The staff was doing their best to accommodate everyone and keep things moving in a timely fashion, even though they were pretty busy. When you're single, there's almost always room at the bar, so I squeezed in and ordered a drink I've been partial to lately. The barback had no idea what I was talking about, but no worries. He asked the female bartender, she Googled it, and she made it wonderfully! I forgot to mention that I like my drink served up, martini style, so I ended up having it with ice this time. No big deal because it was still made amazingly and tasted great. And while we're talking about ice, I'm the same way with my water. I like my water COLD, but I do not want ice in it. Then came the $10 burger and fries, and let me tell you, I was NOT expecting what came out. For $10, I assumed I was getting some tiny slider-sized burger, but nope! Out came this BIG ASS burger with a gorgeous pile of fries. I was shocked! And even better, both the burger and fries tasted great. I am so full right now I can hardly breathe!!! Great vibe, decent food. Basso is so cool because it's underground! You walk down a big staircase into a dark-lit restaurant with a variety of seating. The bar takes up the most space to the right with the main seating and there's an open kitchen to the left you pass by the restrooms. Gas lanterns line the walls with booths surrounding the bar. Service is prompt and professional. Their menu consists of wood-fired pizzas, pastas, and Mediterranean appetizers. Their happy hour menu features their popular burger and fries and Margherita pizza. We ordered the cocktails Alice a vodka drink and Secret Door a bourbon drink. Food was good but not super memorable. The mixed olives and cannellini dip appetizers weren't the star of the show but enjoyed the beef carpaccio appetizer more. Our table ordered a Mushroom + Truffle pizza with duck egg on it which was unique. Our entrees were probably the best: Lemon Ricotta Ravioli and Ricotta Gnocchi. Basso is such a hidden gem! The interior is warm and cozy with dim lighting and its of open flame. They had a fireplace going as well which gave a cozy bonfire feel. Our server was so sweet with giving us suggestions and ensuring we enjoyed all of our food. She checked back frequently and was so fun. We got the truffle fries, bread with dipping oil, and carpaccio to start. All of it was PACKED with flavor. Of the apps, the carpaccio was my fave. The food looks really good and lacks an element of seasoning. We are big pasta people so we enjoy robust flavors and richness. While it wasn't lacking in richness, we needed something else to tie everything in. My Shrimp pasta was spicy (as we were told) but it seemed like the spice was intended to carry the dish. The shaved Parmesan was a nice touch but lacked again in flavor profile. It might've been an oversight but my noodles were on the harder side most of the time bites. The Papperdelle as the same.. they might be leaning on the nuance and forgetting to bring in more boldness with the flavors. The Lemon ricotta ravioli looks like it's a fan fave so I plan to go back and try that and maybe the spumoni sundae. 10/10 for the tiramisu! read more

First time here and was impressed overall with the cozy dark vibe and espresso martini. The martini was 10 out of 10 a true classic espresso martini. We went with a larger group so we could not be seated at a normal table, we were placed in the lounge area with couches and a coffee table to eat our meal. I was thankful they were able to accommodate our group same day, but it would've been more relaxed and enjoyable if we were actually at a table. The food was underwhelming, we got the gnocchi and pepperoni pizza, our group got the lemon ravioli and the emo cover band pizza and cesar salad. I hadn't been here in years. Went with my friend about a week ago then took my niece again the next week; probably one of the best meals I've had recently. The cauliflower was AMAZING, roasted with some sort of light cream sauce. Then the bread and dipping oil. That has several things in it and all of them are tasty. And I usually bet the cacio e pepe. It is made with a higher grade of ground beef and garnished with giardeniera relish, fontina and crispy onions. Highly recommend. Others tried the meatballs and cannelloni dip. If you like a gorgeous and unique bar area with amazing old school touches - yes. This is the place. If you like parking in a garage that was built before your grandparents were born- yes this place is for you. However- we had a lot of trouble with service. I don't know why but every time our waitress walked by our table, regardless of our "excuse us ma'am's " we were ignored. The space is cool, it's like an underground bar located next to the Starbucks , it's a little dark and the flame / candle holder near us was not working and unfortunately making a zapping sound right above us all night Our server was sweet and helpful and the food didn't take too long to come out once we ordered . We had the Carpaccio , truffle fries, lemon ricotta ravioli and Mafalada. The carpaccio was good overall, a little hard to eat how it was presented. Everything else just didn't come out hot. Our fries were cold and kinda tasted stale or old, we asked for hot fries and they brought out more and unfortunately they still didn't taste all that good, I wonder if they make their own fries? Our pasta was also not hot. It was made well, the sauce on both was good. The Mafalda had good flavor and the Ravioli was very lemony, but it was all too luke warm. Wow, I can't believe it took me this long to eat here! We came at 4:30 on a Friday for happy hour and it was pleasantly busy. I walked right in, but they do have an option to add your name to the wait list. It was very dark, moody, and charming. Candles at each table and scones around! Note: you do have to take stairs to get downstairs where the restaurant is (I don't know if there is an elevator available). I got the burger and fries on the happy hour menu, my friend and I split the cannellini dip! She got the meatballs as her meal. We both enjoyed our food. Came to Basso on a chilly winter night and the vibes were so cute. I love how I had to go downstairs to get to it! The truffle fries are a must, every bite of it had so much flavor to it. Our service was speedy and accommodating. If you're someone who gets overstimulated easily, this place might be a little too loud and too dark for you. It's dark, warm from the wood-fire oven, and lined with booths around the parameter. The space is open and feels lively, but is never too loud. It's the perfect spot when you want human connection and the buzz summertime often brings, but is harder to obtain in the colder months. Not to mention they have a fantastic happy hour Monday-Friday 4-6 p.m., featuring some of their best dishes at discounted prices. The staff is friendly as well. Second time at Basso and I was even more impressed with the overall business operation. They obviously have strong management. The location is just off Highway 64 and not far from Washington University campus. The easiest identifier is the huge AAMCO sign. Parking is free surface or parking garage connected to another business is also free. The garage is eek, but works. I noticed they had security in the lot. The restaurant is below ground and has an amazing dark lighting atmosphere. It's part fancy with fireplace, part group dining with two tables that seat 20 and part sports bar that's in the center with probably over 20 TV's. It's a beauty. The kitchen is open and you can see the pizza ovens cranking out pies. The overall generates a warm and cozy that's comfortable for dressy or casual occasions. My first visit was two in a booth. Exceptional service and food. This was over seven months ago. The steak was magnificent! My second and recent days ago was a party of 45. This was an impromptu gathering that the staff pulled off for us in the back. 95% of our party was together, others in nearby booths. The service was exceptional. Most ordered drinks, small bites and pizzas. I had a 15 year Old Fashioned which was scrumptious! Also enjoyed lamb balls and truffle fries. Basso is known for a large wine selection which many took advantage of with yummy margarita pizza. They have a cellar. The checkout was shockingly smooth for a large group. Oh Basso, you have my heart! I met a friend here for Happy Hour and was beyond impressed with the food, service, and drinks. We sat near the fireplace and had the perfect amount of space. We were promptly greeted by our server and were given water while we decided what to get. We decided to take advantage of the happy hour menu, so my friend got a Yuengling and I tried the red sangria. The sangria was pretty good but I felt like I wanted something more. While we both decided on our next drinks, we got an order of crispy meatballs and a margherita pizza. The crispy meatballs came out first and were perfect. I noticed they had a little more breading than usual, which made them difficult to cut. Nevertheless, they were soft on the inside, which is what I was hoping for. They paired great with the dipping sauce. Shortly after we finished the meatballs the pizza arrived. If you're not familiar, they make their pizzas wood-fired, so they all have a nice char; not too burnt but what I'd describe as just right. It's a good size pizza for two people and will def. keep you full. I went with the Alice for my last drink because I wanted a little something sweet and it didn't disappoint. I'd describe it as light and the blackberry was a nice touch. Our server was amazing as she was always around to keep our water cups full and checking to see if there was anything else we needed. We sat in the lounge seats because upon making the reservation that was all that was available. It ended up being fine but sitting at a table would've been easier for eating. I got the calamari for an appetizer and basically tried a little of everything. The calamari was good. Was it the best I've ever had no, but was it better than average yes! I was not a fan of the Pappardelle so I ended up with the Mafalda. That was really good. I enjoyed the little lasagna noodles with it. They did charge a large party gratuity but Alec was so personable and attentive that I'm sure he ended up with extra around the table or at least from me. Our server was on top of our orders throughout the evening and she also ensured we did not miss the cut off for the happy hour menu which we truly appreciate. We asked her if the bar could do mocktails and she asked what we typically like. They ended up bringing us mocktail fruit spritzes which were quite nice! We were there in time for happy hour, so we started off with some happy hour meatballs and Brussels sprouts. Both were tasty! For entrees, we got the ricotta gnocchi and pepperoni pizza. The gnocchi was just okay in my opinion, as it was paired with beef cheek which tasted like pot roast. It was an interesting combo with the gnocchi and I'm not sure I would order it again.
