We had a great stay with Savage River Lodge March 22-25, 2023. The road in was a little treacherous. Very secluded. Beautiful lodge. It was midweek and we had the ENTIRE place to ourselves. We stayed in cabin 10 and it was fantastic. Great loft and king size bed, wonderful linens, great bathroom, nice porch. A higher-quality coffee machine would be nice. It was so great to get away from Baltimore and enjoy the peaceful serenity of W. Maryland and WV. We wish there had been more staff and people around but we made the best of the area by visiting Frostburg and many local restaurants and coffee shops. This place is closed for now but might reopen under state ownership. read more

Had the absolute best Christmas / birthday dinner here! As someone whose birthday is on Christmas Day, it can be so hard to find a place open for a special evening, but I am so glad my mom recommended Savage River Lodge--one of the best birthday dinners I've had in a while! Walking in, the ambiance was cozy and rustic with a large festive decorated tree and a roaring fireplace. The menu was pretty extensive and had a lot of options to choose from. Although they were out of a few options we tried to order, our server was SO KIND and comped a bottle of wine for us, which truly just was above and beyond service. Everything we ordered was delicious! The crab dip, the steak frites, the salmon + Cajun risotto, and the pinot noir were all excellent. Only -1 star because the road to get here is not for the faint of heart! It is essentially 1.5 miles of narrow backroads, with a lot of pot holes, and in the pitch black December night it was a bit worrisome to drive. I 100% recommend having an SUV to get here. Hopefully they will be able to make some improvements to the road because it is not in great shape. read more

Coming to SRL has been on my personal list for quite a long time - I've always wanted to stay during fall, and then get snowed in during winter... so needless to say staying on March Madness weekend was exactly the right call by me. This review is for the lodge and the yurt - we stayed two nights. In other reviews one issue raised was a lack of customer service - my experience didn't reflect that. In fact being able to text issues or questions like you would anyone else was very convenient. My questions were answered quickly. With the yurt - it took some time to get used to - I wish I would have brought snacks especially the first night and then during days in between meals. But that's on me. The yurt was very spacious for the two of us - nice warm floors and even though it's a glorified teepee with a skeleton - I liked it a lot. In fact at times - I had to turn off the little stove heater. Bathroom was nice and spacious, but it's just a room that isn't cut off from the rest of the yurt totally so that was odd to get used to. Bed was comfortable by my standards. The breakfast is delivered to you in a lunch box - which at first I thought would be goofy but I really appreciated - food was good, our French press coffee was lit working right (I've used them before) and they out creamers in fridge which froze. DEFINITELY BRING SNACKS AND COFFEE CREAMER! I really appreciated the seclusion by the one text away service. We did the whiskey in the woods event and hiked etc. it was good - not sure of the price point though. Really rough for a tasting. We stopped for happy hour - which was ok, and walked down to the gift shop which hasn't been restocked and was really depressing. As for the Lodge and dinner - we had dinner on a Saturday at 7pm. We were sat immediately, but it was odd how the chairs had wheels and I kept feeling like I kept drifting away from the table. We ordered the crab dip as well as the maple Brie. Both came LOADED with baguette chips - and tasted good. Though the maple glaze hardened quickly while waiting on the Brie to got from molten to a palatable temp. I decided to play it safe and get the filet - which was fine, but only came with a starch OR veg. Huh? I can't get both? Let me *checks bill again* yeah I think for the sticker I can get vegetables too. For dessert I went with the cheesecake which was no-bake, which for me is a no-no. Still tasted good. Our waitress was an underage girl (I know that bc my mixed drink took longer waiting on bartender to serve), very nice and friendly. I would recommend - they do need to invest in better coffee - like Basecamp. read more

No issues to me! I had been here decades ago as a kid for Easter Brunch, since then maybe once more outside on the patio. This time here, though, was the best time. Food was excellent at every turn. Everything I had was delectable. The yurt experience was pretty cool although I am almost certain my skin reacted to the body wash provided - either that or the unseasonably odd weather. I liked that the breakfast was delivered to us in a little cooler and discrete on the porch but the side by side they used to deliver to yurts def is loud at 7 am. :) I kind of wanted to sleep in just a few more minutes. The wind WHIPPEEEDD that one night and it was distracting so make sure wind is not really on the menu unless you can sleep through it then you're fine. I was off put by the reception at happy hour. not enough comfortable seating and a little distracting by the population who are "Regulars" and it just kind of hit me the wrong way. I was able to get a drink or two without being totally distracted and wanting to go back to the yurt but also the wifi was non existent in the happy hour for the unsociable me. I would consider adding at least one TV somewhere and then taking it down during march madness and after its over LOL for the basketball fanatic couple that we are although we do want to be able to try places like these at the same time. I think that the heated floors were the coolest along with the whiskey trail which I was afraid of but did rather well if I do say so myself. I really think I can interact with these cool women who city slickers. (LOL jk) I didnt have to this day which was great. I kept to myself. I really enjoyed this trip and would love to see some upgrades to the entrance as it permits. read more

Our visit to SRL was incredible! So many things to highlight but first and foremost is the staff. We interacted with about 10 employees, and each one was kind, helpful, and cared that we enjoyed our stay. We made the 3 hour drive from DC and didn't have to touch our keys again until the long weekend was over. We filled our days by spending time out on the trails, eating and drinking at the lodge, and enjoying the peace of the yurt. SRL makes it very simple and easy to just show up, not have to bring much, and enjoy the weekend. Morning breakfast delivery was delightful - although the science of eggs and cheese mean that breakfast burrito is not the best choice. The coffee station in the yurt was great, and I'm someone who needs a strong cup. Lunch pickup at the lodge was convenient - I highly recommend the turkey club. Dinner at the lodge had several great options - crab dip, maple brie, filet, and scallops were some favorites. Can't recommend this place enough, so if you're considering then hopefully this gives you the push to book, make the trip, and enjoy the beautiful views and experience that SRL has to offer read more

My husband and I stayed here almost two years ago and fell in love! We were determined to visit again, and we did over New Years. It was a good way to go away/get a change of scenery but still be safe. They have no contact check in/check out and food delivery. The food at the lodge is still good and arrived hot every night at our doorstep. Two out of three nights we initially got the wrong order, but the situation was remedied very quickly. My one negative and the reason I docked a star- the yurts are supposed to be high-end and I believe they are on the select registry; to stay here is not cheap. I definitely feel like for what we paid there are some repairs that need to be made. For example, there was a section of the laminate floor that had warped and peeled up; it definitely could've hurt someone if they weren't paying attention. The gas stove wasn't working, which they warned us about before we arrived. One of the bedside lamps had broken badly and they just turned it around so you couldn't see it from the front. I also get that COVID is going on, so maybe it's hard to get someone in for repairs. Ultimately, minor things that won't stop us from coming back, but for a luxury lodge/inn things that should be addressed. read more

Came to celebrate significant other's birthday...I'm not sure if due to COVID but felt a bit disappointed. The Good: The Yurt (#7) was absolutely beautiful. We really loved the decor and felt very comfortable. King size bed was firm but comfortable and bathroom was nice. My company was amazing and we had a great time. Everything is what you make it. The Bad: At $300 per night, I expected more attention to details and less cut corners. For example, coffee was in sandwich bags instead of being either pre-packaged or put in some kind of jar. Paper plates, cups and spoons were provided but No forks or knives. Ordered a breakfast upgrade and bailey's Irish cream. They delivered but No fork, salt/pepper, etc. Irish cream came in a glass (why No labeled mini bottle)? We put trash can out on porch for pick up and it was picked up but No bag was left for us to use in the can. Went to lodge and would expect that staff would at least greet or speak to guests in passing. Nope. Food wasn't great either but I recognize limited menu. None of these may seem like a big deal but hospitality is usually about the little details. And being that this isn't a budget rate motel, I would expect more. Very nice yurt and maybe a good experience when not COVID...if services are slashed, Prices should be slashed as well? Long drive and experience left much to be desired. read more

5 star for the spectacular property, out of this world yurts, and friendly service. The lodge restaurant, though, is really more of a 2.5/3 star. It's passable, but unremarkable and could use some work. The yurts are probably the nicest you can find anywhere -- beautiful wood floors, wood lattice walls, with a full bathroom with a solid shower, over 800 square feet of space, the comfiest of beds, with a gas fireplace to provide some heat along with the radiant heat from the floor, a huge leather sofa, and a small dining area with a sink and mini fridge, and the fixin's for coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. You can hear folks in nearby yurts, but they're yurts! You can also hear the birds chirping away and can open up the doors and windows so it feels like you're outside and you can really take in the fresh air and beautiful nearby greenery. There's also an outdoor patio with a couple of chairs where you can lounge and read. The lodge is rustic and cozy, with plenty of room to lounge about inside by the fireplace, outside overlooking the trails, or at night, by the large campfire, which is a great way to meet your fellow guests. There's a large dining room. Reservations appear to be required. The food was just alright, but there is a huge wine menu and a full bar. The best thing we had was the house chorizo and potato soup. The mussels were alright but not the freshest, the shepherd's pie quite soupy and oily, and the fish in the fish and chips was fine, but the chips were pretty limp. Still, we liked it enough to come for a second night as it's a bit of a drive to go anywhere else. Breakfast is included. There's a muffin and OJ delivery every morning at 8:30 am (it's supposed to be 10 am on Sunday but it seemed to come early when we stayed there). You can request it early the night before. Great massages available here and they come to your yurt/cabin. While we went for the yurts, others told us the cabins are lovely as well. We may try that on another visit! Finally, they have electric chargers for cars, including a Tesla charger, and they're solar-powered which is super awesome! read more

We had a fantastic stay in Yurt #3. Large enough to fit a king sized bed, two comfortable reading charts, a gas-burning stove, a breakfast table, a wet bar, and a bathroom, it was substantially more comfortable than my previous yurt experience in Big Sur. If you've never stayed in a yurt before, don't forget that it's basically a tent, albeit a very fancy one, meaning there's little sound insulation. Because the yurts are ~30 feet from one another, quiet hours start at 9 PM. The lodge is charming. A beautiful wood building with an indoor bar and dining room, it features an outdoor patio for lounging and dining. Just beyond is a fire pit, where you can sit by a fire tended by the lodge's owner. We ordered massages ahead of time. I'd recommend it. The food at the lodge stands in stark contrast to the rest of the experience. On the savory front, the Caesar Salad was fine, but the Shepherd's Pie left something to be desired. Although the lamb was high quality, the dish was really more of a soup than a pie. Instead of having a potato "crust," there was a dollop of potato in the center of a lamb soup. For dessert, I ordered cherry pie with ice cream, thinking it would be hard to mess up. But I was wrong - both the pie and ice cream arrived nearly frozen. And the server was surprised that I wanted the pie to be heated to at least room temperature. I was excited to learn that there are two free electric vehicle (EV) charger on the property, both powered by solar! One is Tesla, and the other has a standard EV plug. The Tesla charger was fast - 48 A / 240 V, providing 42 miles/hour of Model 3 range. If more hotels adopted this approach, especially in and near state and national parks, it would help protect our parkland. Be aware that there's a ~2 mile dirt road on the way to Savage River Lodge, and it's filled with pot holes. Driving slowly and carefully in the summer, our RWD Model 3 survived without scraping, though I wouldn't exactly call it a joy ride. As far as things to do while you're here, there are a few miles of hiking trails accessible directly from the property that extend into this land-locked section of Savage River State Forest. Or you can drive to other areas of Savage River State Forest. If you're not a hiker, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and the Flight 93 memorial are each an hours drive from the lodge (and an hour from one another). We'll be back! But please upgrade the food - it's absolutely the only thing holding this back from being a first class experience. read more

I visited SRL on multiple prior occasions and at different seasons of the year. This is my first time back in ~4yrs and what a big change and disappointment for me. I'm also disappointed I encouraged friends to join. The check-in staff and resturant staff were generally friendly and professional. Regarding the resturant, while there are several choices of dishes to choose from we found the food including appetizers very bland with the exception of the crab dip. For dinner we had the scallops which had zero flavor. Not sure if there is a chef on site or a general short order cook, but overall the food for me was very disappointing compared to earlier visits years ago. My major disappointment is with the cabin that was not really all that clean and smelled very dusty. There were cob webs in a few locations. The furniture is very old and our sofa had rips in one cushion. Amenities were also lacking from what we were previously accustomed to having available in the cabin. I thought about preparing a cup of coffee in the cabin, but the ground coffee that was provided appeared old so I passed... It seems little care and attention is going into some of the trails and there is lots of overgrowth making walks and hikes less fun. In short, had I not returned this time, by comparison to my last visit I would have had a far more favorable review to write. The prior visits were more enjoyable and memorable. Yes, the morning breakfast was delivered to the cabin in a styrofoam cooler and arrived early as promised. Again, the breakfast burrito was bland with no condiments on the side. read more

Came to Savage River Lodge for a get away from the city for a couple days. We stayed in Yurt #5 for 2 nights / 1 day. I am not the outdoorsy type at all so was really nervous about this stay. When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the yurt is. There were heated floors throughout and the bed was super comfortable and plush. They provided towels, toiletries and a robe. The yurt was pretty large too with a sofa and two arm chairs. There was a small kitchenette with a mini fridge, hot water heater, french press with coffee, and selection of tea bags. I took off a star because the bathroom sink backed up when it was used and the cabinet to get to the mini fridge was slightly broken. The top of the yurt where the ceiling fan is was dusty and had a lot of cobwebs, but I imaging its pretty hard to get to. There is supposed to be a fireplace that we can use to warm the yurt but for some reason we couldn't get it to work. The heated floors was the main way that the yurt stays warm, but it would turn on and off so the yurt would be super cold at one point then super hot. Check in and check out were contactless where the yurt was left unlocked with the key inside. They delivered muffins and orange juice to the front door in the morning. Their restaurant was only open the first night so we ordered dinner to be delivered to our yurt. We shared the crab dip. I got the roasted acorn squash and my husband ordered the steak frites. I really enjoyed the meal and was pretty full afterwards. The other night, we ordered from their sister restaurant Cornucopia Cafe and this food was not as good. I ordered the arugula salad with chicken added and it was way too salty. My husband ordered two sandwiches (I think the meatloaf and the pot roast sandwich) that he enjoyed. For activities, they have several trails to go on. We hiked the outer loop trail in the morning and it had some great views by the water. We picked up our lunch from the lodge after (ham sandwich, turkey sandwich, chips with salsa, and popcorn). The sandwiches were panini style and great combination. The popcorn had some special seasoning on it that had a hint of salt with a kick. I would definitely stay again and think it would be a better experience if the lodge was open! read more

Sigh. We came here four years ago and had a magical time. Truly outstanding. We were so looking forward to coming again but were wildly disappointed in our second, most-recent experience. The cabins are showing signs of deferred maintenance. Broken windows. Broken ceiling fan. Multiple burned out light bulbs. Rotten out canoe by the fire pit (it probably looked cool there once). I asked the owner about it and she said it was hard finding good help. I'm sorry, but that's your job and DC, which is full of contractors, is only a few hours away. Hire someone to come up! Speaking of the owner... we attended the owners meet and greet, arriving a minute before the invitation stated it ended (hey, we're human). The classy response from her would have been to grab me a glass of wine and say "glad you could make it" wink wink. Her response? To say "it's over" and pour the last bit of wine into her husband's glass! The fire pit outside could not be lit due to the drought and winds. I get it. The top-notch service response would be to light the fireplace inside for ambience instead. Nope, that doesn't happen until November. The bar was between cocktail menus so there was nothing fancy to order to drink. Our large family was seated upstairs, which would have been fine except we were given no advance notice about it, which made us feel like castaways. The table upstairs was several folding tables put together in an awkward rectangle with a tacky white tablecloth over it. If you're going to offer dining upstairs, at least get a real table and real chairs. My guess is the owners are on their way out. The grounds are beautiful and hiking lovely. read more

Pros: beautiful scenery with fresh air right by a national park. Lots of great hiking which we enjoyed greatly, heard some of the most beautiful songbirds on our daily hikes. Cabin was very nice- clean and spacious, bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed the fresh muffins and OJ every morning and the keypad function on the front door was very convenient. A very quiet and tranquil setting away from the hubbub of the city. Wine selection was great and my husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the wine in the woods event. Cons: many items on the menu were unavailable. The staff was inexperienced and not attentive to detail. The food was lackluster: the meat tasted frozen, and the ingredients were neither fresh nor high quality with exception of the bread and olive oil that came before dinner which was delicious. We were much more impressed with the lunch menu and experience...the wraps we ordered were actually very good and well worth the price. You may want to take your 4x4 vehicle if you plan to come here as the long windy gravel road leading to the lodge was littered with potholes. Bring plenty of snacks, these are what saved the day after a lackluster dinner experience. The coffee was low quality but the tea was delicious. read more

Visited for my anniversary weekend in the beginning of the year and was impressed with the amenities and serene environment. This is what glamping should be. From heated floors in our yurt to fresh muffins delivered to our door for breakfast, SRL goes above and beyond. The anniversary package came with an amazing bottle of champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and credit for dinner at the in-house restaurant. The staff and lodge were very friendly and accommodating. The longest trail was a 2.2 mile loop but you can always make it longer by joining one of the other ones. A hike in the snow made it not as easy as it might sound. My biggest complaint is the food is really pretty basic for what is advertised as a fine dining experience. A bowl of maybe 10 tiny cauliflower was $10. The shepherds pie was liquid...like a soup. Salmon had some stewed tomatoes and bell peppers on it like salsa. I mean it was all fine and edible but not an amazing experience for the palate. At close to $100 a meal for 2 people, I expected more. Their restaurant also doesn't open until 9am for breakfast. They deliver muffins and OJ in the morning but don't expect that to arrive until close to 9 either. Maybe people who come to a wooded cabin tend to sleep in and it works out. Either way we were up before 730 everyday. Good to bring your own snacks if you are an early riser. Had breakfast inside once and it was also just ok. The eggs were soggy and greasy. I feel like this place has potential and I'd be willing to try again. However, as far as a luxury getaway goes, it falls short. They also don't bring fresh towels or clean daily unless you call to request it. I'd describe it as a nice way to spend time outdoors but don't expect a 5 star resort. read more

I think there's a lot that shows a lack of ongoing investment in this resort. I noticed that a lot of the blinds in the cabin were broken, the baskets that the breakfasts come in are actually coolers that look like they have some bites taken out of them, the road to the lodge had washed out, the trails were not maintained (trees had fallen across many of the trails), the restaurant has many issues (more on this later in my review), the reception doesn't know basic information like when the restaurant is or isn't open, and they do not pick up their phone for reservations. The restaurant was very dysfunctional (and the food was mediocre). We tried to get food from the restaurant three times. We succeeded two times. The other time, we got misinformation about the hours the restaurant was open. Both times, the restaurant was out of most of the key ingredients for the dishes we could eat (one of these was a Saturday night). The place was understaffed, so getting wine, a cheese plate, and 2 dishes took more than two hours. The server didn't know why the chef has paused, and apparently, there were lots of complaints. This has been shared in many other reviews. Again, it's not terrible - I still enjoyed the weekend of reading books and drinking wine by a fireplace - but if my long weekend budget is the better part of $1K, I have more and better options than Savage River Lodge. -- TL;DR - Normally, all of this is fine, but if I am spending $280/night and $120 on a dinner for two, I want the phone to be picked up and the restaurant to have food available. read more

What an unexpectedly pleasant place! We found out about the lodge and restaurant because they offer electric car charging in their parking lot, and we needed to charge up a bit on a trip through the area. Although we didn't spent the night, we did eat at the restaurant while the car charged, and enjoyed the bonfire outside afterward. The staff were all very friendly and told us about cross country skiing here in the winter, and about other nearby attractions (state parks near Deep Creek Lake). The food was outstanding. We had a crab dip appetizer, creamy smoked Gouda soup, salad with scallops, and spinach and kale stuffed eggplant. They also have a great wine menu, and interesting looking cocktails. Dessert was cheesecake with chocolate and strawberry sauce. We'll be back to check out the cabins and yurts, and to eat in the restaurant again. PS: the place is solar powered! They make 90% of their power needs on a good day. read more

Amazing wine list (over 250 bottles). My glasses of Merlot and Cabernet were smooth and delectable. -4 beers on tap when we went (Sam Adams seasonal, heavy seas black cannon, devils backbone Vienna lager, porter) -breakfast: I had the hunter omelet and my husband had the tomato florentine. The omelets were so fluffy and soft that we inquired how they were prepared -- cream and clarified butter. It was the best omelet I've ever had. The sausages were sausage "meatballs" that had a mixed spiced savoriness. -room service: we ate dinner twice via room service. The service was friendly although they did forget two parts of our order (a side and an item off the dog menu). When we called to infirm them, they promptly delivered the items within 10 minutes, apologized and took $10 off the bill. -duck ravioli appetizer. I love Al dente but these were almost hard. The flavor was nice, though. -duck breast entree - served medium was very good with a crispy salty skin to compliment the juicy pink meat. It came with a tiny side of kale. Venison sausage- appetizer came w one sausage link for $9. It was a bit too firm but the flavor was well seasoned and not at all gamey like I thought venison we old be. -filet mignon - cooked to medium rare (asked for rare this time) was very tender with a nice glaze sauce over Yukon puree. Nicely done but not the best I've had. -lentil side - my husband loved them but they were a bit too plain and under-seasoned for me. -cheese plate: excellent selection of cheeses (a hard, soft, medium firm and a very firm Bleu -impressive and experienced varieties. -bone a petit menu - cure offerings including meatballs and peanut butter biscuits. We ordered the chicken and rice which had green beans, sweet potato atop rice pilaf. My dogs loved it of course. The portion was a bit small (we ordered the "big paw"). -dog biscuits. We must admit that we tried the Bodhi biscuits and they were really good!!! Crazy but they tasted like parmesan biscuits for people- buttery and cheesey? Our dogs were not happy that we were eating their treats! Shame on us. read more

Savage lodge has great and amazing accommodations - we've stayed here several times over the past few years - with an exemplary experience. However, we just left the restaurant where the management and food quality consistency have gone downhill (or at least they had a bad night and could have handled it better). Two chief issues to watch out for here: 1) Understaffing and poor quality control in the kitchen. Several tables in the dining room, including ourselves wre waiting over 30-40 minutes for our dishes. Our waiter came by several times to apologize, but clearly something was awry in the kitchen 2) Roulette wheel menu: for sure there are some fabulous menu items, including the cauliflower salad as an example. However, we tried the kimchi pancakes, which were oddly stuff with cheese (not mentioned on the menu), but also frankly dry, and awful. Our waiter offered to take them off our tab, but the manager overruled her. ($10 on a $100+ tab). Not sure what to make of the situation, but it felt like weird mix of stubborness and lack of customer service. read more

Our yurt was the highlight of our trip. Really cool and cozy. Every morning we were delivered muffins and fresh juice, it was a nice touch. The lodge and its staff are friendly but timid. If you don't ask a lot questions during your stay you won't learn much about what's what and what to do. The food and drinks are on the expensive side. And everything was a bit of a wait. The staff moves at half speed with zero urgency. Dinner was definitely where the attention is paid as far as the food goes, as the breakfast was a let down. Greasy and just boring SRL is in the middle of nowhere..If the weather is bad you will definitely need a 4x4 vehicle. The management here embraces the snow and ice almost too much, as they don't salt or sand the areas, leaving any paved surface extremely treacherous. We made several requests to the front desk for some assistance with the inclined paths and parking areas near our yurt, nothing was ever done. Ice everywhere. Maybe they think it's part of the experience, we got the "oh well" vibe when we brought it to anyone's attention. I recommend bringing some alcohol and snacks of your own, because other than the lodge there is no other option for food/supplies. The nearest town is miles away and the lodge itself is a couple miles off of the nearest road. I recommend SRL to anyone needing to escape a busy/urban lifestyle, everything here is very outdoorsy and laid back. read more

Wow what a disappointing experience. Let me start by saying Shae, Molly and Amber tried their best to ensure a good evening. Weve been here many times and had very good experiences but not this time. Party of six, all who have been there several times, celebrating a birthday on Sunday August 19th. Ordered drinks many of which had to be remade. Dinner: over two hours before any food or even bread. Ordered chicken piccata, got a half chicken in a sauce. Certainly not chicken piccata! It seemed like the operation is spread way too thin and resources absent. We had an amazing time. The yurt was gorgeous. Great food. Would have loved a microwave to reheat. We were told at lunch that in order to get a glass of rose we had to get a bottle which at dinner we learned was incorrect. The scallops were amazing as was the grits with ribs. Very friendly staff. Wonderful and relaxing SRL is a wonderful escape from the city. The private cabins are quaint and cozy. You receive muffins and fresh OJ in a pic nic basket each morning on our porch. Very very dog friendly. Dinner was good too! They have the option of In-Cabin Dining. Highly recommended! SRL is located on over 100 acres and lots of hiking. It is also near great biking: Allegany pass and C&O trail! We will come back! Highly recommended. read more

We were looking for a romantic place to celebrate our anniversary within driving distance from DC area. Found this lodge online and had great reviews so we booked it. We asked for the anniversary package which included one night in a cabin and dinner. For a small fee we were upgraded to a yurt. It was the most amazing experience to stay in a yurt. It's basically a glamorous tepee. The bed was so comfortable and the sheets were so soft and warm. The fireplace kept the yurt warm throughout the night. It was absolutely wonderful. There was a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the room with a note that said " Happy Anniversary." In the morning, the staff delivered delicious muffins and freshly squeezed orange juice. We also had dinner at the restaurant. The food was excellent. We had the meatloaf and the fish (black salmon). They were both delicious. The staff brought chocolate covered strawberries because it was our anniversary. Small details like these made the stay even more wonderful. Overall SRL is a great place to relax in the woods with above average dining available and very friendly staff. Hiking is great and it is mostly dead silent, which is what we were after. We will probably return in the spring or fall. We are very pleased with our stay at SRL and have been recommending it to all of our friends and family. read more

After reading the reviews on yelp, I decided to take my fiance here for his Birthday ( Oct. 2010). Its definitely a different experience because of the fact that the lodge is in the middle of a state park in Maryland... Very unique!!!! If you are looking for a place to take that special someonefor a great night out other than a typical run of the mill chain restaurant, then this is the place for you. Our journey to find the lodge did not go as planned.... A 35 minute drive from somerset turned in to over an hour!!!! Some of the roads we had to travel were not marked at all!!! Typical Somerset County... Then finally we found the entrance to the lodge and once again I was surprised to find out it was just a dirt road.. Uh oh!!! Did we make a mistake traveling here??? No way!!! The place is beautiful( see attached photos) The Landscape of the area is breathtaking.... Where can you go and have a very nice dinner and then go out on the back porch and see deer eating? This place!!! It was Wonderful!!!! I was tickled pink seeing nature at its best. Even though the menu was a bit pricey (that's why I gave it four stars), it was worth it!!! The wait staff was very attentive and the food was delicious.... Then after dinner, we took a walk of the grounds and nothing was more peaceful to see the great outdoors after a awesome meal. I recommend this place if you are in to snow shoeing or just want a relaxing getaway weekend ( this place is a b and b as well) If you like to travel and love the outdoors, jump in the car and head to the lodge ( note: if you go there in the winter months make sure you have 4x4, the road leading to the lodge can be a bit tricky....) read more

My husband and I just enjoyed a fabulous kid-free weekend at the Savage River Lodge. We stayed in one of their yurts (basically a spacious and luxurious tee-pee with all the amenities). We also dined in their Restaurant for dinner twice (the antelope chops are a must) and enjoyed 2 incredible wines out of their owner's special cellar. And, last but not least, the service and their staff was unforgettable. We chatted a lot with the bartender and our server, both of whom had great personalities. My husband even had a long conversation with the owner, Mike, who was such a delight. We were both sad to leave today and already are planning a return trip back. If you are looking to get off the grid for a few days and need some serenity in your life, look no further than the Savage River Lodge. ***There's tons of hiking trails on the property and nearby, you can visit the Flight 93 Memorial which is one hour away, Wisp is 40 minutes away, there is cross country skiing and snow shoeing in winter, bonfires nightly, and more. read more

Drove here for lunch from Pittsburgh on a whim and really enjoyed our time. It's in the middle of a forest. Friendly staff, some nice lunch options. We tried the Muffaleta sandwich and the fish tacos, both were good. Really friendly service. There are cabins and yurts you can stay in--haven't checked those out. Would love to go back! read more

I'd say skip it- appetizer salad was a dated recipe burnt lettuce Caesar that was over dressed and slimy- I sent it back- they sent another. Yum just what I wanted, another train wreck. It was fresher lettuce, but pale, bitter white romaine. I'd say skip it. Next up the filet- thankfully I ordered odd tasting reduction sauce on the side. It was reduced to a pasty sweet burgundy mess. I'd say skip it. So the dry aged filet, was definitely dry, and over cooked. It was a shame what the place does to food. Clearly training and skill is lost here. I don't mind paying but our table of 6 had 5 very disappointed people and wallets were too light for this mess. I'd say skip it or try breakfast. First of all, a place in the middle of nowhere that has an #EVCharging Station! Along with a solar array that powers 90% of the main Lodge. This is an onsite owners operation, so careful attention to the smallest details is what you should expect. There are a dozen or so log cabins that are extraordinarily designed and appointed as well as another dozen yurt structures that are equally wonderful and comfortable. Lot's of follow up upon making reservations and super friendly staff on hand. Accommodations are very comfortable but the food is not very good. Maybe acceptable 20 years ago but menu has almost no fresh vegetables! And what was there in the way of salads was so drenched in dressing that it was almost inedible. The funny thing is, on Saturday morning, I didn't even know where I was going for my birthday weekend... my wife had been planting all kinds of misleading hints (ranging from the Eastern Shore to Frederick), so I didn't know what to expect. After stopping for lunch in Frederick, we drove for a few more hours and ended up at an absolutely idyllic, beautiful getaway, the Savage River Lodge. The managers had everything ready for us: a well-outfitted cabin, fans already running, everything a couple on holiday could need, plus a "Happy Birthday" balloon w/a small box containing two truffles attached. (Aww.) Let me break it down: Surroundings: Beautiful and quiet. You could get into as much trouble as you wanted to... there are miles of trails on the property (a state park) alone to go on mild-medium hikes. If you need small towns or cities, there are a bunch in close proximity (Cumberland was pretty cute) for shopping, dining or antiquing. Our cabin: Spacious, carpeted and very comfortable. It was well-shaded by trees, and we were lucky to have cool nights even in July, so the ceiling fans made it almost too cold. Fluffy but firm bed, coffee/tea laid out for us and a mini-fridge for the wine and groceries we brought. Plenty of room to stretch out, read and relax. Treatment: Excellent, from fresh-baked muffins and juice waiting outside your cabin door each morning to the excellent service we received in setting up tours and having our every need taken care of. The lodge's restaurant was epic, for having a relatively simple menu: we had dinner there our first night, splitting an appetizer of house-made game sausages (two wild boar, one venison), a cup of watermelon soup (had savory accents of onion, basil and cilantro), and splitting their meatloaf (also made with boar and venison) and crab cake entrees. We could have split one entree and been happy...as it is, we were stuffed but deliriously so. They have a substantial wine cellar and it sounded like their chef was always experimenting with the menu. We could have easily stayed a few days in our room alone, but the hiking, the small towns, and a halfday trip across the PA state line to two of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes lured us out. Still, we both left wishing we had a few more days to stay and enjoy the quiet and lush surroundings. In short, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

This is my 4th time staying here since Christmas 2010, the last being Sept 2014 before parents (who passed away in CA October 2019) required my vacation time/dollars elsewhere. (No regrets, just a fact). Owners and staff are so wonderful, I extended my stay by a night. I am not a huge eater, nor do I eat a lot of meat. However, besides the scallops, I thoroughly enjoyed a few bites of the lamb chops, the drunken mushrooms, crab dip, and the shrimp johnny cakes - i sooo need this recipe. Was traveling w dog and fiancé, who also enjoyed the trip. If you are like me and appreciate smaller meals and don't want to eat 3 squares in the restaurant, put some yogurt or hard boiled eggs in a personal cooler to turn muffins and juice into a complete breakfast. Etc. hike every trail in one day.... this place is great! read more

We stay here with our dog 2 or 3 times a year. It's a great getaway from DC. It's a great place for someone who likes to relax and have some peace and quiet. If you get the chance, book a half day fly fishing trip with Travis, if you've never done it before, it's a great introduction and the lodge will provide all of the gear you need. The food at the lodge is very good, and the staff are all great. We've never had a bad experience at the SRL. read more

When I looked at the website it looked like everything we wanted for a relaxing weekend away. I was nervous after reading some of the reviews on trip advisor but decided to trust my instincts and give it a try. So glad I did. It was absolutely paradise. Just what the doctor ordered. We were so relaxed we stayed in our rooms until noon both days we were there. The juice and muffins were enough to keep us snuggled in bed reading the paper and listening to the quiet patter of the rain. The individual cabins were every bit as lovely as described. We had mentioned when we reserved that we were celebrating an anniversary and the owners left a little bottle of bubbly on the counter for our check in. It was a thoughtful and appreciated touch. We ate at the restaurant for the rest of our meals. Dinners were especially delicious. We love the friendliness of this type of accommodation but also like to have our space and privacy. The Lodge had this down to perfection. The staff were available and friendly if you needed anything but didn't hover or overstep our need for a private relaxing weekend away. We had initially planned to do a bit of exploring around the Frostburg area but we loved the lodge so much we found ourselves content to spend our time there and take it easy (something we never do!!). We did the wine caching on site which was a ton of fun and a good way to explore the property. Unfortunately we booked late and there were no more dog friendly cabins available but next time we will be sure to bring our girl. If your dog is yappy I would leave them at home. It is such a peaceful retreat, I can definitely see how some guests would be bothered by the disturbance of barking. We thoroughly loved the peace and quiet. There were quite a few dogs there who were loving the trails and the Saturday Yappy Hour. And of course, Koko and Kharma wree adorable. When we bring our girl we will definitely order one of the doggie dining selections. What a find!! All in all, a slice of paradise. We will be back......and soon! Thanks! read more
