Yum Woon Sen Salad - glass noodles salad with shrimp and chicken
    Allie A.

Super nice staff, friendly and attentive. Decided I needed a spicy hot soup of something before hitting the theater tonight, so I remembered this place not far from the office and en route to the Academy of Music. Tom kha soup hit the spot. Next up was the appetizer salad of yum woon sen, glass noodles that came with shrimp and chicken and just the right hit of pepper and spice with a splash of lime and citrusy flavors. Lovely and easy.

Good find when were in the neighborhood looking for some Thai food. Quick and friendly service. The spring rolls were ok, but I got the pad woon sen curry glass noodles with veggies and chicken and they were really good. Cute neighborhood too. Will definitely be back!

First time ordering from here. We were hoping to dine in but they're currently only doing take out. We ordered chicken pad Thai, beef pad kee mao and tom yum soup. The chicken Tom yum soup was good; I got mild but it still had a little spice to it which I liked. The pad kee mao noodles were also good. Unfortunately the pad Thai was disappointing because the noodles were over cooked so it tasted really starchy. The pad Thai flavor was okay. They're quick! Ordered at the restaurant and our food was ready within 15 minutes as promised. Good service. Street parking.

I've walked past by this place for a while now, and was craving Thai food when out with friends. So why not try it out? We entered to a very charming place and were seated quickly. It was clear that our server was in training but he was still trying and besides some awkwardness, their service was great. Now for the food. They have three levels of spice that your can adjust any of the meals for from 1-3; my friend and I got 3's and concluded that it was not that spicy but with enough of a kick to not be overpowering. I had the Panang Curry with vegetables, which also came with a side of white rice (they state that they do not substitute for brown, just as a heads up!). My meal was okay, nothing to write home about. My friend said the same of their Pad Thai, but my other friend had the Pad-Kee-Mao which she said tasted a bit Italian? We concluded that it was probably due to their choice of chili flake and that it was the weakest dish of the night. This BYOB really serves you charm but only mediocre Thai food.

Stopped in with some family and had a veritable feast! The papaya salad was crisp and fresh, with a hint of lime. Also had a squid appetizer, which was delicious and tender. We shared four entrees between the five of us, and each one had its own flavor and spice was well balanced. For dessert we had mango sweet rice, which was absolutely perfect. The mango was perfectly ripe and the rice was sweet without being syrupy. All in all a great experience.

Pad thai and Ahi tuna - both delicious!

This place is a neighborhood staple in grad hospital. It has the feeling of being locally owned as well which is a plus. We came and sat outside and it was a lovely experience. It's a nice block to enjoy people watching and the activity of the block. The service was also fairly attentive. We got the pad thai and the ahi tuna special. The pad thai was delicious and what you would expect from a thai restaurant. The ahi tuna was simply delicious. Our waiter had recommended it and it definitely didn't disappoint. Overall this is a cute local place that you can feel good about supporting. The food, vibe, and value also add to the charm. I'll happily be returning to this place.

Underwhelming pad Thai. Very little flavor or sauce. Cute little spot with friendly staff. Unimpressed by flavor.

The eggplant (I'm not always the biggest fan) was delicious - great texture and complexity of flavor. The food is a bit pricey (portions are quite small) but it all tastes delicious. We shared this among 4 adults and I left satisfied.

It always sounded odd when people spoke of how amazing their cheesesteak eggrolls are, yes they're a staple Philly food item but still a little odd for a Thai place. I get it now. The cheesesteak spring roll is superior to any cheesesteak roll I've ever had. The spring roll wrapper just makes it so much lighter & crispier & than the inside? Perfection, even when it's scorching your mouth. The chicken puffs were also delicious, especially in the sauce. Walking in around 5:45pm on a Friday evening in June without a reservation, I was able to get a table for 45 minutes within five minutes. Here's my experience. 1) Food: Wow- just wow. Everything is excellent. To feed a hungry stomach, I ordered the Garlicky Cabbage, Yellow Curry Noodle Soup with Chicken, and my server gifted me with the Grilled Saht Koh as a surprise. Everything had textured flavors that are well balanced. The winner for me was the Garlicky Cabbage. Having grown up in a country where cabbage is the staple, these are among the best I've ever had. I'll note that I was warned that the Yellow Curry Noodle Soup was spicy. I love spice but can't handle it. I was unaffected by the soup's spice level. 2) Drinks: The Thai green iced tea was unique, refreshing, and delicious! I almost ordered a second. Like many places in Philly, it's BYOB so there isn't a cocktail, beer, wine menu. 3) Service: It was excellent. Taylor, my server, was passionate about the menu, personable, and interesting to talk to. She's awesome! 4) Location: In South Philly, there's a lot to experience nearby from top-rated restaurants, parks, and public art.

So you might stumble across info for the best times to secure a walk-up reservation and they'll tell you to arrive at least by 10:30am Thursday through Saturday as Mawn opens at 11am. But let me tell you how I pulled up in front of Mawn at 10:40am on a Thursday and there was already a line of about 15 people!! Mind you, these people have PEOPLEZ as quite a few were holding spots in line for others in their party who could now casually stroll up to the line since their spot was secured by their people. I'm telling you have a game plan! If I knew then what I know now I probably would have got there at least by 9:30, seriously. My party got waitlisted as soon as we were just one person away from entering the restaurant and we had to wait for another 40 minutes. Fortunately it was a nice day so we just walked around the neighborhood and came back and got in. It's a small quaint place that only seats about 28 people. You'll feel like your visiting your favorite relatives home. You'll glance around at the other guest and feel like WOW i'm one of the few who finally made it into one of the most coveted highly acclaimed restaurants in Philly! Now let me see if it lives up to the hype! haha! I started out with the pear melon salad. It was light and refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed the citrus notes and the pear slices. I would have never thought to add the pear but that really complimented the salad well. I was told that a MUST try is the head on soft shell shrimp. At first I wasn't thrilled about the thought of eating the head but said what the heck, lets go for the full experience! If you love softshell crabs you'll love this! There was nothing off putting about it. It simply taste like delicious premium shrimp in a fish caramel sauce with a hint of thai basil and chili. It was wonderful. I could have gone for a second round but I wanted to try other items. I enjoyed the seafood fried rice..this is similar to the crab fried rice but included uni roe and caviar with saracha on the side so you can regulate your heat level. I'll say this, while I enjoyed the seafood fried rice and the bonus elements of it, I was not a fan of the texture of the rice itself. Perhaps it's just my preference. The rice was light, fluffy and slightly sticky in texture whereas I prefer more of a thai fried rice which is dry, slightly firm and non-clumpy texture. But that's not taking any cool points away from Mawn. It's just my preference that i'm mentioning in case anyone else goes in expecting a different texture. I love the team service aspect at Mawn. Our waiter emphasized that we're not bugging anybody if we need anything we can stop any staff person walking by. I love that. Beef Noodle soup is delicous here. So is the yellow curry noodle soup. The fish is really good here too. I didn't realize I could have requested for it to be deboned (probably because I was talking to much lol) But my waiter was kind enough to come over and help me debone it when they saw I was struggling lol This was the first time I ever had a green thai tea! It was really a treat. Not overly sweet. Nothing but pure deliciousness here! And a super helpful warm friendly staff.
