"Absence makes the heart grow fonder... (or in this case the stomach grow hungrier!)" I've done Sauce on the Side before, as they delivered calzones to the office and we did staff lunch using them (at least back when I was on that part of the staff) and they were as I recall "agonizingly delicious" calzones. So, I figured, I've got to do it again, this time to make sure my memory was clear and correct. And since one of their more recent locations was right by my office.. AND i had just got paid. Why not, right? Anyway, we're going to keep this one kinda short and sweet, since I didn't do a dine in, but rather another grab and go... (yet, again I forgot the foodie pictures! what's wrong with me? I remember to get buildings and backgrounds and forget the important part!) Small smokehouse salad and the monthly special for August. Gyros style Calzone! (yes, only one special runs for a whole month, so when Sept 1st rolls around, the Gyros are gone!). Now I'm going to say plain and simple the food was as good as I remember (I think before I became a Yelpie foodie person, it was "always Chicken Doodle" calzones. I got in a comfort zone, but with my obligations to be as entertaining as possible (at least I hope these are), I had to go for the monthly special for something different... So see Yelpsters: Variety makes you a better food critic. NO more same ol' same ol' or me anymore either. Risk take I will! (remember to read that last line in a Yoda accent, makes it work better (I Hope)!) As for the restaurant of SOTS itself, it's reasonably spacious, three TV's and a little bit of artwork for the walls.. Just the perfect lunch time from work, or afterwork dinner spot or a quick meal. The waitress you could tell was ready to get out of there for the night, but she tried with a smile (so "thumbs up" to her) Anyway, I will say the calzones and salads were as good as I remember them, but surprisingly I will say .. they're not as big as I remember? I just used to remember the calzones delivered to the office felt larger while these, as well packed as they are, didn't seem as big. But that's my _only_ complaint with any SOTS calzone, because they are stuffed to the 'rafters' with the contents and the salads look and feel about what i remember. (so no punishment for the 'feeling' of small.). Serving time was about 13 minutes, but that never bothers me much anymore, being a patient "old man". I got all the time in the world to savor the good things in life. And SOTS Calzone's _are_ one of those good things in life and while the "fonder" wasn't what I recall, this is still one of the best lunch / dinner stops for anyone in the area. And that's saying something, since I've got a few more Creve Coeur locations I have to start preparing a memory trip for! read more

This restaurant serves the best calzones! The dough has a tremendous amount of flavor, and the fillings enhances the tremendous flavor. The sauce is served on the side (hence the restaurant name), and the sauce has a very bold and spicy flavor. The staff (Jenny is incredible, she is so friendly and helpful) are superb. After running a few errands, I was ready to grab something to eat. My partner in crime suggested Sauce on the Side, and since it was just down the street, I was all in. They have a new Pick Two special where you can choose any two items from a selection of 3-bite sides, a salad, or a mini calzone. I went with the Smokehouse Salad and a mini Figgy Piggy, while my partner in crime ordered the Roasty Toasty. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and just the right portion for lunch. The staff is friendly and the place is clean, but the calzones feel a bit doughy and the toppings could use some tweaking--like dicing the white onions instead of leaving them in big chunks. I was browsing the menu and saw they had a two for 15 dollar special on certain menu items, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I got the mini roasty toasty with no ricotta and no onions, the Caesar salad with no onions, and the mini s'mores. Usually they're pretty thorough but today, not so much. I got it to-go and did a brief glance over before I got home. Once I got home and bit into the first bite of my calzone, I tasted the two things I specifically asked NOT to have: ricotta and onions. I decided to peel back because I thought maybe it was a one-off, but the whole calzone was covered in it. At that point, I double checked and the receipt says my modifications and even the sticker on the box had it. I'm not sure how or why the directions weren't followed but it's dares me to ask, why allow modifications in the first place if they're not going to be followed? The dessert on the other hand was a bit much. So much so that I could taste the sugar with each bite and for someone that has a sweet tooth, that's where I draw the line. Recently ordered catering for 10 from SOTS and everyone really enjoyed the box lunch pick 2 options! I went with the mini canzone and the Italian salad and I was shocked at how much food it was! I was expecting a small salad but seemed like a full salad yo me which was awesome because I was able to take home half of my food for lunch the next day. I've been to this Sauce on the Side at least 3 times and I'm no stranger to the others. These calzones are always so hot and delicious. The best thing is: they have Provel! I usually get the fold, which is the build-your-own option. It ends up being expensive. I am responsible for this and I won't remove a star because of it. I get Provel, red sauce or queso, and something like onion, arugula, and parmesan on top. The food comes out pretty quickly. You order at the counter. It's a rather busy place, but I've never struggled to find a seat because the dining area is so large. read more

Good ol Sauce on the Side is in Creve Coeur! Came here on a Monday Night, and there was tons of seating and space for people to relax and enjoy a few calzones. We ended up ordering 3 Calzones and their salad. Loved all of them, the one on special right now (basically a philly cheese steak) was extra juicy (but tasted great) so the calzone dough started to get pretty wet. The other 2 we ordered were perfect. Not too saucy, but still flavorful and delicious. We also got their bbq salad (large) and they split it for us into 2 plates and it was still a big portion. I got the Skinny V (100% Vegan!) and my partner got the Hot Mother Clucker. Both calzones came out in less than 10 minutes and were devoured in about the same time. I was very pleasantly surprised by the vegan mozzarella and vegan pepperoni in the Skinny V as it was melty like real cheese and the pepperonis had the perfect balance of savory and spices. The staff recommended the Caramel Apple Pie calzone for dessert and placed it to arrive 15 minutes later. The pie was massive and well balanced, not overwhelmingly sweet. Sauce on the side is one of my top favorite dinner spots! I started eating here years ago and nothing about it has changed. I always get the meat me in st. Louie, which is a pretty classic calzone, which comes with the meat sauce, but I always buy a queso, which is really good. The calzone usually fills me up and it always filled generously. I haven't tried any other ones, but I'm sure they are just as good. They also have dessert calzones, which I haven't been able to try just yet either the staff is super nice and informative about the different options, because there's lot. These Calzones serve as a two-night feast for our family members. The Salads are not to be missed. The salads often serve as my whole meal. I love that you can add a protein like chicken to the salads. All of their sauces and salad dressings are homemade. Favorite Calzones are the Meat Me in St. Louie, Figgy Piggie, The Fold, and The Hot Mother Clucker (February Special of the Month). Favorite Salads are the Strawberry Fields, Zen Garden, and The Smokehouse. Both the Salads and Calzones hold up well for take out and even eating later in the day/evening from your pick up time.
