This place was phenomenal. I know it's local to the St. Louis area, and my wife and I were exploring in Clayton a little bit and there were quite a few pizza/Italian places around. Luckily, we picked this place. We went in, and there was a bit of a line, and it was a challenge finding a place to sit, but we managed to find a spot for the two of us. We both got calzones and were not disappointed in the least. I got the Meat Me in St. Louie, and my wife got the cock-a-doodle noodle. Both were really good, and were paired with the best "sauce on the side". The Meat Me was a little greasy, which didn't bother me at all, but just be forewarned if that kind of stuff bothers you, probably shouldn't go for that particular calzone. As I walk in I am bombarded with a new sense of disgust. The style is Art Deco, and the wall art reminds me of something you would see off pbs kids. After the kind worker takes my order I see something that chills my heart, a hipster soda fountain..... Each flavor is something unheard of and unsatisfying. They forgot to give me an order number so my order went to a different table, this I don't mind. What bugs me is that the telephone that rings every minute and is loud enough to wake up my dead grandmother. Now the food is decent. I ordered cock a doodle noodle. The macaroni is smooth and soft. while the bread is crunchy and fresh. The sauce though was tangy and ruined the calzone. Overall I give this place 2 stars. The food was decent and I would go as far to say good. The sauce that was paired with it on the other hand was not. I am excited to see how this establishment takes hold and hope they franchise. Because at this point I only see sauce on the side competing with fast food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King. read more

Wow, the Meat Me In Saint Louie is something special! Having sampled quite a few calzones, I keep coming back for the ooey-gooey cheese and meat nirvana that is their most meaty option. The Magic Carpet Ride calzone (mushrooms & cheese) had a good base, but seemed to need something else to really make it shine. The Putenesca (capers, chicken, basil, cheese) calzone had a fun assortment of brined things and chicken, but the poultry was a smidge tough. Highly recommend the Meat Me in Saint Louie! read more

Yep, that good. Best calzones I have ever had. They offer a great selections of specialty calzones or you can make your own with a range of dipping sauces. My one complaint is how long it takes between ordering and actually getting your food. This last time I was there, I had to run out while waiting just to feed the meter. I finally tried Sauce on the Side after hearing so many positive things about it. I walked in to place an order around 11am and there was no wait at that time. The restaurant was very clean and has an open atmosphere. I created my own calzone from a huge variety of ingredients they have to offer. Since I ordered it to-go, I inquired as to how long the wait would be and was told about 10-15 minutes. I waited about 10 minutes and it was ready. I walked a few blocks back to my work place and the calzone was still hot. I was amazed a the size of the calzone...it was much bigger than I expected. In fact, I could not finish it by myself. The calzone had a great flavor and was cooked perfectly. I am anxious to go back and try more items, such as their salads (the strawberry fields salad looks great in photos other people posted on Yelp). read more

I'm honestly impressed by the level of customer service my friend and I received last night. The staff was so friendly and helpful while helping us customize our calzone. We ordered a meet me in St. Louie calzone and a large Italian salad. Enough for the two of us to share. I recommend also getting the garlic butter sauce on the side in addition to the marinara. We added onion and green pepper to the calzone and it was just the perfect amount of toppings to bread ratio. A staff member checked on us during the meal and then came back to clear the table. Pretty impressive for an order at the counter pizza joint. I also noted the fun music playing in the background. I've also tried the roasty toasty and the Duke calzones and you can do no wrong! My only regret this trip is that I didn't get a picture which speaks to deliciousness of their food! 10/10 for flavor and 10/10 for customer service! read more

Me and my boyfriend decided to check out Sauce On the Side after hearing some great things from friends and an ad on the radio. We went to the Clayton location and I got the duke and added artichokes. My boyfriend got the meat me in at Louie. We loved the food and the eclectic artsy atmosphere. Not only was the food delicious but unique as was the restaurant itself. My boyfriend mentioned that he thought it would be cool if they had their sauces on the table like sugar fire does so you can try all of them at once. You might have to pay a little more for the food you get but the quality is worth it. We go here more than I'd like to admit. The food is consistently delicious, they have a great beer selection, and the staff is super friendly. The last time we went, my calzone lost the bottom crust while it was being made. They brought that one out, told us what happened, and said that they already had a new one in the oven and would box it up for us if we wanted. A free calzone! Any other place either wouldn't have told me that the bottom was missing, or would have reluctantly asked if we wanted another one made instead of taking the initiative to make the situation right. I cannot believe that this week was my first visit to Sauce on the Side. first of all, a calzone restaurant is a great concept, and one that is executed with true attention to detail. the sauce IS on the side, which is weird at first but then quite enjoyable. The Magic Carpet Ride calzone is absolutely the best calzone I've ever eaten, quite possibly some of he best pizza I've ever eaten and almost certainly would be a fave of the calzone-king, Ben, played by Adam Scott in Parks and Rec. no, I am not being paid to say that, it's just that the mushrooms were meaty and fleshy and umami and moist, complementing the salty cheese and crust perfectly. I would have a hard time not getting that exact one again on a second visit but I know I should try something else ! read more
