Sauce on the side? More like awesomeness, great calzones and the best customer service in the side! You order at the counter, fill your own drink and they bring your food to the table. Normally I want to be seated and waited on, but this food is honestly so good I don't mind. These calzones are great--I mean really really really great. There are so many to choose from. And their salads are wonderful and fresh as well. The only thing I don't like are their plates. I know you think that's weird and I'm being picky, but they're all contemporary funky and the food slides off and my silverware ends up on the floor. I know, right???? The customer service is really stellar. You're greeted at the door, they come around to your table frequently and just do their best to make sure you have a terrific experience. If I have to order at the counter, I'll order from these folks. And the sauce. They have several different sauces to choose from and they'll even give you a couple of different ones if you ask. And--in case you didn't catch it--it's on the side in a little cup. So it won't fall off the weird plates. read more

I was so excited for this to open the second I saw it was being built, and it did NOT disappoint!!! I get the Cockadoodle Noodle, SO amazing!! I could drink the buffalo butter sauce. Yep. Loved it! One note in case you are type to just skim the reviews- do some homework on their menu before going for the first time! There are a ton of options and it's a bit much at first. Ok...I loved this place. I ordered pre-determined options from the menu- the names are escaping me but it was the most popular one and then a breakfast one. Both were delicious. I ordered as is but I could have customized if I had wanted. Looking back, I wish I had got a garlic butter side sauce.... But just because I love garlic butter, the ones that came with u were just fine. They took about 12 mins or so to make and were perfectly hot and gooey cheesy. Sodas are craft and were tasty. I wish they'd have a note on them about what they are like. The diet and regular were easy enough but the others, not so much. I'm already planning my next visit. I'll be totally prepared to make the calzone of my dreams. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, and I am so glad I did! I walked past the one downtown a few weeks ago, and I was happy to see there was one on the northside too when I searched for lunch spots after a meeting nearby. I met a friend for lunch and we were greeted by their very friendly staff, and we ordered at the counter. The bar seemed to have a lot of good options, and I will look forward to going back for dinner and drinks some time! We ordered the Roasty Toasty and the Carmen, and just split them in half and shared them. Next time, we want to try their famous one with the Mac and Cheese! I loved both and I felt like they complimented each other really well. I loved how cheesy they both were and the flavor combinations were really tasty. I liked the Carmen a little better than the Roasty Toasty which was somewhat surprising to me because of how much I love pesto. After looking at the menu, I don't think there's a bad choice. I also was pleasantly surprised by how fresh, light, and fluffy the dough was. I really loved dipping in the pesto and the garlic butter! My one complaint is that it took 25+ minutes to get our food when it seemed like other people were getting theirs much faster. For people who have a rigid lunch hour, this may not be the best choice for that reason. Like I said though, maybe that's not normal for their lunch time rush. I'm going to have to try this after COVID-19 has died down, as I think the takeout experience wasn't a great first attempt at dining here. The GF and I ordered these via the website a few weeks ago, and the menu was a little confusing. I ordered the Cock-a-Doodle Noodle, and she had the Carmen. On the website menu, each calzone is listed with a recommended sauce. What is not abundantly clear is that this sauce must be ordered as an add-on. We drove about 15-20 minutes from home to try out this novel idea. The pickup was easy, no hassle, and the cashier was friendly. Got back home and saw monstrous calzones... without any sauce. In retrospect, I'm a little bummed that the cashier didn't throw out a final "Hey, you dummies came to a place called 'Sauce on the Side' and didn't get any sauce on the side. Everything okay?" Lesson learned. The portion sizes were reasonable, and the ingredients were delicious. However, they were a little on the dry side -- you know... sauce. Regardless, I'll try it again, when I'm more comfortable dining in. I imagine being able to sample several sauces amongst people at the table would enhance the experience, that was already a good one. Just not a great one. read more

Pretty cool concept! I did build your own calzone and the apple pie dessert. Few things that made this place pretty cool: 1) The staff: when I walked in we had a person ready to go to explain their concept of sauce on the side and how to order. Also staff that check in while I was eating and started a friendly conversation. 2) The outside seating was awesome. Their is not a whole lot places around Carmel that has that. Plus, they have their own bar! Can't wait to go their and watch some football. 3) The food is delicious! They told me that they make their own bread for the calzone. We were so disappointed in the ordering/service, the beer and the food. We had such high hopes. Service: We stopped in to place a to go order. The guy that took our order implied we could have soda's while we waited. Many restaurants provide this service with no charge. Not this place. He proceeded to ring up the drinks on our order. Luckily we realized this and had him remove them. There was no place to stand to wait for our order. We seemed to be in the way no matter where we were. Servers had to navigate around us at the order up area or people coming in kept thinking we were in line to place our order. We moved to the bar and found there was no bartender. We finally moved to an available table and the guy who took our order failed to bring us the large salad we ordered. We had to send him back to get it. Enough! Beer: A place that advertises beer should offer more than 12 draft choices. Especially when all the offerings had low ABV. But you wouldn't know it from their abbreviated beer menu. ABV's weren't listed - unbelievably PRICES weren't listed - descriptions of the offerings were missing as well. I guess it didn't matter much since there was no barkeep to take our orders anyway. The guy who took our food order told us he didn't know the prices of the beer just that it was "between $5 and $7". That was when I noticed the one patron at the bar drinking beer out of a 12oz glass which clearly is the largest glass they offer. Enough! Food: The biggest disappointment. We ordered a large smokehouse salad. $8 for a salad composed primarily of iceberg lettuce is ridiculous. Then they short-changed us by providing only one small cup of dressing which wasn't enough. Then repeated their cheapness by not providing sufficient marinara sauce for the calzones. One small cup was barely enough for 1/2 the calzone. The "sauce on the side" is critical because the calzones taste mostly like bread dough. The fillers were stuffed only in the very middle. Bite after bite of lonely bread dough. Enough! read more

The service is excellent here. Immediately when walking through the door you are helped and taken care of. The wait is usually not very long and the atmosphere is nice. If you are waiting outside during the winter, there are nice heaters that keep you warm while you wait to be seated. The vibe calming and cozy, perfect for a date or a night with your friends. The food is also delicious. The only thing is that the food is a bit rich, but totally worth it. The price is also fairly reasonable and not too expensive. This is such a nice place to eat and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Every time my family visits me in college we make an effort to eat here. It is in a great location in Broad Ripple. The calzones are also delicious here, my favorite is the Fatty B. So good!!! It is filled and bursting with meet and cheese. We really enjoyed our lunch here yesterday! My friend and I shared the beet salad and the duke calzone. The beet salad was good but actually a little spicy. Seemed like too much black pepper, maybe. But it was still good. And it was golden beets instead of red beets which I wasn't expecting. Overall good though. And then the duke calzone was kind of a bbq chicken calzone and tasted great. Sauce on the Side is such a fun concept! You usually think of pizza-esque calzones, but Sauce on the Side has tons of diffferent kinds! Italian, veggie, mexican, etc. I got the figgy piggy and it was the delicious! The saltiness from the bacon and the sweetness from the figs worked so well together. The calzones are huge which is great... you'll definitely leave full and maybe even have leftovers. We also got the carmel apple calzone for dessert and oh my lanta. I dug into it before I could even take a picture. Overall, good food, quick service, and good prices. In a sea of upscale burger and pizza joints in this area, it's nice to find something a little different. Sauce on the Side is a welcome addition to the Carmel dining scene. There's a fun, sports bar kind of vibe inside. It would be a great place to watch a game. The menu is pretty straightforward. They have calzones, stuffed with every combination you can possibly imagine, a few you never imagined, and they have salads. I've been a few times and my favorite so far is The Duke, their BBQ chicken calzone stuffed with corn, bacon and cheese with a BBQ Ranch dipping sauce. Everything is made to order and top quality. These calzones are HUGE. The salads are HUGE. Come hungry! My one request is that I wish there was some sort of lunch special where you could get a small calzone and a small salad as a combo. read more

The Italian salad was unbelievably generous and fresh. Dressed perfectly with lots of salami, olives and cheese, The half salad is enough with anything else. Good selection of draft beer and a few wines and ale. My calzone was the Meet me in St. Louie. The iced tea is fresh brewed and very good . Our food came quickly . The portions are very large . My husbands was delicious. If you like mushrooms you should try the magic carpet ride . Mine was good not great but very good the thing that brought it down a notch was the sauce . The sauce has a nice kick ruined by the excessive use of oregano. Oregano dominates it to the point of drowning out all other flavors like the tomato . Sauce on the Side stays true to its name, offering a large variety of sauces to complement both "specialty" calzones and "The Fold" which is more of a build-your-own. We ate a couple of times at this place. Mostly take outs due to covid-19. We got some takeouts 4 calzones. Came home and I don't know what happened but they didn't taste like anything before. Just ordered a Large Italian Salad for lunch. It is huge! Very good flavor. All of the ingredients are fresh. Generous portions of red pepper strips, artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes and several other toppings. I did not add chicken and there's plenty to eat without it. But it would probably be a great addition. The dressing was also very flavorful and there was enough to coat everything. Everything I've had here has been good.
