Great prices for tailoring and a very professional job done. I've gotten 5 clothing items tailored here - usually hemming is $5 and hemming+tapering $10 for pants but may be a bit more if the clothing item is fancier I think. I also got a nice blazer dress tailored at the waist for $20-25 if I remember correctly? Not sure how the prices were determined for that though. Cash only, they usually ask for a deposit of half before starting the job. Idk how their speed compares to other places but for 4 pants it took them about a week. read more

I have been coming here for years and always had a good experience. I bring them everything- work blazers, designer clothes, dresses, my son's ripped shirts and jackets, a beach coverup that the tassels fell off of, a big, etc. They've done a good job with everything and I trust them with my few expensive clothing items. The price is fair. Everything takes a few days to a week so be prepared for that. If you need a rush job they may be able to do it, they did the blazers quickly for me when I had job interviews. I googled this place which was out of my way but chose it due to good reviews and i thought they would do a great job. Brought in my very expensive dress only for it to be destroyed. its very awkwardly cut and hemmed. I brought it in about a week before theysaid they could have it ready. I asked if it could be done faster and the lady there said "no" so i figured ok maybe they want to give me back the best quality work that isnt rushed. You would think it would have been perfect right? wrong. Now i dont know what to do because its too late to take it anywhere else. This was my first experience with a tailor so I was nervous but I did not need to be. I brought a dress for graduation here to get tailored and was super impressed with the work- basically the dress was shapeless all over and a bit too long, and they were able to make it fitted and right above the knee. For $10 they saved a dress that I was otherwise going to donate and now it fits great. There is a fitting room to try on the clothing then they will pin it on you to verify what it is that you want done. I recently also brought a jumpsuit to get hemmed and was very happy with it. The prices are listed when you walk in so you will know what you are getting charged ahead of time. You don't have to pay until you pick up your item. I recommend this shop! Local Washington Heights DR-run tailor, Sastreria Garcia is found off in a little alleyway on 165th St. I'm pretty sure the name translates to Garcia's Tailoring, or something to that effect. This place was shown to us by our upperclassmates, and recommended for basic sewing/alterations. So far, I've used them for minor sewing, including hemming a pair of cords. I haven't tried jeans with em yet (ie, the more complicated process of retaining the original hem), but if I ever do, I'll let you know. You can't beat the price-$3.00 for the hemmed cords. Good local service, but expect to communicate in very little English and a lot of hand gestures, unless you were prescient enough to master Spanish in your youth. read more

I found this place from others yelp reviews based on satisfaction and price. I used them a year and a half ago for a bridesmaid dress that needed to be taken in around the side seams on a multi- layered and multi-fabric dress. The work was seamless, pun intended. :) It fit perfectly and was completed within the week for $20. I just had another dress tailored last week. I accidentally waited until the last minute but called anyway. They were able to accommodate my time constraints and with a friendly manner. Again, they did a really great job and for such such an affordable price. I had the sides of a chiffon maxi dress taken in for $10. The couple who run the place are very friendly and clearly great at what they do. The aesthetics of the establishment aren't much to look at, but it's often times the hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop kind of shops that do the best work. It's not the most convenient for me, which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but I will continue to use their services as prices are more than affordable and the work is always well done and in a timely manner! Along 165th Street, you will see a yellow awning tucked away between large apartment buildings: You will almost miss it. Then you turn down the alleyway and walk all the way back to the tailor's shop - down the ramp, past the garbage and recycling. After being told by David's Bridal that I would need to pay a $25 "rush fee" to alter a bridesmaid dress in April for a June wedding, I decided to find an alternative. When I brought the dress to Sastreria Garcia on a Thursday afternoon, they took a look, measured me and asked if it would be okay to pick up the dress the following Monday. And then charged me only $20. The dress fits and looks perfect! All my clothes are coming here for tailoring from now on. read more

I have been taking my clothes to be altered for many years and I never had any problems and always happy with the results. The wife and husband are very courteous and pleasant. I got a shirt tailored here and I have no complaints. I needed the arms and sides taken in a bit and that's exactly what they did. The seams were consistent, making the shirt look as good as (well, actually better than) new. This place is kind of a hole in the wall but somehow that struck me as endearing. It's a real mom and pop establishment that wastes no time or energy on frills and thrills, only quality service at a fair price. I like it. Yes, speaking Spanish would be helpful when arranging service but not necessary. We all spoke the language of ill-fitting clothes and that was good enough to get the job done. read more

I'm really disappointed with my experience here. This being a true tailoring shop, not one of those dry cleaning/tailoring places, I expected much better. After I reading all the positive reviews on yelp, I dropped off two dresses to be hemmed and jacket for sleeve shortening. All three were pretty easy, straightforward jobs. The price was dirt cheap, $32 for everything. I walked away eagerly anticipating picking up my clothes the following week. However, the work quality did not live up to my lofty expectations. The stitching on the dress hems was uneven and the jacket sleeves had weird patches of lining sticking out. Heck if I bought a sewing machine, I'm pretty sure I could have done a better job. Guess the old adage "you get what you pay for" holds true here. read more

Stay away from this place! I needed to get a dress a little adjusted on the sides and trimmed at the bottom because it was extremely long and I am a short person. Well, I got there and I tried the dress on so the lady could see what needed to be fixed, she took my measurements and pinned the sides and the bottom of the dress with the exact measure that was going to be adjusted. Trusting these people, I got the dress a few days later and when I tried it on it was so tight that I couldn't breathe! I am being very LITERAL when I say this. The waist was so tiny that I am a size 0/00 and I couldn't fit! And on top of that the bottom of the dress was uneven, the front was a couple of inches longer than the back. Just... Don't. read more

These guys have been tailoring my clothes for years. Not only are their prices incredibly reasonable, but they do an EXCELLENT job and get me my clothes back within a day or two. I STRONGLY recommend them. Whether you need a hem done, jacket or pants taken out or pockets replaced on your old but favorite pair of jeans, these guys will do such a good job that it will look as if it was done at the factory. read more

If I could give 0 starts to this place, I would. My usual tailor was out of the country and unavailable. As a result, I had to look for another place and after looking on yelp I found this place which seemed to have very decent reviews. I had to get the hem of a jumpsuit fixed and I also had a backup dress that I took with me because the zipper was defective. I figured I would have both fixed just in case one did not work. I went in on Monday night 10/20 and they agreed to have the jumpsuit hem done as well as change the zipper on the dress by Wednesday night 10/22. When I went in on Wed night, I tried on the jumpsuit to make sure the cut was right and everything seemed fine. I did not bother to try on or look at the dress. To my surprise, I went home last night and tried on the dress and found that they did not end up touching the dress. They charged me for putting in a new zipper and they ended up not doing anything with it. The zipper was still broken and in the same condition. While I realize it's not much money ($10.00) for this alteration, it's the concept of charging a client for a service not provided and being deceitful. I caution anyone going here to check your clothes upon pick-up if you choose to use their services. I will NOT be going back here again. To me, this is stealing from the customer. read more

These guys are amazing. I just had three shirts slimmed down and I couldn't be happier. The fit is perfect, the seams are done right, the quality of work is very high, and the price was phenomenal. I honestly couldn't believe it. The people who work here are all very friendly and welcoming. Really nice folks. Don't be turned away by the entrance! Took the cuff out of some DATED suit pants and hemmed them for me...perfectly! $6 per pair (because they are lined, otherwise regular pants are $3) They do great work! Some other reviewers have said they don't speak much English and I can't say for sure as I spoke to them in Spanish. They do a very quick turn-around, I could have probably gotten it back as I waited, but I told them there was no rush and came back the following day. Very nice folks, very good work, very reasonably priced--I wish I had something similar now that I've moved back to San Fran. I decided to give this place a try because I wanted a real tailor not a dry cleaning shop. My original tailor was too far away and I recently moved to this area. After scouring the internet I read the yelp reviews and came here on 7/2/18. I needed two straps on my dress stitched. I was charged 10$ - which I think was pricey. I was told Thursday 7/5/18 it would be done. So I came Thursday and it was not done. I was told my dress was not there and asked who told me to come today as there was no return date on my slip. My name was then written down and they informed me to come back at 4pm-mind you it was about 10 a.m. and I live 20 blocks away. Therefore, I decided to come Friday and was given my dress , balled up in a bag, a wrinkled mess.Not even folded in the bag. Usually, my original tailor in East Harlem would press my items and have it on a hanger covered by clear plastic.I should have checked my dress on the spot but I didn't. Once I came home the straps were stitched correctly but they ripped a different section of my dress- this area was not ripped before, I have pics to prove that. I felt so aggravated and didn't even bother contacting them back. Sasteria Garcia didn't meet the hype. They do not keep deadlines and are careless with their work. Very strange enterence. Great place to get your things altered. Although they don't speak much English, simple English/hand gestures is perfectly fine. Tailor knows exactly what to do, he just asks simple question which is very direct. Slim or ......(long pause)? up or down? Charges are fine i guess. quotes 148 for 2 winter overcoats. 1 3 piece suit and one extra pair of pants/ all had hem, waist, sleeve, length taken in. so i guess for 25 for each is pretty good. sent it on a Friday and got it back the following. read more

This hard working tailor does excellent work. He has a cluttered den of a shop, down a ramp and at the end of an alley. Overlook the Dickensian atmosphere: he knows what he is doing and has been doing it forever. His prices are reasonable and he performs his alterations on time and right the first time. )Ignore the nasty photos that the website shows on this page. 2 stars for not screwing up my jacket and having it ready on time. I brought in my white graduation coat in to get tailored. The sleeves were about 2 inches too long, but the real issue was that I needed it pressed. I asked before I even took my coat out of it's plastic wrap if they could have it ready by Monday (it was Saturday). The lady tried to bargain with me: "how about Tuesday?" I said that it had to be ready by Monday. She conceded Monday at 6 but seemed annoyed, as if I was twisting her arm. She pinned the jacket sleeves up to be hemmed As she was doing this, I asked offhandedly if they iron. This was a formality, as I've never been to a tailor that doesn't iron. I received a flat "no" in response. What?! I'll call this my fault, since I should have asked up front and gone elsewhere, but seriously? So I'm $10 poorer for having a pair of sleeves hemmed. All these people here are saying it was $3 to get pants hemmed, so I was either overcharged, or those people were at this place years ago. They gave me back my coat jammed in a plastic grocery bag, not even properly folded, so it's even more wrinkled. It's also covered in dark lint, and the sleeves are a bit shorter than I would have liked. Going here was a waste of my time. read more

I grew up in this neighborhood and I must say I'm impressed. The entrance is a bit unusual and the place looks like a small sweatshop but given the rent for a business in Manhattan, I can't blame anyone for opening up shop wherever they can. The best part is, once you get your clothes back and see the craftsmanship of their work you completely disregard the unorthodox entrance. With friendly neighborhood prices, and good customer service you can tell it's a family-owned business with a strong community backing. I recommend this place all the way!!! read more

Got a dress hemmed here for a wedding, and was very happy with the work! It was done within a week for $28 - not dirt cheap, but very reasonable considering the fabric. It's helpful, but not necessary, to speak some Spanish while dropping off your clothes. read more

Took 6 new button down shirts and a blazer here. They did a really great job. The price is very reasonable/affordable compared to midtown. I had them take in the sides, sleeves and bottom of the shirts and they now fit perfectly. Don't be scared by having to walk through the alley looking entrance. The place was a bit hard to find, Google Maps says it's on the corner of 165th and St. Nicholas, but it's really on 165th between the wide 6 story building and the smaller 4 story one. I just moved to the area and i wear black leggings for work everyday, i kept buying more and more leggings because , as leggings usually do, they tear apart. i finally decided to give this place a shot to fix my pants, and for a low amount of 20$, they fixed 7 pairs and made them look like brand new! i am not even kidding, you cant tell there were even tears in them to begin with. I love this place because they always do an excellent job altering my scrubs, for very little money! $3 for pants and $5 for tops. I came here because of the other review of this place. They were able to mend my jeans quickly and for $3 - they did a fine job. I had walked by and never noticed the store at the end of the alley - it's a small room disguised by piles of clothing and shoes. Things are in disarray, and they had to look around a while before finding my pants, but they are very sweet and it's a fun experience. read more

They did a terrible job hemming my suit pants. It only cost $3 total but I guess you get what you pay for. They ended up too short and you can see the hemline easily. Not only is the thread very visible with puckering, they left a light line in the fabric over the hemline (where they must have ironed it with too much heat?). Horrible tailor. Rude! Bad service! My husband wanted his suit to be smaller. They made his pants look like female pants with a big sides for hips so after me explaining to them for 5 minutes that they need to do something about it he decided to fix it. This time they took way too much material off and his pants looks like legings. So it can't even be fixed anymore. Six days later, I called to check in and was told my clothes wouldn't be ready for another week. No apology. And never one phone call from them. I had to call yesterday to see if my clothes were ready. Just picked them up, and when I pointed out what had happened, I only got a smile back and a "Yes?" Never going back. read more

This place is great for easy tailoring/alteration jobs - it's a tiny nook at the end of a long and narrow path, and there are about 4 guys in there sewing away and dancing to merengue. I'm pretty sure that they speak English, although I spoke Spanish with them and got a more enthusiastic response (in that they tried to dance with me). Anyhow, they tailored my pants perfectly for $3.00, and they let me try the pants on in the store (no pre-marking) and then gave them back to me the next day. Fast, cheap, and good. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHAM. I'm unsure how this group of wildly incompetent people stay in business. They completely mangled a dress that I needed for a wedding. I had to return for three fittings; each time discovering a new botched area. I needed sleeves shortened and shoulders tightened. Simple, straightforward. On my final visit to "correct" a sleeve that had been trimmed too short and tight the main tailor had IRONED out the textured silk crepe material to get it to fit. The destruction of my expensive gown was egregious. I still have a hard time believing that they could possibly think this was a viable solution to previous errors. I left with a dress that had been completely mangled. One sleeve was absurdly ballooning and mismatched due to his incompetence. The dress that was returned to me was nothing close to what I went in with. On inspecting my dress more closely at home I also noticed that they had been so careless in taking apart seams that they also had pierced holes in the sleeve and then patched up with woven stitches. Unbelievably careless. Also of note was their extremely poor communication. I was yelled at for asking a question about why my underarm seam was a whopping 2" off of center and not aligned with bust seam. No accountability. I was yelled at repeatedly when I had not raised my voice and simply wanted assurances that they'd get it right and that I had a strict deadline. Do not go down this filthy alley and interact with this motley crew of shadowy people as they are not trained tailors or remotely versed in interpersonal skills. Vulgar and unethical is the best way to describe their behavior, actions, and words. Wouldn't wish this on anybody. My gorgeous gown is no longer wearable and am left scrambling for an alternative for a destination wedding. Nasty people; I'm in shock. read more

best tailor I've ever encountered..he's done three suit and a few jackets and all his work has been good and timely..He is pretty intuitive about how the suit should look and is quickly able to do fittings.. with a tailor like this you can get pretty much any suit off the rack and have him make it look phenomenal.. its also cheap as hell and worth the trip if your not already uptown read more

This a wonderful tailor. I moved out of the neighborhood to Brooklyn 3 months ago and still miss it. Very affordable and top notch quality. I've had pretty simple jobs done e.g., pants hemmed (yes $3 per pair, few more bucks with original hem) and straps on a dress altered, but I would give them a try for more complex jobs as well.
