly greeted when we walked in. You got to a cafeteria type set up & tell them what you want. Choices of the day were: fried chicken, turkey tenderloin, neck bones, liver and onions. Also, black eyed peas, fried cabbage, corn, carrots, pinto beans and dirty rice. I chose the 1 meat plate: Liver & onions, fried cabbage and pinto beans. Corn bread was brought to our table & drink order taken. The pinto beans were okay, but the liver and cabbage were EXCELLENT!! Southern food like my grandmas used to make. We even met Sascee. She is a lovely lady and an excellent chef. I had porkchops with gravy, cabbage and black eyed peas. Ken had chicken and rice with pea salad. Good size portions. We split the peach cobbler with a dollop of real whipped cream which did not disappoint. Served "cafeteria style", the food could have been a little warmer, but overall the experience and food is a definite A in the grade book. Very clean and friendly folks who work there made for a nice local eatery. This is just blocks from The Magnolia, so you could walk it or find the free parking around the corner. If you like great southern, soul cooking made by locals then you've come to the best place in Texas. The staff was friendly and helpful with the selection of meats and sides all cooked from scratch. I had the homemade meatloaf, sautéed squash, and boiled cabbage with ham. My husband had the fried chicken with a crispy cornmeal breading, glazed carrots, and butter beans. All came with a warm basket of cornbread. We topped off the meal by sharing the most tasty banana pudding I've ever had. Easily the best thing we did in Waco was eat here. I swear that every bite makes you happier! They had the best turkey I've had in my life, sweet potatoes that almost made us cry and killer stuffing.
