Even though I don't really like spicy food, if I ordered it again I would probably be brave and order medium spice instead of mild. The portion was great for the price but I would have liked a little bit more chicken and mushrooms in it. What I got was mostly broth. Fortunately, I really love the broth. The Satay Gal was delicious. Four grilled chicken skewers, with a side of peanut sauce and pickled vegetables in sweet vinegar. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and seasoned very well. The absolute best Thai food you can find in the city. A small family owned business run by this man who works so hard every single night. I order from this place at least a few times a week and it never disappoints. This is my old standby and it never disappoints. Tonight I had the Papaya Salad, coconut soup, and Pad Thai. It all was delicious.

I wanted Thai food one night but needed a change from my usual, as it was getting pricier. What impressed me here was that they had some creative variety' in the kinds of sauces traditionally served with certain dishes, their appetizer prices were FAR more reasonable than my usual "go-to", as well as two to three dollars less for entrees which I found to be better in preparation! The server always had everything set for me, and a straw for the Thai iced tea I liked to drink on the ride home. My prior goto always put the straw on the bottom of the bag that was double tied so tightly I'd have to rip it open and let the contents spill out. When I asked for another one, the very young girl simply said, " yep! It's in the bag already!" It's the little bits of customer service that makes a difference, really. I've walked past by this place for a while now, and was craving Thai food when out with friends. So why not try it out? We entered to a very charming place and were seated quickly. It was clear that our server was in training but he was still trying and besides some awkwardness, their service was great. Now for the food. They have three levels of spice that your can adjust any of the meals for from 1-3; my friend and I got 3's and concluded that it was not that spicy but with enough of a kick to not be overpowering. I had the Panang Curry with vegetables, which also came with a side of white rice (they state that they do not substitute for brown, just as a heads up!). My meal was okay, nothing to write home about. My friend said the same of their Pad Thai, but my other friend had the Pad-Kee-Mao which she said tasted a bit Italian? Oh man, I wish I read the reviews before ordering take-out! I ordered the steak salad, pad Thai, and Thai iced tea. The steak salad was tasty but was very skimpy with the portions. I wouldn't pay almost $9 for that again. My pad Thai (with a side of a wedge of lemon) was so disappointing. I barely ate it. I've had much better pad Thai from a mall cafeteria. Stopped in with some family and had a veritable feast! The papaya salad was crisp and fresh, with a hint of lime. Also had a squid appetizer, which was delicious and tender. We shared four entrees between the five of us, and each one had its own flavor and spice was well balanced. For dessert we had mango sweet rice, which was absolutely perfect. This place is a neighborhood staple in grad hospital. It has the feeling of being locally owned as well which is a plus. We came and sat outside and it was a lovely experience. It's a nice block to enjoy people watching and the activity of the block. The service was also fairly attentive. We got the pad thai and the ahi tuna special. The pad thai was delicious and what you would expect from a thai restaurant. The ahi tuna was simply delicious. Our waiter had recommended it and it definitely didn't disappoint. Their pad Thai is my favorite in the city. It's best if you eat it there but takeout is good too. I find a lot of pad Thais don't use enough sauce, which makes the noodles dry and clumpy. At sawatdee, there's just the right amount of sweet sauce to coat the noodles and makes for a delish, cohesive dish. I've had their curries too and they're ok. They're really thin and I like a thicker curry so it sticks to the rice. I like other thai spots better for curry, but this spot will always be my pad Thai go to. read more

It comes with fried tofu already. The chicken was a little tough. The pasta was gummy but it was quite sweet. Then I had mango sticky rice. I have friends who order from here regularly, and so I thought I would try it. My pad thai was underseasoned and just not that great, and then I took a bite of a shrimp that was rotten and mealy which was so disgusting. It immediately made me wretch, then lose my appetite and throw my entire order into the trash. I would recommend staying far away from this place. I have eaten Asian food in many restaurants in North America, Europe, Asia. What is probably the best of them all is the small unpretentious bistro located at 534 S.15th Street, in Center City, Philadelphia, Sawatdee. We have eaten at the location for at least 10 years, and regularly eat Sawatdee's home delivery. I don't claim that the restaurant possesses the elegance of some Asian restaurants in London, San Francisco,Toronto. What it has is the food. I can't eat decor. One characteristic of a good restaurant is consistency, and this restaurant has it. The roast duck I ate at Sawatdee 10 years ago is exactly as good as the home delivered duck I ate tonight. My husband will not order duck anywhere else. It is moist and tender and the skin is darkly roasted and crisp. Another requirement for a good restaurant is meticulous attention to detail. Take the dish I had tonight, massaman curry, with Coconut milk, potatoes, carrots, onions, and shrimp. I particularly noticed the potatoes. They were cut into one inch identical cubes, and were cooked to a slight al dente consistency. Hard to do. The chicken wings, moist, tender, sweet, put to shame all other wings. The vegetable stuffed spring rolls were robust and well-flavored. We ordered medium hotness in all of dishes, and each dish had exactly the same amount of fire. How do they do this? Curry and spring rolls in most Asian restaurant are meh. But every dish we ate tonight was better than its equivalent anywhere I have eaten. And we feel respected as customers. We have limited mobility and eat a lot of home delivered food. What Sawatdee brought us tonight was just as delectable as their in house fare, and it arrived piping hot and ready for the table. But Sawatdee, as I said, is a small corner restaurant, with no pretensions. A saying is, "The philospher is without honor in his own town." Sawatdee 's honors will come from the gratitude of its well-fed customers. They have enjoyed the best Asian food in the Delaware Valley. read more

We also got the pad kee Mao and that was the only dish that tasted as it should have, savory and spicy. One thing to note is that there is either no or a very small amount of actual Thai chilis used because the food was painfully bland. And when we inquired about any way to make it spicier (not a request you should have to make at a Thai place) we did not have any options. I gave this place a try again with my coworkers and was disappointed with my second visit. I am updating this with 3 stars because even though the food is great, the service is horrible. We were celebrating a birthday so I brought in a cake before everyone arrived. The workers were very clueless that we asked if we can hide the cake until we were finished with our food. Other than that, we also had to keep asking our servers to refill our water. I used to work in a restaurant and I know to always check on your table and refill water glasses regardless if they're finished with their entrees. Going back to the cake issue, we asked the workers to bring out the cake and they brought out the entire box. No candles on it or anything. We had to do everything ourselves. When we asked for sharing plates, the one worker FINALLY told us that there was a fee for the cake because they already serve desserts. This was something they should've brought up when we gave them the cake to begin with. I never heard of this fee but apparently it's common. I didn't mind the fee but just a warning if you're someone who wants to bring a cake to celebrate a birthday. Again, working in another Thai restaurant, I didn't expect this fee. If you're planning on dining here, be prepared for delicious food but horrible service that doesn't refill your water or are clueless about their own policy. read more

On a very unseasonably cold night, we thought a nice spicy Thai food would keep us warm. Coming from a warm country I should have known better, eating spicy food help to keep us cool not warm. I ordered Satay-Gai, as a starter, a nicely grilled chicken, marinated in coconut curry alongside with a flavorful peanut dipping sauce and refreshing cucumber relish. I got the Massaman Curry with Chicken as a main course. It was absolutely delicious. The food at Sawatdee range from spicy to extreme spicy, I ordered mine to be made medium spiced and it was just right! Nice mixture of flavorful and colorful ingredients. Sour tropical fruits , sweet pineapples, salty fish oil, sweet palm sugar, spicy Thai garlic cooked in coconut milk with a side of steamed jasmine rice. Very nice, warm and cozy dish. I had to leave some space for dessert. Poached Banana In Coconut Cream! Very simple and very interesting! This Thai banana dessert is made with bananas which were poached and sweeten in palm sugar syrup and cooked in coconut cream. Naturally sweet and light. P.S: No check splitting and Max of 2 CC/table. My fiance and I needed some dinner one night when we were leaving an appointment leading up to our wedding, so I thought of grabbing some Thai takeout on our walk home, since Sawatdee is right on our way. They had some items I was familiar with and some that I wasnt, so we ordered a mixture to cover all of our bases. I fell in love with Thai curry while in Bangkok a few years ago, so I had to order some green. We also ordered green papaya salad, Tom Yum soup and Khao Pad Ka Prao Gung, or Thai basil fried rice with pork, peppers, onions, scallions, and eggs with chili garlic sauce. The food definitely needs a bit of improvement, well at least the take out side does. The flavors were good, but the flavor just isnt deep enough. There isnt enough seasoning and the dishes just arent spicy enough. I know they probably tone it down to make it more approacahable for the non-Thai customers, but thats the beauty of Thai food, the sweat on your upperlip, hot flash kind of heat. It doesnt burn deep, but it definietly leaves your mouth tingling and makes your body temperature rise a few degrees. It was a common theme through all the dishes. The flavor was good, but not enough seasoning or heat in the curry, papaya salad, or the Khao Pad Ka Paro Gung. The best executed of the dishes was the Tom Yum soup. The traditional sour and spicy flavors were there, again the heat was a little lacking, but it wasnt as missed in this soup. This was actually some of the better Thai food I have found in Philly so far. It still isnt up to snuff in my opinion in terms of where the flavors should be, but it was a pretty decent effort. Sometimes I wonder if it is because of the lack of Thai population in Philadelphia. Solid neighborhood Thai food, dressed up with a nice coat of paint-- literally. I love the green walls, and they charmed me nearly half a star's worth. Crispy tofu and bok choi was bland and I wasn't tempted to finish it.
