Second time to Sassafras and glad I came back for Brunch! In addition to their food I love the atmosphere and the wait staff have always been so friendly and fun. Had dinner here after a play. Food and service all great. Pimento cheese and gumbo as appetizers were terrific. I had the crispy chicken sandwich and my spouse had the fried chicken dinner. Emerging from COVID, Sassafras is coming back better than before. The menu is eclectic New Southern, combining classics like pimento cheese, or pickled vegetables, with southern takes on gnocchi and squash blossoms. They do a lot of in-house curing and pickling. The house-cured coppa with cheese, cornbread crostini, pickled mustard seed, and melon, was awesome! Some of the best fresh oysters in the downtown area. Their mains are equally top drawer. Amazingly fresh red snapper. Meats, and their shrimp and grits are all kick-ass. Sides like their Mac and cheese, or artisan grits, can be turned into mains. Desserts have picked up. Their Beignets are New Orleans worthy! Bar is craft, and while their inventory of top shelf is a bit limited, the cocktails that they make are outstanding. Parking is nonexistent. It's in the downtown, adjacent to Clematis Street, so park where you can, nearby city garages, street, or the retirement home lot. The menu changes with great regularity, which makes it fun to come here and explore the chef's latest. Of the Subculture Group restaurants, it has jumped into their culinary Big Three, with DaDa (Delray), and Hullaballoo. read more

Mike the Mixologist is the best to do it in Downtown. I'm new to the area and he gave amazing suggestions for the menu and kept my bottomless mimosas fully flowing! The place really gave Beach feel! Went to Sassafras for happy hour which exceeded my expectations. They have happy hour 5-7 Monday through Friday with some spectacular deals! I had the chicken skins and jalapeños corn bread (bthe est I've ever had) to start. Both items were on the happy hour menu. I also had the cheeseburger which I know sounds basic but it was the best cheeseburger I have ever had! It was also on happy hour for only $9 Our waitress Kristi was phenomenal! She was very knowledgeable about the menu and everything she suggested was absolutely amazing. Oh!! They also give away free mini ice cream cones at the end of your meal. They have different flavors each day. We had the walnut chocolate swirl which was awesome. I would highly recommend visiting if you are in west palm. read more

4 people tried this restaurant recently for the lobster special. 2 Maine lobsters 1 pound each steamed for $30. They were over cooked. 2 people tried their world famous fried chicken with a side order of their famous biscuits. They said it was good. The wait for a waiter or waitress was 25 minutes. Our waitress was terrible. She did not know the menu, we had to ask for many things. She did not pick up the giant menu from our table. The 2 side biscuit orders were over priced for what you get . What a beauty! Sassafras is beautifully decorated with an open kitchen plan. I would never think it was a southern restaurant by the decor. It's painted in a light blue with colorful light fixtures. I think it would be perfect decor for a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine since the blue reminds me of the sea. I just don't get the southern vibe once I was inside beside the food on the menu. Any who I went with a group of girls for happy hour. They have a lovely wine selection with wines around $5. Total score! We ordered a ton of different apps to try, Like the boiled peanuts, crispy chicken skins, pimento cheese, fish dip and hush puppies. My favorite out of the bunch was the fish dip. It's beautifully plated with jalapeños on top, crackers all In a row and mixed veggies of carrots, radishes and celery. The pimento cheese was a winner as well which came plated the same way. The other items I wasn't so crazy about. Friends at the table loved the hush puppies where I thought they were just ok. I'm excited to return again to try other items I eyed up on the menu. My husband and I are still trying different spots and Sassafras will not disappoint! We went on a Wednesday night and had the smash burgers along with fries. Best burger hands down... made with brisket and sirloin. We also enjoyed the beers for happy hour, half price, as well as a mango daiquiri which I didn't care for. Their service did not disappoint. Their presentation was amazing. The ambiance was breezy, cool, and passive vibes. Would recommend sitting outside. The dishes were okay. We ordered the chicken and waffles and the eggs Benedict. Chicken came out as actual chicken wings with bones in it. I'm accustomed to the chicken fingers (boneless) but the waffles were crisp, flaky, and the batter was made to perfection. The eggs Benedict carried tons of flavor. They were accompanied to rustic potatoes but they were more on the extra crispy(almost burnt) side. But overall they were good. The kitchen is open and able to be seen from the patio. Went to Sassafras for my second time last night. It was great. The wedge salad was fantastic - that dressing is to die for. The cheddar biscuits = fantastic. And the service was first rate. (Great job Jane!) But y'all that place is hot. Not warm. It is "I sweat from the second I sat down to the moment I left" hot. It was like this the first time I went too. It's bc the doors are open for ambiance but that vibe is KILLED by the heat. I sweat through my shirt and had to wipe myself off with my napkin often. It was not cute. Jane eventually closed some of the doors for us which was so kind but it's June 29th - no doors should be open. Ever. I def recommend. Just take a personal fan and an ice pack. read more

I've been following this restaurant online since I heard about it. My husband is a native Floridian with deep southern roots and loves southern cuisine -- which I don't make (like his mother used to). So we were looking forward to the restaurant opening. We came last Friday evening. I'd been hoping they would have valet parking since it's so crowded downtown on weekends. But as they didn't, we finally found a spot in a lot nearby and walked over. The restaurant bar was packed, but the tables were open enough to have our choice. We opted to sit inside even though the doors of the restaurant next to our table were open to the street. I had a good view of the open kitchen. The one negative was that the music was blaring -- so much so that it was hard to hear each other, let alone the waiter. I'd seen on Instagram that they were offering happy hour specials. Our waiter, Joe was friendly and eager to please. He had to check what beverages were included in the happy hour as nothing had been printed as yet. Luckily, my husband's wine choice (a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc) was included in the 50% off deal. After we got our beverages, I also enquired about what food items were being offered at happy hour, as well. Quite a number of starters ("snacks") were on the list at discounted prices. We chose one of the small plates-- the pate -- as our starter to share. The chicken liver pate came in it's own mini jar along with bread toasts. It was rich and smooth. On the plate was also some pickled watermelon rind mostarda. This condiment is usually made of fruit and mustard flavored syrup or sometimes mustard powder and wine. There were also a few lettuce leaves and some pickled onions. The sweet picked rind was a perfect counterpart to the creaminess of the pate. It was just the right amount to share. We decided to have a couple more shared plates rather than one large entree. From the regular menu we chose, from the "veggies" section, the fried green tomatoes and burrata dish. Three thick green tomatoes slices were dipped in corn meal and fried. They were perfectly cooked -- not too mushy -- and topped with stewed red peppers and onions (pepperonata) and molasses. A small ball of soft burrata was on the side of the plate. For our last sharing dish we opted for a starter that was one of the recited nightly specials -- pork belly. The pork was crisped on the outside and glazed with sorghum. It was served atop some apple butter. Along side were squash blossoms and thinly sliced green apples and something else orange that I didn't ask what it was... plus there was a sprinkling of nuts overall. I liked the meat of the pork. I'm not into the pork belly fat -- just the outside crispy parts. All the food we sampled was quite good -- an upscale creative take on southern favorites. If you like this type of cuisine, you're in for an adventure. Just be prepared for the usual downtown west palm loud music. Enjoy the dining experience and plan to talk later.... read more

The restaurant is attractive and comfortable. It's just around the corner off Clematis street, so there's a bit less noise and commotion. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the bar menu interesting. Our drinks were great. We sampled several small plates and appetizers - all were fair at best. I love jalapeño cornbread. Theirs were shaped like fingers. The taste was there; the consistency not. The batter was far too thin. The cheese biscuits were also "just ok." And they were greasy. Our waiter suggested the liver pate. It was our least favorite. I'll say no more. The gumbo had good depth and flavor. It was probably the best dish we had. The shrimp and grits were pedestrian; again too thin. (The spice was perfect though.). The fried chicken was fair. The chicken itself was good. Flavorful and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, the breading was tasteless and overcooked. Overall, it was an ok experience, but not worth going back. read more

This place was absolutely incredible!! Tucked away in Downtown WPB, you'll find this gem of a restaurant. We came here for a dinner to celebrate our best friend's bachelorette. From the moment you walk in, we felt like we were at a European restaurant. The open kitchen, jars on shelves, blue lighting at the bar all made this place that much more inviting. We ordered The Local cocktails to start and they were so tasty and refreshing! As an appetizer, we ordered the arugula salad and the biscuit and cornbread platter. The arugula salad was to die for!! It was freshly grown large leaf arugula, sort of like farm style. The flavors of the mushrooms and dressing were impeccable. Our cornbread and biscuit platter was also a hit! We couldn't stop talking about the jam and butter combo. For the main course we ordered the root beer braised ribs, Mac and cheese, grouper special, and vegetable grain bowl. Everyone LOVED their dishes. Especially the vegetable grain bowl. Typically restaurants overlook vegan/vegetarian options but this was exploding with flavor. Complements to the chefs!! I wish I could have tried everything on the menu. I have to give a shout out to our incredible waiter, Joshua B. for the excellent service. He even surprised with a basket of beignets for the bride to be!! As a cherry on top, they were playing all our favorite songs and bands, which made us feel so nostalgic. First - the bread was a hamburger sesame bun, didn't work for the BLT. The fried greed tomato was the size of a pickle... barely there. The pimento cheese.... Barely there. With the right bread and proper portions of the tomato and pimento cheese it might have been quite tasty.... But they skimped on the star of the dish. Oh... and the fries were over cooked (burned) Eggs Benedict - the hollandaise was not from scratch. Fail. Chicken and waffles - chicken was bone in and had no flavor. Breading was soggy. I've spent quite a bit of time restaurant-hopping in Savannah, New Orleans, and even ate my way through Charleston over nearly two weeks. If YOU enjoy the kind of food you'll often find in those cities, well, you should most definitely check out Sassafras in West Palm Beach! My wife and I have visited 2 times in their first month open, and both times we left with big smiles. The open kitchen is very appealing for food aficionados, and it's obvious the team has tons of experience working in high-end high-pressure kitchens. I do know that Exec Chef John Thomas is a stickler for using only the top ingredients from the best sources. That includes local same-day seafood, just-picked local produce, and heirloom grains from the fields of South Carolina. It's possible not everyone will LOVE every dish - heck, everyone has different tastes - who am I to say what you will love? But it is not possible that anyone will ever be able to gripe about the quality of the provisions here nor the thought and work put into each dish. So, IMO, you'd be crazy to not at least check it out for yourself, ASAP. I love coming to Sassafras for dinners and happy hours. Their food is great! Chef John and the crew prepare everything from scratch right in front of you in the open kitchen. My favorite items are chicken and dumplings, fried chicken and Benton's bacon and melon. Pickled veggies are also great, so is pate. They source their produce from local farms, so salads are always fresh and taste great and healthy. Besides excellent food and yummy craft cocktails (menu changes seasonally), service is also great no matter if you stay at the bar or grab a table outside. It's really hard to find good restaurant service these days but I'm always confident that Sassafras will take a good care of me whether it's a happy hour, dinner or brunch with friends. Usually I absolutely love this place. I sat at the bar for literally 10 minutes and no one said anything to me. The bartender walked away and just never came back. I had to literally wave down a gentleman who went to go fetch the bartender.
